FROZEN COMES TO YAC Audiences can “chill” with YTYP’s annual performance of Frozen

S

ome Yukoners may think Elsa, the magical princess who brings freezing blizzards, ice fog and mountains of snow, has already come. But she truly arrives with a gala and the premiere of Disney’s Frozen.

The Yukon Theatre for Young People (YTYP) is again bringing one of the most ambitious and entertaining projects of the current theatre scene, to the Whitehorse stage. The musical has been lighting up Broadway and London’s West End, almost exclusively, when the rights became unexpectedly available in August and YTYP was caught off-guard.

“It was a bit of a scramble to see if we’d even be capable of doing it,” says director Gabe Hopkins. “It is on a comparable scale to our mainstage productions; there is a level of spectacle in musical theatre, and we are working with students.

“Then there was an opening at YAC [Yukon Arts Centre]. We said, well, it is Frozen; it is winter and it is the Yukon. What could be better?”

The musical was adapted from the animated film Frozen, which Disney released in 2013 and which became an international sensation. The movie itself was inspired by a fairy tale, The Ice Queen, written by Hans Christian Andersen in 1844.

The story is now well-ingrained in popular culture, but for those who have been living under a rock, it is a tale of two princess sisters in a kingdom called Arendelle.

One has magical powers, and the adventure includes storms, spells and self-discovery. Much easier to

portray in words and animation than on the stage with living human beings.

“The level of spectacle is uniquely challenging and requires a lot more preparation for a director,” Hopkins says. “We need to portray magic onstage.”

How to pull this off with a cast, most of whom are too young to shave?

“Because of the nature of YTYP, you only end up with people who want to be there. All of the kids I am working with on this show are truly committed people. I’ve worked with most of them before and they are great people.”

I have taken some inspiration [from her], but I want to bring my own aspects to the role, not just go from the movie. I like putting on the character, reading the script and getting to know my role. Then I’ll bring in the voice, the emotion and the movement. Then there’s the staging and the costume.

“She’s a strong, powerful woman. She doesn’t need a prince to save her. A lot of it is bringing out that strength. She’s growing and figuring herself out.”

Laliberty’s process is not merely internal. She’s also looking forward to cutting loose when the script calls for a display of energy and power.

“I love the song ‘Let it Go!’ The big Act One closer. That’s where there’s a huge storm and everyone is going crazy. I can’t wait to see

how that comes together. It will be a fun one for sure!”

Cohen Ashick-Drainville is likewise immersed in finding the nuances of his role. The 19-yearold plays Kristoff, who delivers ice to the kingdom but is largely an outsider.

“He’s not a normal guy. He grew up without a loving family, but he found the Hidden Folk and they took him in and raised him.

He really likes ice, and his best friend is Sven the reindeer.”

Like Laliberty, Ashick-Drainville plans to put his own stamp on the character.

“He’s kind of sarcastic but lovable. I’ve partly based him on a character from an old TV series.

He’s a weird guy and I like weird things. I just put on the shoes and I’m walking.”

the broader context of the story.

“Kristoff finds his people: a reindeer, a snowman and a princess. It is all about family, the most powerful thing in life. It doesn’t have to be who you are born to; I like the idea of a chosen family.”

Another member of the frozen chosen is Lucas Squires. The 20-year-old faces some unique challenges in his role as Olaf the snowman. An innovative design twist requires he be an actor and a puppeteer, simultaneously.

“It is like how do you put it onstage without it being weird or goofy,” he says, laughing. “Whenever I’m singing or talking, I’ll have to remember to open and close his mouth.”

His preparation also includes contemplating the overall themes within the story.

“It is about family and finding

the right people to surround yourself with. It is actually perfect for us, in our teens and early twenties.”

Here he hits on something that is not about scripts or performing, per se, but will undoubtedly contribute to the chemistry onstage.

The culture of the organization is about building character, life skills and personal growth; each of these cast members says that YTYP has had a formative influence on their life.

“The story is about community and it is reflected in the cast and the artistic team,” says AshickDrainville. “Being at YTYP, I’ve made a ton of friends and had opportunities to be myself. It has been great for my mental health … for the angst and roughness of growing up.”

