GIGS FROM HELL 3

Gigs we’d like to forget but just can’t

“NEVER FOLLOW AN ANIMAL ACT”

Hi Jinx at the Haines Fair

It’s one of the oldest sayings in show biz. Animals are a hard act to follow - a fact we confirmed first hand on a gig we did in S.E. Alaska.

My current band, ‘Human Hands,’ had just finished recording an album, and we were excited about touring our new material. One of the venues we booked was the Haines fair in Haines AK. The location boasted an outdoor stage as well as a nice little concert hall. Our slot ended up being on the outdoor stage - not necessarily a lesser location, but one far more prone to inclement weather and ... well ... other complications.

The turnout was good. Bodies packed the seats, and things were going well for the first half of the set. Then all of a sudden, the crowd just up and left. One minute they were clapping and stomping, and the next thing we knew, they were shuffling out through the exit - the lot of them - not a word, no explanation - nothing. Gone.

We played one more tune to an empty house, and after we were done, I got on the mic and asked the sound man,

“What do you make of that Andy? Where did everybody go?”

“Oh, don’t take it personally,” he replied on his talk back. “The pig races started at 3.30 and I’m pretty sure Miles Davis wouldn’t be able to compete against those pigs. In fact, if you’re done up there, why don’t we just pack it in and head on over. The races are right by the beer tent.”

Well, there it was - upstaged by a bunch of pigs. But I have to say, there is nothing like a pig race to brighten your afternoon, and, truth be known, we were happy enough to cut short the set, pigs or no pigs. As it turned out, a nasty crosswind had sprung up as the crowd was leaving and it was threatening to blow any music we had on the stands into the seats. Which reminds me of another story that, I’m sure, will resonate with every musician who has ever played outdoor concerts.

IT’S AN ILL WIND THAT BLOWS

Passing Wind in the Big Band

Dealing with sheet music in the great outdoors is one of the fundamental lessons in a musician’s life, and it’s a lesson that only needs to be learned once. My personal baptism took place while playing with the Scottsdale Knight Band on an outdoor stage in Scottsdale, AZ.

Before every set at these affairs, the musical director generally calls out the music he wants, and you pull the sheet music from, in my case the guitar book, and stack it in the proper order on the music stand. Then, after you tune up, you’re ready to go .. well ... maybe not so much this particular afternoon.

•••

Thinking I was properly prepared, I sat back in my chair looked around the bandstand, and noticed that most everyone had clothespins stuck on their music stands - lots of ‘em.

“Are we hanging out our washing later?” I laughed, turning to the bass player. He looked at me, raised his eyebrows and started to say ... “I think you are going to need .... “

But then the hand came down on the downbeat and everybody jumped in. With an inexplainable sense of impending doom, I whacked out the first chord. Then things got interesting.

Bit by bit the wind picked up, and pretty soon my music was flapping around like fish on a dock. The title page suddenly whipped off my music stand, and I reacted by dropping my pick and reaching for it as it flew off to Tucumcari, at which point the rest of the music, sensing a chance at freedom, made a break for it. It was every man for himself as sheets flew in all directions.

It’s hard to top the humiliation of wearing an elf suit with bells on it and marching around a shopping mall, but if any incident came close, it was crawling around on my hands and knees between the feet of those players in the trombone, sax and trumpet sections in an attempt to gather up my music. While it’s impossible to play a wind instrument and laugh at the same time, these guys did their best. The squawking and farting that came out of the horn section in that opening tune was hilarious.

The audience looked thoroughly confused, and the musical director, a trumpet player himself, was attempting to stifle his mirth while, at the same time, look shocked and horrified. It was an expression I had never before seen on any human being.

I am now a clothespin convert - washed in the blood of the humble clothespin. and willing to do the good work - work that includes carrying pencils, spare strings, tuners and patch cords; batteries, power strips and extension cords. It has paid off many times over. Still, I often feel like Steve Martin in ‘The Jerk’ leaving home with all that ‘stuff’ when I head off to a gig, but I suppose that’s the price of admission.

There are two jokes that are universal in the world of ‘working musicians’. They are scatological to say the least. When non-musicians hear them, they are puzzled. They don’t understand why their musician friends are on the floor clutching their sides and trying to get a breath. Look ‘em up. You can probably find ‘em by punch line:

“What? And quit show business?” and “The Aristocrats.”

Trust me. It’s all you need to know.

“You Are My Home”

When you’re out there

In blizzard snow

Blinding, daunting I worry so ’til you come home.

When you’re out there

In windswept rain

Pelting, drenching I’m feeling pain ’til you come home.

When you’re out there

In freezing cold Biting, stinging I’d pay with gold To get you home

When you come home You’re all I see. I’m calm again

When you’re with me. You are my home.
