Welcome to BOOTLE A warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Bootle to Brookburn Road for today’s game. What a difference a few days can make Following the disappointment of exiting the Emirates FA Cup, the way that the team bounced back last Wednesday night against New Mills was extremely pleasing. The performance in the first half was exceptional, with the whole team playing with an intensity and skill which New Mills, who have started the season well and won the previous game 6-1 could not live with. The was confirmed listening to the comments at half time from the stunned New Mills Committee and spectators summing up how strong a performance it was. By killing the game off, early in the second half it allowed the large contingent of West Supporters to enjoy the rest of the game, comfortable in the knowledge that the match would end with a league record of played 4 won 3 drawn 1, a very strong start to the season. This continued with another strong performance on Saturday against Padiham which resulted in a 1-0 win to push us up to 4th. Due to print deadlines this game will be covered in our next programme. Mark Rogers It was great to see Mark score the third goal against New Mills on what was his 100th game for the club. It will give us great pleasure to present Mark with an award in recognition of this achievement at a future first team game Bootle It is with pleasure that we welcome Bootle to the Recreation Ground this evening, for what should be a close encounter. At the time of print they currently sit 5th in the league with three wins and two losses from their first five games in a league which continues to be topped by Runcorn Town and now only has 2 unbeaten teams in it, which include West. Our Juniors As we get near to the end of August, our Junior teams will be on the way back from their Summer break and will shortly be starting pre season training on Hardy Farm ready for the forthcoming season playing in the Timperley Junior Football league. We currently run teams all the way through from Soccer Skills through to Under 16 level. We wish them all the best for the season and if you know anyone who wishes to join any of the teams please ask behind the bar for the relevant contact details of individual managers.
Dates for your diary One of the key aims of the Clubs Committee this year is to ensure that we enhance the use of the pitches and clubhouse on match day. By doing so, we hope to both increase our presence in the Community and raise additional revenue. As such, we will be organising a quiz night in late September/early October, details of which will be in the next home games programme and advertised in the club house, we hope you will be able to support these events. We would also like to give advance notice that our annual Bonfire party will actually fall on November 5th this year after our planned home game against Winsford. Steve Settle’s Notes Good evening everyone and welcome to Brookburn Road for this evenings NWCFL Premier Division fixture against Bootle. We hope that Joe and his team, their committee and their supporters enjoy the evening and have a safe journey home. Bootle have started the season well and I’m sure the boys will have to be at our best to get the result we want. They have enjoyed good wins over Barnton, Ashton Athletic and Winsford and are just 1 space behind us in the table going into tonight’s game. I was absolutely delighted with getting the win against Padiham on Saturday. Sometimes in football you don’t always get what you deserve but we definitely deserved the 3 points after dominating the 2nd half. I felt the first half was very even and at times we were starting to get frustrated after hitting the bar and not quite having the quality in the final third to break them down. At half time the message was patience, believe in what we are doing and chances will come. In the 2nd half we were terrific with wave after wave of attack. Only some inspired defending and goalkeeping kept us out but in the end the pressure told and we were able to get the win. I was really pleased with Ricky being able to get the winner coming off the bench. Anyone that has watched the team over the past few seasons will have seen Rick’s ability going forward, sometimes his job limits his availability but he can make a significant contribution this season when he’s available. In addition to that I’d like to welcome Ben Woods to the club. We’ve been looking for a winger since Nic moved back down south and in Ben we have a player that is talented, quick and works hard for the team. Exactly the attributes we were looking for. I’m sure you will enjoy watching him play. Overall Brocks and I are really pleased with the start we have made. Barring a crazy 5 minute spell against Squires Gate in the FA Cup we have been very good and controlled most games. The first half at New Mills during the week was about as good as I have seen us

play. We completely dominated every aspect of the game and they couldn’t cope with us going forward. As such we are really enjoying watching the team play. We have high expectations of the lads for this season and their performances have reinforced that judgement. The challenge for the boys now is to continue to get better and maintain that standard of performance. Lots of the talk in the run up to Saturdays game was about turning a good start into a very good start. This week we have two games to make it an excellent start. On the injury front Gaz Lilley is still struggling with a tight groin and should be good to go in a couple of weeks. Rob Black has a slight tweak of the hamstring but should be good to go in a week or so. Simmo is also a couple of weeks off with his ankle knock. Apart from that we have a clean bill of health. I am still looking to bring in a defender but we are really happy with the squad that we have. For the first time we have real competition for places in every position and as such we are expecting to say greater consistency over the course of the season. History of BOOTLE The original Bootle F.C. were formed in 1880 and played at Hawthorne Road. They were in fact Everton FC’s biggest rivals. The Bucks where the first ever winners of the Liverpool Senior Cup, had in their ranks the first black footballer in Andrew Watson and regularly had bigger crowds than their neighbours. In 1889–90 Bootle became founder members of the Football Alliance, narrowly missing out on the football league the previous season. That season was the most successful as we finished league runners-up, reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, where we lost to Blackburn Rovers (0-7). When the Alliance merged with the Football League in 1892, Bootle became founder members of the new Second Division. However, despite a respectable 8th place final position, the club dropped out after one season due to financial difficulties and the attraction of Everton playing in the First Division. They were replaced by new neighbours, Liverpool. Football returned to the town when a new club was formed with the help of Bootle Council. The club initially played in the Liverpool Leagues until 1948 when the club were elected to the Lancashire Combination 2, which was won at the first attempt. The club was granted a new ground on Maguire Avenue (now known as Bootle Stadium). However, Bootle struggled in the top-flight and after several tough seasons withdrew and folded during the 1953– 54 campaign. In 1953, the current club was formed originally as Langton and played in the local leagues.

