September 29, 2014 For immediate release Raven Recycling forced to change services Whitehorse - Raven Recycling Society announced today that it will be unable to offer the 24 hour free public drop off service to Whitehorse citizens after October 15, 2014 until further notice.

“We are sad to be making this announcement today and apologize to all our customers who faithfully bring their recycling to Raven,” says Jacqueline Bedard, President of the Raven Recycling Board of Directors. “Unfortunately, we cannot wait any longer for governments to build a solid funding framework to support the recycling of non-refundables.”

Non- refundables include cardboard, paper, plastics, styrofoam, milk cartons, tetrapaks and tin.

Diversion credits from the City of Whitehorse and Yukon Government cover less than ½ the cost of processing recyclables. The costs of recycling refundables are covered under the Beverage Container Regulations and make up about 10% of the total volume of materials that Raven currently processes.

“This decision was difficult to make but it is the right decision,” says Joy Snyder, Executive Director of Raven Recycling. “We have been providing reports, initiating meetings, responding to surveys and lobbying governments since 2008 when the commodities market crashed. We just can’t keep our drop-off open any longer without a stable source of funding that covers the costs of processing and shipping.”

Snyder adds: “The YG’s recent announcement on changes to the BCR is welcome and long overdue. Unfortunately for Raven, it is too little too late. Changes are not expected to be implemented for at least 12 months and we cannot hang on that long.”

Raven will continue to operate and collect materials that come with a stable funding source.

Those services include: PaperSave, Scrap metal, Re-Use store, Refund depot, Computers

for Schools, school tours and the Zero Waste education campaign. Services will also continue for community depots and businesses and government offices that currently pay for the service that Raven provides.

Snyder adds: “We hope the public will continue to bring us their beverage containers for a refund. We also ask citizens to contact Minister Brad Cathers and the Mayor Dan Curtis to express your support for Raven, and the services we provide. Raven hopes governments will come up with a solution so that we can reopen the public drop off as soon as possible.

Meadowlakes Golf Course leads the charge for a good cause!

Meadow Lakes raised nearly $10,000 for the ‘Make A Wish Foundation’ - enough to grant a wish to a local child through a golf tournament on September 6th. The main sponsor was Chamber member Air North, Yukon’s Airline!

Johnny Enns was the main coordinator, planning the event and recruiting sponsors and golfers. Geoff and Tania are the owners of the golf course who generously donated the course for the day.

Practice optimism Some people are born optimists, the rest of us need to learn how. Optimists are more likely to pursue goals, persist in the face of difficulty, cope more effectively and are happier.

The Best Possible Self exercise is a great way to learn and practice optimism. It goes like this: set aside 20 to 30 minutes on each of 4 days (more if you want!) and write about your "best possible future self" one, five or ten years from now.

Imagine that you have worked hard to achieve your best possible future, and describe what that would look like in key areas of your life: love, family, work, friends, hobbies, passions, etc.

This exercise can help you clarify your values, set goals and priorities and build confidence in your ability to reach them.

Seeing the "big picture" can help you get perspective on the day-to-day challenges and frustrations. And best of all, imagining your best possible self can help you see what you can do today to make that future a reality.
