Welcome to Winsford United Good afternoon and welcome to today’s Hallmark Security League Premier Division game against Winsford United. We welcome their officials players and supporters and hope they enjoy our hospitality today. As this is our last scheduled home fixture before Christmas…we would like to wish everyone at the club and all our visitors today a very Merry Christmas. Our visitors arrive here today in 19th place in the league and on a run of indifferent form which has seen them take only 1 point from their last 6 games. However as we continue to discover there are no easy games in this league and we will have to be at our best today if we are to get a positive result. As fans may be aware Ashley Woods has left the club to re-sign for Trafford of the Evostik NPL. We thank Ash for his efforts over the past 2 seasons and wish him well for the future. His goals will certainly be missed and he knows he will be welcome back at the club any time. As a parting gift he was awarded the fans Player of the Month award for November. Ash’s final game provided a perfect example of what we are going to miss when he scored a terrific hat trick in the Lancashire Trophy win against Padiham. In what turned out to be an exciting end to end game, we once again led 2-0 at half time thanks to Ash’s 2 clinical finishes. We looked to be in full control when we went 4-1 up thanks to Ash's 3rd and a 1st goal from new signing Saul Henderson but Padiham refused to give up and got the score back to 4-3. At this point fans would no doubt have had a feeling of deja vu bearing in mind the number of games we have thrown away from winning positions, however after Deano made a superb penalty save to prevent Padiham equalizing Joe Shaw clinched the victory with a clinical free kick into the top corner. On Saturday we once again fell to a heartbreaking last second defeat at Congleton. In a game of few chances we felt we were the better team and we deservedly took the lead with Saul Henderson’s 2nd goal in successive games, a fierce drive from the edge of the box. However we let Congleton back into the game with a soft equalizer and just when we thought we had seen the game out for a well earned point we conceded with the last kick of the game. Who’s up next? Steve Settle’s Notes Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Brookburn Road for this Premier Division fixture against Winsford United. We hope that their officials, players and supporters enjoy the day and we wish them well for the 2nd half of the season. Lee has done a really good job of stabilising their team over the past 12 months or so and we can certainly expect a really tough game today. Since the last home game against Padiham a couple of weeks ago, a game in which we were very good going forward, lots has happened on and off the field that will affect us in the 2nd half of the season. Perhaps the biggest impact will be the loss of our forward Ash Woods. Following an outstanding performance and hat-trick in the Padiham game, we received notification of a 7 days approach from our near neighbours Trafford. I spoke with Ash and informed him of the interest and as an ambitious lad he was keen to speak with them. We then waived the notice period allowing Trafford to sign Ash and he has started the first 2 games for them. Whilst obviously a blow to us it’s really pleasing to see our players move up the pyramid. Ash’s contribution for our team over the past 18 months has been immense and he goes with our best wishes. He has scored an impressive 37 goals in that period however it is his work rate, effort and determination that I believe is his strongest attribute. We wish Ash all the success with Trafford and rest assured he knows he is more than welcome back with us at any time!! Ash’s move presents a great opportunity for the likes of Johnny Pozier and Saul to make the shirt their own. Johnny in particular has been extremely patient over the last couple of seasons but he will now get the chance to show what he is capable of. Saul is still settling in with the group but a couple of goals against Padiham and Congleton have been encouraging for myself and Brocks to see! It’s now up to them to make sure we don’t look to replace Ash. In addition to the opportunity it should serve as an example for some of our squad that have ambitions of climbing the pyramid themselves.

