We are very pleased to be in our third season of Des5na5on Imagina5on in Yukon and gaining momentum.

We are looking forward to our Tournament/Showcase this year on February 28.

Our program provides open-­‐ended challenges for youth from Grade 3 through Grade 12 to solve challenges in crea5ve and unique ways. Our program focusses on developing the 4 Cs (Crea5vity, Cri5cal Thinking, Collabora5on and Communica5on).

It is our hope that Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce members will join us as volunteers at our tournament on February 28. This is a fun day for students to showcase their solu5on in front of an audience of their peers, parents, and community. The tournament will run from about 9am to about 4pm. About a week prior, we will hold a 2-­‐hour training evening to brief volunteers on their assignment for the day.

We are also looking for business people to plan and/or host a fun ac5vity center for the day of the tournament. As an example; one of the sta5ons will be a Duct tape center where students make items out of Duct tape. Other crea5ve center ideas are welcome and encouraged! Hands on and fun are the key!

Regarding funding support; we are looking for funding to cover the cost of t-­‐shirts for the tournament. It would be great to have a sponsor company’s name or logo on each t-­‐shirt to make people aware of their support. We will have approximately 200 t-­‐shirts at $9 per shirt.

The City needs your input on a new city-wide curbside recycling collection program.

The following survey will take 5-10 minutes to complete. There is an opportunity to provide general comments and suggestions at the end of the survey. Results will be used to determine the future of recycling in Whitehorse.

The City is actively working towards a goal of 50% less waste by 2015. Historically recycling has been undertaken by residents either using a private collection service or dropping off the majority of recyclable materials at the two private recycling processors in Whitehorse: P&M Recycling and Raven Recycling. The system has been subsidized by a $75/tonne diversion credit provided by both the Yukon Government and the City of Whitehorse for non-BCR (Beverage Container Refundable) materials (e.g. beer cans and pop bottles). The total diversion credit is $150/tonne which is obtained from other solid waste program revenues.

Both recycling processors and a recent study indicate that the current diversion credits provide less than half of the true cost to process recycling in Whitehorse. Both processors may experience revenue shortfalls that are not sustainable over the long term. Maintaining the status quo may result in further reductions in recycling services in Whitehorse.

The need to stabilize the recycling system is critical to achieving both the City and Yukon Government’s waste reduction goals. A proposed residential user-pay recycling collection system will provide the revenue required to fund the actual costs of recycling materials generated by residents. Preliminary estimates indicate that the user-pay program for curbside residential recycling could cost approximately $15 per household per month. The figure below shows the estimated breakdown of costs, consisting of curbside collection, processing and transportation to end-markets in the south.

When we are trying to prevent relapse into an addictive behaviour that has strong cravings -- whether it's drinking, smoking, or drug use -- we often find ourselves in an internal battle. Do I give in? Can I stand my ground? When it comes to strong cravings, this internal struggle can actually strengthen and prolong it.

An alternative strategy is to surf the urge. Like waves, urges build, crest and gradually subside. Be mindful of how the urge changes in strength. Accept it for what it is rather than battling it to the ground. It's just an internal experience that you don't have to act on. It too shall pass. Be calm, curious and nonjudgemental until it's gone.

The urge will return at some point. But with time the urges will be less intense and less frequent, and you'll be well on your road to preventing a relapse.