Laliberty has similar feelings.

“I’m so grateful for how it has made me grow … made [me] the person I am today.”

Squires says the musical and this theatre group were made for each other.

“It is almost art imitating life.

We’ve been creating these bonds, like a family, for a long time. It is nice that Frozen caught up to us.”

The show runs from Jan. 7 to 10, with opening night being a full-on gala. The swanky affair will feature Arendelle Ice cocktails, snowflake-shaped desserts dusted with edible glitter, exclusive photos with the cast, and a backstage tour. Guests are encouraged to attend in “elegant winter attire and a touch of icy glamour.”

So don’t be left out in the warm; take a trip to a place that is Frozen! Once the curtain rises, Yukoners can expect a show that is polished and professional. Also cool.

There is an “increased fervour for birding” in the territory

T

here are some telltale signs of Christmas in the Yukon: craft markets, cars dragging extension cords and, of course, the annual Christmas Bird Count.

The Christmas Bird Count, or the CBC as it is known by diehards, is an annual survey of bird populations across the Western Hemisphere that has been running since 1900. In fact, it is the longest-running citizen science survey in the world. The tradition was based on an older tradition of a Christmas bird hunt, a competition to see who could kill the most or largest birds, until ornithologist Frank Chapman proposed counting them instead, and a tradition was born.

Nowadays, birders sign up to count in a particular zone—a count circle with a diameter of 24 kilometres, and then they buckle down and start counting. Unlike other birding events, the focus is not only on the number of species, but the actual number of birds as well.

In Canada, alone, there were 481 count circles. The Yukon has 13 counting zones including Whitehorse, Watson Lake, Kluane Lake, Dawson City, Teslin, Haines Junction and Mayo. Last year’s count resulted in 24 species, including a whopping 92 bald eagle sightings in Whitehorse. Altogether, there were 3,470 individual birds counted in town—either sighted or heard.

The bird count comes at a time of increased fervour for birding in the Yukon. Local bird watchers are coming off the high of a great summer birdathon, with over 100 species spotted. More recently, a sighting of Eurasian bullfinch,

in Watson Lake, kicked off a fervour—not only was it the first-ever sighting in the Yukon, but the first-ever sighting in Canada at all. As a result territorial birders migrated out to Watson for a rare viewing. Additionally, a doublecrested cormorant at Johnson’s Crossing and an evening grosbeak at Rock Creek got local enthusiasts excited.

So what can we expect for this year’s bird count?

Typically, bird counts are lower in cold conditions, and with the colder-than-normal conditions, lower numbers are possible. Regardless of temperatures, local counters will head out (or watch from their windows) to estimate numbers.

While one might expect plenty of birds to get double counted, local participant Jane Bailey tells me that at this time of year the birds are fairly inactive and

The annual Christmas Bird Count runs between Dec. 14 and Jan. 3 rarely seem to move between zones. Bailey explains that when counters go out, they choose one area to focus on and set-up a system to count.

For large flocks Bailey says, “There are ways of estimating— essentially counting what ten or one hundred individuals look like, and applying that to the whole group.” (This would explain how last year 73,846 snow geese were spotted in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec.

LARA LEWIS RELEASES NEW ‘HALF’ ALBUM Zena inspired

ukon musician Lara Lewis has just put out a new “half” album, Zena.

According to Lewis, some folks in the industry call them EPs. The latest offering from Lewis consists of five songs she wrote as part of the Record Production Month challenge. She calls her style Indie pop, and the songs all have a good groove and ear-wormy melodies but no thrashy guitars.

Lewis says she likes upbeat music from artists like Lizzo, Kaiser Chiefs and Wet Leg, adding she wouldn’t say they were influences, necessarily, but their songs are definitely in her listening world.

The new album also takes inspiration from a classic TV show called Xena: Warrior Princess and Zena is a riff on that, says Lewis, adding the name mirrors her own

battles, particularly the one she is going through now with brain cancer. Lewis says her sister, Loyola, did the cover art for the album and it was originally a design she did on a bowl their mom made.

