from the editor As we enter a new year (and a new decade), it’s only natural to reflect; 2019 not only marked 50 years of Swansea as a city, but awarded those businesses which go above and beyond to make our city special (page 33).

Following my mantra #dontbeasheep, I’m proud that Shrek the Musical has graced our cover - the story of one hulking green ogre’s quest to find his tribe, literally and metaphorically, (page 18).

Porthcawl Christmas Swim

Wed 25 December | registration 10.30am Join the 55th pre-turkey tradition of a festive dip this Christmas Day. The Porthcawl Christmas Swim is an annual event which sees participants entering the sea for fun, and, in lots of cases, to raise money for local charities.

This event has become the community get-together in south Wales. Around 1,200 people will don their skimpy swimwear for a crisp dip, to the applause of a bountiful crowd of spectators. Fancy dress is optional but encouraged for the entertainment factor; this year’s theme is Memory Lane. Plus, all swimmers get a free commemorative mug.

Nothing will set you up for a tummy full of sprouts better than a trip to the seaside!

Fri 14 February | 10am - 2pm It’s the day to fall in love… with your new job. The Swansea Careers Fair will offer candidates from all backgrounds, experience and education levels the opportunity to speak to an abundance of local employers, all in one place.

There will be a wide variety of different organisations attending, alongside a wide variety of roles being offered. Online applications can be very time consuming - by attending, you get to skip this process and speak to potential employers face-to-face.

Network, ask questions and leave a long-lasting impression with recruiters and organisations, because who you know can get you further.

t our open evenings, you can find out more about our courses, chat with teaching and support staff and have a look around our facilities.

We offer almost 40 A Level subjects (many of which are not offered at GCSE) and 40 vocational subject choices, so whatever your interest, we will have a suitable course for you.

In 2019, our A Level results significantly outperformed the Welsh national average by 8% at A*-A grades (our overall pass rate was 99%).

If you prefer the coursework elements of GCSEs rather than exams, then a Vocational Course such as BTEC would be a good choice for you. There are many levels to each course so you can slot into the one that best matches your qualifications. In 2019, we celebrated an overall 100% pass rate at Level 3 (17% at Highest Triple Distinction).

Want to earn as you learn? Apprenticeships are a great way to earn a wage and work alongside

experienced staff to gain job-specific skills.

In 2019, over 1,000 of our students progressed to university, and of these, 200 were accepted at some of the best universities in the UK including Oxford, Cambridge and other Russell Group institutions.

“The College’s HE+ programme ensured I was in a position to make a competitive application to the UK’s top universities; when it came to applying for Oxford I felt well-prepared and confident thanks to the College’s support,” said student Georgia Charles.

Many other students progressed straight into employment or an apprenticeship or stayed at the College to study one of our Higher Education courses.

assailing, meaning to be whole or good health, is a medieval drinking ritual dating back to the eight century. Gower Heritage Centre will be celebrating with live music and entertainment along with the Mari Lwyd, south Wales’ wassailing tradition involving a horse’s skull.

The ancient festival involves singing, dancing and merriment along with hanging cider-soaked toast from apple trees and generally making lots of noise to wake up the sleeping orchard to ensure a good apple harvest for the coming year.

Over the weekend, there will be wassail (hot mulled cider) or hot apple juice, toasted marshmallows, apple cakes and hog roast. There will also be mummers, dancing from Sweyn’s Ey Morris Dancers, drummers, and live music from: top Welsh folk band The Brwmys; Tommy Jenkins; Andy Tamlyn Jones; Richard Bold William; No Obligation; Celtic Guitar; Welsh Fiddle Champion Jamie Nemeth; Gwyr Y Stac; Jim Rees; Andrew McKay & Carole Etherton.

Tell me about Harry’s Youth Theatre…

Well, our theatre group is self-funded and not-forprofit. It was set up 17 years ago by Louise Doyle, but now it’s run by Sharon Roberts alongside a team of volunteers, Harry’s Angels. I form part of the creative team alongside our musical director, Jonathan Lycett and choreographer Helen Stevens. We have around 120 students ranging from ages three to 19.

What gives you the most satisfaction about heading the creative team?

It’s exciting to be able to direct a large variety of shows.

We’ve done everything from Our House, Wizard of Oz, Billy Elliot to Disney classics. However, nurturing our students is the most fulfilling. We end up becoming one big family and it’s great for students that are looking for a sense of belonging to find a new hobby and make friends for life.

