USELESS FACTS (Halloween edition)

* Placing a wreath on a grave is part of an ancient belief it was necessary to provide comforts for the dead and give them gifts in order for their spirits to not haunt the mourners. The circular arrangement represents a magic circle which is supposed to keep the spirit within its bounds. * To prevent evil spirits from entering the bodies of their male children, parents dressed them in blue. Blue was chosen because it's the color of the sky and was therefore associated with heavenly spirits. Girls weren't dressed in blue, apparently because people didn't think that evil spirits would bother with them.

*

According to folklore, there are a number of ways to protect yourself from vampires, including the ever-popular wearing of garlic. You can slow a vampire down by giving him something to do, like pick up poppy seeds or unravel a net. (They're quite compulsive.) Cross water and he can't follow. If you can find the body, give it a bottle of whiskey or food so it doesn't have to travel. If that doesn't work, either shoot the corpse (may require a silver bullet) or drive a stake through the heart. And remember, the vampire won't enter your dwelling unless invited.

HEALTH CENTRE NEWS

“WHY”?

WALK-IN SICK CLINIC:

Why do supermarkets make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front?

Monday to Friday 8:30 to 11:30 am 3:00 to 4:00 pm

PUBLIC HEALTH HOURS (Please make appointment) Monday to Friday 1:00 to 3:00 pm Only EMERGENCY needs will be seen after regular hours or on holidays. Call 994-4444 or 811

Why do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke? Why do banks leave vault doors open and then chain the pens to the counters? Why do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in our driveways and put our useless junk in the garage?

DOCTOR SERVICES:

EVER WONDER... Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin?

Call 994-4444 to book appointments.

Why can't women put on mascara with their mouth closed?

Dr. Bousquet – October 7th, 9th, 10th, 21st, 23rd, & 24th Please bring your Health Care Card. ***NOTE: People who have an appointment will be expected to bring ALL of their current medications with them when they see the doctor. When managing your medications, please renew your prescription in plenty of time so that you DO NOT RUN OUT!!!! Regulations have changed and only seeing a doctor will get your prescription renewed. It takes time because doctors’ clinics only happen every 2 weeks, are frequently fully booked, and takes 1 week to come from Whitehorse by mail.

WHITEHORSE PHARMACIES WHITEHORSE PHARMACIES

Pharmacies will send other items by mail, besides prescriptions. Medicine Chest Pharmacy 1-800-661-0404 Shoppers Drug Mart – Main St. 1-800-661-0506 Shoppers Drug Mart – Mall 1-800-661-0413 Wal-Mart Pharmacy 1-866-806-9056 Drugstore Pharmacy @ Superstore Non-Toll free 1-867-456-6635

Why don't you ever see the headline 'Psychic Wins Lottery'? Why is 'abbreviated' such a long word? Why is it that doctors and attorneys call what they do 'practice'? Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavoring, and dish washing liquid made with real lemons? Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker? Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour? Why isn't there mouse-flavored cat food? Why didn't Noah swat those two mosquitoes? Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections? You know that indestructible black box that is used on airplanes? Why don't they make the whole plane out of that stuff?? Why don't sheep shrink when it rains? Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together? If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal?

Friendship Feasts is a made in Faro program, it is not affiliated with Social Services, the Faro Health Centre, or any government program. If you are able to make a meal for a family once in a while, please get yourself on the Friendship Feast list. You may get called once in 6 months. To receive meals, you just need to nominate yourself or someone who you know needs meals. Generally, Friendship Feasts provides meals when there has been a death or other hardship in the family, when someone is recovering from an operation or sickness, or when a family brings home a new baby. Getting involved in Friendship Feasts is a great way to get involved in our community and to meet people in town in a meaningful way.

Friendship Feast Notice: Kara will be away during the month of October. If you are in need of meals, please contact Heather Grantham at 994-2006. And please remember- someone must call on your behalf or you can call to ask for meals. Our volunteers do not make meals unless we have been asked.

