ourcity During the turn of the 20th century, Brighton & Hove played a pivotal role in the nascent film industry. The ‘Brighton School’ of filmmakers were among the world’s first movie pioneers - making, producing, distributing and marketing major films as early as 1897. This rich cinematic heritage has been recognised through Brighton & Hove’s recent designation by the British Film Institute as a ‘Film Hub’ for the South East. Jason Kitcat: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk | Profile Photo: Steve George

Film Hub South East Our successful bid is a testament to the joint work of city council officers, the University of Brighton, the Duke of York’s Picturehouse, and local arts organisation Lighthouse. We now have £900,000 over the next four years to provide advice and support to the film industry in our region. Brighton & Hove has over the years appeared in many featured films - most famously Brighton Rock. However the demand to use our city as a filming location has soared, and extends beyond movies to include productions such as music videos, TV programmes and advertisements. In fact we now get around 300 requests a year to film in public spaces. Council staff work hard to ensure filming

runs smoothly and to help with practical arrangements such as road closures and ensuring local residents and businesses are kept up to date. As well as offering a variety of locations in front of the camera, our city is also host to many local creative and digital companies that support film production, including sound and lighting experts, producers, and scenery design artists. So as part of our commitment to being a ‘film friendly’ city, we’re setting up a citywide database of local businesses for when film teams come to Brighton & Hove. All of this means a higher profile for Brighton & Hove on-screen as a visitor destination, and a clear statement that we are a place for filmmakers to bring their business.

Wish You Were Here, 12th, On DVD

Only three people return home to Australia from a couples’ holiday in South-East Asia with only one of them knowing what really happened the night that their companion disappeared but, as life returns to normal, more secrets are revealed and this begins to impact on their everyday family life. ‘Wish You Were Here’ is the full-length directorial debut of Australian actor Kieran Darcy-Smith and is written alongside his wife, Felicity Price, who also stars. The mystery of the missing person is what propels the plot but, ultimately, this is very much a piece about the impact that a

dark secret can have on a family and the person who is keeping it. There are some fantastic performances from Joel Edgerton and Price, which keep the film from sinking into the mundane and inject true pathos into the proceedings. The horrifying truth, when it is revealed, loses its impact somewhat amidst the many modern day traumas that are unfolding within but nevertheless, if approached as a drama and not the thriller it initially seems to be, ‘Wish You Were Here’ will keep you guessing and is a believable study of a man burdened by a very dark secret.

thegreatescape The ‘Brightonian music fan’s favourite time of the year is here again. Below is not a comprehensive list of the incredible talent that will be In Brighton this year, in fact there are literally hundreds more: Clean Bandit, LE1F, Tokimonsta, Superfood, Flux Pavillion, Wet, Jungle, etc. To begin, though, here are seven of the most exciting to hit TGE this year: (be sure to hit up www. greatescapefestival.com for some tickets!) Andrew Kilpatrick: live@whatsonguide.co.uk

Example Thu 8th, Brighton Dome With support from English dance producers Shift K3y and Show N Prove, Album Chart topper Example is headlining the first of TGE’s special Dome gigs. Supporting his upcoming fifth album, ‘Live Life Living’, Example’s blend of British hip-hop and electronic styles has led him to two sell-out arena tours, sets at Glastonbury and Ibiza Rocks and two number one singles. Huge ain’t the word.

Wild Beasts

Fri 9th, Brighton Dome Following their critically acclaimed fourth album, ‘Present Tense’, the Kendal dream- / art- / experimentalrock quartet have been storming through Europe on tour, garnering huge support and success. Now they’re coming home and hitting Brighton, bringing with them their brand of esoteric but somehow beautiful indie mastery, and with support from Southend art rockers These New Puritans and folky altband Adult Jazz.

BadBadNotGood Thu 8th, Spiegeltent BadBadNotGood are a band with a great story and talent. With a style based in improvised jazz, the Canadian trio have since become a mainstay in the world of hip-hop collaborations, bringing their freeform genius to tracks by Danny Brown and Frank Ocean among others. TGE have booked them just before the release of their third album, ‘III’, so expect a slew of new tunes. 30

summerfestivals Around mid-September every year, like a metronome, I become a little mopey. Then, the following May I become ecstatic again. Is there such thing as ‘music fan hibernation’? Anyway, with May chugging towards us like a freight train of fun (they exist), the festival season is beginning to dawn. Fields everywhere are sighing in anticipation whilst festival bookers panic. Better get my fill before we go back under in September Andrew Kilpatrick: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk
