President’s Message

I

wish to express my personal appreciation on behalf of the entire Western New England University community for your generosity during the last fiscal year (July 1, 2016-June 30, 2017). It is a privilege to lead an institution that is composed of not only passionate and energetic students, faculty, and staff, but also of dedicated alumni and friends who care about this University and invest in its future. Our donors have helped us strengthen the University’s world-class programs so that our students are well prepared to excel in the classroom and in their careers. During the last fiscal year, nearly 3,000 donors made gifts to the University, enabling us to enhance our efforts to make the student experience the best it can be. Your support has been instrumental in our remarkable progress and growth. Our rise in both quality and reputation over the years was recently recognized by the Colleges of Distinction guidebook, which noted our excellence in four important areas: Engaged Students, Great Teaching, Vibrant Communities, and Successful Outcomes. Our benefactors also help us open doors for students who otherwise could not attend our University. It is imperative that we make a Western New England University education as affordable as possible for all students, including those whose financial circumstances would never permit them to enroll. That is why financial aid remains a top priority, and we have been responding assertively to this need, providing more than $47 million of our own funds in grant aid this past fiscal year. We now have nearly 250 named scholarships, and thanks to your donations we are creating many new scholarships. Endowed scholarships are important to our financial aid program and are great ways for donors to make a difference in the lives of students, but we are also focusing on creating additional annual scholarships. Scholarships are vital tools in helping ease the financial burden on students. As we approach our Centennial celebration in 2019, growing financial aid and scholarships is one of our key directives propelling us into our second century. Our other priorities are boosting academic quality and experience, enhancing student life and learning, and strengthening the President’s Innovation Fund—a portion of the University’s annual fund that provides a channel for donors to support innovative programs and projects that foster transformative learning. For example, often students leave campus during the summer months to work and save money for the following year’s tuition, and in doing so they pass up research opportunities on campus. Through the President’s Innovation Fund, students can engage in a research project with a faculty member, much like an internship. Building student résumés with experiences like these allow them to stand out in a candidate pool when they are ready to enter the workforce after graduation. Your gifts are providing unprecedented opportunities for our students. Thank you for playing an important role in the advancement of Western New England University. We have achieved so much because of you, and with your help we look forward to an even brighter future.

Sincerely,

Anthony S. Caprio

DUAL HONORS

Bruce ’83/G’90 and Lisa’83/G’90 Bachmann certainly didn’t forget their Western New England University roots after they graduated. They have been strong and longtime supporters of Golden Bear athletics, which was recognized with their induction into the Downes Athletic Hall of Fame last September. They also recently created the Bachmann Family Annual Scholarship to support students in the Colleges of Business and Engineering. Back in the late 1970s, when they were students at West Springfield High School, Lisa and Bruce were high school sweethearts who wanted to attend a quality college that would give them a practical education to prepare them for their careers—along with the opportunity to participate in athletics—and Western New England certainly delivered. They were so impressed with their education here that they both ended up returning to campus to earn graduate degrees. “Our undergraduate and graduate degrees provided a foundation of knowledge to draw upon throughout our careers,” said Bruce. “Western New England holds a special place in our hearts.” When President Anthony S. Caprio introduced them at their induction into the Downes Athletic Hall of Fame, he said, “Their dedication to the betterment of women’s athletics at Western New England has resulted in a program that is energized and successful. They were instrumental in the establishment of the Women’s Athletics Alumnae Council, which connects female athletics alumnae with current student-athletes. Their leadership and support of the Flynn Family Golden Bear Pavilion helped bring the University state-of-the art locker rooms for the University’s outdoor teams.” Lisa and Bruce have also been loyal supporters

of the Golden Bear Club and the Athletic Department Golf Tournament. Lisa, a basketball and softball player as an undergraduate, majored in accounting and came back to the University to earn her MBA. She is executive vice president and chief merchandising and operating officer for Big Lots, Inc., based in Columbus, OH. Lisa was the Commencement Speaker at the 2016 Graduate Commencement, where she was awarded the President’s Medallion, an honor that recognizes men and women who are worthy of emulation by all, particularly by our students at the University. Bruce, who played Golden Bear hockey, earned his industrial engineering degree and his MBA at Western New England. He had a successful career as well and retired from industry in 2007 to pursue other interests. Both remember specific aspects of their education that have been crucial to their success. “While many classes taught us the ‘technical’ skills of our major, I most enjoyed the classes that brought real life business experiences to the students,” said Lisa. “I really enjoyed my advanced marketing class, where we built a marketing plan for a local company to utilize in its business.” Pivotal to her career in retail was her internship with Women’s Specialty Retailing

