West Moreton Anglican College acknowledges the Yugara people as the First Nation custodians of the land on where our College stands.
For thousands of years the Yugara people have gathered on this country, to share knowledge, stories and teachings.
Tonight, as has happened in the past to this moment and will continue, people have gathered to share a story. A modern story told in our way. We will do this through movement and songs, continuing a legacy of practice.
To the First Nation custodians of Tulmur, Ipswich, we pay respects to your language, lores, customs, creation stories, culture and traditions.
We pay tribute to Elders: past, present and to be.
Welcome from the Principal
Welcome to WestMAC’s production of The Addams Family!
We are thrilled to have you join us for an evening of unforgettable performances. This production is a testament to the creativity and dedication of our students and staff, who have poured their hearts into bringing these beloved characters to life. We hope you enjoy every moment of this spooky and spectacular show.
Putting on a production of this scale requires immense effort and collaboration. Our talented students have spent countless hours rehearsing, perfecting their roles and working together as a team. Behind the scenes, our dedicated staff, parents and volunteers have been tirelessly supporting them, from designing sets and costumes to managing the technical aspects of the performance. It has truly been a collective effort, and I am incredibly proud.
Thank you for your continued support of the College’s Arts Program. Your presence here tonight means the world to us and to our students.
We hope you leave with wonderful memories. Enjoy the show!
Mr Andrew Peach
From the Director
Welcome to our production of The Addams Family. The moment we first heard that iconic theme tune, we knew we were going to create something both hilariously dark and delightfully heartfelt.
This show, at its core, is about the chaos and joy that happens when two very different families collide, one traditionally quirky and macabre, the other uptight and “normal”. And in the middle of it all is young love, awkward dinner conversations, and the all-too-relatable struggle of letting go and growing up.
Directing this ghoulish cast has been an absolute joy. The characters of The Addams Family are big, bold and often outrageous (much like our students!), but beneath the surface, they each carry a truth about love, identity and acceptance. Our students have worked incredibly hard to find those truths, while also embracing the over-the-top humour and gothic charm the show is known for. It’s been wonderful to watch them lean into the physicality, timing and musicality that this production demands.
One of the central themes of The Addams Family is the idea that we all carry a bit of the weird and wonderful inside us, and that’s something to be celebrated, not hidden. Whether you’re a Morticia, a Gomez, or maybe even a Fester at heart, there’s room for you at the WestMAC table. Our goal with this production was to bring that sense of belonging to the forefront, alongside the laughs, the ghoulish gags and a whole lot of Full Disclosure.
This production wouldn’t have come to life without the dedication of our creative team, backstage crew, musicians and, of course, the incredible cast. Their commitment, creativity and courage to take risks have made this a show to remember.
Thank you for joining us tonight. We hope you laugh, cry and maybe even see your own family in the oddball Addams’. After all, what is “normal,” anyway? Enjoy the show!
Ms Cassie Hoiberg
From the Musical Director
Over the last two decades, WestMAC has established a reputation for presenting high quality musicals with professional production and performance standards. Part of maintaining that reputation is choosing musicals that offer opportunities for our student performers to shine, with enough challenge to stretch them and provide them with a rewarding experience. Anyone familiar with the 1960s TV series, The Addams Family, would know the distinctive opening theme; a rising four-note motif played on the harpsichord, repeated in sequence and interspersed with finger snaps.
Over the decades it has become ubiquitous, turning up in the most unexpected places, even Twenty-20 cricket matches. However, you would be mistaken to think that is all there is to the music of Andrew Lippa’s musical. This show is a treasure trove of musical riches, encompassing an extraordinary range of styles from vaudeville to rock, all with a heavy dose of Latin influence.
See if you can spot the references to Debussy’s Claire de Lune and Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess
This makes for a highly engaging and entertaining show, but also for some significant challenges for our young performers. The vocal ranges are extreme, the harmonies are complex and the rhythms are highly syncopated with frequent changes of tempo and meter. All of this adds up to exactly the right vehicle to showcase the performance skills of our fantastic young cast.
Our highly talented and collaborative production team has worked tirelessly to ensure that the students are as well prepared as they can be.
So, welcome to The Addams Family. I am confident that this production will entertain you and continue the tradition of fantastic WestMAC musicals.
Mr Neil Flottmann
From the Choreographer
Choreographing The Addams Family has been an incredibly rewarding and creatively fulfilling experience. From the very beginning, our talented students at WestMAC have approached every rehearsal with energy, enthusiasm and a willingness to dive headfirst into the weird, wonderful world of the Addams. They embraced our most creative, and at times completely insane ideas with a smile, giving their all to bring this production to life. It’s been a fantastic opportunity to experiment with a range of dance genres and styles, blending them with the dark, eerie, and almost otherworldly movements that define The Addams Family’s unique charm.
Collaborating with Cassie Hoiberg and Tobey Ogilvie on several pieces added great depth and fun to the process and working alongside Neil Flottmann allowed us to ensure the choreography enhanced the musical performances. I’m extremely proud of the final result; this production is a true testament to the creativity, dedication and outstanding talent of our WestMAC students.
