OF ALL THE MANY TRADITIONS established at Western New England University, Homecoming Weekend and all the events and activities that have developed over the years capture so well and so fully the family atmosphere that characterizes our institution. Alumni convey time and time again the sense of community they experienced here. The environment of a caring faculty and staff and the typically small class sizes have always appealed to students at our University.

Indeed, Homecoming is a time for us to celebrate school spirit and to reconnect—to remember the past, reflect on the present, and also to envision what the University will become. Amid the plethora of Homecoming festivities this past fall, alumni enjoyed the opportunity to tour our two latest building projects: the recently opened Frances and Norman Cohen Trading Room and Financial Center, as well as the ongoing Sleith Hall expansion and renovation. These projects, which you will read about in these pages, attest to our commitment to offering students the best private university experience possible.

At present, we are raising funds for the Sleith Hall project related entirely to engineering. The Sleith Hall renovation and addition is an outstanding opportunity to accelerate the momentum of the important activities taking place in the building: innovative teaching and excellent learning, and cutting-edge research. New and renovated facilities are just part of our commitment to provide a premier learning environment. The expanded and revitalized Sleith Hall will house our recently created Civil and Environmental Engineering programs and the newly approved Computer Engineering major.

By enhancing our academic programs and facilities—and by maintaining our focus on the individual student—we remain a student-centered institution that emphasizes the personal connections between faculty and learners, and the result is a campus on which the best features of a university intersect with the best characteristics of a small college. As one of only a handful of institutions in the country with fewer than 5,000 students— and yet having the highest levels of accreditation in business, engineering, law, and social work (and soon pharmacy)—Western New England University provides students with the educational opportunities usually offered only at much larger institutions.

an Inspiring Learning Environment SLEITH HALL PROJECT ENTERS PHASE II ESIgN ANd INNovATIoN FRoM day one is the philosophy of the College of Engineering. From the first day on campus to their capstone Senior design Project, undergraduate students are encouraged to be innovative and entrepreneurial. The two-phase $12.8 million renovation and expansion to Sleith Hall is scheduled to be completed for fall 2014. With that achievement, Western New England University’s undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral engineering students will have an even greater capacity to apply their ingenuity to improve people’s lives.

Recent smart product concepts developed by freshmen include a window that adjusts its opening based on the weather, a dog door that only lets in your dog, and a backpack that alerts you if you forget your laptop.

SMART THINKING DRIVES NEW FIRST-YEAR CURRICULUM From cell phones to medical monitoring devices, “smart” devices are connecting us to our world in ways we never imagined. At the College of Engineering, our students dive into smart design in their freshman year. It’s an engaging and innovative first-year curriculum that sets the stage for an education that inspires lifelong entrepreneurial thinking.

“our students are learning to take an idea and turn it into reality,” says dr. Ronald Musiak, professor of Electrical Engineering and director of the Engineering Fundamentals program. “As they design and build their prototypes to compete against other freshman teams, they start to understand problem-solving, communication, and teamwork—all essential to their engineering careers.”

ENGINEERING: A POWERFUL ECONOMIC ENGINE In an economic downturn, invention and manufacturing can turn the tide. Not surprisingly, the economy has seen a strong interest in the tech sector, particularly in fields requiring engineering degrees. Thanks to the growth of its reputation for applied learning, the College of Engineering has seen enrollments rise at all levels. Undergraduate programs in Biomedical, Electrical, Industrial, and Mechanical Engineering have grown 46 percent since 2007. In 2012, the College introduced an undergraduate degree program in Civil Engineering, which also includes an Environmental Engineering concentration. The number of new students enrolling in engineering graduate programs has more than tripled since 2008-2009. And since its introduction in fall of 2012, the Phd in Engineering Management program now enrolls 11 students with 50 percent of its candidates coming from outside the U.S. “We have seen tremendous growth in enrollments,” says dr. Hossein Cheraghi, dean of the College of Engineering. “This fall we added five new members to our faculty, and are expected to add three new faculty next year. over the last five years, we’ve gone from about 300 to 500 students, including many international students from Asia and the Middle East, who are attracted to our strong advanced degree programs.”

TRUSTEES BRENNAN AND KITROSSER TAKE THE LEAD ON SLEITH HALL PROJECT GIFTS NIvERSITY TRUSTEES John Brennan ’71 and Steven Kitrosser ’66/g’70 have led fundraising efforts through their major gifts to the Sleith Hall project. While Phase I has been accomplished, they remind other alumni and friends that there is still much to be done to see the project through to its completion.

According to John, the expansion and renovation will not only provide space for the new Civil Engineering labs, but will also make our existing engineering labs “state-ofthe-art and give our students a better hands-on experience in the engineering field of their choice.” Beyond the direct benefits to engineering students, he says, “All of these improvements add to the appeal of the University.”

A member of the Engineering Hall of Fame, John was recently appointed to the University’s Board of Trustees.

He currently serves as president of Summit Company, LP, a privately held investment firm.

