THE CABIN “The second key, you will build in the trees.”

It was decided. We were going to build a cabin; a full scale log cabin way back in the bush, and it was going to be fantastic. It would be built from the trees on the land, felled, bucked and notched with nothing but axes, saws, and our own sweat.

We were three: John Stephen (our fearless leader), brother Jamie and myself - three young teenagers, full of snot, vinegar, and ‘Yahoo! Carpe Diem!’

We planned, we discussed and we measured; far into the night. Then one day, all of a sudden, there we were standing at the chosen spot in that dense rain coast forest, axes in hand, all thinking the same thing: ‘Brother, this is going to be a bigger job than we figured.’

First of all, it was unclear how we were going to get the logs to the site. We were reasonably strong kids, but these logs were big - hemlocks, red cedars and firs, many of which were 18 inches in diameter. A spar tree, blocks and tackle, and a line maybe?

The whole business started with an exuberant John barging into the basement with that look on his face - the one that said, ‘Due to the overwhelming excitement I am experiencing at the moment, it might be impossible to organize the language long enough to croak out my message.’

Inevitably though, the words came tumbling out: “Virgin forest, the whole area. The old trail wasn’t easy to follow. I had to crawl through devils club and brambles. I had to slither on my belly like a snake and sneak past this guard shack. We have to go back up there. We have to explore this place.”

--Kids from the banks of the Tyne, that’s what we were, and western Canada was heaven, in a Viking sort of way.

And now that the gates to heaven were open, we weren’t going back. We were going to explore this forbidden country, climb its mountains, forge its mighty rivers and yes, build a cabin way back where normal mortals could not follow.

Because simply getting there would be a trial, requiring a hike through dense bush, a wade through waist deep icy water, and a bushwack through rain forest to the secret location where we would build the log cabin to end all log cabins.

So, with the decision made, we got to work. We cut with axes, we cut with saws, we hoisted, slung, notched and fitted. And we set up those spar trees, with cables, pulleys, blocks and tackle. We weren’t messing around. The walls rose a foot at a time. Planks for a floor appeared, then we started on the rafters.

Visions of us sitting around a rustic table, in front of a roaring fire, clutching beer steins and toasting our Viking lives, danced in our heads as we toiled. And I don’t believe they ever left.

Then we discovered girls, and somehow the roof never quite got built. Still, in the end, it made no difference.

That cabin had become a part of our DNA, and the building of it changed our lives forever.

--We live in a chaotic universe, and I suspect we spend a lot of time attempting to create meaning in this strange, unpredictable place. It’s not always an easy task, so being handed the gift of a path (or, in my case, two paths) was a lifesaver. A guitar in a trash can? An insatiable drive to build a cabin in the bush? Only an idiot would have missed those signs. The only question remaining was how to combine these two loves with some kind of grace.

“Hope” There are times when hope will be difficult to find, especially in the darkness of night.

Even on days with sunshine streaming down, it can disappear from sight.

Sometimes we can sort things out by ourselves by finding the hope we need to overcome despair.

Sometimes it takes a family member or dear friend to help locate where it resides.

Sometimes prayer or spiritual guidance will provide the answer we seek.

Other times artist friends in the community will bring hope to the forefront by leading us on the right path forward.

They will reveal the beauty they see and the feeling of hope this gives, to inspire us to seek our own vision.

If all else fails, there is always a cup of tea and buttered toast with jam to help bring forth a smile.

ELECTION & ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The Atlin Community Improvement District (ACID) has the object of operating the following services: • Drainage • Fire Protection • Sidewalks • Solid Waste Disposal • Street Lighting • Waterworks • Representing the Community in communication with provincial agencies on land use matters and advising or making recommendations to the Minister of Community Development on land use matters The ACID meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm at the Fire Hall or at the Atlin Recreation Centre.

Meetings are generally 2 hours in length. Each trustee receives an honorarium per regular board meeting (currently $100.00/meeting). Attendance at as many meetings as possible is extremely important.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: March 17 – April 1, 2021 CANDIDATES RUNNING FOR ELECTION will be announced: 7 April 2021 1 - Three-Year Term is open for the position of Trustee Persons entitled to vote at an election must be: • • • •

a Canadian citizen at least eighteen years of age an owner of land in the improvement district a resident of the province for the previous six months, or the legal representative of an owner of land in the improvement district who has died, become insolvent or insane.

When more than one person is registered on title as a landowner each person may vote if they meet all requirements set out above.

One vote is also allowed for each board or corporation that owns land within the improvement district. The board or corporation must designate one person to act as an authorized agent to vote on its’ behalf. This must be done in writing for the polling clerk to verify the voter’s eligibility.

Each person is allowed only one vote regardless of how many properties they own. However, if a person also meets the qualifications as agent, set out above, that person may place a vote on behalf of that board or corporation.

Every person qualified to vote in an improvement district is also qualified to be a trustee.

Or would he be super-impressed With how far things have moved along In the last 100 years towards The goal?

Discernment IV If Adolf Hitler was alive today What would he do?

Would he be astounded That the whole world has been brought to its knees In broad daylight, right before our very eyes Without a single shot being fired?

And, for our part, without a question being asked?

Or would he just pick up where he left off in ‘45 And move the agenda forward To a New World Order?

Big Water Society We are still providing free counselling during this time As the community is aware, the way everyone is conducting business lately is shifting. Sometimes life can stress us out or make us anxious, particularly during this pandemic and the way it has disrupted many of the ways we enjoy our lives, jobs, and relationships with friends and family.

Free mental health counselling will continue to be offered in a safe and positive way by Big Water Society and our counsellor Jan Forde (MSW, RSW) who will provide remote counselling service for the time being.
