BUTTERFLIES AND BIOLOGY

she/her/hers

HOMETOWN: HATFIELD, MA

MAJOR: BIOLOGY

I love working in a butterfly conservatory.

To me, animals and humans form one big family. We learn so much about animals, birds, and monkeys — and it’s fascinating how those lessons can be applied to ourselves as well.

During my junior year of high school, we visited the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, an experience that

deeply ignited my passion for the life sciences. Initially, I considered fields like marine biology, oceanography, zoology, or ecology. Eventually, I chose to pursue biology here because I realized there was so much more to learn beyond what high school offered. The variety of classes, especially in biology electives, microbiology, and genetics, has significantly broadened my understanding and heightened my interest in laboratory-based sciences.

My journey at Western New England University has been transformative, bolstering both my personal confidence and my confidence in my future career prospects. The education I’ve received has opened up a myriad of potential paths for my career. I feel thoroughly prepared for any direction my career might take, thanks to my experiences here.

SAE Baja Club Revving Up Innovation

At the heart of Western New England University’s commitment to experiential learning lies the SAE Baja Club, a dynamic student organization where design, engineering, and business acumen converge in the creation of custom-built, off-road vehicles. This club not only challenges students to push the boundaries of automotive design but also prepares them for the rigors of the professional world through hands-on experience and competition.

The Drive Behind Baja Club

“The SAE Baja Club exemplifies the spirit of innovation and hands-on learning that defines the educational experience at Western New England University,” President Johnson remarks. His praise for the club underscores its role as a beacon of experiential education within the College of Engineering, highlighting the club’s contribution to preparing students for success in advanced fields such as welding.

“Witnessing the dedication and creativity of our students as they design, build, and compete with their off-road vehicles is inspiring,” he adds, acknowledging the club’s achievements and the anticipation for its continued excellence on the national stage.

Conner Bogle, the club’s treasurer and director of outreach, shares his enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing the broad scope of skills members gain. “Being part of the Baja Club has been an incredible journey. It’s not just about constructing a vehicle; it’s about cultivating skills that will undoubtedly shape our future careers,” Bogle states.

The Baja SAE series, organized by SAE International, is a rigorous test of student engineering teams worldwide, requiring them to design, build, and race off-road vehicles through a series of static and dynamic events. This competition is a comprehensive test of their ability to manage real-life demands and priorities, mirroring the challenges faced in professional engineering roles.

Students involved in the SAE Baja Club at WNE not only gain invaluable experience in vehicle design and manufacturing but also learn to navigate business presentations and team dynamics. This prepares them for a successful career in engineering, blending technical skills with the ability to work collaboratively and think creatively.

he/him/his

HOMETOWN:LAKE ELSINORE, CA

MAJOR: POLITICAL SCIENCE

At Western New England University, the Political Science program is a catalyst for change, propelling students like Grant Manley ‘24 into meaningful careers. Grant’s story is a powerful testament to how WNE transforms aspirations into achievements, blending academic rigor with real-world experiences.

Grant was drawn to WNE’s vibrant community from his first campus visit during Golden Bear for a Day, an experience that ignited his passion for involvement. His journey has been characterized by a deep dive into political theory and hands-on practice. “This perspective gave me a new look at the problems developing countries face,” Grant says of his enlightening course on the Politics of Developing Societies, showcasing the program’s commitment to fostering a global perspective.

Beyond the classroom, Grant’s initiative shines. He’s been a leader in the Peer Advising program and founded Students Concerned About Sustainability, reflecting his drive to effect change. “I wanted to pay my positive experience forward to future Golden Bears,” he shares, embodying the leadership and community spirit nurtured at WNE.

Grant’s academic journey has been enriched by internships that have placed him at the heart of American politics, including a pivotal stint in

Washington D.C. “I’ve seen the removal of Speaker McCarthy, Hamas’s attack on Israel, and the government avoid shutdown at the eleventh hour,” Grant shares, his experiences providing a real-world backdrop to his studies.

As Grant looks to the future, his ambitions in public service are clear. “I do see myself working as a public servant in the realm of American politics, at least throughout my twenties,” he projects, his path illuminated by the comprehensive education and experiences at WNE.

Grant’s story is more than inspirational — it’s a roadmap for students aspiring to make a difference through politics. His journey from a curious visitor to a proactive participant in the political field exemplifies the transformative power of the WNE Political Science program.

This could be you. At WNE, we’re not just preparing students for careers; we’re shaping the future leaders of our world. Grant’s journey is an invitation to envision what your future could look like — a future where you, too, can make a profound impact.

In a dazzling display of skill, determination, and teamwork, both our women’s ice hockey and basketball teams claimed their CCC titles, sending waves of excitement across Golden Bear Nation.

Ice Hockey: A Historic Victory on Home Ice

The WNE women’s ice hockey team, in a thrilling face-off against Curry College, clinched their first-ever CCC Championship with a victorious 5-3 score. This monumental win, achieved in just the third year since the team’s formation, is a testament to their hard work, unity, and the visionary leadership of Head Coach Katie Zimmerman. Reflecting on this achievement, Coach Zimmerman shared, “Winning the CCC championship on home ice was an unforgettable experience. It’s a testament to the resilience and spirit of our players. This victory is for everyone who believes in us — the first chapter in our history-making journey to the NCAA national tournament.”

Basketball: A Nail-Biting Clinch to the Championship

Not to be outdone, the WNE women’s basketball team seized the CCC title in a nail-biting match against the

University of New England, with a final score of 50-49. This triumph marks their return to the CCC pinnacle for the first time since the 2018-2019 season and propels them into the NCAA Championships, a feat last achieved in the 2019-2020 season. Coach Nicole Chaszar praised her team’s collective effort, highlighting their resilience in overcoming season-long adversity. “This championship was a total team effort. Our players showed incredible dedication and tenacity, embodying the true spirit of Golden Bears,” stated Chaszar.

Both teams’ victories underscore the exceptional talent, dedication, and spirit of our student-athletes, who excel not only in their sports but also in leadership, academics, and community engagement. As we celebrate these historic wins, we’re reminded of the dynamic and supportive environment at WNE that fosters excellence both on and off the field.

Golden Bear Nation is buzzing with anticipation as our champions prepare for their respective NCAA tournaments. These achievements are a beacon of inspiration for future generations of WNE athletes, proving that with passion, teamwork, and determination, Golden Bears always shine brightest.

Exploring Psychology Jayla Johnson ‘26

she/her/hers

HOMETOWN: MERIDEN, CT

MAJOR: PSYCHOLOGY

Jayla Johnson ‘26, a rising star in the Psychology program at WNE, embodies the spirit of discovery and growth that defines the WNE experience. From her initial step onto campus, Jayla knew she found a place where her curiosity about the human psyche could flourish. “The best part of being a Psychology major is getting the opportunity to learn how and why people behave the way they do,” she enthusiastically shares, encapsulating the essence of her academic pursuit.

WNE’s intimate environment, reminiscent of her small high school, was a key factor in Jayla’s choice for higher education. She elaborates, “I chose WNE for my education because I came from a small high school and did not want to attend a large university ... I knew that the size of WNE would be perfect for me.”

Jayla’s educational journey has been significantly shaped by influential classes and mentors. She recalls one of her most impactful experiences, “One of my most influential classes was History 111, U.S. History to 1877, with Professor Beagle,” highlighting how this course deepened her appreciation for history and her own heritage.

Central to Jayla’s academic and personal growth is Professor Alison Castellano from the Psychology Department. Jayla praises her mentor’s

dedication, saying, “She is inspiring because she always puts her students first and pushes us to do our best ... I could not imagine life at WNE without her.”