Group (WSRG—best known as Casual Corner). “Not only did I receive firsthand business experience, it also led to my career in retail as I spent 15 years with WSRG,” she said. Bruce has special memories of Dr. Richard Grabiec, now assistant dean of the College of Engineering, who “enjoyed teaching and interacting with students. Which exemplified the caring, engaging teaching approach shared by many professors at Western New England,” he said. Lisa and Bruce established the Bachmann Family Annual Scholarship because they feel financial aid is important, pointing out that the cost of college is rising faster than salaries— and that both of them were beneficiaries of financial aid and scholarships. “I was fortunate to have had scholarships available to me to help offset some of the costs of my education,” said Lisa. “It was essential to affording college. My path would have been very different from where I am today if financial aid and scholarships were not available to me. I am very grateful for the support I received and Bruce and I want to be able to help other students who are faced with the same financial challenges we had.” The couple has certainly shown their appreciation for their education. And as for Blue & Gold pride, “few show their true school colors more than these two alumni,” said President Caprio. wne.edu | 3

Scholarships:

THE GIFT OF OPPORTUNITY

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Scholarships provide invaluable financial assistance to students so that they can attain their educational and career goals without taking on high levels of debt. More than 98% of Western New England University students require some form of financial aid, including Sarita Manigat and Stephanie Kile.

Sarita Manigat “My scholarship aid is the reason I was able to attend law school,” says Sarita Manigat a third-year Law student. “I don’t think I would be here without this financial support.” Among the scholarships Sarita has received are the Levi/Seiden Endowed Scholarship, established by a gift from The I.W. Foundation at the suggestion of Mark D. Levi L’76, the Klak Sisters Endowed Scholarship, established by former University employee Helen A. Klak, and the Joanne Grummel Endowed Memorial Scholarship established by friends and family. Several years ago, Sarita decided to pursue a legal career because she has a background in non-profits and thought a law degree would broaden the impact she can make on the lives of others. “I chose Western New England University because the School of Law has a strong connection to the community, is very inclusive and open, and has wonderful experiential learning opportunities,” she says. Sarita, who was born in Haiti and grew up in Boston, earned her B.A. in French Language and Literature at Boston College and her Master of Public Administration at Georgia State University. Her past non-profit positions include being a substitute ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) teacher for the Mattapan Family Service Center in Boston. She was also a research/program assistant for AmeriCorps VISTA in East Central Iowa, where she worked on hunger issues in Linn County. Prior to coming to the School of Law, Sarita was a small business consultant for the Peace Corps in Kandi, a town in the West African nation of Benin. In Kandi she taught business management and English to high school students and, among other duties, cultivated partnerships with such entities as the Darien Book Aid Plan (which donates books), 4 | President’s Report 2016-2017

as well as with the U.S. Embassy to support a library project. She feels the School of Law will help her career in non-profits because of the “hands-on” experience she gets. “I have really appreciated the opportunities that the University has provided for direct learning,” she says. Sarita has participated in two clinics: the Legal Services Clinic and the International Human Rights Clinic. “The Legal Services Clinic has been particularly wonderful for getting direct client and court experiences,” she says. Indeed, Sarita points out that being a practicing lawyer doesn’t necessarily mean working at a private company or a big law firm. “There are countless opportunities to work with underserved populations and for the public good using a law degree—for example, through legal aid, or at organizations such as the ACLU,” she says. Her other activities include being on the Western New England Law Review staff and

clerking for the Town of Agawam’s Law Department. “Law Review requires a significant time commitment, but I have learned a lot about research and writing for legal academic purposes, and strong writing skills are always helpful in the legal field,” she says. Obviously, so far Sarita has enjoyed a fulfilling Law School experience, and the faculty has played a large role in her success story. “The professors are smart, engaging, and invested in the students,” she says. “Overall, I think this school was a good choice for me.” And she says scholarship assistance helped make it happen. What would she say to any donor considering establishing or contributing to a scholarship? “For many students, scholarships make all the difference in the world,” she says. “They open new doors for many people who are trying to make life changes. Scholarships provide opportunities for educational and career achievements for a lot of students.”

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Stephanie Kile Stephanie Kile, a junior majoring in Accounting and Finance, says her scholarships have enabled her to excel at Western New England University because she can concentrate on her studies and not have the distraction of worrying about how she is going to pay for tuition. “I can put my education and experiences here first,” she says. The native of Palmer, MA is a recipient of the Kevin S. Delbridge Endowed Scholarship, named for a University Trustee and one of the institution’s most prolific donors. She’s also a recipient of the Trustee Scholarship and the Provost Scholar Award. Stephanie is certainly making the most of her education. At present, she is an intern at Complete Payroll Solutions in Springfield. Last year, she took part in the Sophomore Experience Abroad program at Richmond, the American University in London. “It was a oncein-a-lifetime experience,” she says. “I have to thank the professors who came from Western New England University to teach us accelerated courses, aiding and enhancing our time abroad by also including excursions that I might not have otherwise taken the time to visit.” Studying abroad, she says, was the best decision she ever made for herself to learn and grow not only as a student, but also as a person. “Richmond was a great school that allowed me to meet a diverse group of people and to be involved in a community that had people from all over the world.” Stephanie also took advantage of her time off in London to travel throughout Europe, visiting France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Denmark, and Spain. “The weekend travels I did really enhanced my experience abroad because I got to see so much in such a small amount of time.” Stephanie also credits her cocurricular activities with adding a huge value to her

