The Atlin Whisper “Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world.” Margaret Mead

Susan (Susie) Deborah Smith

March 25,1957 – November 15,2023

“Once in a while someone very special comes along and makes the world a lot more wonderful” It is with extreme sorrow we announce the sudden passing of our sweet Susie. Susie was predeceased by her parents Roy and Norah Smith and her youngest sister Shelley. She leaves to mourn her siblings: Helen, Roy (Diane) and beloved nephews Ian and Graham, a large extended family along with many good friends. Susie was born deaf, at a very young age she left Atlin, B.C. and travelled to Vancouver to attend the Jericho Hill School for the Deaf and Blind. She graduated and returned north to live in Whitehorse but a lack of American Sign Language services in the Yukon made it difficult for her to stay so she moved on to Winnipeg MB to attend the Red River College for the Deaf where she stayed for 25 years living and working. In 2011 she returned to Whitehorse and this time she was able to stay as the Deaf Community had been able to secure ASL interpreter services. Susie was hired by the Yukon Territorial Government into a clerk position and worked in variety of departments, a job she loved. She was proud and grateful to be given this opportunity, she spoke highly of all her co-workers, she looked forward to going to work every day. She was presented with the Service Excellence Award by the Public Service Commissioner. Susie was elected to be the Yukon representative for the Deaf Grassroots Movement, an organization advocating and promoting accessibility and barrier free services for all deaf people. She also taught sign language to young folks with hearing impairments when the need arose. She never allowed her hearing challenges to interfere with what she wanted to accomplish, she was always positive, had a huge heart, and loved events and socials. Susie kept lifelong friendships from near and far, was well loved, and cherished. She is so dearly missed by us all and leaves a big hole in our hearts. May her bright light and sweet smile shine on. Celebration of her Life will be held in late spring/early summer. Details to follow.

IN THE MOMENT VII The Local Talent Struts its Stuff “Ah but they’ve never seen the Northern Lights They ain’t ever seen a hawk on the wing.”

So goes the bridge to Jerry Jeff Walker’s ‘Night Rider’s Lament,’ - one of the favourites around kitchen tables in the North. If you sing the chorus in three part harmony, it will make you weak at the knees. It joins a hundred more: ‘Evangelina’, ‘North West Passage’, ‘Pancho and Lefty’ ... they line up like skittles, and you can sing ‘til dawn if you care to, guitars a’ strummin’, banjos a quackin’ and mandolins a’ pluckin’. Acoustic music - it’s the best. --I’ve spent a lot of time in major cities. They’re not a loose lot in the city. The chances of you wandering over to your neighbour’s house, guitar clutched under your arm, and dropping in to play a few tunes are ... well ... nil. In fact, they might just call the cops on you. “Somebody just showed up at my front door holding a guitar. I don’t know what he wants. I think he might be deranged.“ It’s very different out on the land. Folks clutching guitars are coming ‘round your house all the time. They’re a freakin’ menace. You know you’re hatched as soon as you hear that knock on the door because it means you are going to be up half the night, even though you promised Terry you’d pick him up at six to help turn his boat over. --GETTIN’ DOWN AT THE MASONIC HALL No Hat, No Bell, No Problem

You’ve already met John Kilmer. Well one day, John decided he would like to have a separate building to store some of his better instruments and sound equipment - a building that might double as a rehearsal and jam studio. He was eyeing the vacant Masonic hall in downtown Atlin. The main floor was the current home of the post office, the hall took up the second floor. Carol Studer was our postmistress at the time and, far from being worried about the noise that might result, she was enthusiastic about the idea. So up the steep little stairs cleaving to the side of the building the amps, racks, drums and guitars went - up and into the inner sanctum of Atlin’s Masonic brothers.

The room itself was peculiar, having a floor with a sunken middle section and a raised dais of sorts at one end. Still, it worked well for music, and the dais made a perfect drum platform. I’m not sure what the Grand Imperial Poobah would have said about the whole business, but it suited us just fine. In the early days, Ilene used the front room of the hall as a counseling office. It was a beautiful location. looking out as it did, on Atlin Mountain. I had just discovered digital synthesizers, and now had a ‘state of the art’ Roland D110 multitimbral synth and Roland MC-500 Mk II sequencer. It was cutting edge technology at the time, along with my 286 PC - a computer boasting a hefty 40 megabyte hard drive - a drive barely big enough to store a picture of Willy’s dog dish. Still, those were the times. Set up in my little cubbyhole adjacent to Ilene’s office, I would tap away on this magic new technology while she counseled next door and Kilmer rewired his latest electronic acquisition in the inner sanctum down the hall. The post office downstairs was busy with locals coming and going, and the smell of Carol Studer’s home baking permeated the entire building. It was all very cosy. --It was jam night in ‘the room’ at the Masonic hall. I was the last one to arrive. The crew was already there and putting their stamp on Merle Haggard’s ‘Lonesome Fugitive. Rick Sudlow, Len Parisien, Dave Parisien, Alex McConnell and John Kilmer, heads down, were whacking out chords and belting out lyrics. I could have walked in with my underwear on my head and they wouldn’t have noticed. --JAMMIN’ THE GLOBE The Locals Rise to the Occasion

Atlin,Oct,2020. It was gonna be fun - an affair featuring just locals. The Globe brought in performers from all over, but every now and then the joint put on a night where the local talent got to shake its collective ass. Early events featured the regular suspects, from Ian Coster to the Parisien brothers, but also included performers like Atlin’s own Edie Nelson reading her poetry. Heather Keny took over the Globe Theatre in 2018. I’ve known Heather since the ‘90s, and she was the perfect person for the job. Thing is, organizing the local talent to arrive at the same place at the same time is like herding cats. When the night came though, the gloves were off and everybody was in the saddle (including the Singing Metaphors from all accounts). The acts ranged from singer/songwriter Rebecca Law - a recent Atlin arrival originally from Trinidad, to fiddler Harry Colwell, and Rosie O’Reilly - nurse at the local health centre. A good time was had by all.

THANK YOU Atlin Junior Rangers

“Amazing Grace”

A big THANK YOU goes out to the The Atlin Junior Rangers for their donation to the Atlin Historical Society. They made blank greeting cards from paintings of some of the local historic locations, which they then sold as a fundraiser for the Atlin Historical Society. After the close of sales on the 16th at the Atlin Recreation Centre, Dani McNeil gave us the results of the sales, $220.00 cash, plus the remainder of the cards for us to sell at the museum.

When a young child is feeling happy The joy radiating from their smile Along with giggles and laughter Is an Amazing gift to behold.

Thank you for your time, talent, and energy. It is much appreciated. Atlin Historical Society

When a young child sees nana is alone She brings homemade cake and lemonade Then cuddles up to her holding hands In a heartwarming display of Grace. Jeff Salmon
