ourcity

ourcity After several years of hard work and a multimillion pound investment, we recently saw the official opening of the new seafront arches near the West Pier. Some of our incredible seafront Victorian structures are up to 200 years old and over decades, have fallen into disrepair. This not only threatened the structure of the seafront road above, but was a waste of prime space on our beach. Jason Kitcat: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk | Profile Photo: Steve George

Rebuilding Seafront Arches Unfortunately these marvellous Victorian structures had reached the end of their lives. So two years ago we began work on not just patching up, but fully rebuilding these arches. Now we have a stable road, a new promenade, and new public toilets. At beach level we’ve restored 26 former fishermen’s rests now home to 10 local businesses, including Finn Hopson’s new gallery Brighton Photography. He said “It’s a huge privilege being part of such an exciting development on the beach. The council have done an amazing job of restoring the exterior whilst giving us a fantastic, practical space inside from where we can run our businesses. With the i360 finally under way it feels like this part of the beach is going to become another one of the vibrant, creative places that Brighton does so well.” We’re rebuilding other sections of the seafront too, and while there will be some short term disruption on the prom, this work will ensure our seafront remains standing for many more years to come. 4

what’sonsept14

Our work to regenerate our seafront doesn’t stop there; we are also supporting plans for a government loan to bring the i360 tower to regenerate the area. This project, by the team behind the London Eye, has strong support from local resident and business groups, the Local Enterprise Partnership and many others including nearby hotels and venues. It’s no secret that councils are seeing their budgets shrinking – and the new income we will receive from the i360 deal, is a vital source of funding to offset government cuts. Our tourist visitor numbers continue to grow, but we cannot be complacent. It’s only through continually reinventing our city and its attractions that we’ll continue to thrive as a worldclass city.

futureevents September always brings with it a peculiar and potent feeling of nostalgia for me. Perhaps it’s the distinct season’s change or that inherent back-to-school feeling? Speaking of which, if you’re new to Brighton starting out at uni, welcome! It’s dead good here and loads of stuff to do. So enough backward-looking reverie then; let’s take a look at just a tiny selection of what’s upcoming in the next few months. Plum Woodard: future@whatsonguide.co.uk

The Importance Of Being Ernest

Mon 29th – Sat 4th Oct, Theatre Royal Oscar Wilde’s wit storm of bachelor-themed subterfuge comes to Brighton for one week only, straight from London’s West End. Featuring an all-star cast (that’ll be Nigel Havers, Sian Phillips, Christine Kavanagh, Rosalind Ayres, Niall Buggy, Patrick Godfrey, Martin Jarvis and Cherie Lunghi), this latest production of the literary classic is a guaranteed five star night out. atgtickets.com

Amongst Barbarians Fri 3rd - Sat 11th Oct, New Venture Theatre Set in Malaysia and based on a true story, Amongst Barbarians – winning playwright Michael Wall the Mobil Playwriting Award in 1989 - focuses on two Englishmen facing the death penalty for drug trafficking. Their families, lawyer and their gaoler all follow their complex journey to an uncertain destiny. Both drama and comedy spring from unlikely places as cultures collide. newventure.org.uk

The Short & Girlie Show Sat 11th Oct, Caroline Of Brunswick This must-see show courtesy of the legendary eight-strong Brightonbased all-female comedy improv troupe will have you howling – mainly from laughter, but who knows: their shows are always audience-led, feeding off the culturally astute, risqué and down right rude. They swing by their hometown for a side-splitting two hours of hilarity amid their two-week UK tour, ‘Spreading The Love’. shortandgirlie.com 6

Mon 13th Oct, The Haunt This entry has nothing to do with nepotism (this is my cousin’s band) but because they’re actually really bleedin’ good. Forming in 2012, Oxford’s GA toured with oddball chanteuse, St. Vincent, and nailed SXSW in 2013. 2014 recently saw the release of their album debut, Zaba, and this autumn, they play Brighton. Like the Alt-J vibe? Go see - you’ll love these guys. thehauntbrighton.co.uk

Bernie Tormé Wed 22nd Oct, Prince Albert Bernie’s career includes long term axing for Ozzy Osbourne; an integral part of Ian Gillan’s world-touring band, Gillan; and forming Desperado with Twisted Sister frontman, Dee Snider, which also featured Iron Maiden drummer, the late Clive Burr. Currently in the throes of writing a new album, it’s exciting times for Bernie. Come see the man in action in a truly intimate setting. wegottickets.com

