AFC Liverpool
WELCOME We have shared a few landmark’s with tonight’s visitors in recent years as AFC Liverpool were the first NW Counties side we ever played here at The Recreation Ground when were seeking to progress from the Manchester League. They were also the first side we played following our promotion to the Premier Division in August 2013 when we unfortunately ended up on the losing side as we were finding our feet in the early days of life at this level. Since then we’ve not fared very well in our two away games, drawing 2-2 at Valerie Park last season and then going down 3-1 at Marine earlier this season. We played very well in that game and were unlucky not to get at least a point, so today is a chance for us to record another first and get 3 points from our visitors. We’re pleased to welcome back the travelling AFC Liverpool fans who have always enjoyed their previous visits to WEST, and we trust they all have a safe journey back to Liverpool after today’s game. We return to Brookburn Road tonight after a tough series of fixtures, where we have struggled with injuries, suspensions and players being away. After a dismal trip to Winsford where we were really out of sorts, we saw the players give a spirited performance at Congleton where we had a lot of possession and attaching play and were worth at least a draw. Due to our production and print schedule this programme has had to be printed before we could update the results and stats to include the result of our game on Saturday at Colne. Information on that game together with reports from tonight will be in our match programme on Saturday, when we welcome Bootle back to Brookburn Road after their recent visit in the MEN United Cup. We will be looking to reverse the result from that game where Bootle ran out deserved winners. UPCOMING FIXTURES The result of various postponements and the revised league fixtures has meant we have played the last three games away from home, however, the tables are totally reversed as we now have 5 more home games on the bounce after tonight. This is a big ask in terms of the pressure on our great band of volunteers, but we look forward to these games and to your continued support in as many of these games as possible. From the Dugout… Good Afternoon and welcome to Brookburn Road for tonight’s game against AFC Liverpool. This is one of the games we lost due to the bad weather in December, but what a great chance to enjoy the atmosphere of a night match against AFC Liverpool. A side we’ve got very good relations with, playing us several times in pre-season over the last several years as we geared up to enter the NWCFL and were also our first ever Premier Division opponents. We faced off at their new home at Marine FC on a beautiful day in October, we were superb for an hour which was unfortunately ended by two Liverpool goals, we were still in the game until Jordan Hitchen was unlucky to get sent off and the penalty made it academic. We won plaudits on the day for our performance and today we will try to take the next step and claim the three points. Since my last notes we haven’t had the results we would have wanted, coming back empty handed from Winsford twice, following games against 1874 Northwich and Winsford United, followed by another defeat at Congleton Town. We were certainly not on our game at Winsford for either match, not helped by the squad missing a number of players on both occasions. However, it was pleasing to see us bounce back at Congleton where we even had to call on our physio Paddy to don the gloves as we had a goalkeeper shortage. Everyone fought for the cause against the Bears and we were unlucky to come away empty handed. Of course in between the league fixtures we entertained Bootle on 14th February in the MEN United Cup, we were again struggling for players, but this isn’t to deflect the fact that on the day Bootle were deserved winners, their young team had boundless energy and pressed us all over the pitch. The highlight of the day was local Manchester band Dutch Uncles launching their new album at the game, we are delighted with their involvement at the club, their presence on the touchline is becoming a real feature at our home games, long may it continue! I am sure you will have noticed our fixture list has taken on a very unusual feel, we seem to be on the road for long spells then never away from Brookburn Road, and this is very much the case in March as we have 6 home games on the bounce. What happened to the old sequence of home, away, home, away etc? This is a demanding spell for us all from management, players and for all those who are involved with ensuring the match arrangements, publicity and facilities can be prepared for these 6 games in 29 days. I am also aware of the demands on our fans and really hope you can play your part and support the team to gather as many points as possible in this period . West 3 Bootle 0 match report… West ended their interest in cup competitions for another year with a 0-3 home loss to Bootle in the MEN UNITED Cup Quarter Final. After a weekend of media build up including mentions on the BBC and on NME.com, thanks to the attendance of Chorlton band Dutch Uncles, a bumper crowd of 133 welcomed the teams onto the field whilst the bands new single played on the tannoy. West were missing Anthony Potts, Scott Mason, Gary Lilley, Matt Eckersley and Steve Settle with Nic Evangelinos only able to take a place on the bench because of illness. However, manager Andy Nelson was able to recall Callum