For many years, he has supported the College of Engineering with the establishment of the Brennan Family Endowed Scholarship for freshmen. He hopes his gift to the Sleith Hall project will inspire others to contribute what they can to complete Phase II or increase scholarship aid. “I would like to see any student who wants to pursue engineering to be able to do so and not be inhibited by a lack of funds,” says John. “If the student is willing to work hard to maintain a high level of performance, we should do what we can to provide him or her with the opportunity.”

John has a great appreciation for the University’s focus on small classes and personalized attention in making our graduates career ready. “I began my career at a small business that didn’t have the depth of resources that a large company has. I had to rely on the skills and knowledge acquired at Western New England to arrive at practical solutions for complex problems.” He adds, “It was also where I learned the importance of teamwork in solving problems.”

Like John, fellow entrepreneur Steven Kitrosser ’66/g’70 recognizes the need for students to have access to the most current technology used in industry.

“I spent the last 30 years in startups,” says Steve, who earned both a BS in Industrial Engineering and an MBA from Western New England. “our students need access to technology that is the latest and the greatest. The University has been at the forefront, and the updated facility

just adds to the learning experience and will give the students more opportunities to get involved in startups or existing companies.”

The former chairman of InPhase Technologies was inducted into the Engineering Hall of Fame in 2002 for his outstanding contributions to the computer data storage industry. Steve serves as chair of the Engineering Advisory Board and has established the Steven and Elaine Kitrosser Industrial Engineering Endowed Scholarship for freshmen Industrial Engineering majors.

“There are a lot of deserving students, especially in the field of engineering, who graduate and immediately contribute to society,” says Steve. “If everyone can give back, even in a small way, to help those students, it would be invaluable.”

Both men feel that educating engineers is critical to the U.S. remaining competitive in the world economy.

“We are the world leader in technology,” says John.

“If we are going to continue to improve our standard of living, then we must retain this advantage as well as return more manufacturing to the U.S. through advanced technologies.”

Nationwide, Steve says that there is nearly “100 percent employment” in the industry that has been growing steadily since he graduated in the sixties. That demand makes the need for modernized educational facilities such as Sleith Hall all the more important.

Steve would also like to see Western New England play a larger role in outreach to regional schools to plant the seeds for attracting more young women to our programs and future engineering careers.

“Nearly 60 percent of all engineering jobs today are being filled by women,” he says. “I think our real opportunity for growth is through promoting what makes this a great place for women to study engineering.”

For John, leading the Sleith Hall Project with a major gift is part of his responsibility to his alma mater and his chosen career.

“I believe that it is a fundamental obligation in a capitalistic society for those who achieve economic success to give back,” he says. “This can be in the form of support of medical research, the arts, education or ridding the world of disease or poverty. There are many ways this can be accomplished, but in almost all cases that involve improving the health and well-being of the world’s population—you will find engineers involved in the solution.”

John Brennan has spent much of his career as an entrepreneur.

Beyond his position as president of Summit Company, LP, he currently serves as consultant for Presedo, LLC, a startup developing a process to reduce the amount of energy used in the production of ethanol.

Prior to starting Summit Company, Brennan served as a consultant for Curtiss-Wright Corporation from 2010-2012. That relationship developed from a venture he began and later sold to the company. From 1997-2007, he was owner and president of Valve Systems and Controls (VSC), a distributor of valves, actuators, and valve control systems used by major contractors in the refining, chemical production, and paper industries in North and South America. After his first job at Bruno Machinery Corporation, he joined VSC’s New Jersey office, he transferred to Houston in 1978 and rose to become president in just over a decade. Brennan sold VSC to Curtiss-Wright Corporation and remained president for a transitional year. From 2008-10 he was the vice president and general manager of oil and gas systems of the Curtiss-Wright’s Flow Control Division, overseeing six business units.

—STEVEN KITROSSER ’66/G’70 While he may never officially retire, Steven Kitrosser most recently served as chairman of InPhase Technologies. The digital revolution was in its infancy when he launched his career at Digital Equipment Corp., a major employer in Springfield. Like the College of Engineering today, the company encouraged entrepreneurial thinking and Kitrosser was soon managing its burgeoning disk drive division in Colorado Springs, CO. After earning his MBA, he was recruited to Maxtor Corp. a start-up magnetic storage company headquartered in the Silicon Valley with facilities in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia. He went on to be named CEO of MaxOptics, a joint venture of Maxtor and Kobata Corp. of Japan. He found his greatest startup success with the launch of Quinta, serving as CEO of the venture, which was bought out within a year by its major investor, Seagate.

SLEITH HALL PROJECT PHASE II: BUILDING MOMENTUM

P A CULTURE OF COLLABORATION The team-based learning established in the First Year program carries through to such cross-disciplinary courses as Product Innovation and development that group together engineering and business students to invent and market new products.

Teamwork in Senior design Projects has resulted in groundbreaking inventions, patents, and award-winning papers and presentations. Last year’s class pursued research on such topics as a breathalyzer for blood sugar testing, a control system for a multi-fan hovering system, a sleep study device for the College of Pharmacy, and an acoustic gunfire locator and surveillance system.

