Community rallies behind fundraising for new daycare

The former SaskTel building on Ominica Street West in Moose Jaw now houses a new 15-bed emergency Photo courtesy Jason G. Antonio/ MooseJawToday.com shelter called Willow Lodge.

Emergency shelter created in Moose Jaw The Government of Saskatchewan is investing $124,400 to establish 15 emergency shelter spaces in Moose Jaw, operated by John Howard Society of Saskatchewan. The funding is part of the Provincial Approach to Homelessness, announced in October 2023. “The Ministry of Social Services is pleased to support John Howard in its important work caring for members in their community who are experiencing homelessness,” Social Services Minister Gene Makowsky said. “The co-ed shelter is the result of collaborative efforts between the province, city, Square

One Community Inc., and John Howard Society of Saskatchewan to improve outcomes for people experiencing homelessness in Moose Jaw.” Willow Lodge opened this week at 83 Ominica Street West, providing emergency shelter services for men and women between the hours of 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. In addition, referrals to programs and services provided by government and other community agencies will assist clients by connecting them to the supports they need to transition to safe and stable housing. John Howard Society of Saskatchewan provides

prevention, intervention, support service, and advocacy in communities to support positive social outcomes. This funding is provided to enable Willow Lodge to open and operate 15 shelter spaces from January 22, 2024, to March 31, 2024. “For the past few years, our organization has offered supports for people experiencing homelessness in Moose Jaw,”said John Howard Society of Saskatchewan CEO Shawn Fraser. “We understand that shelters are not a longterm solution to dealing with poverty, but we also know a lot of the folks who will likely utilize the

shelter and look forward to helping with this important project.” The $40.2 million investment in new funding through the Provincial Approach to Homelessness over the next two years will create 155 new supportive housing spaces, 120 new permanent emergency shelter spaces, and enhance community safety and outreach responses. The additional funding for 120 new emergency shelter spaces in Saskatchewan communities, based on need, will mean approximately 500 permanent emergency shelter spaces are available across the province this winter.

Continued from front page While the current projection for renovation costs, supplies and initial operating expenses is set at just over $370,000, Batty said they fully expect this goal to change as construction begins. Two years of fundraising have occurred and the group is pleased to have $148,000 towards that goal. Community and corporate support have been acknowledged by the group for the success of the fundraising efforts thus far. According to Batty, sponsorship packages were created. The RM of Lake of the Rivers and Southland Co-op were part of their diamond sponsorship while Platinum sponsorship was received from the Assiniboia Kinsmen, who continues their mandate of ‘serving the community’s greatest needs’. The St. Lawrence and St. Boniface Anglican Church on Fifth Avenue West was purchased and the decommissioning began at the start of 2023. “Members of the local congregation advocated for our project and provided all the assistance they could. We were only able to take this huge step and purchase our future facility thanks to their support,” added the Golden South Childcare Centre board. Batty also stated, “The Ministry of Education will have to approve our license before this becomes official but we are applying for 32 childcare spaces. There are many regulations around licensed childcare spaces, including specific square footage and staffing requirements, so these are the maximum spaces that will fit in our facility.” A community survey in the fall of 2022 had responses from 55 families that 87 children were in need of childcare in the Assiniboia area, so these

32 spaces doesn’t even fill the demand. “With a community of Assiniboia’s size, it’s safe to assume the actual demand is even higher than this,” affirmed Batty. The board and volunteers are excited with the progress, including the announcement in October that they would be one of 41 recipients of Canada-Saskatchewan Early Learning and Child Care Agreement. The funding from this agreement is intended for the construction costs needed to meet building and licensing codes, with the board remaining hopeful these funds will be enough to renovate their facility. Golden South Childcare Centre is currently waiting for approval of their building permit and then will ask local tradespeople to submit tenders, once the permit is approved. Batty said that once work begins, they believe they will become operation by the fall of 2024. Gratefulness from funding received comes with hopefulness for continued support as the group still needs to fundraise for equipment, supplies, toys and other necessities needed for the new childcare centre. Board members are currently looking for toys, books, highchairs, baby gates, monitors, unused art supplies, step stools, play structures such as kitchens and large storage containers. “Our latest fundraiser, Ladies Night, was held on January 13. We were thrilled to have over 200 local ladies join us for an amazing evening that included Banger Bingo. We are projecting that the event raised over $8,000 to go towards supplies and equipment. We look forward to hosting the event again next year.” A testament to the industrious group, whose dream of a new childcare centre in Assiniboia, has made the vision closer to reality. Working parents in the community will soon have the benefit of a new childcare centre. Thanks to continued community support, this day care is one step closer to completion and as the saying goes, ‘teamwork makes the dream work’.

