Thu 2 May | 7.30pm Swansea Pride is hosting the UK’s first same-sex ballroom dance event. Jermin Productions has cast a variety of diverse and different dance partners to take part in the first same-sex, Strictly-inspired dance contest.

Each pair will be introduced to local dance teachers and undergo six weeks of training. Like the BBC-inspired show, the Swansea contestants are all amateurs who have never danced before.

Two stages will provide a variety of entertainment including: live music, singers, performers, comedians, guest presenters, drag artists, acts, LGBT+ pop-up entertainment and face painting, which will take place alongside the existing Street Food Festival.

Tŷ Hafan, the children’s hospice in Wales, is launching its first ever Character Chase, which will see fundraising families mixing and interacting with their favourite characters from storybooks, TV shows and films.

T

he Character Chase will take place on Saturday 27 April in Singleton Park, Swansea.

In this fundraising fun run with a twist, children and adults take on either a 100m dash or a 5km fun run and all along the way, they’ll meet TV mascots, winter princesses, heroes and villains and a whole host of spectacular characters. Runners will be able to spin a web with Spidey, pirouette with the princesses, hiss at the villains and high five their heroes as they make their way to the finish.

Once they’ve completed their course, participants can make their way to the finish that ends happily ever after; collect their medals, pose for photos with their favourite characters and soak up the atmosphere in Tŷ Hafan’s event village.

“Tŷ Hafan is a place where memories are created and

cherished. It’s about joy, laughter and friendship, so we think that this brand new Character Chase will help people create happy memories and have great fun,” said Jodie Harris, Events Manager at Tŷ Hafan.

Participants - who can be in fancy dress if they like - can choose between the 100m dash for under 5s and the 5 kilometre fun run which is open to anyone aged over five.

In addition to the small registration fee, Tŷ Hafan is asking participants to set themselves a target of £15 sponsorship for the 100 metre run and £50 for the 5k run (£20 for under 16s), although the charity is stressing that any amount would be warmly welcomed. 

Learn about the different branches of the Naval Reserve, enjoy an introduction to fire-fighting and hone your skills with some challenging rope-handling techniques.

If you love science, this is a not-to-bemissed event suitable for the entire family. Swansea University’s Oriel Science returns to host Super Science Sunday at the National Waterfront Museum, which takes place during British Science Week, 8-17 March.

Visitors of all ages will see a huge range of interactive science exhibits, from animals and insects to black holes and astronauts.

Spend the day exploring Swansea University’s exciting current research with hands-on learning. There will also be talks from special guests throughout the day.

Drop in anytime and experience the gallery after hours plus a range of art and craft workshops, films, poetry, live music and performance, with food, drink and a licensed bar available from the café.

Artist Fiona Banner will be talking about her work and practice, and some of her works and films will be on display around the gallery.

The Glynn Vivian learning team will also be doing seasonal workshops inspired by the current exhibitions programme (Phytopia, CASW and Dylan Thomas: Music of Colour). 

A two-day festival of music, food and entertainment celebrating St. David’s Day. The streets will be lined with an aroma of delicious homemade produce as marquees selling local produce and cookery demonstrations are displayed along Oxford Street and at Castle Square for the two days. The show promises to be fresh and innovative with amazing routines and costumes to dazzle you. There will be an exciting mix of individual performances and group numbers with their supporting dance partners.

Here, the ladies share their lives before and as part of BBC’s hit TV show Strictly Come Dancing.

Q

How did your dancing career start?

Dianne: I began dancing at the age of five in Perth, Australia. I went on to compete from an early age, representing western Australia in national and international ballroom and Latin events. I found success on the Australian TV show So You Think You Can Dance at the age of 18.

Amy: I started dancing at the age of eight at my local dance school Shappelles in Caerphilly along with my twin sister. I soon joined the school’s formation team and immediately fell in love with the world of dance. I studied ballroom, Latin, freestyle, ballet and contemporary, but my dream was to be a top competitor on the open Latin and ballroom competition circuit.

Chloe: My dance training began at the tender age of seven when I joined Pritchards Dance and Fitness Academy in Burleydam. I went on to win many dance titles, but my proudest achievement was

When did you join Strictly Come Dancing?

Dianne: I joined in 2017 as Strictly’s new professional dancer.

