ourcity It’s easy to forget that new Level park and playground is less than a year old, especially now that it’s become a weekend favorite for many families across the city centre. The recent Grand Community Celebration Event was a great reminder of how popular the park has now become. It was a brilliant day, with live bands, sports and games, children’s activities and heritage walks for the whole community. Jason Kitcat: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk | Profile Photo: Steve George

The New Level Park & Playground Is One Year Old After a successful bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2012, we were able to implement our ambitious plan to restore The Level to a thriving well-used green space. The package of improvements, included ‘dancing’ fountains, a new children’s playground, a sensory garden, a pétanque terrain, a new skate park, a new cycling-themed café serving local food, and new public toilets. We also restored historic features of The Level from the early 1920s including the park pavilions. There really is something for everyone, of all backgrounds and all ages – but it’s particularly important for those living, working and visiting the city centre, where there is a shortage of usable green space. For example young children at Toybox, a pre-school run by Brighton Women’s Centre near St Peter’s Church, have really benefitted since they’ve been able to use the facilities there. Manager Jan Chisnall recently said “Since we’ve been taking children out to play on 4

what’sonjuly14

the new Level, we’ve seen a marked improvement in their development. This new park has made a world of difference to our children’s growth, and has really added to what we offer as a city centre pre-school.” The celebration day was only possible through the hard work of the Level Communities Forum, a group of local people committed to working with the council and others for the park’s long-term benefit. Together we were able to put on an inclusive celebration of the park for the community, organised with the community.

julyfocus As the song goes “getting hot hot hot” but not necessarily the weather (don’t tempt fate) as much as the plethora of diverse events happening in July. There is also an insightful documentary about the outrageous drag queen, ‘I Am Divine’ (18th) and the animated ‘The House of Magic’ (25th). Martin Lampitt: cinema@whatsonguide.co.uk

The Strange Colour Of Your Body’s Tears Out Now on DVD

Dan Kristensen (Klaus Tange) returns from a business trip to discover his wife is missing. Following the cryptic clues given by his strange neighbours he discovers a bloody trail of sexual fantasies and murder. This is an extremely strange film and comparisons to David Lynch’s weirder moments are inevitable. As with Lynch, it is visually stunning, the sound design is every bit as important as the visuals and you have no idea what the hell is going on throughout. This is in no way a criticism as part of the fun of films such as this is trying to

16

what’sonjuly14

decipher the surrealist imagery and make sense of the madness. The soundtrack also lends itself to the overall strangeness as it borrows pieces from old Ennio Morricone scores, giving it the feel of a seventies Italian shocker. Written and directed by Helene Cattet and Bruno Forzani, who are probably best known for their segment in the hit and miss horror anthology ‘The ABC of Death’, ‘The Strange Colour of Your Body’s Tears’ is a visually compelling and unsettling treat that will linger long after the final credits.

shakedown

Now in its fourth year, Brighton’s biggest festival is back – in a new home and date. Shakedown is now a summer affair, on Saturday 19th July, and has moved to Waterhall just a few minutes from central Brighton. With three huge sound systems, this year’s Shakedown looks set to be the biggest and best yet, as some of the world’s biggest names in electronic music come together for one huge rave. editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk

Basement Jaxx Basement Jaxx have been synonymous with dance music for almost 20 years. With a back catalogue including Where’s Your Head At, Red Alert and Romeo, the boys will add to their legacy this summer with a brand new album that promises to emulate their previous success. Shakedown will welcome them as headliners on the main stage, as Basement Jaxx perform their full live show with singers and spectacular visuals.

Main Stage The main stage of Shakedown this year looks set to be a perfect combination of respected house legends and the hottest new talent in electronic music. Infamous London duo Groove Armada join the biggest name in deep house music at the moment – Duke Dumont. Breakthrough act Gorgon City, mash-up master Jaguar skills, DJ EZ, Kidnap Kid and My Nu Leng complete Shakedown’s biggest main stage line-up ever!