Lewis recorded in Whitehorse with musician/producer Jordy Walker, with some funding to help her get the project rolling.

“I received a Performing Musician Grant from the Department of Economic Development,” she says. “There are a limited number of studios you can use with that, and I like Jordy. I think he is one of the most-creative engineers/ producers in town.”

Lewis says her last album, Lov Lavatic, was also produced by Walker.

Joining Lewis on the EP are musicians Shannon Gladwin on bass, Lonnie Powell on drums,

and Jordy Walker on guitar. When she recorded the demos at home, Lewis says she had limited instrument choices, so the drums were all canned (pre-recorded), the bass lines were played on her Roland X7 keyboard; and she added different patch sounds from that keyboard, such as accordion, harmonica and mellotron.

Lewis says she had about eight songs when she walked into Walker’s studio, adding there were three tracks she definitely wanted to record, then chose the other two after she was there.

She ended up picking the tracks that she thought needed the least amount of tinkering, she says.

Lewis adds she sometimes gets tired of the sound of “real” piano and feels the piano sometimes doesn’t stand up well to other instruments, like electric guitar.

In the end, she went with the Rhodes piano sound and the oldtime feel of the mellotron on the song “Lazarus,” which also hap-

The five-song EP is available now on popular streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, TikTok, Pandora, and Deezer. and Lewis adds there’s currently no plans for a physical release. “Who listens to CDs anymore?”

Lewis will be out of the territory at the start of the new year but says a show is likely in the Yukon, in March or April.

Reflecting on her new EP, Lewis says it’s perfect music for weekend work plans or adventures away from home. “The best time to listen to this album is on a Sunday afternoon when you are doing housework. Or in your car on a roadtrip.”

She adds, the music won’t be for everyone because everybody has different tastes in music.

“I don’t expect my 86-yearold mother to love these songs,” Lewis says. “But I will burn a disc for her anyway. She’s the only one who gets a physical copy. Lucky you, Ma!” ■

A WOMAN MUST SAVE HERSELF

ritish author Beth Lewis has done what few novelists who wrote about the Klondike Gold Rush have attempted: written a historical crime novel centred entirely on women of the Klondike Gold Rush. Beth Lewis’s novel The Rush, published in June 2025, weaves together the stories of women who are based on Emma Kelly, Belinda Mulrooney, and Harriet Pullen—all women who came to the Yukon during the gold rush. The author used them as inspiration and the core of her fictionalized characters who are confronted with a murder mystery set in Dawson City.

Between 1896 and 1899, approximately 100,000 prospectors attempted the journey to the Klondike Goldfields, but only about 30,000 made it, with many arriving too late to strike it rich.

Ten percent of the stampeders were women who followed their men or ended up in Dawson to work as prostitutes. However, there were other women as well, such as Kate, a journalist.

The reader follows Kate, a journalist, from Skagway to Dawson City. She has a horrific experience on the Dead Horse Trail and survives an avalanche on the White Pass, but loses her guide to the mass of snow. She was the first woman to canoe the White Horse Rapids. She liked it so much that she did it twice. Meanwhile, at the Fairview Hotel in Dawson, businesswoman Martha Malone tries to protect her hotel and her girls from local gangster Bill Mathers.

And then there is Ellen, a miner’s wife, trapped in an unhappy marriage to Charlie.

When Molly, one of Martha’s prostitutes, is murdered, their three stories weave together into a mystery that will change their lives.

Real women behind them

Lewis drew each character from real Klondike women. Kate is based on Emma Kelly, the journal-

periences that the author used for research.

Martha combines the spirit of two women: Harriet Pullen, who was famous for her apple pies in Skagway and built the Pullen Hotel; and Belinda Mulrooney, known as the richest woman of the Klondike, who ran the Fairview Hotel in Dawson. She owned several gold claims and it is said that she had a sluice box running in her saloon to collect the gold dust that her customers lost.

Even the victim of the murder has historical roots: Molly Walsh ran a tent on the trail and married an abusive man who killed her.