How can new students join?

Our philosophy is all about inclusivity. We don’t hold auditions to join Harry's Youth Theatre as we want to give all students an opportunity. We are a musical theatre-based group, so we cover all aspects of acting, singing and dance. We’ll be taking on new students after Shrek. We rehearse every Mon at our permanent residency in the Swansea Grand Theatre: minis 5pm6pm, juniors 5pm-7pm and seniors 7pm-9pm. How do you deal with the daunting task of taking on such a well-loved musical?

It’s very much a team effort. We start with the script, which is the original script from the West End residency (2011-2013), then we discuss the scenery and costumes. We make all of our costumes in-house - Sharon heads that task, it’s a mammoth job. This

production is a big undertaking - Shrek’s prosthetics take an hour to apply!

How do the film and musical interweave?

The story is the same - you’ve still got the wellloved classics such as I’m a Believer in the finale. Avid fans of the film will be able to sing along - it’s a great show for all the family.

For those who don’t know, give me a brief synopsis of the musical?

It's the story of a hulking green ogre named Shrek and his journey to fit in after being mocked and feared his entire life. Suddenly, the evil Lord Farquaad banishes a bunch of fairy tale creatures to Shrek's swamp (Pinocchio, Cinderella, the Three Little Pigs). Shrek must go on a quest to save Princess Fiona, along with a fasttalking donkey (literally named Donkey) in order to get his swamp back.

What’s your favourite quote from Shrek?

What makes us special, makes us strong.

Are there any surprises in store for the audience?

I don’t want to give too much away, but the dragon at the end of act one is a spectacle. The staging and costumes are wonderful - it’s a fun, bouncy, feel-good show.

What’s the highlight of the show for you?

As director and choreographer of the ensembles, seeing everyone performing together on stage is such a reflective and proud moment for me.

What production will you be working on next? Well I can’t reveal that yet, but we do two performances a year, so after Shrek we’ll be taking on new students for our next production. 

f you haven’t made it to see Peter Pan yet, there’s still time to jump aboard the Jolly Roger and hook up with Tristan Gemmill (Corrie’s Robert Preston) who is playing the eponymous villain and his crew, Mrs Smee (Kev Johns) and Starkey (BGT’s Ricky K) who are far from shipshape. Peter Pan runs until 12 January at Swansea Grand Theatre, so there’s still plenty of time to snap up your ticket.

Call me old-fashioned (or bonkers), but I think Fawlty Towers is comedy gold. So when I saw the Fawlty Towers Live Themed Dining Show was coming to Swansea Grand Theatre, I jumped to get a ticket quicker than Manuel’s flying bread rolls.

I

was ever so excited but didn’t know what to expect - how would Fawdinex, the show’s producer, integrate theatre and dining?

It was my first experience of immersive theatre being amongst the action and actors added a new edge-of-your-seat excitement.

The evening began in The Malthouse, the theatre’s new on-trend bar run by Swansea’s well-loved Gower Brewery.

The atmosphere was cheery and warm as we waited in anticipation for theatrical mayhem like nothing else.

My friend and I are chatting at the bar as we’re served amuse-bouches when we hear a shriek - Basil (played

by Stephen Lurvey) is calling us for dinner in no less than his dinner jacket and boxers!

Manuel (Ben Perl) scuttles in after, his face panicstricken, shouting “si, si, si” as we’re guided to our dining room for the evening, the majestic Swansea Grand Theatre stage. Being sat on stage, viewing the theatre from the actor’s point of view was unexpected and added to the mystery.

A hum of nattering builds slowly and bellies rumble. “Good evening,” bellows Basil as he bounces in from the wings. He talks, well shouts, to some of the guests quoting lines from the original 12-part TV comedy series. “You ponce in here expecting to be waited on hand and foot, while I’m trying to run a hotel here. Have you any idea how much there is to do!”

As our starters were served, Sybil (Alice Offley) strolls on stage with poise and grace. The actors were

superbly cast - it was almost as if the original cast members were on stage.

Whilst we were devouring our mains, we hear screams and the clatter of cutlery as Manuel appears from under one of the dining tables - there must have been a trap door!

Other personal highlights included the impromptu moment Basil has a witty conversation with my friend’s dad on the phone, the classic ‘Don’t mention the war’ scene, and the iconic ‘Hammer’ scene which saw Basil and Manuel running around the theatre.

May I add that the food was superb, which was the general consensus from guests on the night. Prepared

by Gower Brewery’s catering team, the quality and flavours were on point. For £49 a ticket, which included a delicious three-course meal and immersive dining experience, you can’t go wrong.

The cast left us to enjoy our desserts in peace after inviting us to join them for a few beverages (and selfies) in the bar afterwards. If this show should head our way again, I would highly recommend getting a ticket. And from the number of people who commented on the photos taken from the night, it’s likely to be a sell-out.

Formed in 1959, today the society has around 40 professional artist members, living and working throughout Wales, with very diverse approaches to the art of watercolour painting. As such, its exhibitions are always varied, thought provoking and colourful, and generally explore the beauty of the landscape of Wales, its culture, people and heritage.

The RWSW strives to attract young, talented watercolour artists to its ranks and helps develop those artists to maintain the balance of tradition and new approaches.

In 2013, the RWSW was honored to receive the Royal Charter with HRH The Prince of Wales, who regularly exhibits with the Society, as its patron.

radioactive boglach Holly Hughes chats to artist Aimee Lax about her upcoming exhibition which expresses how human activity is effecting our planet and what lies beneath.

What was the inspiration behind the exhibition?

In 2017, I took part in a residency at Cove Park, Scotland.

It is a beautiful serene place overlooking Loch Long. It is abundant in wildflowers, lichen, rich peaty brown soil, butterwort, ferns and foxgloves. But literally lurking around the corner, buried deep in the hillside, is where we store our nation’s warheads. So, I started a fictional field study, a ‘what if’ scenario. What if some of the radiation should leak into the surrounding ecosystem after hundreds of years, what sort of organisms might result?

What first peaked your interest about microbiology?

I am in awe of some of the creatures we cannot see with the naked eye. Microorganisms are vital to our health, within and out of our bodies. They play a crucial role in ecosystems; we have to be very careful of upsetting the balance when using antibiotics. Antibiotics are marvellous and have saved many millions of lives but we are becoming resistant to them. We need to look to alternatives such as bacteriophage therapy.

Your work is a visual interpretation of current science and ecological issues. Tell me more… The debates about energy consumption are crucial and the aims to cut carbon emissions are indeed vital for the health of the planet. Unfortunately, this isn’t enough. We need to understand that the planet is a living organism, a complicated mass of millions of systems that depend on each other and effect each other. Everything we do has

a knock-on effect elsewhere, despite our efforts to make a better change. The mining of lithium for example, to make big enough batteries for us all to drive electric cars, will impact on our environment as will the installation of these batteries. Let alone the question of the energy source to make enough electricity in the first place.

What techniques and methods do you use to create your sculptures? I use all traditional ceramic methods in my making: modelling, mould-making and slip-casting, throwing, coiling and hand-building. Where I use other materials, I often consult technicians/makers who know a lot more about that material, for example in metalwork or acrylic glass construction. Otherwise the use of another material made by myself can be more useful in highlighting the specialness of clay, especially porcelain.

What is it about ceramics that attracted you? Clay is an exceptionally malleable material and it is all around us. More specifically, porcelain is recognised as a special medium for us; we are aware of its strength and fragility, it is hugely symbolic and evocative when talking about nature.

Your sculptures are ahead of the curve; what can audiences expect in terms of a visual spectacle?

Unusual textures and shapes and touches of neon colour - they will see creatures that they feel are recognisable but alien, attractive but unsettling. It’s these dichotomies I find powerful.

What reaction do you hope to provoke from the audience? I hope the audience will feel inspired to know more about these pressing themes. Perhaps they will be interested enough to follow me to see what new works result from my current residency at the V&A and maybe they will be able to visit me during Open Studios in the museum at some point next year, I will be there until mid July 2020.  Free entry | Sat 25 January - Sat 21 March | Mission Gallery, Gloucester Place, Swansea SA1 1TY

A Welsh dragon made by 18-year-old James Owen Thomas from discarded lottery scratchcards is just one of the unique artworks on show in this exhibition. Due to his autism, James prefers to communicate through imagery and developed his artwork into a way to express himself. All of James' art is created from recycled scratchcards, which would otherwise be thrown away, and serves to highlight environmental issues as well as to express himself using materials deemed worthless to others.