Peter & The Wolf Sat 1st OCT, The Dome This production might well be aimed at kids, but frankly, you needn’t be a kid to love this classically orchestrated show. Who can forget the wonderful slew of variously narrated Peter And The Wolf tapes? Mine was read by Sir John Gielgud, although these days, I wish it’d been David Bowie. Anyway, a glorious opportunity to enjoy a glorious performance. brightondome.org.uk

Rich Robinson Fri 21st OCT, Concorde2 Best known as guitarist, songwriter and founder of The Black Crowes, Rich’s songwriting evolved into the musical engine that powered the band to sales of more than 25 million albums. The Black Crowes 2013 world tour kept Robinson busy, but he found time to record new LP ‘The Ceaseless Sight’. The album finds Robinson stepping solidly into his own as a solo artist. concorde2.co.uk

filmclub After the tragic death of Philip Seymour Hoffman earlier this year one of his final films gets a release on the 15th. ‘A Most Wanted Man’ is based on the John Le Carre novel and tells the tale of a Chechen Muslim who illegally immigrates to Hamburg and attracts the attention of a secretive anti-terror unit led by Hoffman. It is directed by the award winning Anton Corbijn (‘The American’). Martin Lampitt: cinema@whatsonguide.co.uk

Frank 15th, On DVD & Blu Ray A young wannabe musician (Domhnall Gleeson) joins an avant-garde band led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank (Michael Fassbender) who hides behind a large fake head and his terrifying bandmate Clara (Maggie Gyllenhaal). Those of you expecting a biopic of Chris Seivey, the man underneath the original papier mache, will be sorely disappointed as this is Frank in name and head only. He more resembles Jim Morrison crossed with Captain Beefheart if he had fronted the Plastic Ono Band in a film that is inspired by the spirit that made Frank Sidebottom such a well loved and iconic figure. The script, by Jon Ronson & Peter Straughan (writers of ‘The Men

14

what’sonsept14

Who Stare at Goats’) and based on the memoir by Ronson, is a celebration of outsiders and the misunderstood creative geniuses of the world. Director Lenny Abrahamson’s film should be applauded loudly for this and it’s all credit to Fassbender that he delivers such a captivating and scene stealing performance without us ever seeing his features. It is inevitable that it is his name in the credits, alongside Gyllenhaal, that will most likely attract the casual filmgoer but this can only be a good thing. Any film that shouts ‘dare to be different’ in the homogenous times that we find ourselves living in, deserves to be seen by as many people as possible.

12th, In Cinemas Based on the children’s book, ‘Here be Monsters’ by Alan Snow, this animated adventure sees a young orphan raised by cave-dwelling trash collectors trying to save his friends from an evil exterminator. The impressive international voice cast includes Simon Pegg, Elle Fanning, Toni Collette, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade and Sir Ben Kingsley. It comes in the obligatory 3D and looks a whole lot of fun.

Before the Winter Chill 22nd, On DVD ‘Before the Winter Chill’ sees Kristin Scott Thomas working once again with BAFTA Award Winning director Philippe Claudel for the first time since ‘I’ve Loved You So Long’ in 2008. This French drama tells the story of a man in the autumn of his life (Daniel Auteuil) torn between a loving wife Lucie and his dangerous attraction for a troubled, mysterious young woman.

The Equalizer 26th, In Cinemas Anyone of a certain age will have fond memories of Edward Woodward dispensing justice to street scum on TV in the 1980s so it was only a matter of time before it got the Hollywood makeover. But who would have thought it would be Denzel Washington in the lead role? The plot involves a face off with Russian gangsters so expect it to be explosive.

Get On Up 26th, In Cinemas There’s no denying that James Brown is a musical and cultural icon with a life that included its fair share of extreme highs and lows so this biopic should make riveting viewing. Chadwick Boseman takes on the role of the Godfather of Soul alongside Dan Ackroyd and True Blood’s Nelson Ellis with Tate (‘The Help’) Taylor in the director’s chair and Mick Jagger producing.

food

food I’m still amazed after many years of eating out in Brighton and Hove how many excellent and varying restaurants we have at our finger tips.. With new establishments seemingly opening weekly you’ve always got a fabulous choice from which to choose. Some restaurants maintain their quality through the years and are firm friends. Here I look at one of those firm friends and one which has transformed for the better. Justin Williams: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk

Browns, 3-4 Duke Street, 01273 323 501 Returning to this Brighton institution after many years. Good to be welcomed by a familiar face and that’s what I remembered of Browns for all those coffees lunches breakfasts the staff were always friendly and upbeat with a professional service throughout. So it’s Saturday night the place is buzzing with a mix of weekenders locals and a smattering of international crowd. I kick started proceedings with scallops (excellent ) pan fried light and juicy. Louise went for linguine crab / prawn with pesto and I went for lobster tagliatelle I but ask if they could swap the tagliatelle for linguine lighter had a big lunch earlier in the day. Exceptional. I ended finishing off the pesto dish.