education. As a part of the Class of 2019 Council she has helped plan events such as Midnight Madness. “This provides me with a chance to be involved with my class and the University as a whole, and also to be a leader and a role model to other students in my class as someone who brings everyone together and makes our experiences enjoyable,” she says. She is also a member of the Dance Team. “Midnight Madness was one of my favorite experiences because I was part of it with both the Council and the Dance Team,” she says. Western New England University was the first college campus Stephanie toured before her senior year of high school. “I visited a few others, sent out my applications, received my acceptances, and then when it came down

to decide I went with my gut instinct that Western New England University was the most welcoming campus, had the best programs for me, and a community I could fit into and excel in,” she says. “I was proven right. My education has been so great. The connections I’ve been able to make with my professors and the staff have helped me so much, and I’ve been granted so many opportunities in internships and setting up a career for myself after I graduate.” Also factoring in her college decision were her scholarships. “I’m grateful that the donors of the scholarships see potential in me as a student and want to increase my success. At Western New England University I see endless opportunities for my future.”

University Innovation Fellows:

AGENTS OF CHANGE In 2016, Benjamin Kennedy, Katie Jordan and Jonathan Young were named University Innovation Fellows by the National Center for Engineering Pathways to Innovation, which is funded by the National Science Foundation. The Fellows are working to ensure that their peers gain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to compete in the economy of the future and make a positive impact on the world. For Benjamin Kennedy, a senior Electrical Engineering major, being named a University Innovation Fellow has been a transformative experience. “I have learned how to fundamentally alter my mindset,” he says. “The program has taught me to always be an innovator—and that doesn’t just mean inventing a new product. It means making life better in any way—and anywhere I can.” The students completed six weeks of training on campus, as well as further training at Stanford University, where they learned how to work effectively in groups. Funding for travel, training, and other projects by the Fellows was provided through a generous grant from the Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network. By helping students combine innovative and entrepreneurial thinking skills, the Fellows are trying to create lasting change on campus that benefits all of society. One of their first initiatives they took was to host pop-up classes held outside the College of Engineering’s formal curriculum. This instruction included teaching freshmen engineering students how to use laboratory equipment. “These skills, like soldering, using the Dremel rotary tool, the belt sander, and drills—and a few other skills—aren’t always taught in the classroom, so we wanted to give students the opportunity to learn how to confidently use the equipment,” says Katie Jordan, a senior majoring in Biomedical Engineering. According to Michael Rust, associate professor of Biomedical Engineering, the Fellows are well-suited to create opportunities for students to engage in innovation, entrepreneurship, and creative thought. Dr. Rust has worked with Katie in several courses he teaches, including Global Health and Technology, in which they spent almost two 6 | President’s Report 2016-2017

weeks in Guatemala looking at the country’s healthcare challenges. “She is a great example of an engineer who is not only taking a deep look at the problems facing our world, but also is already getting involved in trying to make a difference,” he says. “This combination of technical skills and global thinking, coupled with an action-based mindset, is how the University Innovation Fellows can create lasting change on campus that benefits all of society.”

Indeed, Dr. Rust points out that the Fellows—especially Mechanical Engineering major Jonathan Young—have also been studying how an “innovation space” might fit on campus. “This is music to my ears,” says Dr. Rust, “as we’ve already seen what creative ideas can be generated though our existing resources on campus, leading to startup ventures and companies such as AnyCafé and New England Breath Technologies.”

Design and Innovation from Day One Innovation at Western New England University’s College of Engineering starts for students on the first day of the Introduction to Engineering course, where students are taught to approach problems not only through the eyes of an engineer, but also to apply what they’ve learned through hands-on projects and formal presentations. The team-based learning established in the College’s first year program carries through to such cross-disciplinary courses as Product Innovation and Development that group together engineering and business students to invent and market new products. This innovation and entrepreneurship environment on campus has resulted in such products as a coffee mug that conveniently brews coffee inside the mug anytime, anywhere. The portable coffee brewer was developed by AnyCafé, a startup company that was formed by five students and grew out of a program sponsored by Valley Venture Mentors. Another company, New England Breath Technologies, was co-founded by Dr. Rust and Ronny Priefer, professor of Medicinal Chemistry. They are developing the first glucose monitor that uses breath instead of blood for pain-free readings.
