HOW TO MAKE A SOCK WOLF

By Lydia Grantham Step One: Get a couple of wool socks with red stripes. Cut the tops off the socks so they are 20 cm long. Cut them in half. Sew the 4 strips of sock together to make 4 legs.

Step Two: Take one sock toe and cut off the top at about 9 cms. Turn that piece into 4 triangles to make the ears. You have to sew 2 triangles together to make one ear, then sew the other 2 triangles together. Take the rest of the toe part and stuff it with white stuffing to make the tail.

Step 3: Take the other sock toe and stuff it with white stuffing to make one long body.

Step 4: Stuff the legs and the ears and sew them to the body in the right places. Sew the tail on too.

Step 5: Get some black thread and 2 black beads and sew them onto the toe part of the body to make the eyes. You have to go in and out with the needle and thread.

Step 6: Get a piece of black felt and cut it into a triangle. Sew it on under the eyes with black thread to make the nose.

Have fun with your sock wolf! Awooooooooooooh!

Friendship Feasts is a made in Faro program, it is not affiliated with Social Services, the Faro Health Centre, or any government program. If you are able to make a meal for a family once in a while, please get yourself on the Friendship Feast list. You may get called once in 6 months. To receive meals, you just need to nominate yourself or someone who you know needs meals. Generally, Friendship Feasts provides meals when there has been a death or other hardship in the family, when someone is recovering from an operation or sickness, or when a family brings home a new baby. Getting involved in Friendship Feasts is a great way to get involved in our community and to meet people in town in a meaningful way.

Please remember- someone must call on your behalf or you can call to ask for meals.

Our volunteers do not make meals unless we have been asked.

FARO RCMP DETACHMENT

February and how about this weather!!

The Pelly River Hockey Challenge is planned for the February 28th weekend. We would like to extend a compliment to all those volunteers involved in the organizing and all those involved behind the scenes so far working to ensure Faro is well represented and this year’s event is a huge success. Youth from Many Yukon Communities including; Watson Lake, Ross River, and Pelly Crossing are planning to attend.

Winter can be a lot of fun. We have all suffered through the cold this winter but let=s get moving this February. The Recreation Department offers a full slate of activities for all ages and the area has more than enough activities to keep us all active...remember those New Year’s resolutions and get out and be active!!

A few reminders about snowmobiles and other vehicles…… as we head into warmer weather... If you’re traveling on a public road you must be a licensed driver. Your snowmobile/ATV must be registered, insured and you must wear a helmet. If you’re not traveling on a public road we ask you to do so safely and exercise common sense. The trails are not very wide, so be mindful of your speed and the possibility of oncoming traffic, skiers or others enjoying the outdoors. As always, remember a snowmobile is a motor vehicle.

Alcohol and motor vehicles do not mix.

Many people have expressed an interest in ice fishing and this is the season. Should your plans involve travel over rivers and lakes be mindful of thin ice and overflow and the risks they pose to your travels.

On the topic of snowmobiles, residents have largely been great in respecting the Golf course and staying off it.

Only recently has this become a problem. A lot of time is spent grooming the trails and it’s an expensive process that is easily destroyed by snowmobile traffic not to mention the potential damage to the course.

There are many trails around town and everyone is encouraged to utilize them. If you do feel compelled to operate your snowmobile on the Golf course trails, please stop by the Detachment and we can show you both how to hook the groomer up and where the trails are established.

Have a great Super Bowl Sunday but if you’re planning on having a few drinks please leave your car at home.

Faro Detachment would like to remind members of the community about our Emergency Phone located at the front entrance to the Detachment.

This phone line is connected directly to Whitehorse RCMP dispatch. The caller only has to hold the phone to their ear and someone from Whitehorse Dispatch will answer. This will ensure a quicker response from Faro RCMP members.

Department of Environment Christmas has come and gone once again! The New Year has begun and the days are again getting longer. We hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Christmas with family and friends and would like to wish everyone the best in the New Year!

The Fannin sheep are now on their winter range around Faro and viewing opportunities are wonderful for the few who wish to brave the snow and cold. A snowshoe into Van Gorder falls or on the Dena Cho trail will usually result in a good viewing opportunity.

For those with dogs, please take caution when letting your pets outside or when walking them on the numerous trails around town. Never allow dogs to harass wildlife, and also protect your dog from wolves and coyotes by always keeping them on a leash, especially if you walk them in the evening. Once wolves, foxes and coyotes begin preying on pets, it can be very difficult to remedy the problem. Prevention is always the best course of action, and never feed wildlife!

For snowmobilers and those out ice-fishing, please remember to use caution around ice and over-flow covered areas. With the extreme warm-weather we had in January, over-flow has become especially prevalent. This can be not only a very time-consuming nuisance, but also very dangerous. Watch for warning signs and travel with care.