Across campus, as the College of Pharmacy enters its third year, opportunities have arisen for exciting faculty collaborations. one of the most promising areas of research, spearheaded by dr. Bart Lipkens, professor of mechanical engineering; dr. Michael Rust, assistant professor of biomedical engineering; and dr. daniel Kennedy, assistant professor of pharmacology, and their students, involves the use of acoustics to separate lipids from red blood cells, a process that could reduce the risks of blood clots during cardiac surgery.

Biomedical Engineering was recently named number one in CNN/Money’s Best Jobs in America for careers with big growth, great pay, and satisfying work. For a preview of that work environment, our BME Labs will gain a simulated hospital suite as part of the department’s new facilities. “our Biomedical Engineering graduates will be involved with the design of diagnostic and therapeutic devices, and the new BME Hospital Suite simulates the clinical environment where these devices will be used,” says dr. Judy Cezeaux, chair of the department of Biomedical Engineering. “This environment will help us to further emphasize to our Biomedical Engineering students the importance of considering the needs of patients and clinicians in their designs.”

The department of Civil Engineering will have a specialized classroom and labs dedicated to the study of structures, transportation, and soil. These facilities represent an important step in the growth of this newest department at the University. david Loring ’85, senior project manager at Tighe & Bond, understands the nation’s critical need for civil engineers. david has been an active alum, serving on the College of Engineering Industry Advisory Board, and as a mentor, and guest speaker.

“The Civil Engineering program further expands the engineering educational opportunities provided by the College of Engineering at a time when our nation’s infrastructure is failing and public works personnel diminishing,” david says. “The development and training of the next generation of civil engineers is critical to the continued prosperity and quality of life enjoyed by all Americans.”

As the Sleith Hall project progresses, alumni and friends of the University are encouraged to stop in to walk the halls of this latest enhancement to the campus.

A longtime trustee and Engineering Hall of Famer, Ron Lalli ’61/g’67 was a recent speaker at the Entrepreneurship Success Stories series presented by the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Seeing the growth of the University and the latest transformation to Sleith Hall led him to reminisce about what it was like to be a student here just as the University was breaking ground on its very first building. At the close of his talk, he said, “Every time I come here, I am totally in awe of what this school has become.”

Whether you’re buying or renting textbooks or looking for that great University sweatshirt, we’ve got you covered.

REMEMBER THE DAYS of standing in long lines at the start of the school semester to buy books at the campus bookstore?

Standing in line or even the old process of buying books is now optional. Students now have the flexibility to order books ahead online and choose renting instead of buying.

“We’re looking for every opportunity to save students and families time and money when it comes to textbooks,” says Mark Crowther, director of the Blue & gold Campus Store. “on average, the cost of renting a textbook is half than that of buying, so the savings can be significant. Rental costs are also comparable to buying books at other online sites so students should consider all options. In this

economy, parents really appreciate every dollar they can save.”

Crowther says that half of all textbooks required at the University are eligible for rental. Renting constituted 32 percent of the Blue & gold’s textbook sales last semester, and students have the option of renting physical or digital textbooks. If renting textbooks, they may still buy the book at the end of the semester if they feel they want to keep it as a resource. digital rentals are offered by subscription, which ends when the course is over.

Purchasing used books also remains a popular cost-saver and the Blue & gold buys back textbooks even if they were purchased elsewhere. Just outside the store is a repository for used books for

students who want to donate to charitable organizations such as Wounded Warriors or Books for Africa.

College of Business Opens New Trading Room and Financial Center with Opening Bell Ceremony With financial information flashing on screens covering entire walls and dozens of computer monitors, visitors to Western New England University might think for a moment that they had left Wilbraham Road for Wall Street. Instead, they merely set foot in the newest classroom in the University’s College of Business.

University leaders formally dedicated the Frances and Norman Cohen Trading Room and Financial Center on September 24 with the ringing of an opening bell and the cutting of a ticker tape. The stateof-the-art learning environment was made possible by a $1 million bequest by Frances Cohen, whose husband, Norman, graduated from Springfield–Northeastern, which later became Western New England University.

“This investment honors the important role that education played in the lives of both Norman and Frances,” said University President Anthony S. Caprio, speaking of the husband and wife team who built their business into the largest wholesale appliance retailer in the area.

“Moreover, this gift will help us to continue our strategic vision of providing our students with the vital tools necessary to graduate skilled individuals who can be

highly competitive in the workplace.”

“The Cohens always saw Western New England as the source of their business success,” said Jeffrey Sagalyn L’76 (left), who served as Frances’ attorney and trustee of her estate.

After selling their business, Frances became an astute student of the stock market and a savvy investor. Sagalyn called the trading room a “fitting tribute,”

“People skills” may be an overused term in the job market today, but if you’re a victim/witness advocate and not compassionate and empathetic, then you should simply look into another line of work.

Marcus Allen ’11 (management), a victim/witness advocate for the Hampden County district Attorney’s office, exhibits those qualities, as well as knowing when to let things roll off his back. Take, for example, a recent case, when a woman he was assisting gave him a tongue-lashing.

What a way to start the day.