She was mourned by a heartbroken suitor who commissioned a statue in Skagway, which is still standing today.

An interesting role is that of the fortune teller, a woman who appears and disappears, and tells “men what they wanted to hear, and women what they needed to hear.”

A woman in the Klondike was either a prostitute or a miner’s wife. But some brave women were none of those and had to protect themselves: “A woman must save herself,” writes Lewis.

Lewis has never set foot in the Yukon, a fact that makes her detailed story of Dawson’s chaos and the trail’s dangers all the more impressive. In a podcast on BBC Radio 2, the author says that she found research surprisingly easy: “There were so many writers going to the Klondike.” She read the written records of journalist Emma Kelly. Also, there are lots of pictures of the stampeders because Kodak just released a portable camera, years before the gold rush, and it was much easier to take pictures.

Beth Lewis says that as a child she was fascinated by stories of Jack London. Lewis says she has been carrying this idea for years.

And now it is out in The Rush by Beth Lewis, published by Pegasus Books. ■

t was the night before Christmas on the Beaver River I’d just finished a scoff of fried moose liver.

The silence is real, not like in the city, Inhabitants of such I often feel pity.

The dogs are asleep, curled up in their house; Nothing is stirring, not even a mouse.

But wait, what’s that sound that I hear, No clatter of hooves, not Santa’s reindeer, ‘Tis more of a shuffle with big hairy feet; By gosh it’s a sasquatch, now isn’t that neat!

He peers in my window, a big toothless grin, It’s plain to see he wants to come in.

I open the door with much apprehension, He shakes my hand, which eases the tension.

It’s been a week since my house guest arrived, I’m beginning to wonder how I’ve survived.

He grunts, he groans, he craps on the floor, I’ve had enough as I point to the door.

Get out of my cabin, you nasty beast, Go back to the forest, why don’t you head east.

I’ve hurt his feelings, it’s plain to see,

A tear in his eye, he clearly likes me.

He comes back in spring, he thinks I’m his mate!

Now what have I done to deserve such a fate?

Not meant to be, I quickly explain; I have a girl friend, her name is Jane.

He takes this all in with dignity and grace, Looks like I’ve convinced him, he needs his own race.

Next morning he is gone, not leaving a trace; Peace and quiet are now in place.

Now who would believe such a dubious tale; He sent me a selfie to my email.

THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF YUKON FRANCOPHONE WOMEN

Angélique Bernard is a translator, communications specialist, radio host, writer and community volunteer. She was the Commissioner of Yukon from 2018 to 2023.

Jocelyne Isabelle

J

ocelyne Isabelle was born in 1978 in Montreal, Quebec.

She took one year of special education, then completed a college diploma in early childhood education, and a college certificate in childcare management. In addition to her work as a daycare director in Quebec, she taught early childhood education and was a content specialist responsible for evaluating the instructional materials used in the early childhood care-management program.

Jocelyne arrived in the Yukon at the end of March 2016 for an 18-month contract to fill in for the director of the Garderie du petit cheval blanc, who was on maternity leave. When her contract at the daycare ended, Jocelyne knew she wanted to come back to the Yukon. The board of directors of Les Essentielles called her, as the organization needed an executive director. She turned them down three times, as the job was not in her field of expertise. But she ended up accepting and never looked back! She has been executive director of the Garderie du petit cheval blanc since September 2020.

Another area in which Jocelyne got involved was running for school elections and being elected a trustee of the Yukon Francophone School Board (CSFY). This, too, was a great experience. Having been a member of other boards of directors, she knew how boards ran, but the role of trustee allowed her to learn a new governance approach.

For Jocelyne, the Yukon is really a place where she can take advantage of wonderful opportunities that she would probably not have had in Quebec.

Louise-Hélène Villeneuve

L

ouise-Hélène Villeneuve was born in 1975 in Jonquière, Quebec.

She earned a college diploma in humanities, with mathematics, from Cégep de Chicoutimi; and a bachelor’s degree in international commerce and marketing from McGill University, in 1998.

