ourcity

ourcity Brighton & Hove has been awarded some £31m over the coming years for key developments in our city. This includes funding for regeneration of Circus Street to deliver new homes, offices, student accommodation, a library and academic buildings; a Research Laboratory at Preston Barracks; and much-needed transport improvements at Valley Gardens in our city centre. Our neighbours in our Greater Brighton city area will also receive essential funding. Jason Kitcat: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk | Profile Photo: Steve George

Key Development Funding Funding will help our shared economy and meet the challenges we all face. It includes cash for flood defenses at Newhaven and Shoreham which will protect homes and businesses and allow new ones to be built, and a new access road for Newhaven Port, which is growing in importance as a crucial part of our regional economy. The funding has come through our region’s Local Enterprise Partnership, of which we are a part. This partnership is where councils and business representatives in the area agree what major investments will best support the local economy. The Government has allocated £38m of new funding to the partnership for the coming year, which will help us create 14,000 jobs, 4,600 new homes and 190,000 square

metres of employment space. Importantly, we’ll also be able to bid for more funding to improve our wider transport network. This could mean more funding for our major works making up for previous council administrations’ historic underinvestment in our precious seafront – which many readers will know is in dire need of major refurbishment both as an essential transport route and a major visitor attraction. Our region is doing relatively well economically, and we were recently ranked the third best location in UK for business investment. However we can’t be complacent, and must plan for the future. We need ongoing major investment like this in our transport infrastructure, in business support and skills, to continue growing as a prosperous city and region.

futureevents The only problem with my clairvoyance is that I’m currently looking autumn square in the face. As I write this, we’re supposed to be matching Barbadian temperatures in Brighton, so the look of all that drizzle and clock-turning-back stuff is, well, a massive bummer. That said, there’s a Pandora’s box of good stuff to check out around autumn-time, such as these picks I’ve chosen for this month’s planning ahead sesh… Plum Woodard: future@whatsonguide.co.uk

Scintilla 18th, On DVD This science fiction thriller takes place in the bleak wilds of a former Soviet state. Powell (John Lynch), a war weary mercenary, is hired to lead a team into a secret underground laboratory to steal the research being carried out there. Along the way they discover strange creatures lurking in the abandoned tunnels and eventually meet the scientist who divulges the secrets of the genetic research carried out within. Filmed primarily in Huddersfield on a shoestring budget by Billy O’Brien ‘Scintilla’ makes the most of its limited sets and there are some interesting ideas present but they are not particularly that well executed. The pace in the first half of the film could have done with being a bit snappier as

14

what’sonaug14

what should have been a tense descent into the heart of the research centre just becomes a bit dull. The characters are not fleshed out enough to care about and a bit of humour in the script would not have gone amiss but, saying that, John Lynch shows himself to be an engaging and believable leading man. ‘Scintilla’ is not a particularly bad film, is thoroughly enjoyable in parts but falls somewhat short of what it could have been and had the feel of a story that would have been better served told in another medium. Talking of which, Biff Byford from heavy metal heroes Saxon has formed a super-group, The Scintilla Project, who release their album inspired by the film on the same day.

1st, In Cinemas Visionary director Michel Gondry, who brought us ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’, is back with this quirky piece that should appeal to his devotees. ‘Amelie’s’ Audrey Tatou stars as a woman who is diagnosed with an unusual illness caused by a flower growing in her lungs. Expect a healthy dollop of Gondry’s trademark surrealism and visual flair in this adaptation of Boris Vian’s novel.

Welcome To New York 8th, In Cinemas A lot of New York director Abel Ferrara’s gritty and uncompromising back catalogue rank in some of my favourite films of all time so it is with some excitement that I can announce his latest offering. His knack of fantastic casting decisions seems to continue as Gerard Depardieu and Jacqueline Bisset head up this tale of ultimate power, capitalism and unbridled sexual hunger.

Lucy 22nd, In Cinemas French writer and director Luc Besson returns this month with an intriguing tale of the fantastic. Scarlett Johansson stars in the title role as a woman who, after getting accidentally caught in a dark deal, turns the tables on her captors when she develops super powers. Angelina Jolie was originally cast as Lucy but Johansson may prove to be a better choice in the long run.

