Doris left Atlin for La Tuque, Quebec, some years after her husband Herman’s death in 2004. Little did I know that for at least 40 years the idea of an Atlin quilt has been floating about. Linda passed the blocks to me this summer and I later found more blocks that Corrine Johnson had collected for the same project. They are now put together as one quilt. The quilt is a fun glimpse back in time. One block is dated 1979, but others seem to be from the early 1980’s. Doris’ note mentions sometimes waiting years for a block to be delivered! We know from Doris’ note that some blocks were done in Whitehorse presumably by women with an Atlin connection. Some of the quilter’s initials have been confirmed: CB

Within the month the quilt will be in Atlin where it can make its way to hang in a public spot. Meantime, if you know any of the names I don’t, or wish to share more about the people, I’d love to hear from you. My email is atlinfisher@gmail.com I hope Doris Peterson (1911 – 2013) would be pleased with the quilt. Kate Fisher

FUNK III Graceland - Sun Studios by Paul Lucas May,2016,Memphis TN. How we ended up poking around Graceland and Sun Studios after hours was a mystery ... well ... more of a coincidence I guess in the end. I was with my mate Lynn at the Reuben Awards - the comic art’s version of the Oscars. Lynn and I ran into each other at, of all things, a high school reunion. I had recently lost my second wife, Tina, to cancer, and Lynn had just divorced her second husband. We were flapping about like two fish on a dock. Lynn Johnston garnered fame with her comic strip “For Better Or For Worse,” so occasionally I get to hang with cartoonists - the next best thing to hanging with musicians. This particular year, the awards were in Memphis - and Memphis is magic. So much of American music was born on the River, and Memphis is smack dab in the centre of it. You know something is up as soon as you get off that plane. I swear you can smell the mud. You can’t escape the authenticity of that mud. I’m convinced it’s why the city tends to have little patience with musical bull****. Memphis has both feet on the ground. It is proud of its past and its music lives in the present. Oh, they’ve tarted up Beale Street a little. After all, people come from all over the world to visit this musical birthplace. But it’s still raw. And it’s still a sonic magnet - still a gathering place for the music coming down those tributaries hanging on that Mississippi backbone like so many musical ribs. As it turned out, the National Cartoonist Society had booked Graceland after hours, and we got to wander about the joint more or less unchaperoned. It was an eye opener. Elvis Presley’s family home, while fancyish on the outside, is very much a normal house - nothing over the top, nothing outrageous - just a regulation 50’s house with its arborite clad kitchen, unpretentious living room, dining room, and 1960’s style rec room in the basement, where Elvis used to hang with his pals and band members. They have kept the place exactly as it was, and the building says a lot about the man. I was surprised to see the whole Presley family buried in the back yard - mother, baby brother and dog included. It’s a sobering sight but oddly comforting; pretty organic, and definitely down home. Thing is, along with millions of others, it was that down home, feet in the dirt vibe that connected me to Elvis’ early music - a vibe that came right out of the Mississippi mud. But Memphis wasn’t done with us yet. “There’s more funk here than you can shake a stick at son, so I need you to be payin’ proper attention!” Well, true it was, and that’s a fact. From the Redbirds baseball stadium and the Southlands Racetrack, both of which looked like they could have sprung full bore from a Norman Rockwell

painting, to the cab driver who told us he knew rhythm and blues great Carla Thomas, and would we like to meet her, the funk just kept a comin’. But the best was yet to come: --“Ok, we’re good,” came the prompt as the back door to Sun Studios swung open. We trooped into the rear hallway of the most famous building in Rock and Roll, and I got a little misty. It wasn’t the reaction I was expecting. Excitement, yes but not that. So much of the music I grew up with came out of Sun, Stax and Royal studios, that I guess I was having some kind of visceral reaction to walking through that door. I was walking into Rock and Roll history. It was after hours. Although Sun is still a working studio, the daytime hours are often booked with tours, and Lahna Deering is one of the tour guides. I met Lahna through the Rev Neil Down, an old playing pal from Skagway. ‘Deering and Down’ play and write in the rhythm and blues genre, and they moved to Memphis to pursue their music careers. They had just finished recording ‘Ain’t No Secret’ at Royal Studios with the legendary Willy Mitchell and the Memphis Horns when we arrived. Rev told us that Lahna would be happy to give Lynn and me, along with some of her cartoonist pals, an afterhours tour of Sun, and now here we were - poking around the room where all that music came off the floor - the room housing the famous piano that gathered Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis around it in that historic picture - the piano with the cigarette burn on the keys. I wandered into the sound booth and sat in the chair. I tried to imagine myself surrounded by the activity and excitement of those early sessions - the whirring tape machines, the spinning nobs and flying meters, the chatter through the talk back mic and, best of all, the delicious smell of ozone from a hundred glowing vacuum tubes. What an era that was. What a personal, passionate, physical environment that was to record in. I miss that era. --Funk is like water. Tall, short, fat or thin, we all fare the same in the water. It’s the universal equalizer. Funk is not dependent on field, genre, style, instrument or theoretical knowledge. It is entirely based on intention. It’s what happens when you dig down in the moment and perform. Maria Callas, James Brown, Gustav Mahler and Wes Montgomery could drive non stop from New York to LA in the same car and have a fine old time. And they likely wouldn’t shut up the whole way. Performance spaces have their own version of funk. Some of it is simply based on the intention of their builders and managers, some acquire it as a result of the many great performances held under their roofs, but most of the great venues are a combination of both. All I know is, when you get to perform in any of these places, life is good. And life has meaning. ‘A GUITAR PLAYER ON THE YUKON BORDER’ is available at local bookstores and Amazon.com