Louise-Hélène made her first trip to the Yukon in the summer of 2000. She came back and, in 2002, launched her own business, an adventure she had thought impossible in her early twenties.

She very quickly got involved with the francophone community. She was approached to run for president of Les Essentielles, a position she held for nine years and that taught her a great deal.

She represented the Yukon at the Canadian Francophone Women’s Alliance and became its president for a few years. This position allowed her to contribute to the Forum of the Canadian Francophone and Acadian Communities and the Canadian Francophone Leaders Forum. Representing the Yukon was a privilege for her.

In 2008, she won the Volunteer of the Year Award presented by the Association francoyukonnaise and, in 2012, the Remarkable Woman Award from Les Essentielles.

Between 2010 and 2012, she worked on a master’s degree in leadership at Royal Roads University in Victoria.

Louise-Hélène became the acting executive director of the organization for a few months and then executive director until 2020. She currently works at the Yukon Foundation.

In the Yukon, Louise-Hélène met a partner who loves nature as much as she does and has the opportunity to contribute to her francophone community by sharing her knowledge, her expertise and her love of the French language.

2025 marks the 30th anniversary of Les Essentielles. For this occasion, short biographies of Yukon francophone women will be presented throughout the year in the pages of our paper. Madeleine Piuze

M

Sandra St-Laurent

adeleine Piuze was born in 1977, in Quebec City, and grew up in LacBeauport.

Madeleine earned a college diploma in social science, with an international profile from the Cégep François-Xavier Garneau, in Quebec City; and a bachelor’s degree in social services and a certificate in addictions, both from the Université de Sherbrooke.

Madeleine had the dream of visiting northern Canada to discover another culture, as well as its natural beauty and mountains. She settled on the Yukon after talking with her sister, who had visited the region; and her friend, who spent a year in the territory as a French monitor.

And so, in July 2005, Madeleine drove from Quebec City to Whitehorse.

She got a job as a mental health and addiction therapist with the government of Yukon, in 2005. This work allows her to practise the values that are important to her, such as openness, compassion, curiosity, acceptance without judgment, personal growth, and solidarity. She offers services in French.

From 2006 to 2009, Madeleine sat on the board of directors of Les Essentielles as secretary-treasurer.

Madeleine is grateful to be able to raise her children (Raphael, born in 2007; Rosalie, born in 2009; and Justin, born in 2012) in the spectacular, natural setting of the Yukon and in an active Francophone community. She has had, and is still having, lots of outdoor adventures— especially hiking, skiing and canoeing.

The Yukon has allowed Madeleine to grow, with her family, surrounded by nature and within an exceptional community.

S

andra St-Laurent was born in 1974 in Sherbrooke, Quebec.

She studied at the Cégep de Sherbrooke and earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology at Université Laval.

In the fall of 1998, Sandra moved to the Yukon to write her master’s thesis, finally achieving her northern dream. One week after her arrival, she was sitting on two boards of directors: Association francoyukonnaise and Les Essentielles.

In 2001, she co-managed Les Essentielles and she set up the Health Community Network, which she has managed since 2003.

Sandra is the regional coordinator for British Columbia and the Territories of Haiku Canada. She represents the Yukon on the board of directors of the Canadian Francophone Western and Northern Writers (RÉNOC). She is the founder of a virtual magazine for Haiku Canada (in English) and acts as a revisor and graphic designer for Solstice Haiku and Haiku Canada.

Sandra won the Alma Castonguay Award for a remarkable woman, given by Les Essentielles in 2007; and the HélèneCharbonneau Award in cultural outreach, given by Communication-Jeunesse in 2017.

In 2023, she received the Exceptional Engagement Award from the Association franco-yukonnaise.

The connections she has made in the Yukon, whether in the fields of health, arts or equity (feminism and Francophonie), have been instrumental in her life. She considers herself lucky to be able to participate in such a beautiful francophone arts community and to contribute to its development and well-being. She was attracted to the Yukon by the landscapes and has stayed because of the people. ■

n 2020, in response to the closing of public spaces due to the pandemic, Nicole Bauberger created a gallery on the trails behind her house in Hillcrest. She named it the Dalton Trail Trail Gallery. She filled the trees with ceramic dresses, and ravens made of recycled rubber and clay. The site became a place for trail users to engage with art when all of the indoor galleries in town were closed.