On the 180th anniversary of the Rebecca Riots, Welsh artist John Abell has created a new exhibition commissioned as a response to the 2019 National Trust People’s Landscape theme. The exhibition presents a series of new paintings, linocuts and etchings. Abell’s body of work examines the daily life, beliefs and camaraderie of the Rioters as they rose up in protest against the Turnpike Trusts and the introduction of road tolls in rural Pembrokeshire, Cardiganshire and Carmarthenshire.

Established in 2006, the bi-annual Swansea Bay Tourism Awards celebrate tourism, leisure and hospitality’s key players, influencers and newcomers, and are organised in partnership with Tourism Swansea Bay and Swansea Council.

W

hile your summer wardrobe might be brimming with sundresses, breezy blouses and sandals, the winter version takes the more sensible route of cashmere, rainproof outerwear and leather boots.

But why should your favourite summer pieces be relegated to storage without being given a proper chance to contribute to your winter outfits?

I’m crusading to keep our summer and winter wardrobes in rotation, so I’ve put together some handy ideas that will help transform your summer wardrobe into a winter-friendly one, with just the addition of a few solid investments.

layering Layers are key for transitioning your wardrobe and the combinations are endless. Layering is easy and can be done with almost any article of clothing.

Wear a lightweight fitted top (longer than the layer that you’re putting over it) and add a sweater and a scarf. If the layers are lightweight, add a blazer or denim jacket to your outfit. Keep the underlayers more fitted and use a belt for an hourglass silhouette.

texture Play with texture; it’s best to incorporate a mixture of materials when styling a layered look. Avoid using the same fabrics as your look will be heavy and dowdy, which can add the appearance of unwanted weight as well.

styling suggestions 1 Wearing a skirt over trousers will edge up your outfit while creating an interesting silhouette.

2 Chunky knit over a shirt - add a crisp collar to amp up a neutral crewneck sweater or provide an unexpected backdrop to a simple shift dress.

Go nuts and mix prints with a graphic sweatshirt, sweater, or cardigan. Prints are the new black!

3 Turn a summer dress into a winter staple by adding a cute sweatshirt on top; team with biker boots to be bang on trend.

4 Try a turtleneck under a shift dress. A fitted black turtleneck will be your best friend through the bitterly cold season. You could stack a sweater and coat over it, layer it under a cute dress, or try it solo and tucked into a maxi skirt for a formal occasion.

5 Pair a skirt with a chunky cropped sweater, delicate knit cardigan, boxy blazer, tailored blouse, or even a crop top.

6 A long-sleeved top under overalls and jumpsuits make them more practical in winter.

7 Invest in a great pair of opaque tights to wear under shorts.

8 Add boots and a jacket to your favourite summer maxi skirt.

The pharmacist will see you now

Got a really sore throat? Think you need a prescription? Before ringing for a GP appointment, check out the 22 pharmacists in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot that can now issue antibiotics for sore throats caused by a bacterial infection.

T

he pharmacies (listed opposite) are offering an as-you-wait swab test which determines immediately if your sore throat is caused by a strep infection. If it is, they can give you antibiotics there and then. If it’s not, antibiotics won’t help, and you’ll be offered paracetamol or ibuprofen instead.

The 22 pharmacies are the first in the Swansea Bay University Health Board area to offer the new service, and more will be coming on board in the following months. The service is free and no appointment is necessary.

The pharmacists have had extra training to offer the new service, which is designed to make it easier for people to get quick and effective care for a common, but very uncomfortable condition.

And another important benefit is that it prevents antibiotics being prescribed unnecessarily. GPs don’t have access to instant testing, so traditionally have prescribed antibiotics based on symptoms alone, rather than checking the type of bug causing it.

This has meant sore throats caused by viruses, rather than bacteria, have been inappropriately treated with antibiotics. Not only is this pointless - as antibiotics don’t work against viruses - but it increases the serious worldwide problem of antibiotic resistance, where overuse of antibiotics means more and more are losing the ability to fight infections.

Taking antibiotics you don’t need isn’t good for you generally either, as they can lead to upset stomachs because the healthy flora in your gut is affected by them.

The new service, called the Community Pharmacy Sore Throat Test and Treat service (STTT), is expected to benefit thousands of patients a year across Swansea and Neath Port Talbot. It follows successful pilots in two other health board areas in Wales (Betsi Cadwaladr and Cwm Taf UHBs).

people to come see us within the first 48 to 72 hours of symptoms.

“The whole consultation process only takes 10 minutes or so, and that includes us asking questions, carrying out a swab test if needed and giving advice on how to treat the sore throat, including medication if required.

