Banks, credit card firms agree to cut fees charged to retailers More than $5B in fees charged annually at point of sale Canada's major banks and credit card companies have reached a deal with the federal government to cut the fees charged to merchants for credit transactions, sources familiar with the negotiations say.

The voluntary agreement could mean cost savings for up to 700,000 large, medium-sized and small businesses across the country. However, it remains to be seen whether the cuts will translate into savings for consumers.

Halloween -- trick or treat?

Halloween is here! The costumes are ready, the treats are bought. But you might find that the trickiest part of Halloween is dealing with all the candy that your child will bring home tonight.

Halloween is a good time to teach kids how to manage sweets without getting into big struggles about candy. Here are a couple of strategies that might work for you: •

On Halloween night and the day after, let your child eat as much candy as they want. After that, set up some structure and be consistent (e.g. 3 pieces of candy with dinner) so that your child is not grazing on candy any time of the day and night.

Offer to trade your child's Halloween candy for a book, toy, or trip to the pool.

Eating candy at the end of meals or drinking water with candy will help wash away the sugars and acids from teeth. Offer milk and healthy snacks such as vegetables, cheese or nuts with the candy for some good nutrition.

And don't forget about tooth-brushing and flossing. Kids need to learn that eating extra sweets means taking extra care of their teeth. Eat the sugar, but wear out the toothbrush too!
