October! October means first snow and shorter days and that means that we have to get ready for the winter; the yard all cleaned up and ready to hibernate BUT, that doesn’t mean that we have to hibernate too!
Let’s stay in action at our own rhythm! Saying this, I am inviting you to have a look on our upcoming activities at the page 5 and at our calendar. We try to set up activities and events for all of you.
For the first time at the Community Centre we will have a Costume Halloween Party with prizes for the 3 best costumes, music, dance, the bar will be running from 8pm to 1am. So…let’s start working on our costume and let’s have fun and good laughs!
Please note that the Community Centre will be hosting the Yukon by Yukoners event from October 4th to 6th and there will be NO Coffee & Chat, Yukon Learn, Yoga and Carpet Bowling that week and then the hall will be closed from October 7th to 11th, I will be having few days off. We will be back on the normal schedule of operation on the 12th .

On July 16, as the water levels of the Southern Lakes was rising, the Tagish Flood Response Committee organized a volunteer sandbagging day. The Tagish Flood Committee, which includes members from the Local Advisory Council, Tagish Community Association and the Volunteer Fire Department, had worked with our MLA and the Emergency Measures Organization to give Tagish residents the opportunity to have sandbags ready in case of flooding. The many volunteers brought trucks and trailers, filled sandbags, organized and served a great lunch, and delivered sandbags to residents who had made the request.
A special thankyou to the Wildland Fire Crew and the loader operator who operated the sandbagging machine.
Thankyou to the members of the Food Committee, theTagish Volunteer Fire Department and to everyone who donated food for lunch. Thankyou also to our MLA and the staff at the Emergency Measures Organization.
We have a wonderful community spirit in Tagish and it was very evident on this day!

The Tagish Local Advisory Council does not use the Ward system in the election of its Councillors; however, it usually works out that the Councillors come from the various subdivisions in Tagish.
Anne Kinsey Jansen, Co Chair, resident of Taku Subdivision Cheryl Goulet, Co chair, resident of California Beach area Paul Dabbs, Councillor, resident of downtown Tagish (by the bridge) Glenis Martin, Councillor, resident of Six Mile River East subdivision Bonnitta Ritchie, Councillor, resident of Six Mile River East subdivision Loretta Johns, Councillor, C/TFN Appointment.
The Tagish Advisory Council has been made aware of concerns by Tagish residents regarding the cell service, wifi and land line service here in Tagish. Problems include dropped calls, no signal and really slow Wi Fi. We asked Yukon Government to assist us in determining what can be done to improve these services.
We have been advised that Northwestel has identified increased usage here in Tagish, not so much to do with the number of users but as a result of higher traffic volume per person. Northwestel believes things will improve shortly as we move into the fall and winter seasons as the heavier summer usage falls off. They are currently in the planning stages of bringing fibre optics to Tagish and this will be completed in 2023 and this will definitely improve our services.
Northwestel also advised that Bell is aware of the cell phone issues here in Tagish and will be upgrading the line to the cell tower. Currently there is a copper line to the tower which has limited capabilities, and they intend to upgrade it to fibre. The timing for this is over the next 6 to 8 months, with the intention of improving our service before next summer.
TAC invites volunteers to the Tagish Cemetery on Reid Road on Saturday, October 1st, 2022 from 11 am to 2 pm to join in with the Cemetery Clean Up 2022. Please bring your own shovels, rakes, gloves etc. Wear comfortable, safe shoes and dress for the weather.
Thursday, October 13th, 7 pm, Tagish Community Centre
Any refundable recyclables dropped off at the Transfer Station will be donated to the Community Centre. They can be left by the gated shed beside the outgoing driveway.