MK The Audio stage is back for 2014 with a headliner who is defining house music trends – MK (Marc Kinchen). After well over a decade ruling the underground scene, MK began dominating the charts last year with the biggest house tune of 2013 – his # 1 remix of Storm Queen’s Look Right Through. MK’s Midas touch has benefitted everyone from Paloma Faith and Lana Del Rey to Sam Smith and Rudimental. 18

The rest of the Audio stage reads like a who’s who of house music right now: Co-founder of Hot Creations and member of Hot Natured, Lee Foss, as well as Huxley, who will bring his bass-led garage-driven strain of house, as well as Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat producer Riva Starr, Blonde and Jade Blue. Completing the stage are Brighton favourites Tom Frisco, James Moss, Charles Green and Neal Schtumm.

Zane Lowe The infamous Supercharged Arena returns once again in 2014. After providing the stand-out set for the past three years, the resident king of Shakedown, BBC Radio 1 legend and music supremo Zane Lowe, returns once more. Anyone who has witnessed his extraordinary DJ sets live will no doubt testify to the awesome skill and electric atmosphere he generates, seamlessly blending old school samples with brand new bass heavy tunes.

Supercharged Arena Also playing the huge arena is drum and bass overload Wilkinson who has quickly become one of the biggest names on the scene with productions like Afterglow. Representing Brighton is Shogun label manager and Radio 1’s Mr Drum n’ Bass, Friction, Dismantle and Primitive People. DJ Zinc will also play along with hip hop dubstep legends Foreign Beggars, Radio 1’s carnival queen B Traits and rising star Hannah Wants.

Tickets Advance tickets are selling fast but still available. Just head online to www.shakedown.co.uk and buy your tickets now for £45 + BF (£75 for VIP tickets). Alternatively, you can buy them in person at Resident Records, Dance 2 or the box office at the Brighton Big Screen on the beach. barlife So, who is this illusive Al Fresco? What was he like? Was he even a good person? What we do know, is that he was a lifelong committed casual, hell-bent on wiling away lazy sunny Sundays, enjoying the best of the top of the to-do list – not doing much at all, except for sipping on some ice cold drinks, and gorging on fresh grub. He sure was a lucky guy. Callum Partis: bars@whatsonguide.co.uk

Method Man & Redman Sun 13th , Brighton Dome ‘Superstars’ is a label that doesn’t do justice the presence of Method Man from Wu-Tang Clan and Redman from Def Squad. Supported by DJs Mike Pantali and DJ Outbreak from Juice FM. brightondome.org

Summer Jazz Night Tue 15th, The Old Market Brighton & Hove’s Youth Big Band are performing a mixture of classic swing and funk numbers, with a set list that boasts numbers from jazz greats such as Miles Davis. Don’t let their name fool you though, our Youth Big Band is anything but inexperienced, having recently recorded with Mercury Prize nominated The Go! Team, and performed at Montreux Jazz Festival. theoldmarket.com

summerfestivals

summerfestivals July is one of the busiest months for music festivals this year. The brilliant High Definition, Lovebox, the always huge Wireless and the forest party Farr all take place in the UK this month. And if that wasn’t enough, Croatia is hosting the Garden Festival, a mammoth week-long excursion with more DJs than their flag has checkers. Now we’re just tasked with the awful decision of concluding which to attend... Andrew Kilpatrick: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk

Love Supreme Jazz Festival Fri 4th - Sun 6th July, Glynde Place Jazz FM are again curating the follow up to what was the first jazz festival in the UK in twenty years. Three days and a diverse line-up, from Jamie Cullum to rap icons De La Soul; this festival will explore all avenues of jazz. Nestled in the South Downs this is local festival Sussex can be proud of. lovesupremefestival.com

House of Honey Fri 18th – Mon 21st July, Stanford Hall In the isolated and grand Stanford Hall, nestled within Leicestershire, House of Honey is throwing one huge manor party, with four days of DJs, live music, performances and art. Featuring sets by Seb Fontaine, Mark Sinclair and Count Sizzle among others, festival is a must for anyone wanting a relaxed and friendly retreat, and one hell of a party. houseofhoney.org