My first celebrity partner was Reverend Richard Coles who I sadly bowed out of the 2017 competition with during week three.

Q

Which celebrity dance partner has made you laugh the most?

Dianne: I’d say Joe because I was with him the longest, but for the short amount of time I danced with the Reverend Richard Cole, he made me laugh a lot, so I’d have to say these two made me laugh equally.

Q

How does it make you feel being Strictly’s first Welsh professional dancer?

Amy: I was invited to become one of the professional dancers in 2017, partnering comedian Brian Conley. In this first year on the show, I won the Children in Need Strictly Special with Mark Curry and danced in the Christmas special with Colin Jackson.

Chloe: In 2016 I joined the cast becoming the youngest ever professional to join the show at the age of 20 years old. My Strictly career has seen me dance in the 2016 Christmas special with Gethin Jones and partnering the incredible Blue Peter presenter Radzi Chinyinganya for the 2017 Children in Need show.

Amy: Incredibly proud. I’ve always been proud of my Welsh roots. I’m looking forward to performing to a Swansea audience.

Q

Do you get nervous before you go on stage?

Chloe: I think it’s very natural to feel nervous due to all the adrenaline, but I feel more excited than anxious. Competing makes me more nervous than performing but I try to channel the nerves into excitement instead of running and hiding. 

ery rarely does one associate Russia with humour, but Russian playwright Nikolai Gogol makes an exception with his play, The Government Inspector.

Swansea Little Theatre stages The Government Inspector at the Dylan Thomas Theatre which promises to be a colourful night of laughter. The play, which was the basis of the film The Inspector General starring the legendary Danny Kaye, has been translated many times over the years, but this production is of the Alistair Beaton translation, staged at the Chichester Festival Theatre starring television actor and personality Alistair McGowan.

This hilariously funny play written in 1836, tackles a subject with which we are more familiar today - corruption in local government!

As with many great plays, The Government Inspector can be more than one interpretation. It is an enduring classic precisely because it refuses to be labeled. 

Sat 9 March - Sun 28 April The Warrior Face project is a poignant and moving exhibition that focuses on the strength, determination and resilience of young people in care, care leavers and carers from across Wales.

Organised by The Roots Foundation Wales and supported

by Photoprolab Cardiff, the project explores the warrior that is in all of us, creating a series of powerful portraits taken by renowned photographer Richie Crossley of Chic Production, Swansea.

The interpretation of warriors varied from one individual to another, taking inspiration from different cultures, groups and characters and their roles and characteristics.

Viewers will be able to identify certain defined preconceptions of warriors as they browse the exhibition; however, they will also notice that a number of images have deeper levels of meanings.

The Roots Foundation Wales offers support to individuals and groups of young people and carers and provides activities and workshops that promote independent living skills and better life choices. It has a designated high-level intervention project that

supports care-experienced young people who have been the victims, or are at risk of becoming victims.

Until Sun 31 March Glynn Vivian's collection of Welsh porcelain has been the starting point of artist Andreas Rüthi's paintings that celebrate and explore both the hallucinogenic power of colour, and new possibilities held within the tradition of painting, such as playing with the nature of reproduction, imitation, representation and scale.

After training and working as a teacher in his native Switzerland, Andreas Rüthi studied Fine Art in London and Amsterdam. He worked in London for several years in publishing as a translator and art director. Brenda is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and is highly regarded in the field of collagraph printmaking, having contributed to a number of publications on the subject.

Sheridan Ward, based in Penarth, Cardiff, is a young impressionist painter who grew up and studied in Norfork. Her innovative painting techniques produce atmospheric and dramatic scenes conveying beauty through light, shade, texture and form and creating an evocative sense of place and mood.

s the nation prepares to take a leap into the unknown with Brexit, Volcano Theatre presents a week-long festival of contemporary small-scale work that celebrates our cultural connections with Europe, Fri 22 - Sat 30 March.

The eclectic festival serves as an antidote to these toxic political times and will include film, dance, music, spoken-word performances and theatre from Volcano Theatre’s youth group and old friends of the theatre such as Espai_F from Formentera.

