WINTER Tire Sale

Sherri Solomko Freelance Reporter The Assiniboia Times reached out to Assiniboia’s Librarian, Lori Crighton, and asked what is on tap for the new year. She responded, “We are planning on changing our hours slightly to better serve our patrons. The change will take effect on January 5.” “We will be planning something for Literacy Day which is January 27, but we are not sure of all the details yet. We are joining with the Shurniak Art Gallery to host a ‘One Book One Province’ event: a reading with author Trevor Herriot, author of Towards a Prairie Atonement.” Crighton added, “In April, we will continue with our Silent Auctions, twice a year in the spring and winter. We will have a summer reading program and summer events happening. We are planning on holding another Steak Night at some point also.” Assiniboia’s Librarian also acknowledged that they used some of the funds raised through their auctions and raffles to purchase new chairs for kids and teens as well as bean bag filler to plump up existing bean bag chairs, along with another white board to advertise in house upcoming programs and events. Additionally, a shelf was put in for children to take home crafts and coloring sheets and don’t forget, some new books too. “Due to increasing demand, we are growing our

collection of Large Print and audiobooks.” The Assiniboia’s Library accepts donations of books/ DVDs/magazines as long as they are in good condition. “We have two very comfortable sitting areas for people to enjoy. We also received funding from Assiniboia Kinettes and Assiniboia Rotary. Assiniboia Rotary funded the purchase of our first adjustable height computer desk. A grant from the Golden South Wind Community Benefit Fund allowed us to add four more adjustable height computer desks as well as several folding tables. The computer desks can be raised or lowered by the push of a button to suit the users’ needs.” Assiniboia’s Librarian said there were a number of highlights in 2025, “We had a great year. We ran the Storytime and Itsy-Bitsy program three times. Fibre Studio ran all year. Nerds Unite ran all year. We had a very successful silent auction in the spring and we wrapped up our winter auction on December 12, which looked to be very good.” Bringing in the Science Centre, Nanan Stem Academy, a 3D Printing Workshop, and Sparky the Fire Dog joined the Assiniboia Fire Department to teach fire safety were additional year’s highlights. As well, patrons and families enjoyed Mr. Eric, a children’s singer and performer who was part of the 2025 lineup at Assiniboia.

The Rebels recently played against the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings. It was a good, clean game with a couple of minor penalties lots of end to end rushes. Both teams were short on the bench and it showed in the third period. Rebels were outshot in the game 35-30.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Here are three things you can start doing today to green your routine:

• Stop using plastic shopping bags, and switch to a reusable tote. • Reduce plastic and paper consumption by switching to a reusable bottle for hot and cold drinks. • Choose products that are made from recycled materials with minimal packaging. Start adding a new eco-friendly habit every week, and see what a difference a year can make!

take time to light the candles of Hope, Joy, Peace, and Love and remember those gifts that Jesus brings us. We can take time to delve deeper into what happened in that manger; the who, why, what, and the how of it all. In my church community during our mid - week and Sunday services we have been looking at the cast of characters. Looking at them and learning from them and finding parts of ourselves in them. I invite you to re-

read the narrative found in the Gospel Luke 2:1-20 and ask yourselves who you are in this story? Where would you fit? If you aren’t sure I invite you to come and join the ALPHA class that is being organized by the Alliance and Lutheran Church, in Assiniboia in (starting January 13). This is the place where you can ask the big questions and discover your part in the narrative that is your life. I pray that you and your families have all the blessings of this season.

COLUMN: WHY I LOVE SASKATCHEWAN AND TELEMIRACLE

Sherri Solomko/Freelance Report Fifty years, this is a remarkable milestone for a telethon that began with a vision, and a hope that it can run at least five years to help people across the province when they needed it most. When the year 2026 rolls around, Telemiracle will have surpassed that five-year dream and enter its 50th year of hosting Saskatchewan’s only telethon. What amazes me about Telemiracle is that donors put their complete trust in the Kinsmen foundation. They may not know any of the people on this board but they know they can trust them to put their donations to the best use possible for Saskatchewan people. We may or may not know any of the committee involved in planning each year’s Telemiracle telethon; but we continue to glue ourselves to the TV and social media updates on Telemiracle weekend because we know there will be some good news stories coming from them. And, we might or might not know a Kinsmen or Kinette member; but we trust them as their 49 years of fundraising, volunteering for and hosting Telemiracle each year tells us these are great people. Each year Saskatchewan donors send money by way of donations, pledges, bequests or dedications to this foundation because they know from the reputation this foundation has built, that their donation will be put to good use. In essence, these donors are putting their trust in strangers because of the reputation Telemiracle has, because of its long standing tradition and because each year they get to see videos of the work the Kinsmen foundation has done for people in

our province. My dad, who was part of preliminary plans for this vision to reality event has told us many times that they were hopeful they could keep this telethon running five years. When he, like the rest of Saskatchewan, was blown away with the first million earned in 1977, we all got to see a glimpse of what makes our province great. As a kin kid, we were excited each year to see what kind of project we could be part of with our local kinsmen club. We eagerly canvassed for pledges for skate-a-thons and dance-a-thons and even rode 20 miles by horseback on a snowy day all in efforts to raise money for Telemiracle. That excitement led into adult years as a Kinette and of staying committed to this annual provincial tradition; as well as teaching our children this same commitment. As soon as the telethon ends, communities will see groups and individuals already planning their next fundraisers. Saskatchewan people are so invested in this annual event that they continue to organize and support year round fundraisers for the cause. This is the other half of what makes Saskatchewan people, and Telemiracle, so great. There are people within your community’s Kinsmen, Kinette and Kin Clubs as well as ordinary citizens who work hard with fundraisers for this cause. Even though they may never know the recipients receiving the money they have worked hard to fundraise for, they continue to do so because they believe in Telemiracle and what it accomplishes year after year. They believe it’s a provincial point of pride to continue supporting

something that is so beneficial to the entire province; and really, so much fun to be a part of in any manner. They know and trust that Kinsmen foundation operates largely with Kin members who are volunteers, not with salaries of a corporate board. Help them celebrate this 50th anniversary by doing what you can, where you can, when you can. Crowd sweeps at local hockey games; challenge your family, friends and neighbors to all donate $50 in honor of this 50th anniversary; support a school or community fundraiser or event. Think back to the first years of this part of our provincial culture and contribute $52, representing a dollar for every week of the year. It all adds up and it all matters. Whether you are on the Kinsmen/Kinette side of this story, the donor side of the story or the recipient side of the story – we are all united in the cause knowing and trusting that our combined efforts are helping those Saskatchewan residents who need it most and could use a hand up. We do this year after year because that is what Saskatchewan people are always known for – helping out a friend, neighbor or even a stranger in time of need. Only in Saskatchewan can you say “Ring those phones” or “Where are we going” and you elicit an immediate familiar response. Saskatchewan people support Telemiracle because they know it is fun, it brings about community and provincial camaraderie and they know they are banding together to help in the best way they can. Let’s work together to make this 50th anniversary of Saskatchewan the best one yet! 910, Assiniboia, SK SOH 0BO. Assiniboia Times is Community Newspapers Association, the Saskatchewan

She will also be remembered by many special nieces and nephews, her sister-in-law, Andrea Gelowitz, and many special friends who were so dear to her. Laura was delivered by her oldest sister on the family farm near McCord, SK on September 30th, 1933 to parents Jessie (nee Loucks) and Allan McLeod. She was the youngest of ten children. Laura attended Varsity, a country school, then McCord High School. She finished Grades Eleven and Twelve at Central Collegiate in Moose Jaw. Kidney failure: a silent and dangerous disease Following routine medical checkups, many older adults are shocked to learn they have kidney failure— and for good reason. This disease often goes unnoticed because its symptoms resemble those of other conditions. That’s why it’s often described as insidious. Here’s what you need to know. Kidney failure occurs when the kidneys’ filters, called “nephrons,” become damaged and can no longer effectively remove waste and excess water from the body. Seniors have a higher risk of kidney problems, with nearly 40 per cent of those over 65 having Chronic Kidney Disease. While kidney function naturally declines with age, the actual risk of reaching end-stage kidney failure (requiring dialysis) is lower in older adults

compared to younger people because other causes of death often occur first. Key risk factors in seniors include diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, certain medications, dehydration, and kidney stones, all of which put more stress on already aging kidneys. What are the symptoms? Kidney failure can cause several symptoms, including: High blood pressure. Fatigue. Loss of appetite and weight. Itching. Difficulty breathing. What are the treatments? Treatment depends on the stage of the disease. In mild to moderate cases, doctors focus on monitoring blood characteristics and taking

steps to slow or prevent further kidney damage. In advanced stages, treatment may involve dialysis or hemodialysis, both methods of filtering the blood. In some cases, a kidney transplant may be required. Regular medical check-ups are key to detecting kidney failure early. Take charge of your health by talking to your doctor. What do the kidneys do? The kidneys are organs that sit on either side of the spine. They remove waste products from the blood (such as urea and creatinine) and regulate water and mineral levels in the body. They also produce hormones that help regulate blood pressure, form red blood cells and maintain proper calcium and phosphorus levels in the body.

Rocket Report: Basketball teams finish strong before Christmas break

By Gillian Couttie Submitted by Gillian Couttie The Assiniboia Composite High School sports are currently a pause for the Christmas break. The senior boys’ basketball team was in Moose Jaw on December 15. They won 103-61 against Riverview/ Cornerstone Christian and improved their regular season record to 3-0 and are in sole position of first place in the junior varsity league.

Our senior girls’ basketball team were also in Moose Jaw on December 15 for league action, they took on Vanier’s Jr. Team, coming out with a victorious 66-32 win. The senior girls’ team also sits in first place in the junior/junior varsity league with a 3-0 record. Our sport programs will now look to continue their success in the New Year. On school news, during the last week of school was filled with tons of festive fun! Starting off our week on December 18 was the green and red day, where the school was busy with their christmas colors. Gingerbread house making went through from December 16 and December 17, where we also had our Santa vs. Elf vs. Reindeer day. We all got to show off our beautiful ugly Christmas sweaters on December 17, and enjoy a large Christ-

mas feast with our school family! Mrs. Tallon’s grade 10 foods class worked hard and long to give their holiday gift to the students and staff. Everyone was beaming with festive joy! There

was plenty of leftovers on December 18 which was also Christmas hat and sock day. Then to end off the merry week, our school had their pajama day. Students were greeted good morning

with hot chocolate, and later taken to the Southland Co-op Centre where both students and staff had an afternoon of fun accessing all of the amenities including the skating rink, teen centre, multipurpose room,

rock climbing wall, and the simulator room.. Our Rocket family gets to relax with a well deserved break, but excitement for the New Year remains. Stay tuned for more updates after the holiday break!

A large Christmas feast was held at the ACHS on December 17.