He knew not to take it personally. A man charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle had nearly killed her son, who months later was still recovering. For her, justice was moving at a snail’s pace.

Marcus is used to guiding victims and their relatives not only through the maze of the legal system, but also through a wide range of emotions. However, there was still no sense of closure here. She vehemently disagreed with the sentence recommendations of the dA’s office.

“No, she was not happy,” said Marcus, shaking his head. “She said, ‘There is no way I’m accepting this.’”

So he went to bat for her. “I explained the conversation I had with her to the prosecutor, and we shifted gears,” he said. “We were determined not to let the guy go with just a slap on the wrist.”

The pending case helps illustrate the important services Marcus provides to victims and their families. He is there to advocate in every sense of the word, and that also means giving clients an opportunity to confer with the prosecution before the final disposition of the case in an effort to give back to victims what they have lost most: power and control.

Marcus most often deals with victims of domestic violence, street assaults, larcenies, restraining order violations, thefts, auto accidents, burglaries, and home invasions—most of whom get frustrated when the wheels of justice seem to barely turn or grind to a halt. He prepares them for the realities of the

system—that court is not like it is on television. Justice often takes years.

“The most fulfilling part of my job is when someone says ‘Thank you’ when they get their version of justice,” said Marcus.

THE RIGHT PERSON FOR THE JOB Many victim/witness advocates have a background in criminal justice or human services. Marcus, who majored in management, still had an abundance of skills that made him perfect for the job, such as communication, collaboration, and project management. At Western New England, the Springfield native helped students in the city’s public schools as a mentor and tutor. He was also an assistant program coordinator in the University’s Learn 2 Succeed employment readiness program for Springfield youth. As an intern in the office of U.S. Congressman Richard Neal, he grew accustomed to interacting with politicians and the public.

Marcus also credits the engaging teaching styles of Associate dean Marilyn Pelosi and the late Professor of Management Peter Hess. dr. Pelosi “was always trying to stretch my limits—give me motivation,” he said. “When I got a B-plus on a term paper, dr. P would ask me why I didn’t get an A-minus. She gave me that extra ‘oomph’ I needed.”

MAKING SENSE OF “ORGANIZED CHAOS” When he began the job two years ago, coworkers tried to explain the steep learning curve ahead of him—that becoming comfortable and confident in his role just required time, patience, and the ability to quickly adapt to the complicated (at times) procedures of the court system.

“I had no idea what to expect,” he said. “I didn’t have a criminal justice background. on the first day, I thought I was in over my head. The judges were using different phrases—I just didn’t understand the language they were speaking,” he said with a chuckle. “It was difficult to hear clearly in the courtroom and there was kind of organized chaos, between the attorneys’ conferences and the judges addressing cases—it was a matter of absorbing all of that and learning who the key players are.”

And then there was the inherent stress of a profession that involves handling emotional and distraught people on a daily basis. “For the first three months I had trouble sleeping, so I had to train myself—not necessarily to leave my job at the door—because I still think about some of the cases when I get home. The most important thing I learned was to practice self-care,” he said. This involved getting enough sleep and maintaining a healthy work/life balance.

A KEY PLAYER FOR THE PROSECUTION TEAM “What I like about Marcus is his demeanor, his professional approach to problem solving, and his solution-oriented mindset,” said Assistant district Attorney Edward Kivari Jr. L’84. “He combines good street smarts and a professional polish to deal effectively with people in their worst moments.”

Marcus played basketball for the golden Bears, and Kivari thinks that background “helps him understand the rough-and-tumble nature of our business. You might get knocked down one day, but you’ve got to get up the next day and do it all over again. He has a ‘suit up and show up’ mentality and it serves him—and the entire prosecution team— extremely well.” n

PHILOSOPHY OF PHARMACIST AS EDUCATOR Kam Capoccia Embodies

RoFESSoR KAM CAPoCCIA is director of the Center located at the Cooley Street Big Y World Class Market just a short drive from campus in Springfield. opened in 2010 as a partnership between Western New England University and Big Y Foods, Inc., the facility is one of the largest pharmacy consultation and wellness centers in the region and the first to be located in a supermarket.

“Being in the classroom, I really love seeing the students start to develop a passion and an understanding. It’s a great feeling just watching these little sparks turn into passion, drive, and interest,” says Professor Capoccia. “The Center is different in the sense of seeing patients start to feel better— that’s what really drives me personally.”

By appointment, she meets with patients free of charge and works with their physicians to optimize care, primarily making recommendations about drug therapy, monitoring blood sugar levels, providing education, and managing diet.

For three years, it’s been a solo act for her, but soon she’ll have some welcomed assistance. This year, members of the inaugural class of the College of Pharmacy will begin their advanced practice.

Long-term, she anticipates that five to eight students annually will work with her in the Center in sixweek rotations.

It was Tony Zimmerman, chair of the department of Pharmacy Practice, who initiated the Center idea and Big Y partnership as a means for the College of Pharmacy to serve its surrounding community and provide experiential opportunities for students. He and College of Pharmacy dean Evan Robinson

toured similar Centers in virginia and North Carolina before arriving at the grocery store chain model. While common in the Midwest, it is unique to our region. With its strong commitment to the community, Big Y World Class Market was a natural partner.

To say that the Consultation and Wellness Center filled an important niche in patient care would be an understatement based on community response.

The Center hasn’t had a need to advertise for more than two years.

“I don’t even think we had advertised for a full six months before the floodgates opened,” says Professor Capoccia.

“I also went to Riverbend Medical group and did some self-promotion on what we were doing—that’s when things really took off. Their Springfield office is within walking distance of Big Y so probably 80-90 percent of my folks are from Riverbend.”

She says that proximity is key for her patients, particularly the elderly, who could also get consultation at programs offered at Baystate Health or Mercy Medical Center, which may involve taking one or more buses, or driving and parking, and making a copay. The majority of her patients are in their sixties.

After an hour-long initial consultation, which includes a full medical history, she typically sees them for a span of six to twelve months.

veys offered incrementally throughout the course of treatment. “The feedback is that they learn something new at the visits, they don’t have any trouble making an appointment, and that the Center was easy to find,” she says. one of the most telling survey questions is: “Would you refer this service to a family member or friend?” Capoccia happily reports, “Ninetynine percent of them say, ‘yes!’” n

Amidst sunny skies and 75-degree weather, a multitude of alumni, family, and friends attended Homecoming 2013 on September 28. It was a great day for catching up with old friends—and catching some comedy from the University’s Improv on the Rocks troupe, as well as enjoying exhibitions by the Dance Team and the Martial Arts Team on Golden Bear Boulevard.

Homecoming Weekend featured a performance by comedian Steve Rannazzisi, an inflatable slide, children’s activities, tours of campus, food and hospitality tents, roving magician Robert Hackenson ’04, and various reunions, including the Class of 1993 30th reunion and the U&ME/MGA Reunion Dinner Dance. The following varsity games took place on campus: football, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, women’s tennis, and field hockey.

Beautiful, yes, but Mathematical Sciences major Jessica Ginepro sees more. “It’s actually really cool how much fractal patterns come up in nature,” she points out.

JESSICA GINEPRO FINDING BEAUTY IN MATH SIMPLY PUT, a fractal is a never-ending geometric pattern that repeats at different scales. Nature is full of them but it takes a mind like Jessica’s, with a natural gift for math, to realize the complexity of the beauty. “Math has interested me since a young age,” Jessica says. “There is something to be said for that great feeling of accomplishment you get when you are able to solve a really hard math problem or talk about a theory, which you didn’t even know existed a few months before.”

In the Mathematical Sciences curriculum at Western New England University, Jessica has found the inspiration and challenge she wanted. The program offers coursework in areas of theoretical and applied mathematics, with emphasis on the theory of problem solving, nurturing abilities such as intuition, and inductive and deductive reasoning. With a focus on classroom teaching, the Mathematical Sciences faculty has garnered four of the 18 college-wide Excellence in Teaching Awards awarded annually to date.

“The professors are truly invested in the students here,” Jessica says. “As an example, with Professor Hull I started math research early on in my college career. He is a huge reason why I have accomplished what I have at this point.”

“When I first met Jessica as a sophomore, she didn’t know if she wanted to have a career in math,” recalls Thomas Hull, associate professor of mathematics and a leading expert on the mathematics of origami. “So I gave her an unsolved origami research problem to work on.

A year later, she had solved the problem and was writing it for publication in a research journal. Her enthusiasm for math has infected our whole program.”

This past summer, Jessica was accepted to a Research Experience for Undergraduates at Mount Holyoke College, studying mathematical models of the spread of tuberculosis with Professor dylan Shepardson. From her origami research, she has been working with Professor Hull on his National Science Foundation grant, studying the combinatorics of origami and its applications in physics. She has

presented her research at several professional math conferences, including the 2013 Joint Meetings of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America in San diego. She’s also a cocaptain of the Western New England University Martial Arts Team.

Not unlike that fractal pattern, opportunities are endless for those like Jessica who have earned a degree in Mathematical Sciences. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts employment of mathematicians in various fields, including insurance, in federal and state government, as well as in financial analysis, to increase by 22 percent during the 2008–2018 decade—much faster than the average for other occupations.

Jessica is taking her future one step at a time. Next step, graduate school and after that, nothing is out of reach for this talented mathematician. n

A CREDIT TO HER ALMA MATER JENNIFER BOSHART ’96 APPLIES HER COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS IN GLOBAL MARKETING AT MASTERCARD

It’s a story we hear over and over from our alumni:

It all started with an internship.

URINg HER JUNIoR YEAR, Communication major Jennifer Boshart ’96 participated in the well-regarded Washington Semester in conjunction with American University, a program Western New England has made available to its students for decades. This experience led to an internship in the office of New York Congressman Elliot Engel and helped her appreciate the importance of practical learning. Following graduation, she landed another internship with HBo and began her career in corporate America.

Her HBo internship started a several year run in cable television, working for Nick at Nite, A&E, and Fox Sports Network. Following a stop at Starwood Hotels, where she was responsible for global marketing of the Westin brand, she took a position at MasterCard, and today is a director of global Brand Strategy.