Volcano Theatre is looking for eclectic performances, exhibitions/ installations, gigs/concerts, talks and presentations in English, Welsh or other European languages to form part of the festival. The initiative has been so successful in south Wales in the last 10 months that more volunteers are needed to help support and run the sessions. Specifically, Peer Motivators aged 50+ who are enthusiastic about dance, and Dance Support Volunteers who can be anyone aged between 18 to 50 who are fit and active. Ideally, you will have some experience in sports, dance, Pilates, yoga or another physical activity.

minor conditions where you can get FREE treatments from your local chemist Did you know about a new service at local pharmacies that offers free, over-the-counter medicines for a range of minor health problems?

It saves you money and the hassle of going to see your doctor.

T

he Common Ailments Scheme (CAS) covers 26 minor conditions that don’t need to be dealt with by a GP. All medicines under the scheme are free, both over-the-counter and prescription. Pharmacists have had extra training so they can offer prescription medicine for these particular conditions if you need it.

The service is easy to access; you don’t need to be referred by your doctor. You can just walk into your local pharmacy and ask to be registered to use the scheme.

The pharmacist will usually see you there and then and the process takes just a few minutes.

All consultations are done in a private room and are completely confidential. If you are not a regular at the pharmacy, take some form of ID, and if you want medicines for your children, take them along with you.

The service is available at all 125 community pharmacies in the ABMU health board region (Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend).

Pharmacists Jon Martin and Benjamin Rock, from Pearns Pharmacy in Cwmfelin, Swansea, have been offering the Common Ailments service since February 2018. Convenience is a key reason the scheme is growing in popularity. Pearns Pharmacy is open from 8.30am-6.15pm and also open on Saturday mornings.

Said Jon: “A lot of the conditions we are able to treat under CAS don’t need a GP appointment, so it is a good use of our skills. I’ve been keen to push pharmacy forward,

it’s been massively under-utilised for many years.”

Nevertheless, if a pharmacist has any cause for concern during a consultation, they can refer the patient back to the GP. Donna Matthews, 40, from Waunarlwydd, used the service when she couldn’t get an appointment with a GP. She said: “The doctor’s surgery is next door but it’s hard to get an appointment and I don’t like to waste their time with a minor ailment. The cost of over-thecounter medicines can be high though, so this service saved me time and money. You also get advice from the pharmacist, which is just as good as from the doctor.”

“If you are working, you can’t always see a doctor at a time that’s convenient to you, so this service is ideal,” said Donna. “I found it confidential and efficient.

The other good thing is that you don’t need to wait in a room with lots of ill people!”

The Common Ailments Scheme can only be offered by trained and registered pharmacists.

“Community pharmacists are highly skilled and qualified,” explained Lowri Lowe, ABMU assistant primary care manager. “Their training includes four years at university and one year in a community or hospital pharmacy. On top of this, they also undergo extra training to be able to deliver the Common Ailments Scheme, and have to be re-accredited every two years.”

Common Ailments Scheme is also taking pressure off GP surgeries, giving doctors more time to care for patients with complex needs.

Shannon Thomas, practice manager at the nearby Cwmfelin Medical Centre said: “We’re a very busy practice with 8,300 patients and there is a huge demand for appointments which we can’t always meet, so the Common Ailments Scheme will definitely help relieve pressure.”

Receptionists at the practice, Wendy Hitchings and Nia Mabbett, have been spreading the word about the scheme to patients.

“At the moment, very few people are aware of the service, so they are surprised and pleased, and nine times out of ten they will go across. It makes all the difference when we tell them it’s free,” said Nia. 

If you’re off to enjoy the local dog friendly beaches, castles and coastline, then there’s no need to put pooch back in the car after a favourite stroll.

Down in Mumbles sniffing out the local history at Oystermouth Castle or following the scents of rabbits on Mumbles nature reserve?

Then you’ve picked a good spot.

At Mumbles Pier Café you can get a scoop or two of doggylicious ice cream. Tempted tongues can choose from three flavours: strawberry and apple; banana, apple and carrot; and honey and banana, with no hidden nasties that could upset sensitive tummies. No glutens, dairy, grains, colour, artificial sweeteners or taste enhancers.

The Mermaid Café Bar and Restaurant has a dedicated area for dogs and owners; there’s free water and complimentary biscuits on offer no matter if they are sandy, wet or dry. Croeso Lounge on Mumbles promenade is very busy, especially at weekends, but there’s a warm

welcome for well-behaved furries and plenty of space to stretch out.