Shakedown Sat 19th July, Waterhall Park Brighton’s premier day festival is set to explode with headliners Basement Jaxx leading the charge. Joined by chart favourites Groove Armada, MK and many others, Brighton’s best festival party of 2014 is promising a titanic rave. Hosted in the serene Waterhall Park, a stone’s throw from Patcham, there is no reason for locals not to show the world how hard we party! shakedown.co.uk 36

bestival

bestival One of the ‘10 Best Festivals In The World’ according to a national newspaper (the only UK winner!), Bestival - curated by Rob da Bank - is the Isle of Wight’s biggest & best party weekend. This year’s Desert Island Disco runs 4th - 7th September. OutKast, Chic, Foals, Sven Vath & Beck head a stunning bill boasting 300+ acts across twenty stages - fantastic live music, DJs, comedy, theatre & cinema. www.bestival.net editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk

Chic (Feat Nile Rodgers) Closing Sunday’s Desert Island Disco in spectacular fashion, Nile is the man who wrote ‘Le Freak, ‘Lost In Music’, ‘Everybody Dance’, ‘Spacer’, ‘Good Times’, ‘We Are Family’ and tonnes more gold-plated disco classics. He also sprinkled his pop magic across Diana Ross’ ‘Upside Down’, Duran Duran’s ‘The Reflex’, David Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’, Madonna’s ‘Like A Virgin’ & Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’ amongst many others. Truly unmissable!

Paloma Faith Talking of disco credentials, Paloma says, “Bestival is the best festival because everyone gets dressed up (I will be too)… It’s so perfect that I should be invited to play this year because my new album was influenced by the history of soul music, particularly disco. I was listening to artists like Candi Staton, Prince, Chaka Khan, Gloria Gaynor, Funkadelic… It’s my favourite festival without a doubt!”

Outkast Rob da Bank recently revealed he had to “fight hard” under intense competition to secure newly reformed hip-hop legends OutKast as Bestival 2014 headliners. From Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik to Idlewild, Andre 3000 & Big Boi have consistently delivered booty-shaking brilliance; their live shows are the stuff of legend and, celebrating their twentieth anniversary at Robin Hill this September, this comeback is undoubtedly one of the most feverishly anticipated in recent years. 38

bestival

Featuring a landlocked harbour & good ship HMS Bestival as its centrepiece, The Port arena is the beating heart that powers a hedonistic weekend of pure partying via proper Funktion One cannons, brain-melting spectacles, astonishing aerial displays & insane pyrotechnics. Heading up The Port’s mammoth 2014 DJ line-up is techno protagonist Sven Väth who has been transporting dancefloors with his boundarypushing brilliance for 30+ years. Let’s get shipwrecked!

Wild Smiles Young Winchester band signed to Rob da Bank’s own record label Sunday Best, Wild Smiles have already been described by The Guardian newspaper as; “A band who sound simultaneously like the Beach Boys, the Velvet Underground, The Shoes, The Jesus & Mary Chain and Dinosaur Jr.” With the release of their debut album ‘Always Tomorrow’ in October, the future looks very bright indeed for this hotly tipped trio.

Glass Animals Super-producer Paul Epworth signed Glass Animals to his Wolf Tone imprint and has co-produced their acclaimed debut album ‘Zaba’ (his first major project since the gazillion-selling Adele album). Radiohead are fans (Colin Greenwood promoted a recent hometown Oxford gig) & the band recently sold out their entire UK tour (including a night at James Lavelle’s Meltdown Festival)... And not many bands have a frontman with a neuroscience degree!

Disclosure Dynamic sibling duo Guy & Howard Lawrence aka Disclosure have gone about this conquering the world malarkey in breathtakingly swift fashion and their return to Bestival is a reflection of their meteoric rise. Playing Friday night’s Main Stage, the brothers will, no doubt, take the crowd to fever pitch and beyond with their already overflowing armoury of big hitters & dancefloor detonators, all lifted from their No1 album ‘Settle’.
