CANADA DAY PARADE MONDAY, JULY 1ST Canada Day Parade July 1st is fast approaching.

This year's theme is "Your Canadian Hero" but Celebrating Canada is the overall theme. We would love to encourage everyone of all ages to participate by decorating your car, truck, bike, wagon, wheelbarrow, kubota, grater or honey wagon!!!! Yep, it takes all kinds to make our Parade a success!!! Make this a family event with you & your kids or grand kids in the parade!!! On July 1st arrive at the Atlin Rec Center 10:30 am for positioning in the line up with the parade starting at 11 am. Come out and have some fun with your neighbours. David William Gairns January 18, 1934 – October 2, 2018 in Edmonton Alberta Survived by his wife Phyllis, sons Doug (Nicuta) and Bruce (Monica), daughter Bonnie (Wilder), and his grandchildren: Antonius (Jaimie), Anita, Ben, Paloma, and greatgranddaughter Naiya. Also mourning Dave’s passing are his brother Harry (Barb), cousins Bob (Carolyn) Campbell and Bev Zielke, niece Anne (John) Pousette, nephews Doug (Becky) and Stuart (Sandra) Gairns. “Uncle Dave” is also lovingly remembered by Rob and Ian Campbell. Dave was pre-deceased by his parents, Ruth and Charlie, granddaughter Christian, cousin-in-law Joe Zielke and sister-in-law Marg Gairns.

Dave was born in Vancouver, but at the tender age of 4 months, returned “home” to Atlin, B.C., a place that held a special place in his heart throughout his life. In the Fall of 1942, Dave and his family moved back to Vancouver, where he completed his schooling. Dave met Phyllis in typing class at John Oliver High School in 1950 and they soon started dating. Dave returned to the North, to Whitehorse, in 1953 and a year later Phyllis joined him. They were married at Whitehorse United Church in November 1954. Dave’s career opportunities kept him in his beloved North for the next 30 years. Dave worked for the Federal Government in Whitehorse, Dawson City and Yellowknife before joining the City of Whitehorse in 1971, first as City Clerk, later becoming City Manager. After a brief stint as Deputy Minister of Municipal Affairs for the Territorial Government, Dave moved to Castlegar, B.C. where he was City Manager for several years, retiring in 1989 to form his own consulting business. He retired completely in 2008.

Dave was a dedicated Rotarian for over 40 years, participating in Rotary Clubs in both Whitehorse and Castlegar. Dave was also active in the United Church in Whitehorse, Yellowknife, and Castlegar. As a member of the Yukon Automobile Association he proudly displayed his plaque on all his vehicles.

Dave will be remembered by his friends and family for his generous hospitality, his way with words, his dry sense of humour, his ability to build or fix almost anything, his absolute honesty and his love of dogs. Dave was very proud of his children and doted on his grandchildren. His legacy of service and integrity lives on in them. Dave was loved and he is missed.

A memorial for Dave will be held at the upper cemetery in Atlin at 1:30 pm on Saturday, June 29, 2019 followed by a celebration of Dave’s life and reception at the Globe Theatre at 3:30 pm. All are welcome to attend these events.

THE RANT STREET BOAT RAMP PROJECT Years ago the boat launch ramp at the foot of Rant Street was donated to the town of Atlin by Harper Reed on the condition it remain a free public ramp. The Atlin District Board of Trade acquired a lease on the property from the province. The leased property deteriorated over the years and then wave action from last fall’s high winds really did a number on it. Because the BBMA liability insurance did not cover the Rant Street lease, the BBMA was not meeting the terms of the lease and it was decided perhaps the lease should be returned to the Board of Trade. Through discussions with the association’s insurance broker coverage was extended to include the Rant Street property.

At a subsequent BBMA executive meeting, it was unanimously decided the BBMA would retain the lease and would undertake the repairs and improvements to the launch ramp for the good of the community. The retaining wall supporting the small parking area would also be replaced in concert with Guy Anttila whose property abuts the BBMA lease.

A work bee was called for Saturday May 18, and with help from Smallwood’s Contracting, the ramp was widened, lengthened and readied for delivery of cement. Cement was delivered on May 22 and Atlin now has a ramp to be proud of and one that can easily handle larger boats. Work on the retaining wall is being done by Smallwood rd Contracting and commenced on May 23 .

The manual labour for this project was done entirely by the BBMA “Over the Hill Gang” who volunteered their time and muscle. The cost for this project has not been finalized but the BBMA will no doubt be seeking financial assistance through donations, fund raising, etc. Here are some before, during, and after photos.

Inspiring future health-care practitioners at Atlin School With a focus on inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals, the Healthcare Travelling Roadshow recently visited Atlin School. The event in Atlin was part of a full-week tour that also visited Dawson City and Whitehorse.

Held every spring, the Roadshow brings together a multidisciplinary group of post-secondary healthcare students to showcase careers at rural high schools. The roadshow was conceived in 2010 at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) as a grass roots initiative to help address rural healthcare recruitment.

This year was the first visit to the Yukon and Atlin.

“During our visits, local students have a chance to handle different medical equipment,” says Dr. Sean Maurice, the roadshow’s creator and a senior lab instructor in the UBC Northern Medical Program based at UNBC. “They get to learn everything from how to check reflexes to how to prepare pill packs or practicing intubation.

“At the same time, the roadshow also helps our participating health-care students learn about rural practice and recreation opportunities, as well as getting a better understanding of each other’s professions.”

Eight different disciplines were represented during the visit to Atlin School, including cardiology technology, dental hygiene, kinesiology, med laboratory science technology, medicine, nursing, pharmacy and physical therapy.

“The Roadshow has grown from a small pilot project into a significant provincial initiative in B.C. to address the rural healthcare workforce,” said Maurice. “In 2019, we, for the first time, ran four different week-long trips. We strive to put healthcare careers into the minds of rural youth, and put rural practice into the minds of healthcare students.”

Since its inception, the roadshow has connected with more than 8,500 high school students in 43 communities throughout BC. The Healthcare Travelling Roadshow is delivered in partnership with UNBC, the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine (UBC), Northern Medical Programs Trust, Rural Education Action Plan, Interior Health, and Vancouver Island Health.