Beyond academics, Jayla has immersed herself in campus life through her involvement in clubs. As treasurer of the Psychology Club and a manager of the Golden Steppas step team, she has embraced leadership roles that contribute to her growth and the community. Her involvement is a testament to her commitment to making a positive impact, with events like the Psychology Club’s Suicide Prevention Awareness 5k.

Reflecting on her future, Jayla’s aspirations have evolved, showcasing the versatility of a Psychology degree from WNE. “When I began college, I was set on eventually becoming a clinical psychologist. Now, I am also considering being a therapist or a behavioral analyst,” she muses, illustrating the broad spectrum of opportunities her education has opened up for her.

Jayla Johnson’s story is a vibrant example of how WNE’s Psychology program nurtures students’ passions, guiding them towards a future filled with potential and purpose. Her journey, marked by insightful learning, mentorship, and active campus involvement, paints a vivid picture of the rewarding path that lies ahead for students at WNE. –Cole Strzelecki

ANTHONY CAVALLO ‘23

“Over the course of our time here, we were able to visit historic sites and witness the evolution of civilization.

Not only was the culture, education, and history eye-opening, but the bonds and friendships made among classmates are truly remarkable. At the start of the trip, we were a group of 17 students who were struggling to remember each other’s names. As I write this only 11 days in, I can say that I have established a new family that will last a lifetime. These are memories we all will cherish for years to come.”

MACKENZIE DOUGLAS ‘23

SARAH DUBUQUE ‘24

“This trip was a truly life-changing experience, opening my eyes to a different culture and language, something that I am privileged to be able to say so early in my life.

I am proud to represent Western New England University here in Sorrento. Along with the breathtaking site visits, studying at the Sant’Anna Institute here in Sorrento has been a highlight of this trip. Meeting students and professors from all over the world and sharing stories of our travels here in Italy, and hearing their stories, has been remarkable.”

“Being able to explore and study in a new country is a highly rewarding experience. Many do not know how different the United States is from other countries and do not have the chance to travel abroad. Being able to study abroad while attending WNE is such a special experience because I was able to explore the world, meet lifelong friends, and earn academic credits as well. As a commuter, this trip has allowed me to get out of my comfort zone, get involved, and try something new.

I will be eternally grateful for this opportunity and will remember it for the rest of my life.”

From Classroom to Cosmos: Shaping the Future at SpaceX Alumni Spotlight

From WNE to the forefront of aerospace innovation, Nick Massa ‘13 has made leaps that most can only dream of. As a global supply manager at SpaceX, Nick’s work transcends the conventional boundaries of his field, playing a pivotal role in projects that are literally out of this world.

Nick’s journey at SpaceX is a testament to the power of ambition fused with education. At the core of his work are private satellite projects, including critical missions to bolster secure communications for government and military operations. While details of his endeavors tread into classified territory, the impact of his contributions is immense, safeguarding the channels that protect our homeland security.

Beyond the cloak-and-dagger aspects of his role, Nick has been instrumental in SpaceX’s StarLink initiative. This ambitious project aims to blanket the globe with broadband internet, targeting underserved communities to bridge the digital divide. StarLink’s vision of affordable, accessible internet is not just about connectivity; it’s about opening doors to opportunities for millions worldwide.

Managing the intricate web of supply chains for satellite components, from intricate electronics to machine parts, Nick ensures the lifeblood of SpaceX’s projects flows uninterrupted. His role is crucial; a hiccup in sourcing materials or a delay in delivery can jeopardize missions that are vital to both national security and global connectivity.

Nick’s challenges are not for the faint-hearted. The volatility in the availability and pricing of precious metals, essential for satellite construction, demands a strategic pivot in supply chain management. Under his stewardship, SpaceX now takes a more hands-on approach in securing raw materials well in advance, a move that underscores the company’s adaptability and foresight.