As well, the trapping season is in full-swing. There are a few people trapping in the Faro area again this year.

Most trails being used for trapping are marked and it is advisable that you refrain from using these trails for your safety, for your pet’s safety and for respect of the trapper. If you have any questions regarding use of these trails, please feel free to contact our office.

The Bison hunting season resumes again on February 15th. There have been a few changes to the mid-winter closure of the bison hunting season. The closure has been lifted as of Jan. 1, 2015 in 9 wildlife management subzones: (5-36, 5-38, 5-39, 5-41, 5-44, 5-46, 5-47, 5-49, 5-50). These subzones border the Alaska and North Klondike Highways in the core bison range. There are several reasons for this in-season change; primarily it is hoped that by affording hunters the opportunity to harvest bison in January and the first half of February, there will be an increase in the number of bison harvested. Bison harvest also discourages range expansion of this bison herd into areas such as adjacent Kluane National Park. Finally, it is hoped that by opening these subzones during mid-winter, some hunter congestion currently experienced in late-winter can be redirected and alleviated.

The Dept. of Environment is also strongly encouraging hunters to consider harvesting a cow bison as well, which would significantly aid in bison management by reducing the population further. This is a great opportunity, and I would encourage anyone that gets a chance to hunt or accompany a hunter in the field for bison to jump at the chance. It is a wonderful time of the year to get off the couch and get outdoors! For more information regarding bison hunting and management, stop by our office or give us a call!

Dear ladies and gentlemen, my name is Alexander Fritz, I am living in the area of Graz, Austria. I am the son of Adolf Fritz (born 1948), who is the son of Adolf Fritz (1922-1986) who was the brother of Anton “Tony” Fritz (1914-1995). I am in the search for information on my grandpas’s brother, Mr. Anton “Tony” Fritz, born in Aflenz, Austria on January, 7th 1914, died on March, 13th 1995 in Dawson, Yukon.

I found this picture of my grand-uncle Mr. Tony Fritz and I assume that this is the world-famous “sourtoe cocktail”. Can you verify that? If so, are there any recordings when this picture was taken? Is there more information on Mr. Tony Fritz? Can anybody remember the person Tony Fritz? As far as I know there is grave on the Masonic cemetery. Mr. Tony Fritz seemed to live his last days in the MacDonalds Lodge, which seems to be something like a retirement home.

I am also looking for Helmut Fritz, the son of Tony.

THE SHED - FOLD AND CODE The Shed is available 24/7 for anyone who wants to leave and/or take good used clothing. Please do not smoke in the shed; the odour penetrates the clothes and smoking can be a fire hazard. Thanks to those who have taken time to fold and code clothes from the box. It’s a great help.

A big thank you to whoever has been helping to keep The Shed neat and tidy. It is greatly appreciated. Volunteers needed for snowshoe hare research I am hoping to find 1-2 volunteer "citizen scientists" to help collect snowshoe hare fecal pellets near Faro during the last week of February 2015. I am testing hormone levels in these samples as part of my PhD research, to obtain a non-invasive index of stress in the population.

LOOK UP! February 3 - Full Moon. The Moon will be directly opposite the Earth from the Sun and will be fully illuminated as seen from Earth. This phase occurs at 23:09 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Full Snow Moon because the heaviest snows usually fell during this time of the year. Since hunting is difficult, this moon has also been known by some tribes as the Full Hunger Moon.

February 6 - Jupiter at Opposition. The giant planet will be at its closest approach to Earth and its face will be fully illuminated by the Sun. This is the best time to view and photograph Jupiter and its moons. A medium-sized telescope should be able to show you some of the details in Jupiter's cloud bands. A good pair of binoculars should allow you to see Jupiter's four largest moons, appearing as bright dots on either side of the planet.

February 24 - Mercury at Greatest Western Elongation. The planet Mercury reaches greatest western elongation of 26.7 degrees from the Sun at 19:00 UT. This is the best time to view Mercury since it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the morning sky.

AVOCADO BUTTERMILK DRESSING OR DIP

1 medium firm-ripe avocado, peeled, seeded and cubed 2/3 cup buttermilk 1/4 cup sour cream 3 tablespoons grated sweet onions 2 1/2 tablespoons fresh lime juice 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon minced garlic 1 teaspoon minced fresh dill 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon cayenne Combine all the ingredients in a blender and blend on high speed until smooth, scraping down the sides as needed. Adjust the seasoning, to taste.

Transfer to a bowl, cover, and refrigerate until ready to use. (The dressing can be made up to 4 hours in advance.)

Ten teams (5 from Whitehorse, 2 from Tagish, 1 from Teslin and 2 from Faro) participated. Congratulations to the Faro Wits (Michelle Vainio, Marilyn Boyle, Doris Unruh and Sally Baker) for their first place finish.