Schofield, Jordan Poole and Danny Summers to the starting line-up with Summers making just his seventh start of the season. West were on the back foot from the kick off as Bootle dominated the opening moments with intense pressure. West goalkeeper Jordan Hitchen was the first to be called into action saving low with his feet with Bootle through one-on-one on six minutes. It was a warning of what was to come as the visitors took a deserved lead on nine minutes when Kieran Haligan advanced down the left and pulled a cross back across the penalty area for Josh Hamilton to finish brilliantly pulling it back across the goalkeeper. West stepped up their game and brought themselves into the match enjoying the lion’s share of possession but without creating any clear cut openings with Kieran Brocklehurst having the best chance when he lopped a difficult header into the hands from a Jordan Poole cross. Adam Hilton then had a shot blocked from range before Lewis Schofield curled a shot over the bar from range. On 34 minutes it was 0-2 as Bootle won a series of throws down the left, advancing down the field before winning a corner. The corner was only half cleared with the clearance reaching a Bootle player; his shot scuffed under a players boot and fell to Kieran Haligan who made no mistake from five yards as he finished into the far corner to give Bootle a deserved half time 2-0 lead. In the second half West came out with renewed determination pinning Bootle in their half for long spells of the game with Bootle content to play on the counter and slow the game down. West’s best chance came from a Callum Jones cross on the right as the header was deflected for a corner. West continued to battle but couldn’t force Bootle goalkeeper Jack Mano into a meaningful save. Andy Nelson rang the changes late in the game to try and inject fresh impetus into the game bringing on Richmond Botchey for Poole and Evangelinos for Brocklehurst. Botchey would have an immediate contribution as he had a long range effort blocked for a corner. Sadly for Evangelinos he would be a substituted substitute as he was forced off with a hamstring injury with Ndouma Chilaka his replacement. The game was wrapped up on 86 minutes when Bootle were awarded a penalty for a trip at the edge of the area. Josh Hamilton stepped up and sent Hitchen the wrong way with a cool penalty slammed into the bottom left hand corner. Credit to West as they continued to search for a goal in the final minutes of time and stoppages with Bootle keeper Mano finally being called into action but it was Bootle who will take a well-deserved place in the semi-finals of the League Challenge Cup as their composure and clinical finishing was enough to upstage their hosts. Winsford United 4 West 1 match report… In one of their poorest performances since joining the North West Counties, West slumped to a 41 defeat at the hands of Winsford United. With his squad down to the bare bones West manager Andy Nelson gave goalkeeper Conrad Betton his first start of the season and recalled Tre Baldwin-Willis and Richmond Botchey to the starting line-up. He was also able to call upon Gary Lilley after his two match suspension but had to contend with the absences of Rick Gleave, Scott Mason, Lewis & Callum Schofield, Nic Evangelinos and Adam Hilton. West started the game slowly as they struggled to adapt to the heavily sanded pitch and the home side created the first chance of the game with Betton making a low save with his feet oneon-one. Winsford continued their pressure as they had a chance fly over the bar from an overhead kick after a goal mouth scramble. At the other end Kieran Brocklehurst came close with West's first chance of the game when he headed Tre Baldwin-Willis' cross inches wide of the post. Winsford's pressure continued as Kyle Riley headed wide a free header from a Winsford free kick. The opening minutes of the game were riddled with free kicks as both sides committed a series of petty fouls but it was a free kick which gave the visitors the lead on 22 minutes when Mark Rogers was adjudged to have committed a trip at the edge of the area. Despite appearing to take the ball cleanly, the referee awarded a free kick and booked the West captain. Salt was further rubbed into the wounds when the free kick struck the wall and diverted past the stranded Betton to give Winsford a 1-0 lead. It was 2-0 almost immediately afterwards as a tame shot was stuck towards Betton but he failed to take it cleanly and he fumbled it straight to Riley who finished under him. There was a flurry of yellow cards for the home side as three players went into the book for late challenges with Gary Lilley joining them. It was 3-0 on 38 minutes as a long ball was played across the West six yard line; it fell to Botchey who failed to clear it and allowed Alex Byrne to thump it across goal for an emphatic finish. The first half came to an end with a low Mark Rogers shot firing just past the post after a well worked throw in routine. In the second half West continued their recent trait of only playing once the game was beyond them and almost immediately pulled a goal back when Poole and Baldwin-Willis combined down the right to play in Brocklehurst but couldn't quite apply the finish. West continued to keep the pressure on with Baldwin-Willis and Rogers both firing over from good positions. Baldwin-Willis would go close again as he ran from deep into the penalty, despite being pulled all the way, but fired his chance over the bar. West’s best move of the