“MasterCard is a globally recognized brand that provides payment solutions in all areas of the world,” she explained of her employer. “I am responsible for ensuring all marketing communications are consistent as they relate to our Personal Payment Solutions and for developing business strategies that will drive our market share and revenue in prioritized markets.”

Working at the corporate headquarters just outside of New York City in Purchase, NY, Jennifer helps to manage MasterCard’s global brand and identify opportunities for new payment solutions in support of emerging platforms. With MasterCard offices in vari-

ous countries, Jennifer’s work has taken to her to many cities in the States as well as Belgium, Singapore, the UK, and dubai.

Jennifer explained that cultivating brand strength globally requires disciplined processes and dedicated teams to ensure all brand and business decisions meet compliance standards.

None of these processes can be maintained without a mastery of communications. “Communications is the foundation of achieving specific goals whether you are working in finance or hospitality,” she said. “Taking the time to listen, not being afraid to ask thoughtful questions, and thinking through solutions in an efficient and effective manner will carry over to any industry.”

These skills she honed during her years at Western New England laid the foundation for her success today and are still those she relies on daily. “I recall my critical thinking and literature courses as areas that expanded my thought process and how to look at situations from many different viewpoints,” said Jennifer. “of course I will never forget many of the professors who provided me with skills I still use today. [The late] Professor Hoar taught me the importance of digesting a significant amount of information and how to deliver key insights in a clear, succinct manner.”

While her position takes her around the world, Jennifer is never far from the educational foundation that Western New England University provided for her career. n

The PharmD/MBA Prepares Patient Care Providers to Take Care of Business BEYoNd THEIR KNoWLEdgE oF MEdICINE ANd dISEASE, pharmacists must be prepared to work with patients, personnel, budgets, and the day-to-day business functions of management. In a program that capitalizes on the strengths of two of our Colleges, Western New England University offers a valuable combined degree program that positions our Pharmacy graduates to advance into management roles: the Pharmd/MBA. “The Pharmd degree alone allows pharmacists to pursue a variety of career paths; however, having the MBA in addition to the Pharmd opens even more doors,” says Pharmd/MBA student Briana Santaniello. “I would like to pursue a career in managed care pharmacy, which will require me to combine my clinical and business knowledge to aid in formulary and prior authorization decisions for a pharmacy benefit management company.”

She has already put her combined knowledge of pharmacy and management to use.

Last summer Briana was among seven pharmacy students in the country chosen to participate in the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy/Pfizer Managed Care Summer Internship program. “I was able to use my clinical and business background to perform a variety of cost-benefit analyses for a health plan in Philadelphia,” she says.

Pursuing both degrees allows students like Briana to take advantage of cross credits to save time and tuition. graduates of the combined degree program will receive two separate degrees, one in business and one in pharmacy.

School of Law Welcomes New Dean Serving 22 years on faculty, Eric Gouvin was named dean at the School of Law on July 1, 2013. University President Anthony S. Caprio praised Dean Gouvin for having excelled as a faculty member and administrator at the law school since 1991. “He has proven himself consistently over the years as an outstanding legal educator and leader within the School of Law and the broader University,” said President Caprio. “Dean Gouvin brings a wealth of experience to the position—not only in the classroom, but also in the Springfield-area community having worked in partnership with area entrepreneurs and small businesses as director of the University’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.”

Dean Gouvin has outlined his goals for the School of Law, noting, “Law practice today is evolving rapidly and law schools need to change, too. Western New England University School of Law has always had a student focus, and I want to redouble that. McKeon Named Director of Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship With Gouvin’s appointment to dean, the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, which he previously led, named a new director last summer.

Jim McKeon has taught entrepreneurship at the University for more than a decade, which made him an ideal candidate to lead the Center. McKeon brings his experience working in a collaborative teaching environment with business, engineering, and legal disciplines to the Center.

“I look forward to serving as director for the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and continuing to build onto the University’s collaborative and integrative entrepreneurial efforts in teaching and programming,” said McKeon, a professional educator within the University’s College of Business. President Anthony S. Caprio briefed guests on the latest news at the University, including capital projects. The host was Michael Borg L’88, a partner at the law firm Soffer, Rech, and Borg LLC. Borg told attendees that if they had visited the campus lately, they would agree that the University has progressed and grown over the years. “Although the physical transformation of the campus has been impressive, I am even more proud of our high quality reputation in the world of higher education,” he said.

Two outstanding alumni were honored at Western New England University last fall for their commitment to their alma mater, accomplishment in their professions, and service to society. Bonnie Malley ’83, executive vice president and chief financial officer at The Phoenix Companies in Hartford, was presented with the Alumna of the Year award at the President’s Reception on September 24. WWLP TV 22 anchor/reporter Matt Caron ’10 received the Young Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award at an October 20 brunch ceremony that also honored the Alumni Association Skookum Award winners.