“Because the lead times of raw materials have been so prone to fluctuation and increases in price, we now procure the material directly in advance and put it on the shelf for future use,” Nick explains. This proactive strategy not only stabilizes costs but also ensures SpaceX stays ahead in the relentless pace of aerospace innovation.

Nick’s narrative is more than a success story; it’s a beacon for current and future WNE students. His path from a university graduate to a key player at SpaceX illustrates the limitless possibilities that arise from marrying dedication with education. At SpaceX, Nick and his team continuously push the envelope, embodying a culture of relentless innovation and resilience.

In a space where competitors are eager to catch up, SpaceX’s ethos of constant reinvention keeps it several steps ahead. “That is the culture of SpaceX. People do try to steal our technology, so the way we combat that is to keep innovating so fast and so often that they cannot keep up with us,” Nick states, highlighting the drive for perpetual progress.

Nick Massa’s work at SpaceX is a compelling reminder of where a WNE education can take you — sometimes, to the stars and beyond. His achievements not only underscore the importance of strategic foresight in supply management but also reflect the broader impact of his contributions on global communication and security.

TOGETHER in Partnership Parent Connections

Don’t Worry, Mom and Dad We’ve Got This!

Seeing your teenager leave the nest for the first time may be a brand-new experience for you. It may even be a challenging one, and that’s natural.

But at Western New England University, it’s not new for us. It’s part of what we do. For over a century, we’ve welcomed countless students into our campus family and ensured that they are well taken care of from day one. Over time, WNE will become your child’s home away from home, and our hope is for you, as a parent, to feel comfortable sending them to us.

We’re Intentionally Small and Intensely Personal

On our campus, your student won’t just be a number or a face in the crowd. They will be a valued member of our community from the moment they step foot on campus, and they’ll have many ways to feel connected to the WNE spirit.

At WNE, your children are our priority. You can rest assured that they are in good hands on our campus, among like-minded peers and professionals trained to provide a safe, healthy, and happy college experience.

Summer Orientation (SOAR)

Summer Orientation (SOAR) is a series of on-campus sessions with a companion parent/guardian program where we officially welcome students to our learning community. This unique WNE tradition provides a preview of life as a first-year Golden Bear and an overview of important resources on campus. Your student will receive tips on how to make a smooth transition to life as a WNE college student and get to know their fellow classmates!

Clubs and Organizations

Once the school year begins, students will be able to choose from more than 70 clubs and organizations on campus, bringing together like-minded peers through dozens of recreational, academic, and cultural interests.

Comprehensive Advising

WNE’s distinctive academic advising program ensures that your child has a team of advisors looking out for their academic and personal well-being from day one.

Our Faculty and University Advisors support students in exploring majors and minors, meeting curriculum and major requirements, and navigating career and internship options.

To make the transition to college an even better experience, our Peer Advisors are eager to help. These seasoned Golden Bears coach each first-year student in the formation of a personal success plan that establishes clear direction and purpose.

Our goal is to help all students succeed — not only now, in college, but in whatever their future has in store.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, we are here to support you, too.

We Support Students’ Health and Wellness

The Center for Health and Well-Being is one of the most comprehensive facilities of its kind in the region and offers both medical services and educational programs to promote a healthy community. We pride ourselves on the efficient, comprehensive, confidential healthcare we provide and the respect we assign our patients.

Open all year both in person and via telemedicine when necessary, the Center for Health and Well-Being also has a healthcare provider on call for urgent health concerns after hours.

We Want You to Be Involved, Too!

When you drop your child off on move-in day, that isn’t the end of your involvement in their college lives. At Western New England University, we believe that families often make a difference in a student’s college experience. That is why all parents of full-time undergraduates are members of the Parents Association, which is directed by parent representatives with the advice and assistance of the Vice President of Student Life and the Director for Operations and Outreach.