Sin City: A Dame To Die For 25th, In Cinemas 2005’s ‘Sin City’ was a violent and visually arresting adaptation of Frank Miller’s comic books shot entirely on green screen by Miller and Robert Rodriguez. They return alongside most of the company including Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis and Jessica Alba but sadly both Michael Clarke Duncan and Brittany Murphy are no longer with us so their characters are regrettably recast.

livemusic Festival season is in full swing, so either top up on live music in between tent life or make up for it completely if you’re not heading out to any of the many festivals this month. Brighton comes into its own during the summer – it’s more or less a festival every day. No surprises that you’re spoilt rotten for gigs throughout August. Here are a few of the dozens happening... Andrew Kilpatrick: live@whatsonguide.co.uk

Stiff Little Fingers Fri 1st, Concorde2 Taut, explosive Belfast-based punk band, Stiff Little Fingers were once referred to as “The Irish Clash”. With sandpaper-throated frontman Jake Burns leading the way, SLF released their debut album in 1979, Inflammable Material. Concorde 2 is happy to announce the return of Stiff Little Fingers to its stage this August. Get a wriggle on for tickets to avoid stiffappointment. Sorry, we mean disappointment. concorde2.co.uk

Erland and the Carnival Tues 5th, The Prince Albert Orkney music-maker Erland Cooper together with multi-instrumentalist, Simon Tong (The Verve, Gorillaz) hit the Albert as part of their tour of their third studio album, Closing Time. If you’ve not caught these guys already, but like your alternative folk, then these guys will be right up your street. Not so much a carnival as just a really good band. facebook: PrinceAlbert

Speedy Oritz Thurs 14th, Prince Albert These guys are the word, and if you haven’t caught a glimpse yet, then August at the Albert is your chance. The Massachusetts four-piece come to the UK this summer with a small eight-date tour, wielding their must-have second album, Major Arcana. If the likes of Pavement and Pixies whet your whistle, then this is your kind of gig concert type affair. facebook: PrinceAlbert 28

Fri 15th, Komedia One of Brighton’s finest singersongwriters plays a hometown show to celebrate the launch of his new single. Pitted by Time Out as “Beautifully ambitious,” and, “One to watch,” Simmons once opened for Jackson Browne, earning him the Browne seal of approval as “a truly great songwriter with an incredibly distinctive voice.” You can’t leave town without having caught this guy do his brilliant thing. komedia.co.uk

The Growlers Tues 19th, Concorde2 This’ll be The Growlers’ third gig in Brighton in just a year. Initially causing a stir last summer at the Green Door Store, the rugged Californian outfit upped their stage at The Haunt on Hallowe’en, and now find themselves headlining the Concorde2 this summer. Basically, that’s impressive exponential popularity growth, of which you most definitely want to hop on the bandwagon. Because they’re ace. concorde2.co.uk

Idlewild Fri 22nd, The Old Market In keen anticipation of their eighth studio record, due for release in 2015, Scottish indie-rock group Idlewild will play just three dates in England this August, including the fantastic T.O.M in Brighton. Their first shows in four years will take an acoustic, stripped back format and will give the band the chance to explore their back catalogue and to try out new songs. theoldmarket.com

Two Three Four Festival Sat 23rd & Sun 24th, Green Door Store What better way to spend the August bank holiday weekend than getting yourself over to the GDS for the fabulously free Two Three Four Festival? After last year’s success, the event returns with another cracking roster of live acts, including Brighton’s finest such as Spit Shake Sisters and Pink Lizards. There’s a BBQ and record sale too! greendoorstore.co.uk

summerfestivals Glastonbury is over, with Reading and Bestival fast approaching. How is the season going so quickly!? Before you know it we’ll be sitting mudless in a public house lamenting the end of summer like wisened poets. Luckily though, if you’re not up for spending ridiculous amounts for your festival experience, there are a shedload of other options, including the kids-focused fun of Standon Calling, not to mention the plethora below: Andrew Kilpatrick: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk

Edinburgh Art Festival

Among them are exhibitions of work by Jim Lambie, cross-medium work by Katie Paterson, Augusto Corrieri, Leon Morrocco and historical exhibitions including collections of American Impressionism, artefacts from the Ming dynasty, and a photo essay by Owen Logan about Michael Jackson’s visit to Nigeria. edinburghartfestival.com

BoomTown