FARO RCMP DETACHMENT Happy October Faro!! The Terry Fox run was a big success, with the Faro youth representing very well! A few reminders from the Mounties as we head into the fall: It’s time for snow tires! Traditionally the first snow storm of the year is the busiest time for fender benders and car accidents, this year is no exception. Let’s try to get by this year without any regrets about not getting the snow tires on in time for that road trip out. Take the time to travel within the speed limit, as with the last few months we will be checking... With the cold weather sometimes we make poor decisions about driving when maybe we shouldn’t. If you’re planning to be out and have a few drinks, be sure to make arrangements for a drive or enjoy a brisk walk in the Yukon weather. The Yukon government has identified enforcement of impaired operation laws as a priority in our Territory. It would be a great winter for all of us if the Faro RCMP could report impaired driving is not a problem in Faro. Most importantly, our roads and trails will be safer for all of us to enjoy. Prepare for the cold weather by equipping your vehicle prior to making the trip to Whitehorse. Dress for the cold and be prepared for anything. After packing warm clothes, a sleeping bag and survival items the most important thing you can do is to plan to call someone when you arrive at your destination. Remember there is no cell phone service out there. If you don’t have a satellite phone a check in plan could save you a long wait for help on the highway. The Detachment Garden Gnome will be hiding out around town again this fall, please keep your eyes open for him and help one of our youngsters help with bringing him home for a reward. It will soon be Halloween. Let’s take a few extra steps to make sure our Halloween is as fun and safe as possible. Please replace those burnt out lights outside your houses. A little extra light goes a long way when trying to keep your property and guests safe as they approach your house. If you’re driving on Halloween night remember to watch for very excited little ones darting out from behind cars and other obstructions. Parents take a few minutes to establish a plan with your young trick or treaters... Knowing; Where are they going? Who will they be with? and When will they be home?.....should just about cover it. Also be sure your young ones know where to go along their route if they need help for any reason. Have a fun and safe Halloween!!! See you out there. Enjoy the fall!!! To contact Faro RCMP in an emergency, call 994-5555 or 1-867-667-5555. These calls will be answered by Whitehorse OCC who will have officers respond to the call. For general inquiries in the community, call 994-2677. If there is no answer, please phone 994-5555 and an officer will be contacted. Faro Detachment would like to remind members of the community about our Emergency Phone located at the front entrance to the Detachment. This phone line is connected directly to Whitehorse RCMP dispatch. The caller only has to hold the phone to their ear and someone from Whitehorse Dispatch will answer. This will ensure a quicker response from Faro RCMP members.

Department of Environment The 2014 fall Hunting Season seems to be going quite well in the Faro District. Winter is fast approaching, and we are all getting settled in for the cold months ahead. Reminder! Moose and Caribou: November 15th is the deadline for kill reports for licenced hunters who harvested a moose or caribou in October. Wood Bison, Sheep, Goats, Grizzly or Black Bears, and Wolves: Compulsory submissions for anyone who harvested wood bison, sheep, goats, grizzly or black bears, and wolves are due no later than 15 days after the end of the month in which the animal was killed. Deer and Elk: Deer and elk hides, and elk heads, must be submitted to an Environment Yukon office within 72 hours of the kill. The deer incisor bar and the antlers – with all or part of the skull attached – must be brought in within 15 days after the month in which the deer was killed. Detailed information about compulsory submissions, biological samples and kill reports is available in the 2014-2015 Yukon Hunting Regulations Summary available where hunting licences are sold and on the Environment Yukon website. Your harvest information is important and helps future wildlife management decisions. For those of you who have had a successful hunt, please be sure to care and store your meat properly as to not waste any or attract bears or other wildlife. We would like to remind all people of the importance of reporting violations they may witness during the hunting season, or at any time of year for that matter. To report violations, visit a Conservation Officer or call our office at 994-2862. If someone wishes to remain anonymous, they may do so by phoning the Turn-In-Poachers toll free hotline at 1-800-661-0525, available 24 hours a day.

Good luck with the wood gathering and we wish everyone a great winter ahead! Stay Warm! TJ & Leithe