The Center for Health and Well-Being is structured much like an urgent care center and staffed by board-certified nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Services include physical exams; immunizations; orthopedics; women’s health; STD testing; rapid strep, mono, pregnancy, flu, COVID-19, and urine testing; small surgical procedures; EKG and diagnostic testing; lab work; prescriptions; health education; and specialty referrals.

Mental health is a priority for us, and Counseling Services makes connecting with a counselor easy for students, with same-day appointments available for urgent needs. Our counselors are caring, licensed professionals who provide confidential help to students with personal, social, and educational concerns. A WNE counselor is always on call 24/7 for crisis situations.

Safety and Security is Our Business

WNE’s Department of Public Safety provides a full range of safety and crime-prevention services.

• 24 hour police patrols, surveillance cameras, and emergency phones throughout campus

• Fire and environmental safety efforts

• Medical first responders

• Security escorts

• Educational programs on topics such as alcohol and drug use, personal safety, and fire safety

• Rave Guardian app

• Bear, our WNE K9 comfort dog

• Community service officers who engage with the campus community and assist with service-related calls

• Access cards to residence halls, offices, and academic buildings

In short, we are a safe campus, and the primary concern of the Department of Public Safety is to keep it that way so that your student can focus on college life.

Program Spotlight

Unveiling the Mysteries with Forensic Science

Have you ever watched a crime drama and felt a thrill when the detective unveiled the crucial piece of evidence that solved the case? Ever imagined yourself in that lab coat, uncovering the truths hidden within a single strand of DNA or a mysterious powder? If so, then the forensic science programs at Western New England University are calling your name — but be warned, they’re not for the faint of heart.

Dive into Forensic Biology

At the heart of criminal justice, behind the flashing lights and detective badges, lies the real scene of action: the crime lab. This is where you, as a Forensic Biology major, come into play. Forget the classic cops and robbers; think more along the lines of pipettes, DNA sequences, and microscopes.

Forensic Biology is your ticket into the world of investigative science, where every biological clue is a piece of the puzzle in solving crimes. From analyzing fingerprints to decoding DNA, you’ll work hand in hand with law enforcement to convict the guilty and exonerate the innocent. It’s not just about the crimes of today; you’ll also help unlock mysteries of the past, from tracing human ancestry to tracking the evolution of diseases.

Your journey will be packed with hands-on laboratory experiences and professional internships, diving deep into the biology, chemistry, and ethics of criminal investigation. And yes, you’ll even stand in the courtroom, presenting evidence as an expert witness. It’s rigorous, demanding, and utterly fascinating.

Explore Forensic Chemistry

If the intersection of science and law intrigues you but you lean more towards the chemical mysteries, Forensic Chemistry might be your calling. This major propels you into the action-packed world of forensic science, where the application of chemistry to legal cases becomes your daily bread and butter.

Forensic Chemistry is all about the nitty-gritty of crime scene evidence, from drug residues to explosive compounds. Your role? To collect, preserve, analyze, and present this evidence, both in criminal investigations and civil cases. It’s a career path that demands accuracy, attention to detail, and a knack for solving puzzles — because sometimes, a single molecule can be the key to cracking a case wide open.

You’ll immerse yourself in a curriculum rich in biology and chemistry, mastering analytical methods and instrumentation analysis. Your classrooms? State-of-the-art laboratories where you’ll refine your skills in toxicology, crime scene processing, and scientific evidence. And like your Forensic Biology counterparts, you’ll take the stand in the courtroom, your expert testimony pivotal in the pursuit of justice.

Join the Ranks of Real-Life CSIs

At Western New England University, our Forensic Biology and Chemistry programs are more than majors; they’re your entry into a world where science meets justice. Here, you won’t just learn about the forensic sciences — you’ll live them, through every experiment, every analysis, and every courtroom testimony.

So, if you’re ready to step into a career that’s as challenging as it is rewarding, where you can make a real difference in the world of criminal justice, then it’s time to consider a path in forensic science. Remember, it’s not for the faint of heart — but then again, neither are you.