game came as Brocklehurst ran down the left his pass was dummied by Baldwin-Willis to Eckersley who forced another good save from the Winsford goalkeeper. However it would get worse for West as with virtually the hosts first attack of the second half a long range shot from Lee Wilshaw was seemingly heading wide before it struck the back of a West defender and diverted past Betton into the West goal. West were finally on the score sheet on 75 minutes when Baldwin-Willis cross found Lilley who turned and played in Brocklehurst who scored with a low finish. Sadly with West pressing for a second the game saw a quick pair of red cards as Mark Rogers was shown a second yellow for a clumsy challenge in the middle of the park before Winsford’s Matthew Tierney saw his second red card of the season against West as he was shown a second yellow card for a wild over the top foul on Alex Baird. Fortunately ‘Bairdy’ was able to finish the game and the referee blew the full time whistle shortly after to bring an end to a second miserable trip to Winsford in a fortnight. Rob McKay

West host international album launch for Dutch Uncles Our last home game, 3-0 defeat to Bootle in the Men United Cup, was something of a disappointment for everyone involved with the club, but the day was not all doom and gloom. As most West fans will know, the match was sponsored by local band Dutch Uncles, who decided to launch their new album O Shudder right here at their local football club. This was a great bit of publicity for the club, and in the run up to the game we were featured in such publications as NME and the Manchester Evening News. It was great to see fans of the band pouring in through the gate, and the event was certainly boosted funds, as well as garnering publicity. A highlight for many was the penalty shoot out at half time between members of the band and fans. This is another example of Wests growing link with the community. As a club at the heart of one of Manchester's most cosmopolitan areas, it is fantastic to mix the football in with the local music scene. After all, what over non league club could boast of having hosted an international album launch?

History…
AFC Liverpool
AFC Liverpool was formed in 2008, by Liverpool FC fans, who had becoming increasingly frustrated at the cost and difficulty in obtaining tickets for the Premiership. The supposed ‘39th game’ in which Premier League fixtures would be played in different parts of the world proved to be the final straw, highlighting that top flight football is now more concerned about money than its fans. A website was created and, with the response being positive, work began to move to the next stage and create a steering group to make the club a reality. At the beginning of March 2008 AFC Liverpool was officially formed and it was made clear that the club was not in any way a response to the ownership issue at Anfield or a protest against Liverpool Football Club, more a reaction to issues at the top end of football in general. By May, AFC Liverpool had appointed its first manager in Derek Goulding. The following month the club arranged a groundshare with Prescot Cables and had been accepted into the North West Counties Football League. The club’s first game was a 1-1 draw in a friendly with St Helens Town on 16th July 2008 and they began their inaugural league season extremely well, beating Darwen 5-0 in their first competitive game and going on a run of ten wins in the first eleven games. However they failed to keep this momentum going, and the club eventually finished fourth in the league. The season did prove fruitful though as a victory in the final of the First Division Trophy over Padiham at Ashton Athletic provided the club’s first piece of silverware. 2009/10 began with three successive victories but after this the season became very indifferent. After a 5-2 home defeat to Atherton Collieries on Easter Monday, Derek Goulding left the club and ex assistant and goalkeeping coach Paul Moore was appointed caretaker Manager. Under Moore’s stewardship AFC had a strong end to the 2009/10 campaign, winning five out of their last seven league games to climb to fifth in the league and also retaining the First Division Trophy, coming from behind to beat Cheadle Town 2-1 in the final at Flixton. In doing so, AFC Liverpool became the first club not only to win the Trophy twice but also successfully defend it. 2010/11 also began in promising fashion with the Reds going on a ten game unbeaten run after an opening day loss at AFC Darwen. However despite amassing their highest ever points total promotion never looked probable due to the form of would be Champions AFC Blackpool and second placed Runcorn Town, resulting in a fourth placed finish, missing out on third by goal difference. There was disappointment too in the First Division Trophy when they reached the final for a third consecutive time only to lose to Atherton Collieries 3-2 in extra time. In the FA Vase, steady progress was made to the third round, where their dreams of Wembley were dashed by a defeat at Whitley Bay, who would go on to claim a third successive triumph. However at the League AGM in July 2011 there was a surprise when Rossendale were expelled from the league and Formby were demoted to the First Division. Holker Old Boys, who finished third on goal difference, declined an invitation to take up a place in the Premier Division, meaning that AFC Liverpool were invited to take the place and the club accepted the chance that was offered to them.