As an active member of the College of Business Advisory Board since its formation in 2007, Bonnie Malley has provided valuable feedback based on her career background and experience to the dean and department chairs about new initiatives. She also participates in the annual Beta Gamma Sigma honor society banquet, as well as Hartford alumni networking receptions. And, for the past two years, Bonnie has been the kick-off speaker for the AlumniLinks to Career Success mentoring program.

Matt Caron started behind the scenes at WWLP TV 22 shortly before graduation, doing production work and then became assistant newscast director. Since 2010 he has been on camera, and his dynamic breaking news reporting could be seen during the tornado that devastated western Massachusetts in 2011, the destructive October storm a few months later, and the massive gas explosion in downtown Springfield last year.

His reporting of a civil rights controversy in the town of Orange, MA, gained national attention.

Beyond his responsibilities at the local NBC affiliate, Matt remains dedicated to his alma mater and is frequently seen on campus speaking to classes about his experiences and meeting with students in the Sophomore Career Connections or AlumniLinks mentor programs.

Ron Dias and Erin Sullivan Celebrate Coaching Milestones

Western New England University’s Ron Dias and Erin Sullivan come from different generations, but they share several things in common.

Both are among the top soccer coaches in the Northeast who celebrated big milestones this past fall. These two individuals also give a lot of credit for their successes to perhaps the biggest name in Western New England athletics: Coach Bill Downes.

Dias and Golden Bears Celebrate Anniversary Seasons Women’s soccer celebrated its 30th Anniversary in 2013 and Ron dias has been the coach for 20 of those seasons. This past fall, he led his young squad to a 9-74 record for its best showing in three years. Not bad for a team that had 14 sophomores and six freshmen on the 20player roster and that was coming off an 8-11-1 performance the previous year.

Highlights included a first-place finish at the Husson (ME) Classic to open the season and a 5-0 mark in matches decided by a single goal. Western New England was the only team to defeat first-place Endicott in regular season Commonwealth Coast Conference action and almost pulled off the upset of the year by tying second-

place Roger Williams 1-1, a team that was ranked 19th nationally at the time. dias, 67, joined the golden Bears staff in 1994 and inherited a program that had suffered eight losing campaigns. He quickly turned things around as his first squad posted an 8-10 record for the second highest win total since becoming a varsity program in 1984. The golden Bears then enjoyed eight consecutive winning seasons with the 1998 team compiling a school best 20-2 mark and winning the ECAC division III Metro Tournament. The next season Western New England posted a 14-8-1 record, won the great Northeast Athletic Conference (gNAC) Tournament title, and

participated in the program’s first NCAA division III Championship.

A native of Ludlow, MA, dias has a 230-163-25 record (58.0%) against opposition that includes many of the top squads in the region.

He has been on the sideline for 82% of the program’s 280 victories. The Keene State graduate was inducted into the University’s downes Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008.

Along the way he has earned the admiration and respect from players, coaches, and administrators.

“Ron has the great ability to coach women like men and treat them like women,” said Coach downes. “In my mind, he is the best women’s soccer coach in western Massachusetts.” dias downplays his accomplishments, instead focusing on the student-athletes who have contributed to the team’s success over the past two decades.

“The Women’s soccer program has evolved into a very competitive program,” says dias. “I consider myself very lucky to have coached here for the last 20 years. over that time, I have coached some wonderful young ladies and a great many outstanding student athletes.” He points out that women’s soccer was the first women’s team to win an ECAC championship in 1998, and was also the first to compete in the NCAA Championship in 1999. The program has won five conference championships, participated in four NCAA championships, four ECAC Championships, and the team has been to every conference tournament since 1995. “All of our success can be attributed to the young ladies who have worn the Western New England colors,” said dias.

Erin Sullivan Sets All-time Win Mark Erin Sullivan set a school record for most wins as men’s soccer coach when the golden Bears defeated Framingham State 2-1 on Sept. 18, 2013. He broke the mark of 184 victories set by downes from 197989. The 39-year-old Sullivan has a 19788-34 (67.1%) mark in 14 seasons.

This past fall, the voorheesville, NY, native directed the golden Bears to a 165-3 record (72.9%) and a 6-1-2 mark for second place in the conference. The 16 victories were a seven-game improvement from 2012 (9-9-3) and tied as the third best total in the program’s 48-year history. The University also captured the CCC Tournament and reached the second round of the NCAA division III Championship. Western New England was ranked 24th in the final regular season National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) division III poll and third in New England behind Amherst and Brandeis.

“I feel blessed to have been surrounded by so many exceptional coaches, players, and support staff during my time at Western New England so, in my humble opinion, these victories actually belong to all of those people, especially all the incredibly competitive, hard-working, and talented players who have made countless sacrifices without hesitation,” stated Sullivan.

Like dias, Sullivan needed a rebuilding season to get his philosophy across to his

players. His first squad posted a 4-13-2 record in 2000, but since then the golden Bears have compiled 11 winning seasons in the last 13 years. The squad captured five CCC crowns in the last seven years, and have participated in eight NCAA division III Championships during that time. director of Athletics Mike Theulen says, “The tremendous on-the-field accomplishments of Ron and Erin pale in comparison to what they do as role models for their players and as outstanding representatives for our University and our Athletic Family. Ron’s 20-year Hall of Fame career is a testimony to his hard work, commitment, and passion. His 1998 ECAC Champion team signaled the start of a new era of athletic excellence that we still enjoy to this day.”