Almost six years after I first wrote about the gallery, I revisited it one day this December with Bauberger. The focal piece in the space is Finding Our Way, a dress with a framework of wire onto which hundreds of strips of orange flagging tape are tied. As we stand next to the work, Bauberger removes more strips of tape that hang in the trees and attaches them to the dress. It’s forever a work in progress.

Bauberger conceived of Finding Our Way in 2021 after the discovery of what was believed to be 215 children who were buried at the former site of the Kamloops Indian Residential School. At the time, some people decided to remember the children by wearing orange shirts on Canada Day. Bauberger was motivated to create an art piece that encourages a deeper reflection on our “unequally shared heritage of colonization.” This sentiment is expressed through a cardboard sign hung next to Finding Our Way: “Let’s keep finding ways to live here together. Orange Shirt Day, every day.”

Bauberger meant for the project to continue until July 31, 2021, but even today, people continue to add orange strips to the branches by using a roll of flagging tape that Bauberger has hung there.

The gallery has also become a gathering place for students from Elijah Smith Elementary School, who use the site for activities around the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and for commemorations related to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. These uses suggest that Finding Our Way continues to have a meaningful impact in the community.

“It’s not merely performative,” Bauberger says, “It seems to be serving some sort of purpose.”

My visit that day also included a stop at the playground in Hillcrest Park, just a short walk from the Dalton Trail Trail Gallery. There, Bauberger, with the help of some of her neighbours, has installed another public art piece that the artist conceived of several years ago. Dubbed the Winter Garden, the work consists of a number of cardboard-based paintings of flowers, animals, landscapes, hearts—all made by children in workshops led by Bauberger, with one guest leader over the years.

The Winter Garden also emerged from the days of Covid, when, Bauberger says, people needed “moments to connect in a good way.” She cut open an old bike box and invited neighbourhood kids to draw flowers on it.

Then she cut the flowers out for a garden.

From there, the garden continued to grow in post-pandemic times. For a few years, the Winter Garden was a Kids Kreate program at the Yukon Arts Centre (YAC), and the cardboard pieces were installed in the garden around the YAC. Similar to Finding Our Way, the Winter Garden requires community engagement to bring it into being. The garden has become an annual event, now, in Hillcrest, where the community association supports workshops for creation in the fall and for installation in the winter. The haphazard arrangement of the garden is thanks to the volunteers placing pieces as they like, without any preconceived plan.

Bauberger accepts her lack of control in the process, just as she accepts every painting without judgement. “The diversity of things is what’s so great about it,” she says.

The many small works that make up the garden have endured months of Yukon winters. And surprisingly so, because the Winter Garden works are small paintings on cardboard, which one might think would succumb to the elements. However, the cardboard is surprisingly resilient. When they are finally too damaged to install, the paintings are recycled after having spent many winters in the greenspace and out of the waste stream.

While the most obvious connection I find between Finding Our Way and the Winter Garden is the community participation in their creation, Bauberger identifies another less explicit relationship. For many years, she has worked to situate her art practice in a way that doesn’t take away from Indigenous creators. In the case of the garden, the colourful cardboard flowers pay a quiet tribute to Indigenous beadwork artists whose beautiful floral designs can bring joy in the dark northern winters.

“The Winter Garden is, to a reasonable degree, inspired by the practices of a bunch of Indigenous art that I’ve seen,” Bauberger explains. “It doesn’t copy it, but when I look at beautiful beaded mitts, they all have floral motifs on them.

“You can tell a whole bunch of stories about what those motifs are about, but they’re also flowers when there are

no flowers. They’re imaginary flowers that give us the strength to get through winter.”

For Bauberger, both the Win-

ter Garden and Finding Our Way are part of her efforts to “[try] to be a non-Indigenous artist in a way that doesn’t make Indigen-

ous art invisible.

“They are both gestures in that direction,” she says.