The 2011/12 season started badly in terms of results but not performances for AFC Liverpool as they had to wait until November for their first League victory, which came about in the form of a 7-0 demolition of Winsford United. From that point, AFC Liverpool, who had been rooted to the foot of the table, began the steady climb out of danger, ultimately finishing in nineteenth place, sixteen points clear of the relegation places. 2012/13 saw AFC Liverpool consolidate their position in the North West Counties Premier Division with an eleventh placed finish, accumulating sixty points in the process. As the season progressed, manager Paul Moore built a core squad of players, which played some of the most exciting, attractive football in the league and post Christmas, won fifteen and drew five of twenty eight games, including a defeat of eventual Premier Division champions Padiham on their home patch. The performances were rewarded in the final game of the season as the Reds beat recently crowned champions of the Evo-Stik NPL First Division North, Skelmersdale United, 3-0 in the Liverpool Senior Cup semi final to book an all North West Counties clash with Bootle in the final. Last season the Reds started the campaign at a pace, topping the early tables. They fell just short of being the youngest club to claim the Liverpool Senior Cup, losing the final on penalties, and remained among the league's pacesetters until November and December when six points taken from eight games saw them drop away. Paul Moore's side remained consistent post Christmas though and the club eventually achieved their highest league finish, ending up seventh with a total of seventy points.

Congleton Town 2 West 1 match report… Despite a superb display and a late fight back West fell to their four consecutive defeat losing 2-1 away to Congleton Town. West started brightly and created the games first chance on two minutes when Adam Hilton chased a long ball into the box, turned and curled his shot just past the post. West continued their pressure and created another chance when Matt Eckersley took a cross down on his chest and fired his shot just wide on the half volley from the edge of the penalty area just two minutes later. On 14 minutes Kieran Brocklehurst went close for West again as he was released down the right from an Eckersley passed, he raced into the box but he fired his shot wide at the near post. Congleton grew into the game and began to pressure the West defence with long balls down the channels. Their first chance came on 26 minutes when Anthony Potts made a terrific block to force a corner. Despite the pitch conditions both sides tried to play their football and Congleton almost took the lead on 31 minutes when a long range effort flew past the post. A moment of brilliance gave the home side the lead on 36 minutes as Scott McGowan raced down the right, beat his man, flicked the ball inside to Richard Bailey who curled his shot low into the left bottom corner. The half wasn’t over though as West almost fought back immediately when Mark Rogers played a superb through ball to Lewis Schofield but he spooned his shot over the bar. Scott Jones almost levelled as he was denied by a last ditch tackle inside the six yard box. The first half ended in minor controversy as the referee blew for half time with West bearing down on goal; however it was a minor blemish in an otherwise excellent performance from the match officials. West came out for the second half and began it in the same way that they left off with Eckersley racing through and having his low shot from the edge of the area well saved by the Congleton goalkeeper. At the other end Congleton almost doubled their lead when they headed over unmarked from a corner. Hilton came close with a chance when he dribbled through the middle, beating several players but his shot went well wide. Tre Baldwin-Willis came on for Brocklehurst and was immediately involved in the action when he broke the offside trap one-on-one but fired his shot into the stand behind the goal. He went close again almost immediately forcing the Bears goalkeeper to push away a low shot from distance. West were made to pay for their missed chances when on 67 minutes a Congleton corner was flicked on and found two Bears players un-marked in the six yard box and Andrew Langford finished off the move. However West weren’t finished as they went down the other end and immediately pulled a goal back when Potts headed home from a Hilton free kick. Rejuvenated Rogers and Lewis Schofield both went close with chances over the bar. Lewis Schofield then went close again when BaldwinWillis broke the offside trap, delivered a great cross with the final effort going wide. The final 15 minutes of the game was a frantic end-to-end occasion which saw both sides having chances with Lewis Schofield and Baldwin-Willis repeatedly breaking the offside trap. However West couldn’t get the goal they needed to earn a point. It was a superb advert for the NWCFL, a game in which there were no bookings, and the lads put in a terrific effort. Rob McKay

Golden Goal returns At our last home game, the Men United Cup match against Bootle, Golden Goal tickets were sold before the game. This initiative returned after a lengthy spell due to Jonny and Danny’s desire to help raise funds for the club has had a successful start, and we hope West fans will continue to support it in future games. Briefly this is know how it works, Golden Goal is a competition which can be entered by buying a ticket for the cost of £1. Each ticket has a number from one to ninety-five printed on it, and there is also a ticket printed with the words “no goal”. The winning number is the number on which the game's first goal is scored. In the event of a 0-0 draw, the no goal ticket will be the winner. The prize will be half the Golden Goal takings for that match (minimum twenty pounds). So, the more tickets bought, the bigger the prizes!
