Yukon RCMP – 2015 08 26 RCMP talks safety with community and businesses Whitehorse, Yukon As part the RCMP’s continued effort to work with community stakeholders to strengthen community safety, Whitehorse RCMP met with various business owners, non-government agencies and community members at the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce office, Wednesday, August 19th, to discuss recent break-ins and mischief to businesses and non-government agencies.

Representatives from Whitehorse Bylaw Services, Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce, the Whitehorse RCMP, Miles Canyon Historic Railway Society, Yukon Transportation Museum, Yukon Historical & Museums Association, community members and the Watershed Coffee Shop & Bar were present.

The two-hour meeting covered a variety of topics including ways to better secure businesses, and ways in which the public can contribute to community safety and security.

The group, created in 2013, meets to discuss various topics as it relates to community safety. Information shared at these quarterly meetings, along with other community meetings held throughout the year, is a valuable source of input, and helps to inform the Whitehorse RCMP’s Annual Performance Plan.

“The Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce is pleased to be an active participant and host these meetings.

The Chamber has been involved in crime prevention for several years and has produced, in partnership with the RCMP and all levels of government, a crime prevention checklist for businesses.” Said Rick Karp, President of the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce. “The group was called together recently to discuss, and try to find solutions to the spike in break and enters, vandalism and graffiti. We are pleased with the results of the meeting and believe that if our community pulls together we can have a positive impact on this issue."

Yukon government, City of Whitehorse partner for tourism and business mission WHITEHORSE—The Government of Yukon and the City of Whitehorse will lead a tourism and business mission to Yellowknife next month, Minister of Tourism and Culture Elaine Taylor and Mayor Dan Curtis announced today.

“The Yukon government is pleased to partner in this mission to Yellowknife with the City of Whitehorse,” Taylor said. “A key objective of the mission is to showcase Air North’s service between Whitehorse, Yellowknife and Ottawa. It will also strengthen our relationships with the Government of the Northwest Territories and N.W.T. tourism and business operators and generate partnership opportunities.”

Minister Taylor and Mayor Curtis will lead the mission on October 1 and 2 in conjunction with: the Yukon Chamber of Commerce; Air North, Yukon's Airline; the Government of the Northwest Territories; the City of Yellowknife and the N.W.T. business community.

The tourism and business mission flows from a recently renewed two-year tourism partnership agreement to promote Yukon and Whitehorse as a great place to visit, live, work and play.

“The City of Whitehorse is delighted to partner with the Yukon government in this collaborative tourism and business mission to Yellowknife with the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce and City of Yellowknife,” Curtis said. “We’re excited that this initiative will create new opportunities for Whitehorse residents and businesses and attract new visitors to the territories.

The Yukon Chamber of Commerce will play a key role in coordinating the mission and arranging the participation of members of the tourism industry and business community.

"The Yukon Chamber of Commerce is pleased to be working on this effort with the cities of Whitehorse and Yellowknife, as well as the governments of Yukon and N.W.T.," chamber president Peter Turner said. "This delegation will facilitate engagement between members of the business community, as well as members of the NGO and government sectors. We invite businesses and other organizations to contact us at the Yukon Chamber and participate in this delegation."

The Department of Economic Development will provide assistance to help offset travel costs for industry and business representatives participating in the mission. Air North, Yukon's Airline, is also offering participants a special discounted airfare.

Tourism Co-operative Marketing Fund (TCMF) - Wait-listed Funded by Tourism Yukon, the TCMF assists tourism businesses, First Nations Governments, municipalities and organizations market their Yukon tourism product.

The Trade & Consumer program of the TCMF is now fully subscribed, and new applications will be added to the wait list. As funds for approved applications are released based on actual reported expenses, unused funds will become available to wait listed applicants. How does mining impact your life?

The process of mining – drilling, processing, grinding, shipping, etc. – o en seems very far removed from our daily lives, and is thus easy to dismiss as unimportant. But is it really? Yukon Chamber of Mines will be using this space to shed light on how mining impacts our daily life. It might surprise you!

Smart phones only seem to be ge ng smarter. Revealed this past week, the new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus boast new technologies such as a 3D touch, faster microchip processing, and a larger camera. All these new technologies, however, s ll come from elements that are as old as… well, the earth. The screen of an iPhone is glass, made up of a mixture of aluminium and silicon (called aluminosilicate glass). There are a variety of Rare Earth compounds in iPhones, which are mined mainly in China, and are essen al to the func oning of the device. Cerium, for example, is used in making the iPhone as smooth and comfortable in your hand as possible. Europium is a phosphor that creates a bright red on an iPhone screen. Neodymium is used in magnets that make speakers vibrate to create sound. Copper is used for wiring as well as in the micro electrical components, well as gold and silver. Nickel is used in the microphone, and silicone is used in the microchip that makes the phone so smart. iPhones – and all smart phones, have become essen al communica on tools for many of us. They are a way to connect with people all over the world and can be an endless informa on resource. That being said, it is important to keep in mind just how much your iPhone is a connec on to the global mining industry. Without mining, communica on at our finger ps would be much more difficult to a ain.

HIGHEST RECYCLING VOLUMES EVER WHITEHORSE – City Council would like to share that Whitehorse residents are recycling more than ever. In 2012, 19% of waste was diverted from the landfill. As of the end of June 2015, waste diversion is now up to 33%.

“Whitehorse residents have shown their commitment to recycling,” said Mayor Dan Curtis.

“This is a record level of diversion for Whitehorse and we are very pleased we are on the path to reaching our 50% diversion goal.”

The Solid Waste Action Plan (SWAP) was adopted in 2013, and focused on recycling and composting key high volume commodities. Since then, the City has made cardboard, clean wood waste, and organics from food service businesses controlled wastes at the landfill.

Controlled waste means these items must be separated from regular waste.

City Council has also continued to work on developing a curbside recycling service for residents. A Request for Proposals is being drafted and expected to be released this fall. This blue box service would provide sustainable funding for recycling to ensure recyclable materials do not end up in the City’s landfill.

“We are very grateful for the tremendous work that both recycling processors do for this community,” said Deputy Mayor Dave Stockdale. “Waste diversion has been one of this Council’s top priorities. A blue box program goes a long way to creating a long term sustainable funding mechanism for recycling.”

It is likely that the City’s diversion credits will be over-subscribed by processors again this year, so Council continues to explore other ways to fund recycling.

The City expects further diversion increases from the current 33% once a blue box service is implemented and as commercial compost collection service is expanded to businesses.

Remember that people grieve in different ways. After the funeral or memorial service can be a difficult time for a person who is grieving because they no longer have the immediate support and comfort of others. This can be a very good time to pay a visit, make a dinner date, or go for a walk. Simple acts of kindness go a long way.
