Sunday September 26, 2021 Love & Laughter Comedy Tour Fangzhou is the founder for Love & Laughter Comedy Tour. He has performed comedy in almost every single city in Canada as well as some cities in Asia. He is the only immigrant who holds an artist VISA for comedy in Canada.

Fangzhou has been a frequent guest on CBC Radio One, and he has also been on SiriusXM and Rogers TV. Fangzhou used to hitchhike across the country and pursue his comedy dream. He is known for being the “hitchhiking comedian”.

Devon Flynn: this small-town boy is a writer, playwright, bicycle mechanic. Sometimes when he puts things together, he gets hilarious results. He has been touring in British Columbia, and he is a regular at many comedy clubs in the province.

DREAMS OF A YOUNG BUSHRAT GUITAR PLAYER “You’re as daft as a brush. You can’t be a musician and do that” North Vancouver,1968. I sat on the makeshift bench - a two by ten on concrete blocks, where I often hunched for hours practicing guitar - and looked out over Lonsdale Avenue.

I was brand new - right out of the wrapper, having just moved out of the old homestead on East Keith Rd. in North Vancouver.

In typical teenage ‘rebel without a cause’ fashion, I had stormed out of the house - a beautiful old brown, shingled, two storey classic that my father had fought tooth and nail to land with his job at the Vancouver Sun. I was sporting that look in my eye, and that tilt in my kilt that males have displayed for thousands of generations as they stormed out of their houses of origin.

These were good folks - the best parents a kid could have. Only weeks later, those ancient bridges busted by the separation ritual were mended, because the recognition of what I was doing was clear, lurking as it did, barely under the surface.

My first digs were spartan to say the least. There was no heat. The one advantage I had was that the ancient flat was located over a barber shop, and that shop needed plenty of hot water. As luck would have it, we were both on the same industrial hot water tank, and the solution to the heat problem was to fill the bathtub with water. It worked like a charm, though it tended to fog up the windows on the colder days, occasionally riming them with ice.

The cash flow was sluggish. As Freddy Carotenuto, saxophonist in one of my early R+B bands, was fond of saying in similar fixes, “Ma fonz alo” - (my funds are low) - it’s an Italian East End thing. He would laugh, then his mother would feed me a second dinner.

For a period of time Jake, (drummer of previous fame), and I lived together. The monthly rent - a paltry $25 - way low even for those days. One time we actually had trouble coming up with it.

We were playing in our first band, the ‘Jerome Bishop Show,’ and had a regular gig at the Outer Limits Cabaret. Even so, we were just scraping by. Then fortune stepped in and I was offered a teaching gig at a music store: North Shore Music, just up the street. It was a lifesaver. It meant I didn’t have to scramble for every nasty gig on the planet to stay alive.

The joint was owned and run by Bob Dalrymple, an early born again Christian who, if he had been Jewish, would have been labeled a ‘mensch.’ He treated his teachers well, never pushed religion on any of us, and helped those around him whenever possible. He was a good man.

Now, comfortably settled in my little hovel above the barber shop, I began my fledgling life in earnest.

— Even then, I knew I wanted to pursue two different paths - music and the bush. I was practicing guitar, and enrolled in the very first Berklee mail instruction course. I remember listening to a 23 year old George Benson and thinking to myself, ‘Damn, this guy’s got chops up the yin yang. I’d better get to work.’

At that same time, I found myself poring over stacks of topographical maps in an effort to locate stakeable land in British Columbia. I had heard that the government of B.C. occasionally opened up land - land you could stake, build a cabin on, and eventually buy for a small fee.

The area that interested me was the Pemberton valley and areas north - Anderson and Lillooet lakes in particular. As it turned out, I was too late. Staking had just closed, and I had missed it. I was disappointed, but I knew it wasn’t the end of the story.

This horse was just getting its stride, and I intended to stay in the saddle.