Stockport Sports Fate Uncertain One of West's best results this season has been the 6-0 victory over Stockport Sports. However, that match may well be expunged from the North West Counties record books, as Stockport's fate now hangs in the balance. A league meeting has been called to discuss Stockport Sports' potential expulsion from the league, as the club is now in breach of numerous league rules. This meeting is set to take place March 2nd, but at the time of going to press the result is unknown. The trouble started late last year, when Stockport were banished from their home at Stockport Sports Village over unpaid rent. This has led to Stockport not being able to fulfil their home fixtures, and they have now not played a home game since December. This amounts to violating the rules of the North West Counties, as it is not permissible to leave fixtures unfulfilled. Making matters worse is the fact that Stockport Sports also owe money to the league – another breach of rules. Things do not look good for Stockport Sports and it is hard to see how a club with no matchday income will be able to find enough money to pay their debts as well as finding a ground. Best wishes in the future to Stockport, whatever the outcome of the league meeting. The club have been around for over twenty years, formerly using the name of Woodley Sports, and have played at a higher level in the Evo Stik Divison 1. It is a shame to see any other nonleague club in trouble, and especially one of our closest neighbours. Hopefully, something can be worked out and we will lock horns in league action once again.

Ground Safety In the interest of spectator comfort and safety, the following conditions apply at the clubs Brookburn Road ground and must be observed at all times.
In case of fire or other emergency that requires the clubhouse or ground to be evacuated instructions will be given over the public address system, and we ask that you comply with those instructions immediately. The chanting of racist or obscene chanting is strictly forbidden. Glasses, bottles, gas canisters, knives, darts, tools, flag poles or any other articles likely to cause injury are not permitted into the ground. Alcohol may be purchased and consumed in the bar area only. Children are not allowed in the Club House unless accompanied by an adult. Encroachment onto the playing area is forbidden at all times. Standing is not allowed in front of the seated areas. All forms of transport on the clubs car park is at the owners’ risk.
The club reserves the right to remove any person from the ground who is in breach of these rules or whose presence is a source of danger or annoyance to others. A Brief History… West Didsbury and Chorlton FC, have come a long way in their 105 year history which began back in 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury.
West played friendlies at first and then in the Manchester Alliance League until the First World War 1914. After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as that League did not permit a name suggesting association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A, staying in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in the L+C League until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. The home ground from before 1914 until the mid 1980’s was Christie Playing Fields, and then the owners, Manchester and Salford Playing Fields Society, gave the club notice to quit having decided to sell off the land for commercial development – now ironically called ‘Christie Fields’ office park. After several years’ nomadic existence searching for a new home, the club acquired the redundant and overgrown Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road in 1996, and began to restore this to active use and develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold. Work was completed in time to start the 1997-98 season using excellent new changing rooms and clubhouse facilities aided by a Lottery grant, new sponsors and members’ fundraising, but without a penny from the Playing Fields Society sale proceeds. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect the new location in Chorlton and the club was then elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 West won its first Manchester League silverware lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season 2008/09 West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final. won their League. With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, 2009/10 was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield (the third consecutive year in the final) and was league runners-up. The reserves won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League.
In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic 65 points out of 72 possible. This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in Manchester League history dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills. The Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League and then started a second veterans team such was the interest in the club. Plans were also made to formally integrate junior football as the club Vision is to be a FA Charter Standard Community Club, playing at the highest possible level it can whilst remaining financially viable. Further improved saw floodlights erected in 2011 to meet FA requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-2012 as a Step 7 club. Election to the NWCFL followed in June 2012 and the club had an incredible first season winning the Div1 Trophy, finishing in 3rd position after an amazing run in during March and April to secure promotion and also winning a guaranteed FA Cup place. The over 45’s team again chipped in with Cheshire Veterans league silverware. 2013-14 saw the club meet a number of challenges on and off the field by recovering from a series of early season setbacks and defeats in August to consolidate with a very creditable 12th place league finish. Two new stands were installed to improves the spectator facilities, new grass pitches and youth teams were added as part of the long term development plan, whilst remaining as a volunteer run, ‘not for profit’ club. The other historic milestones achieved during the season were the 2-0 home victory over Abbey Hey in the club’s first ever appearance in the FA Cup followed by a 2-1 first ever FA Vase victory away at NCEL Rossington Main near Doncaster in mid September. This season the club hosts Brighouse Town from the Evo Stik league in the FA Cup at the end of August having been given a walk by the FA against NWCFL new club Cammell Laird 1907.