Keep our community beautiful.

Province invests in 211 support, new Re:Connect program The Government of Saskatchewan is providing the United Way with $634,000 in 2023-24 to support 211 Saskatchewan and the new Re:CONNECT service to support families and individuals impacted by interpersonal violence. This is part of an overall investment of $27.5 million by the Government of Saskatchewan this year to address interpersonal violence and abuse. 211 Saskatchewan is a one-stop service for people seeking a wide range of supports and information, including for those impacted by intimate partner violence,

sexual assault, or family violence. Re:CONNECT is a crisis hotline, provided in partnership with Family Service Regina, which provides families and communities with immediate crisis management and de-escalation support to individuals at risk of interpersonal violence. “It is important to raise awareness about the confidential, accessible services that 211 Saskatchewan provides to support adults, youth, children and families grappling with interpersonal violence and abuse,” said Justice Minister and Attorney General Bronwyn Eyre.

“We appreciate the United Way and Family Service Regina for their work with us, supporting some of the most vulnerable people in our province.” Both 211 Saskatchewan and Re:CONNECT services are available now. Access is offered throughout Saskatchewan in over 175 languages, including 17 Indigenous languages. For services, residents can dial 211 or visit:sk.211.ca/, or reconnect.sk.211.ca/. Individuals can access Re:CONNECT through the existing 211 Saskatchewan line. They will take part in a brief assessment and then

be connected with Family Service Regina case workers, who will provide up to 30 minutes of intervention therapy to address their immediate risks. “The 211 crisis line provides information, support and resources to those who need them, in a safe, and accessible manner.” Minister responsible for the Status of Women Laura Ross said. “These are critical services, and the United Way has been a great partner in building supports that protect some of our most vulnerable Saskatchewan residents.” Of the $634,000 in funding, approximately

Minimum age for purchase of tobacco and vapour products set to increase Effective February 1, 2024, the minimum age for the purchase of tobacco and vapour products will increase from 18 to 19 years of age. In October 2023, the Government of Saskatchewan passed proposed legislation calling for the increase in the minimum age for tobacco and vapour product purchases. The legislative change aligns tobacco and vaping prod-

uct restrictions with alcohol and cannabis. “It is important for us to protect Saskatchewan youth from the dangers of tobacco and vapour products,” Health Minister Everett Hindley said. “These products have no place in Saskatchewan schools and I’m pleased that MLAs on both sides of the house voted unanimously to take the necessary steps to protect students from being

exposed to these products.” Tobacco and vapour product retailers are responsible for ensuring they only sell these items to people 19 years and older. Government-issued identification containing the person’s photograph, date of birth and signature (e.g. a passport or driver’s license) is required to confirm age. Retailers will have to update their signage to reflect the new minimum

age. The sign must be visible at the cash register where products are purchased. The Ministry of Health will be mailing new till stickers to retailers in January. Retailers can get additional till stickers from their local public health office or by downloading and colour-printing the signage directly from the Signs for Tobacco and Vapour Product Retailers webpage.

$500,000 is being dedicated to Re:CONNECT (in partnership with Women and Gender Equality Canada), and $134,000 to 211 Saskatchewan. “Crisis hotlines are an essential service for people experiencing gender-based violence, especially for people living in rural communities,” Women and Gender Equality and Youth Minister Marci Ien said. “Providing timely funding to organizations like United Way will make sure that these hotlines are able to continue providing life-saving services for everyone, no matter where they live.” The United Way is made up of locally-governed organizations that address community challenges and improve quality of life. Family Service Regina provides counselling services and helps victims of domestic violence navigate the criminal justice system. “United Way is thrilled to collaborate with Family

Service Regina and the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General to introduce the Re:CONNECT helpline to the province,” said United Way Regina, 211 Sask. director Kristin Nelson. “This transformative initiative takes a truly proactive stance, offering individuals a free, secure and non-judgmental support system that empowers them to rebuild healthy relationships and communication, ensuring they never have to face challenges alone.” “Family Service Regina is excited to partner with 211 Saskatchewan to provide quick and easy access to those who need in-themoment support, 24 hours a day, to assist with stressors, relationship challenges, and emotional regulation,” said Family Service Regina CEO Kirk Englot. The United Way plans to launch a marketing strategy later this year to promote awareness for 211 and Re:CONNECT.