“Patients don’t have to take medication, but if they decide to, we can either prescribe an antibiotic - just like a GP would - or suggest other remedies that are available in the pharmacy.”

Across Wales, sore throats account for about 180,000 GP consultations each year. Most are down to viruses, and get better on their own.

The pharmacists are trained to pick up more serious infections too, and can refer patients to GPs if necessary. Patient response in the Cwm Taf trial area has been very positive, with 99% of the 310 patients who provided feedback saying they would choose to use their pharmacy over their GP surgery if they had a sore throat again.

The new walk-in STTT service is available to people over the age of six, who are living in Wales and are listed with a Welsh GP. Your GP will be advised within 24 hours of using the service so your medical record is kept up to date. 

This January sees the return of Veganuary, the yearly challenge to go vegan for the month, so we asked author of The Occasional Vegan, Sarah Philpott, to explain all things vegan.

I

t was once the butt of jokes, but nowadays veganism is pretty mainstream, and with an estimated 3.5 million vegans and vegetarians in the UK, is it time to ditch the meat and dairy?

extinction. Half of the world’s edible grain crop is fed to farm animals, so when you consider that one acre of land can produce 250 pounds of beef compared to 53,000 pounds of potatoes, you’ll see how wasteful meat and dairy farming can be.

Why I went vegan…

I went vegan in 2015. It was a tumultuous year for me - I’d recently turned thirty, was newly single, and wanted a change. Initially, it was for health reasons (there wasn’t much in the way of vegan junk food in those days), but I soon realised how terribly animals are treated, and that has remained my reason to keep going.

Is it healthier to be vegan?

As well as being kinder to animals and the planet, a vegan diet can also be good for your body, including your skin, digestion and energy levels. But even though it can be healthy, remember that veganism is not a ‘diet’, nor is it about ‘clean eating’. Not all vegans have Insta-bodies and only eat kale and avocado, and it’s possible to eat nothing but vegan junk food, although you might not feel too good for it!

Where should I go shopping?

You’ll find everything you need at the supermarket, greengrocers or market, and you can also visit some of Swansea’s independent shops. Head to Swansea Market to find Brontosaurus, the city’s only 100% vegan shop, where you can buy cheese, chocolate, toiletries and cosmetics. For fruit and veg, I like The Choice is Yours at Swansea Market, which also has two shops in Mumbles, and I’ve just discovered Root Zero, a zero waste shop at Swansea University's Students’ Union in Fulton House, which is also open to the public.

How do I get the right nutrients?

What about eating out?

You should be able to get all the nutrients you need by eating a wide range of fruits and vegetables and plenty of pulses, grains, nuts and seeds. Make sure that you get enough protein (although you don’t need as much you think), and iron; don’t cut the carbs and take a vitamin B12 supplement. It’s all about balance, so try eating healthily most of the time but allow for the odd treat.

Vegans are spoiled for choice in Swansea. My favourite places for a bite to eat are Bluebell (the vegan Yorkshire puds are divine), The Kitchen Table, Square Peg and Arthur Neave. I also love Hoogah for delicious vegan pizzas, Gigi Gao’s for Chinese food, Copperfish for battered tofu and chips, and Calaca for a mean Mexican. For a special occasion, I like The Swigg, and if you’re after comfort food, go to Ezy Vegan or Canteen 18. Yogāya (formerly Govinda’s) is great for breakfast and lunch, and if you’re on the go, you must visit The Falafel Stall at Swansea Market. 

Is it kinder to the environment?

Raising animals for food is the largest source of greenhouse gases, and the use and degradation of land. It’s the number one source of water pollution and rainforest deforestation and it’s also a major contributor to air pollution, habitat loss and species

ere, Sarah shares a taster from her soon-tobe-released cookbook. The recipe for this vegan Keralan cauliflower and pineapple curry will appeal to all. Slightly spicy and with a great depth of flavour, this is the perfect nutritious meal for a winter’s evening.

keralan cauliflower and pineapple curry (35 minutes) Serves 3-4 ingredients

 1 tsp coconut oil  1 large cauliflower, cut into florets and leaves reserved  3-4 curry leaves  1 x 400ml can full-fat coconut milk  1 x 400g can chickpeas, rinsed and drained  200g spinach  1 medium pineapple, peeled and cut into small chunks  1 lime (juice only)

for the curry paste  1 small onion, peeled and diced  2 inches fresh ginger, peeled  1 red chilli, deseeded and roughly sliced  1 clove garlic, peeled  1 lime (juice)  1 tsp mustard seeds  1 tsp ground cinnamon  1 tsp ground turmeric  1 tsp ground fenugreek  1 tsp coriander seed  1 tbsp brown sugar  a pinch of sea salt  a little water

method 1 In a large pan, heat the coconut oil over a medium heat. Fry the cauliflower florets and leaves with the curry leaves for 10-15 minutes.

2 Meanwhile, place all the curry paste ingredients into a bowl and blitz using a handheld blender (alternatively, you can blitz them in a food processor).

3 Add the coconut milk and curry paste to the pan and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and add the chickpeas. Simmer for five minutes then add the spinach and pineapple. Cook for another two to three minutes, then turn off the heat and stir through the lime juice. Serve with rice. 

With Burn’s Night on Sat 25 January, Katie Davies, quarter finalist of BBC One’s Britain’s Best Home Cook shares her recipe for Cullen skink, a traditional thick Scottish soup made of smoked haddock, potatoes and onions. ingredients

method

 500ml skimmed milk  fresh parsley  1 bay leaf  350g smoked haddock fillet  knob of butter  1 onion, finely diced  250g cold mashed potato  seasoning

1 Pour the milk into a large frying pan with the stalks from the parsley, bay leaf and a few peppercorns, and add the haddock.

2 Bring the milk to a gentle boil and cook for three to four minutes; remove the pan from the heat and leave for five minutes for the herbs to infuse their flavour into the milk.

3 Gently remove the haddock from the milk, flake with your hand, checking for bones, and leave to one side. Strain the liquid through a fine sieve and reserve the milk.

4 Heat the butter in another saucepan, add the onions and cook until softened.

5 Add the milk to the onions, then add the potato.

Use a balloon whisk to stir until the potato has been incorporated into the milk. It should be a thick, creamy consistency. Add a splash of double cream and season to taste; stir through the fish gently and leave on the heat for a few more minutes.

6 Finely chop the parsley leaves and stir through the soup.

7 I serve the soup hot, garnished with more parsley and a boiled egg (I use a quail’s egg). 

Sharing tasty morsels from Swansea's dining scene ḧoogah

Last year I was on holiday in Norway. I saw fantastic fjords, snow-topped mountains and met friendly people. When I came back to Swansea I got the post-holiday blues. Or so I thought.

Who'd have thought there's a Scandinavian café in town called Ḧoogah? The name Ḧoogah is a spin on the Danish word, hygge, a concept about cosiness and pleasant atmospheres.

I arrived and was greeted with smiles by the host.

“What would you suggest to eat for a newbie like me?” I asked. “Well, if you like spicy food, you should have the Cubano pretzel! It has pork belly, spicy mayo, fresh pickle, smoked cheese and pork crackling.” I could not resist.

As I waited, I looked at the interior. It felt Scandinavian with its wooden floors. The lighting.

The plants. It was like I never left Oslo. The place was overflowing with positive feel-good vibes. When the plate arrived I was in awe. It was bright. It was colourful.

The textures. The taste. Each ingredient was there for a purpose. It was stunning. With coffees and cakes and sourdough pizzas too, there’s something for everyone.

I left Ḧoogah feeling peaceful and ready to take on the next adventure. DANIEL MARTIN

I am happy to report there’s a banging new vegan foodie hangout in the city centre (plus dedicated upstairs yoga room). Followers of well-loved Govinda’s will have noticed the premises now has a new lease of life and a new name, Yogâya.

As I stepped inside the new age eatery, I was greeted with the mellow fragrance of coconut and spices and overcome by a sense of calmness (there was a chilled playlist on in the background).

The staff, who were not briefed before I visited, were extremely helpful in talking me though the menu. The most popular option is thalis (Indian for round platter), which comprises a medley of fragrant curries that are updated daily, creamy dal, rice, sweet/spicy chutney, pakora and poori. The medium thali I opted for also came with halava, a palate cleansing sweet coconut and mango dessert spiced with cardamon. At £7.50 for the medium thali, you simply can’t go wrong for the quality and plentiful portion!

Other mains on offer included home-made seitan, a wheat-derived meat alternative with mushrooms in a black bean sauce. Plus, their range of vegan cakes are the perfect balance of naughty but nice. Keep note, as they’re soon to be opening for dinner. HOLLY HUGHES 