On the bar, the small chalkboard sets out the doggie house rules and sits next to a large jar of mini bones, you can even order a little extra sausage on the side. Their sister restaurant Zinco Lounge in Swansea City Centre is also dog friendly.

Head east down the seafront to the The Woodman by Clyne Gardens, a great place for dogs to explore. The pub offers a pet friendly area where there are water bowls, treats and a warm fireplace to snuggle up to when there’s a nip in the air. Parking is adjacent.

Follow the shoreline to Coast Café, next to the Tawe barrage and bridge, towards the end of Trawler Road in SA1. This waterfront café/ wine bar has a large outdoor area with stunning views over the Marina; it’s the perfect spot to watch the boats go by whilst tucking into a slab of cake; dogs are allowed in the downstairs half of the building too.

So after you’ve walked around Singleton Park, you can sit and relax and not have to worry about juggling a take-away coffee. There’s a big water bowl on the outside patio.

Gower is blessed with lots of dog friendly stretches of sand to run and play, open all year round, plus there’s a tasty smattering of doggy diners on hand. Close to Three Cliffs, you’ll find the Gower Inn at Parkmill, with a large outside seating area and inside bar where dogs are welcome. There’s a wonderful walk over streams and through woods accessed straight off the rear of their car park. Hot dogs can enjoy a bowl of ‘Doom Bark', advertised as 0% alcohol and 100% H2O, and pet-sized sausages are on the menu too.

The Ship Inn is located in the

heart of Port Eynon and offers a variety of great seaside walks. The large, bright bar is a welcoming spot for dogs and owners and The Ship serves a good range of homecooked of bar meals.

The King's Head in Llangennith offers scoops of vanilla ice cream for well-behaved pets, and if you fancy staying the night, then there’s dog friendly hotel rooms too, so why not take advantage of the four-mile long beach just a quick trot down the road; no seasonal restrictions here.

Hop across to north Gower, just a few minutes' walk from the Loughor Estuary, and you can nip into The Reverend James for some welldeserved liquid refreshment as this classic pub serves up a great pint.

Muddy boots and dirty paws are welcome in the bar. 

Sam and Jack are the creators of Nomad, a new bar and kitchen serving small plates with a European flair.

S

am and Jack are childhood friends - after university, they each embarked upon an adventure travelling around Europe to nurture their passions for outdoor activities and simple food done properly. Between them, they have spent eight years soaking up the European culture, meeting local food producers along the way.

They both fell in love with the Alps, which is reflected in the décor, from the skis on the wall to the ski poles as balustrades. It was here they were introduced to the idea of ethical, low volume independent produce, something they were keen to bring to Nomad.

Gowerton has fast become a culinary destination.

Station 86 (Jack’s kiddie) serves up breakfast, brunch and lunch whilst Nomad comes alive at midday to cover the afternoon/evening shift for coffee, tipples and small plates.

The menu is updated weekly and comprises a delicious medley of tapas. All of the dishes are cooked to order by passionate Italian chef Filippo - the bruschetta made from his family recipe is a must-try!

And of course, Nomad is vegetarian, vegan and glutenfree friendly.

The mixed platters for £12.95 are a great way to try the variety of speciality meats and cheeses on offer including

Perl Las, handmade artisan Manchego, Monmouthshire air-dried pork shoulder and 15-month aged Serrano ham from Valenica. The platters are accompanied by artisan sourdough from Little Valley Bakery.

Sam and Jack are particularly proud to be the only stockist in Wales of Boyer Wines. They also serve artisan beers from low volume producers, and the cocktail list continues to develop. Quality coffee is provided by Gower’s Welsh Coffee Roasters.

Being situated in Gowerton, Nomad’s customers can take advantage of the network of transport connections.

They’re at the end of the cycle path, are walking distance from Gowerton train station, and are on the bus route to north Gower, so you can enjoy a tipple without the worry.

They even have their own car park alongside.

Nomad may have only opened its doors a few months ago, but it’s proving very popular. Sampling what’s new on the culinary scene

I love coffee. As a treat, I recently visited Coaltown Coffee's new roastery and coffee shop. There, I caught up with co-founder Scott James. They're already recognised as Wales' best coffee roasters, winning several awards. The roastery takes inspiration from Ammanford's coal-mining history. They even named their top-rated blend Black Gold.