Theulen says since Sullivan’s arrival in 2000, he has been on a mission to return golden Bears men’s soccer to its past glory under Coach downes.

“His vision, work ethic, and passion have been exemplary. The men’s soccer program is now one of the nation’s finest. our proud soccer alumni from both programs stay very connected with our current teams, again reflecting the positive effect that these talented men have had over the years on their players. Western New England is, indeed, fortunate to have such dedicated professionals,” Theulen stated. n

Once established in the family business, you could have never returned to class. What drove you to finish your business degree, and why was it important to you to earn it from Western New England University?

“It was very important to myself, as well as all those who supported my decision to become a part-time student, that I finish what I had started.

Thirteen years later, I finally finished what I had begun back in the fall of 1999 and received my bachelor’s degree in Business Management. Much to my benefit, during my long tenure as a student, the College became a university and also had achieved AACSB accreditation.”

The University offers an online completion program (the Online BBA) for people who have associates degrees or others like you who need flexibility. How did online study work for you?

“The online BBA program was instrumental to the continued pursuit of my degree; it enabled me to fulfill my degree requirements in half the time it took with traditional classes. If my advisor hadn’t recommended the program to me, I’d still be taking night classes as my schedule permitted to meet my degree requirements.”

President Caprio made special arrangements to personally award you your diploma. What did that mean to you?

“The president taking time out of his busy schedule to award me with my diploma supports the University’s mission to achieve a personal connection with their students. From the top down the message is clear —everyone is vested in your success as a student.”

What are your responsibilities in the ROTC program?

I report to an active duty Lieutenant Colonel and split my time between the Western New England and UMass campuses. My job is to coach, teach, and mentor university and college students on military leadership and military tactics. Additionally, I’m responsible for all recruiting, retention, and enrollment as well as marketing and advertising.

What were the biggest take-a-ways from your own ROTC experience that benefitted you most in your military and private sector careers?

An RoTC Cadet is a typical college student, but with added commitment. The program provided me with structure and discipline, but allowed me to focus on academics and enjoy the college experience.

I learned to balance my responsibilities and stay organized. When I graduated, I had already a basic leadership skill set and a level of confidence that I wouldn’t have had without RoTC. Explain how our ROTC program at Western New England assists students with tuition aid and how it differs from other programs in terms of free housing?

Army RoTC Scholarship cadets receive free tuition and fees. They also receive money for books and a monthly spending allowance that will increase every year. Western New England offers four-year scholarship winners free room and board on top of that. very few schools in the country offer this additional benefit.

How is our ROTC program a resource to the University and the local community?

A number of our students choose to serve part-time in the National guard or Reserves, as I did. The curriculum prepares students to become effective leaders and managers in a variety of responsible and challenging commissioned officer fields, thus facilitating early middle-management career development and progression. our program has become more and more involved in community service projects, especially during the holiday season. We work at a local soup kitchen, and this year we’re raising money for the Boston one Fund. We’re also heavily involved in most major campus events.

Most importantly, graduates get to serve our country in the most respected career in the world.

The 1990 “Have-a-Heart” dance marathon lasted for an astounding 22 hours and raised $10,000 for the elderly. About half of the 98 participants finished this grueling event. “I ate my Twix, drank my water, and lived through it,” exclaimed Ronald Przybycien ’92/G’97.

The Peer Advisors sponsored the competition, and the proceeds were donated to the Springfield Council on Aging to purchase a van for patients at Springfield Municipal Hospital. Students competed for a grand prize of $1,000 in cash, which was kept in a locked chest. For every $100 a student raised, he or she was assigned a combination that might open the trunk, and Kari O’Neil ’90 finally sprung the lock.

Then Mayor Mary E. Hurley L’96 was on hand at the end to thank the tired students. Brenda Marsian ’91 said she survived on pure adrenaline: “I have to admit I didn’t think I’d last as long as I did, and the more tired I was the more energetic I became,” she said.

MIDNIGHT MADNESS 2003 This Clash of the Classes includes competitions such as a tug-of-war that follows in the University tradition of the old freshman vs. sophomore rope pull of the 1960s. The event kicks off the winter sports season.

Each class has a color and a section of the bleachers. Who won in 2003? The yellow team sure looks determined!

THE BEAR ARRIVES A five-ton, nine-foot replica of an Alaskan Kodiak Island Brown Bear was installed next to the Campus Center on November 7, 1986.

Former Professor of Management and founder and former Head Coach of the football team Henry “Hank” Bazan spearheaded an effort, called “Bring the Bear Home Committee,” to bring the statue to campus. “We need to get the bear on campus not only for the Athletic Department,” said the late College of Business Professor.

“The bear represents every student here.”

A gift from the football team, the Marketing and Management Associations, and individual donors, the bear was painted gold and received the nickname “Spirit” from Hank.