16

what’sonsept14

Very good but I chose the better dish. All washed down with a bottle of Ridge View sparkling wine (from over the back of the Downs) to finish I could not resist the brownie with a ginger twist and I chose pistachio ice cream, not my best choice, better with vanilla. Good value for a great night out with the consistency of good service. Browns you never lost me good to be back. browns-restaurants.co.uk/ locations/brighton

Burgers & Cocktails 15 North Road, 01273 688885 Burgers & Cocktails appears to have transformed overnight and feels like it always has been there; newly opened on North Road / Jubilee Street corner it has done just that. Previously Giraffe and attracted toddlers and yummy mummies. No longer - bring the urban crowd serving exactly what it says on the sign outside. The staff were very welcoming as I was led to my table for an early supper as I had to attend a drinks party launch later. Kick started proceedings with a “Laid Back Jack cocktail” - think JD honey, lemon juice, triple sec & lemonade served in a long jam jar with a straw…another one please. Then the burger arrived. I’d ordered the classic cheeseburger as I always believe go for the basic / classic dishes as these should be the signature of any establishment. Burger cooked to my request, crinkle chips…yum and a pot of homemade tomato sauce…nice. Dessert - no time so will have to return for that one. A good pit stop. giraffe.net/burgers/location/brighton

b&halbion Albion’s first win of the Championship campaign came away at Leeds United; it’s always a feat to come away from a tough place like Elland Road with three points. We’ve already had a handful of home games at the Amex this season and the support has once again been fantastic. We are delighted to continue offering a limited number of match-by-match hospitality packages in the 1901 Club this season, which have proved very popular with supporters. If you would like to experience the exclusive 1901 Club offering on an Albion matchday, call the 1901 Club team on 01273 878278. Visit www.seagulls.co.uk for more information. Paul Rogers, Business Development Manager

New faces at the Amex The 2014/15 season is well underway and September will see former Premier League clubs Blackpool and Cardiff City visit the Amex. The new summer signings have settled in well with Liverpool starlet Joao Teixeira opening his goalscoring account on his second game, while Danny Holla, Chris O’Grady, Aaron Hughes and David Stockdale have

all impressed during plenty of minutes of the field; and there could be more signings to come. There is also a new feel to the stadium on matchdays with the new FanZone hosting live music and outside catering during the build up to every home game. Not watched Albion yet? Book your ticket to watch the Seagulls at the Amex during September.

barlife Entering into the new season with gusto, come and take a look at our pick of some footballfriendly establishments to get a hoarse throat in. Long gone is the hallowed turf of the once idolised footy Mecca ‘The Providence’ where many spirits of days gone by were lifted or broken, so the beautiful game’s atmosphere rich fixtures have disbanded somewhat, but these picks are very much match fit and ready. Callum Partis: bars@whatsonguide.co.uk

Signalman 76-78 Ditchling Rise, 01273 689783 A throw-ins distance from London Road station, expect a very warm atmosphere and all the major games at this homely-stead – child friendly too, so the nippers aren’t confined to the substitute bench. If tensions are running high on or off the pitch, there’s a lovely patio garden hidden round the back to catch a breath of fresh air depending on the weather. drinkinbrighton.co.uk/signalman

King & Queen 13-17 Marlborough Place, 01273 607207 The concentration of language schools around the area along with its ‘Tudor Inn’ vibes siphon a decent and diverse crowd for most games, especially the Spanish League’s contenders. Not short of space inside or out, screens are abundant so you’re never far from the action. Expect a decently lively atmosphere and hubbub to compliment your game along with modest prices. thekingandqueen.co.uk

Smugglers 10 Ship Street, 01273 328439 A very large venue to cater to all your sporting needs, it’s not just football on offer here, often showing a wide range of events on their many screens, including cricket, F1 and golf. If you’re feeling like a bit more of an active sporting participant there’s also a choice of pool, table football and table tennis (albeit on a slightly improvised table!). smugglersbrighton.com 22