What I love about Coaltown is that it’s proof that you don't have to leave a small town or Wales to be successful. “People said it was a mistake to start my business in Ammanford,” Scott explained. “I want to give people a reason to visit. I want people to say 'Hey, let’s go here!'”

After a tour of the roastery, I sipped a flat white. It was smooth and chocolaty - a damn fine cup of coffee. I ordered wood-fired pizza - a cut above your takeaway pizza. A fluffy crust, stretchy cheese, plenty of toppings and smoky - the Ninja Turtles would approve! For those who don't want coffee, there's plenty of variety; choose from fancy lemonade, cola, alcohol, even kombucha tea. With breakfast, lunch and cakes served, it's the perfect reason to visit any time. DANIEL MARTIN

For steak night Tuesday we arrived at 5pm and it was already starting to get busy. I ordered off the special steak menu with prices starting from £9.10 for a main and a drink. I had a large grill and a can of raspberry lemonade for £10.60. Everything was cooked perfectly; I asked for my steak to be cooked rare and it was served just as I like it. The main course bill for eight of us came to £80 which included eight drinks - for £10 each, you can’t go wrong!

For dessert I chose the cookie dough sandwich with ice cream for £3.25.

I'm a big caramel fan and this was oozing caramel from between the cookie dough - it really hit the spot.

The staff at this Wetherspoons pub were really helpful and we were served with a smile.

The Red Lion also has a Wetherspoons app which my sister used to order more drinks, and they were brought to the table quite quickly.

Everyone enjoyed their meals with no complaints. This is a great restaurant for a celebration or just a treat meal out - you can’t beat a Spoons to keep all the family happy. CHRIS CHAPMAN 

Newly-opened Nomad Bar and Kitchen in Gowerton has impressed locals with its welcoming feel, innovative dishes and global flavours. I popped in briefly for a pint whilst waiting for a bus (any excuse!) and tucked into these delicious dolmades - stuffed vine leaves with lemon dressing - and some home-made Syrian falafel with hummus.

Go for: The varied menu and a chance to get out of town.

Has one food item ever divided the nation as much? The Greggs vegan sausage roll launched earlier this year and has proven to be a runaway hit. It actually took me three days to get my hands on one! My verdict? I prefer it to the traditional version. The pastry is crunchy and light, without be too flaky - always good for a bearded man - and the filling is just as tasty as the usual pork.

Go for: The opportunity to cause a controversial debate with your mates. 

RECIPE cawl

Cawl is a traditional Welsh stew often eaten on 1 March to celebrate St David’s Day. Here, Katie Davies, quarter finalist of BBC One’s Britain’s Best Home Cook, shares her version of the classic dish.

ingredients  2 onions  2 sticks of celery  2 carrots  1 parsnip  1 small swede

 3 potatoes  2 leeks  750g lamb neck fillet, trimmed and cut

into chunks  beef stock (2 oxo cubes)  1 beer or lamb Knorr Stock Pot  fresh thyme  fresh rosemary  fresh parsley

method 1. Prepare the vegetables: slice the onions, celery, carrots and parsnip. Roughly chop the potatoes and swede.

Thinly slice the leeks and separate the white and green parts.

2. Heat a large pan and add a drizzle of oil, add the onions, celery, parsnip and swede. Cook the vegetables, stirring all of the time until golden brown (this is adding to the intense flavour). Then remove the veggies and set aside.

3. If needed, add a little more oil to the pan and quickly brown the lamb chunks.

4. Add the cooked vegetables back into the pan, add the rosemary and thyme and season. Pour over enough stock to cover the ingredients and add the Stock Pot. 5. Bring to the boil, then cover and cook gently. The liquid should hardly bubble for 1½ hours, the lamb should be getting very tender.

6. Add the potatoes and the white parts of the leeks and cook for a further 30 mins.

7. Check the potatoes are tender and adjust the seasoning if necessary.

8. Finally, add the green parts of the leeks, cook for a few minutes more to soften and scatter over chopped parsley.

serving suggestions  Serve with chunks of wholemeal bread and Caerphilly cheese.  Cawl is often better the day after preparing, when all the flavours have developed.

In some areas it is served in a wooden bowl and eaten with a wooden spoon! 