After a very successful spell in the Liverpool County Combination (which was won on numerous occasions) the club reverted back to its better known identity of Bootle FC in 1973. A year later the Bucks joined the Lancashire Combination, which was won in 1976 and 1977. Bootle then joined the Second Division of the Cheshire County League, which was won in our first season, and we were promoted to the First Division. In 1982 the Cheshire County League was one of the leagues that merged to form the North West Counties League, which Bootle duly joined, becoming a founder member of the First Division. The club spent most of their time in the First Division until 2000 when we unfortunately dropped into the Second Division. However, despite finishing 6th in 2002, the club, having to move away from Bucks Park on Copy Lane, dropped into the Liverpool County Combination. After several seasons of work behind the scenes and survival on the pitch the Bucks finally acquired a new home. In 2006 the club, with a new venue on a developing Vesty Road, the club were elected back into Division 2 of the North West Counties League. In 2009 Bootle won promotion to the NWCL Premier Division and also won the Championship under the guidance of Chris O’Brien. In 2009/10, our first season back in the NWCFL Premier Division Bootle finished a NWCFL highest placing of 3rd. In 2010/11 finished 6th place. They equalled the 3rd place again in 2012 this time with Neil Prince at the helm. Prince also lifted the Senior Cup as Bootle manager - the first to do so in 100 years. After an indifferent second season Prince was replaced by Joseph Doran. Doran has gone about to replenish the squad with exciting local young players and all at the club are hoping these lads fulfil their potential.
West and Irlam agree to Friday West will again host a Friday night game under the lights as they and newly promoted Irlam have agreed to reciprocate their respective games to be switched. Following the two fixtures having been initially been brought forward earlier in the week the two teams have confirmed that they will be brought forward a further 24 hours so that supporters can enjoy another game under the lights. West will travel to Irlam on Friday 2nd September, 7:45pm for the respective sides third ever meeting and first at Step 5 in the non-league Pyramid.
Night Lights
The two sides will meet a month later on Friday 7th October when West will be hosts at the Recreation Ground. West hosted their first ever Friday night fixture in April when they took on Maine Road in a game that was witnessed by more than 400 people. Chairman Glyn Meacher said: “Friday Night Football was an amazing experience as we witnessed a superb number of people down at the ground. It’s gone from the days of knowing everyone by their first name and it was great to see so many young people embrace the concept. We’re hoping that the second game will be as equally successful.”

Glasses, bottles, gas canisters, knives, darts, tools, flag poles or any other articles likely to cause injury are not permitted into the ground. Alcohol may be purchased and consumed in the bar area only. Children are not allowed in the Club House unless accompanied by an adult. Encroachment onto the playing area is forbidden at all times. Standing is not allowed in front of the seated areas. All forms of transport on the clubs car park is at the owners’ risk.

New Mills 1 West 4 match report… Tuesday 24th August
The first ever meeting between West and New Mills saw West leave the high peak with all three points securing a 4-1 win thanks to goals from Matty Kay, Mark Rogers and an Ash Woods brace. West made four changes from the weekends FA Cup exit as Ben Steer, Lee Gavin, Hayden Buckley-Smith and Jonny Poizer returned to the starting line-up. New Mills created the game’s first chance as Ben Halfacre headed into Hayden BuckleySmith’s hands when unmarked from a corner after just two minutes. Four minutes later West were ahead as Matty Kay curled a deep free kick from the right hand side and Ash Woods was on hand to head home back across the helpless New Mills goalkeeper. On 11 minutes West doubled their lead as a terrific cross field pass released Ben Steer who outpaced his marker, burst into the box and played the ball inside to Ash Woods who slotted past Oliver Martin into the bottom right hand corner. A minute later it was almost three as another cross field pass found Woods on the left; he reached the touchline pulling back his cross to Poizer who was only denied a certain goal by a superb challenge at the edge of the area. Moments later Ash Woods clipped the top of the crossbar with a header from a Steer throw in. West dominance continued as Steer curled an effort just wide after he was found on the right with another superb cross field pass. On 22 minutes Woods latched onto a header he won himself, drove into the area and forced a good save from Martin at the near post. On 32 minutes the New Mills goalkeeper was called into action again as he was forced into a save from Joe Shaw’s header from another excellent Matty Kay set piece. West made it 30 five minutes before half time when Mark Rogers, making his 100th appearance for West, reacted quickest to Steer’s throw heading into the corner at the near post. It could have got better for West on the stroke of half time as Woods cross from the left found Gavin at the far post but he volleyed over. New Mills went in search of a way back into the game early in the second half and almost