A very active and by default ‘atmospheric’ charm is sure to help you get in the spirit. thelionandlobster.co.uk

Railway Bell 26-27 Surrey Street, 01273 326730 Favoured for pre and post game revelling alike (you can stay watch the game too of course), this is the place to sample some local passion and maybe procure a few new blue and white comrades on match day. Situated right by the station, it’s a preferred thirst quenching (and Dutch courage building!) respite before heading to Falmer on the train. railwaybellbrighton.com

Montpelier Inn 8 Montpelier Place, 01273 770916 Divert yourself just off the beaten path from the East-end of town into this long-time family run establishment (a rarity in Brighton these days!) for a traditional and welcoming public house with a distinct focus on catering to football fans, across four plasma screens. A well kept whole pint of Harvey’s is sure to compliment the game of two halves.

World’s End 60-61 London Road, 01273 692311 Entering extra time now, as we dribble down the ever regenerative London Road stopping at the final venue for the month, the aptly named World’s End. livemusic At the tail end of the summer Brighton, as should now be expected, isn’t slowing down it’s rattling off of quality gigs throughout the city. From appearances by The Saturdays at Brighton Centre on the 20th to the London Philharmonic Orchestra ‘cruisin thru da B-town Dowme’ on the 27th, our fair city is still frothing at the mouth with gigs like sea foam. It’s funny because it’s thematic, see? Andrew Kilpatrick: live@whatsonguide.co.uk

Wye Oak Mon 1st, Green Door Store Since 2006 this Baltimore indie rock duo have been infusing folk with newgaze and noise sensibilities, creating a layered din with minimal manpower. After the mammoth success of 2011’s Civilian, Wye Oak have returned with their fourth and frequently lauded release Shriek. Combine their lo-fi jams with the intimate settings of Green Door Store and you’ve got one hell of a gig. thegreendoorstore.co.uk

Mordred & Furyon Mon 1st, Concorde 2 British rockers Furyon are hitting the UK and EU to tour this Summer with Funk/Thrash Metal legends Mordred. Of the back of debut album ‘Gravitas’ Furyon looks to release their second beast later 2014. Live, expect explosive guitar riffs and solos, expressive vocal delivery and melodies to scream along to. The two see support from locals Kickfist and heavy metal band Collisions. FB: MordredBand

Sohn

Sat 13th, The Haunt Based in Vienna, Sohn’s debut album, Tremors, has given him a fanbase in the electronica scene. Mixing haunting vocal lines with warm analogue beats andsynths, Sohn lies between soulfulness and slow, pulsing melancholic atmosphere, he attempting to explore the duality and contrasts of the Viennese mountainous landscapes and the gritty London backdrop in which he grew up.thehauntbrighton.co.uk 28

Tue 23rd, Brighton Centre After the fervour surrounding the release of Alt-J’s debut, An Awesome Wave, in 2012 (winning the coveted Mercury Prize), the trio now have a lot to prove on their sophomore, This Is All Yours. Due to release the day before this concert, this is one of the very first chances to ascertain whether one of England’s most esoteric mainstream acts have sunk or swum. brightoncentre.co.uk

Fu Manchu Fri 26th, Concorde 2 On the back of their recently released eleventh album, Gigantoad, Fu Manchu are touring their trippy and heavy brand of desert travelling, sun blistered, purple hazed alternative rock that has made them a staple of the stoner music world since their inception in the mid-80s. Touring with everyone from Kyuss to Monster Magnet and White Zombie, Fu Manchu are real life desert legends! concorde2.co.uk

Fimber Bravo Sat 27th, Brighton Dome The steel pan virtuoso Fimber Bravo is as famous for his incredible skill as he is for subverting sterotypes of the tropical instrument, having worked with artists as diverse as chart-toppers Hot Chip and the Japanese producer Zongamin. He also founded the 20th Century Steel Band, whose album Heaven & Hell remains one of the most sampled in hip-hop history. An unmissable show. brightondome.org

Hawkwind Mon 29th, The Old Market Twenty five studio albums, tomes of ex-members including Motorhead’s Lemmy, set up in ‘69 and been going ever since: Hawkwind are a truly legendary space rock band. Re-inventing and invigorating genres from prog rock to protopunk, their unquestionably vast career is being recapped this month in Brighton with a greatest hits show. Dad rock for dads who find Dire Straits ‘far too pretentious’. theoldmarket.com

summerfestivals

summerfestivals And so begins our yearly pining for the festival season as it draws to an abrupt close. However, as always, September seems hell bent on making sure it goes out with explosively, with everything from chiptune, chart music, indie rock and post-stuff being thrown around music fests whilst art and literature festivals continue to pepper the cities and countryside. Stamina is the name of the game; here’s to one last month! Andrew Kilpatrick: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk

Bestival Thu 4th–Sun 7th, Robin Hill Country Park, Isle of Wight Curated and organised by DJ Rob da Bank, Isle of Wight’s September is back with a huge line-up this year. Bestival is hosting Foals, Outkast, Wild Beasts, London Grammar, SBTRKT, Beck, Chic featuring Nile Rodgers and the usual abundance of comedians, theatre and art projects, Bestival provides festival-goers another explosive end to summer on the Isle of Wight. bestival.net

Freedom Festival Fri 5th – Sun 7th, Hull Funded by the Hull Council as part of the city’s initiative to become an epicentre for culture in the UK by 2017, the festival hopes to bring a medley of music, theatre and art to the city, hosted in venues throughout Hull from stages on the marina, to within the city hall, Holy Trinity Church, culture museums, art galleries and theatres. freedomfestival.co.uk

Festival No.6 Fri 5th – Sun 7th, Portmerion, Wales Held in the visually stunning village of Portmerion on the west coast of northern Wales, Festival No. 6 has the venue down to a tee. Need a few reasons to travel the distance? London Grammar. Beck. Bonobo. Julio Bashmore. Los Campesinos!. Childhood. Hundreds of other acts, cinema events, arts and culture exhibitions and events and DJs. That should do. festivalno6.com 34

summerfestivals

Superbyte Thu 11th – Sat 13th, The Zoo, Manchester England’s finest and most eclectic chiptune festival returns, mixing high octane electronic dance with an abundance of workshops, DJs and gaming tournaments to keep everyone busy over its three day run; and all days are packed with the best in the scene. Bit Shifter, Kodek, Trey Frey, Jellica, Steve and Dubmood are but a few of the gods in attendance. Superbytefestival.co.uk

Southsea Fest Sat 20th , Various Locations, Southsea The South’s biggest multi-venue street festival, after our own ‘Great Escape’, hits Portsmouth’s suburbia once again this year, just in time for the freshers’ rush. Showcasing the best of the underground, with sets from Dinosaur Pile-Up, Pawws and Bad Grammar but to name a small few, Southsea looks set to once again bustle with activity and that famously addictive atmosphere we love. Southseafest.com

Breakout Festival Sat 27th, Brighton Racecourse The first and only outdoor heavy rock festival to have descended on the shores of Brighton is set to step up the city’s rock and metal scene, with the first line up announcement featuring Funeral For A Friend, The Blackout, Silent Screams, Betraying The martyrs and The Qemists. Many more acts to be announced alongside a secret headliner. Get your leathers on. breakoutfestival.co.uk

clublife

clublife As the nights draw in and the weather gets colder you will find that there are loads of new club nights springing up all over the city. These nights deserve your support, especially the ones that push the boundaries of what clubbing should be. So if you see something that piques your interest make sure you go along and drag your mates with you. Spread the word and they’ll thrive. DJ Lamp: club@whatsonguide.co.uk

90s Hip Hop Sweatshop Fri 5th, The Haunt This night is a non stop jam of nineties hip hop classics and New Jack Swing. If that’s your kind of thing then you know exactly what to expect but for the uninitiated think Bobby Brown, Snoop Doggy Dogg, The Notorious B.I.G, 2 Pac, Warren G, Erik B & Rakim, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, R Kelly, LL Cool J and more. thehauntbrighton.co.uk

Trading Places – Fleetwood Mac Fri 5th, Green Door Store This is a great idea for a club night – pick an artist, invite local bands to interpret their songs in their own inimitable fashion and finish it off with DJs playing a mix of tunes inspired by said artist. Tonight it’s Fleetwood Mac’s turn but will it be blues or coke fuelled AOR behemoth Mac that triumphs on the dancefloor? thegreendoorstore.co.uk

Laurent Garnier Sat 6th, Concorde 2 Laurent Garnier is back for another three hour set consisting of his unique blend of Techno, Jazz, House, Electronica, Dub, Breakbeat and whatever else the moment brings. This DJ, artist and radio presenter has been at the cutting edge of dance music for twenty five years and is a true pioneer so make sure you catch him. laurentgarnier.com 38
