Canadian Chamber of Commerce Supports Northern Businesses

With the exception of those who live, work and invest in the territories, most Canadians are not aware of their potential—with their vast natural resources, breathtaking geography and young, fast growing Aboriginal population—to contribute to our economic edge and collective prosperity. Reducing the dependence of Canada’s territories on the federal government for financial transfers and jobs will improve our national competitiveness. With the right tools, business in the territories can make economic growth and increased independence from the federal government happen.

In 2014 and 2015, the lack of economic development tools for businesses in Canada’s territories was included in our Top 10 Barriers to Competitiveness.

Building upon work started in 2012, during 2014 and early 2015 we met with business people in the three territories to learn more about the tools they told us are critical to their success and to increasing their economic footprint. In this paper, we identify the key federal policy levers that give businesses the tools to grow and we offer recommendations on how to improve the environment for business in the territories.

This conference will address current issues, hot topics, and feature knowledgeable speakers and engaging discussion opportunities on doing business in Canada’s North. How does mining impact your life?

The process of mining – exploration, drilling, processing, grinding, shipping, etc. – often seems very far removed from our daily lives, and is thus easy to dismiss as unimportant. But is it really? Yukon Chamber of Mines will be using this space to shed light on how mining impacts our daily life. It might surprise you!

As many of you (willingly or unwillingly) spend your days at an office desk, today’s topic will revolve around a rather inconspicuous target – office supplies. If you stop to think about it, many tools that you use regularly have been created thanks to the global mining industry. Though there are many different types and colors of ink, most ink that is found in the generic ballpoint pen on your desk has components that are products of mining. Black ink, for example, gets its pigmentation from black carbon, a fine powder made from coal or oil sources. Blue ink often contains iron sulfate, which is a by-product of steel. The staples in your stapler are most commonly made from zinc-plated steel wires, and occasionally stainless steel. Zinc is a resource that has even been mined here in Yukon. Finally, calculators, who save many of us from embarrassment daily, are also a product of mining. The tiny little microchip that makes the calculator so smart is made out of silicon, which is one of the most abundant elements in the earth’s crust. The batteries that keep the calculator running is made up of a combination of zinc, steel, manganese and potassium. Mining impacts everyone – from school children, to office workers.

Office supplies are just one example of how integral mining is to our daily lives.

Feedback sought on proposed amendments to Yukon Oil and Gas legislation WHITEHORSE—The Yukon government is seeking feedback on a number of proposed amendments to Yukon’s Oil and Gas legislation.

“The goal of the proposed legislative revisions is to ensure Yukon remains able to attract and retain industry interest,” Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources Scott Kent said. “The changes will also strengthen the Yukon government’s ability to protect people and the environment, and improve transparency and clarity of information and processes.”

The Yukon government is consulting on amendments to the Yukon Oil and Gas Act that extend the term of a permit, improve the dispute resolution process for the negotiation of benefits agreements and clarify well abandonment requirements and procedures.

Yukoners are also invited to provide comments on proposed amendments to the Oil and Gas Disposition Regulations that include changes to the rent regime and to the work deposit refund process.

“This is part of the Yukon government’s commitment to modernize and streamline the regulatory processes for resource management,” Kent added. “These proposed changes will increase certainty for oil and gas exploration projects in Yukon’s frontier region by allowing for more flexibility, consistency and encouraging continued activity in Yukon.”

Yukon residents are encouraged to review a discussion document available online. Comments will be accepted until Monday, September 14. Paper copies of the discussion document can be provided on request.