found one four minutes in as Ryan Hibbert went through one-on-one but, thinking he was offside, curled his shot over only to discover the flag had stayed down. Three minutes later they went close again from a cross but the header was well wide. However West remained dangerous on the attack as Woods headed just wide from another Kay free kick across the goal on 53 minutes. A minute later another superb attacking move saw Steer play in Woods but he was denied from a tight angle by a super block. The fourth goal arrived three minutes later as Kay found Woods with a pass at the edge of the area; the West forwards first touch turned his marker, he burst into the box only to see his shot saved by the Martin but the goalkeeper could only parry into the path of Kay who drilled home for his fourth goal of the season. West rang the changes as Paul Socha, Rick Gleave and Ben Woods replaced Rogers, Gavin and Steer. The enforced changes disrupted West’s rhythm as Buckley-Smith was called into action as he saved a hard shot from the left wing. Four minutes later Anthony Potts denied the Millers as his block deflected a goal bound effort over the bar after the home side had gone through on goal. New Mills pulled a goal back with 16 minutes remaining as they won a corner; the initial delivery was headed clear but only as far as the taker and the second delivery found Hibbert who turned the ball home from close range. West weren’t finished however as Ben Woods did well to cut inside from the wing and dragged a low shot just wide. A superb through ball from Gleave put Ben Woods through one-on-one but he was undone by a bobble and shanked his cross wide. BuckleySmith was called into action a final time with a minute remaining as New Mills broke the offside trap and the West goalkeeper denied a certain goal blocking the shot at the edge of the area. West weren’t to be denied as they secured three points in their first ever meeting against New Mills and were deservedly clapped off the field by the travelling West support.

West 1 Padiham 0 match action‌ Saturday 27th August West faced Padiham with both teams in good form. This was seen in a closely fought first half with the teams going for the break at 0-0. The second was very different with West in control forcing a number of great saves from the Padiham keeper. As the game looked to be heading for a draw substitute Rick Gleave put West ahead to record a fully deserved victory. Full match report will be in the next programme.

From the Leagues website… Interestingly this features tonight’s opponents Bootle, next Fridays opponents Irlam and ourselves! Bootle firepower to the fore One team who have begun the season firing impressively are Bootle, whose 5-1 win over Winsford United on Saturday took them to 19 goals in seven games since the start of the season, the highest of any club in the Premier Division. With three goals or more in four of their last five games, the Bucks certainly have their shooting boots on at the minute, and with the experienced striking power of Steve Jones and Ryan Cox up front, they look like being a force to be reckoned with as far as opposing defences are concerned. Defence best for West One team that has begun the season in a quietly efficient way are West Didsbury & Chorlton, whose victory over Padiham on Saturday moved them into fourth place in the Premier Division table. Three wins and a draw from four league games is a tidy start by any standards, but the secret so far has been their defensive performances with just three goals conceded, the best defensive record in the Division. They aren’t too shabby up front either, with eight goals scored in the four games, and it all paints a picture that suggests Steve Settle’s men could well improve on last season’s best ever League finish. A promising start for Irlam After stepping up to the Premier Division for the first time after promotion last season, Irlam manager Steve Nixon is happy with the start his side have made to their league campaign. Prior to Saturday's first league defeat of the season at Runcorn Linnets, Irlam had gone five
league games unbeaten - a decent start for anyone, especially a newly promoted team, and Steve is now looking for his side to build on their good start. “If you had said to us that we'd go our first five games unbeaten, we'd have said ‘wow’, but we know any game can turn so quickly and that is what we are seeing”, he said. Steve admits that the team exceeded expectations last season, but has resisted temptation to bolster the squad with new recruits, and has largely kept the same squad together for this new campaign. “I think promotion probably caught us by surprise a little bit. We were hoping for the play offs, that was our target, and we were 7th with about two months left. But we had games in hand and if you win and get a run going you can move right up, and we got in at the end. “In the summer, we were always going to look to sign one or two, but we know we have a tight knit squad, and teams have proved from professional level down that if you have a good tight knit squad you can probably outperform what you expect. “So we have really only signed one senior player who has come in, and we also have one or two others who were with us but have got new jobs and are now available. There’s also a couple of others who were injured and are now fit, so that has been a real bonus for us”. With many of the current squad having been at the club for several years, and Steve believes that policy of building from within is now starting to bear fruit. As far as the rest of the season is concerned, Steve believes his squad has the ability in their armoury to establish themselves as a Premier Division club.