The likes of Nico, Ben Steer, Ben Woods, Rob Black, and Carlos are all young enough and talented enough to play higher. They need to learn from the example Ash was, particularly in terms of determination and work rate for the team and if they can learn, it will be interesting to see who can be the next player to progress will be. On the pitch, over the past 2 months, our performances, by and large, have been unacceptable. We have had lots of frank conversions in the dressing room about concentration and focus and application. Lots of the results can be attributed to individual errors and this was highlighted against Congleton. With a good dozen players unavailable we were still good value for our 1-0 lead and cruising when Jordan tried to head back to the goal keeper gifting them an equaliser. Their winner coming in the last second thanks to more lapses in concentration. There is no doubt in my mind that this is the most talented group of players we have ever seen at West. On our day we can beat anyone in our league and it’s important we develop some maturity and consistency that will see us finish the season in the top 6. Today’s games marks our Christmas Miracle game as we look to stock the Chorlton and Didsbury foodbank ahead of the festive period. It’s taken for granted sometimes but I cannot tell you all how proud I am of our committee and ever increasing supporters. We are hoping to become a real hub for all of the local community and fundraisers like this allows us to help those less fortunate than ourselves in our community over the festive period! West 2 AFC Liverpool 2 match report…Saturday 12 November It was a sense of déjà vu for West as for the second consecutive Saturday they were denied three points by surrendering a two goal lead at home. West welcomed an AFC Liverpool side to Brookburn Road who enjoyed wins of each of their previous three league visits. Another injury, this time to Ben Woods, saw Paul Socha recalled to the side whilst Jordan Poole was thrust in as emergency left back in place of Richmond Botchey. West started brightly and hit the outside of the post after just four minutes when Carlos Mendes Gomes released Ash Woods with a superb through ball and the West forward cannoned his shot off the outside of the post from a tight angle. West were gifted a lead on 10 minutes when Jordan Poole’s long ball found the head of Liverpool’s Michael White; the giant stopper tried to head back to his own goal but his header perfectly deceived goalkeeper Charles Saunders and could only watch as the ball rolled into the bottom corner. Three minutes later West doubled their lead as Matty Kay swung a free kick to the far post and Ash Woods rose highest to power in a header of the inside of the post for 2-0. He almost made it 3-0 on 34 minutes as a quick free kick from the left hand side released him at the near post but his effort cannoned off the underside of the crossbar. West continued to create chances as both Ben Steer and Kay forced efforts wide of the post shortly before half time. In the second half West created the early chance as a good move opened the Liverpool defence up but Joe Shaw could only fire into the keepers hands. Two minutes later

Liverpool pulled a goal back as a through ball found Emini Adenbengro in acres of space allowing him to round goalkeeper Dean Williams and slot home on 57 minutes. Six minutes later the woodwork was struck for the fourth time in the match as Jason Carey hit the outside of the post from a narrow angle for Liverpool. West continued to create chances as Nia Bayunu released substitute Saul Henderson with a superb pass on 65 minutes but the West forward could only fire into the hands of the keeper. Five minutes later Ash Woods picked him out with a superb cross field pass as Henderson raced 65 yards down field but could only fire his effort over the bar. Liverpool didn’t give up however as they continued to pressure the West defence. West went close again, relying on the counter, through Kay on 72 minutes when Shaw did superbly to lift the ball over his marker, pulling his pass back to the edge of the area with the West number 10s effort deflected just wide. Shaw then went close himself on 82 minutes when he powered an effort from the edge of the area just over the bar after a lay off from Henderson. A goal would come but, for the visitors, as West surrendered possession inside their own half, Adenbengro raced to the by-line pulling his cross to the far post allowing Freddie Champion a tap in at the far post. Both sides sought a winner but a point flattered neither side as West stretched their winless run to three matches.

History of Winsford United Winsford United have a long and proud history, having been formed way back in 1883. In those early days, the club was called Over Wanderers and competed in the Welsh Combination Football League. After a few seasons, the club changed to its present name and its present ground - Barton Stadium - although it was called Great Western Playing Field at the outset. The club brought on many good players during this period and after losing several players to Football League clubs, they experienced a somewhat unsuccessful spell that resulted in the club folding. United reformed in 1913 but it was short lived as World War One broke out. After the cessation of hostilities, United regrouped with under Mr R G Barton (hence Barton Stadium) and the club became a founder member of the Cheshire League, winning the Championship in its second season. After the war, United became a Limited company and the 1950’s saw the glory days on Non-League football when crowds of over 3000 were the norm. In 1959 Winsford won the Cheshire Senior Cup against Ellesmere Port Town in front of a 12,000 crowd at Gresty Road. Under John Williams in the 1970’s they had the most successful period in their history winning the Cheshire League and the Challenge Cup on several occasions. In 1974 they reached the Senior Cup final again, this time against the then-mighty Macclesfield Town. The final was an epic with three replays and the Silkmen only clinching it after extra time in the fourth match. All the ties were played in front of crowds of over 3,500. The Blues won the Cheshire Senior Cup again in 1980 with a 4-1 victory over local rivals Witton Albion. The goalkeeper in that final was Neville Southall. Season 1992/93 will go down in United’s folklore as Winsford United won an astonishing five trophies - the NPL Challenge Cup, NPL President’s Cup, Cheshire Senior Cup, MidCheshire Senior Cup and NPL Runners Up Cup. The Blues finished second to Southport and their points total is a record for the most points accrued without winning the title.

Winsford United have a pedigree of producing fine players who have gone on to perform at a higher level. The likes of Wayne Collins and Andy Oakes have come through the ranks, netting the club transfer fees and sell-on clauses which have been used to improve the infrastructure of the club amongst other things. A period of consolidation in the 2000’s was ended with relegation to Division Two, and with it, a change of policy to concentrate on recruiting and developing local talent. To this end Dave Twite was brought in as Manager in 2003 and three successful seasons followed, however, promotion was missed each season by just a single point. The Last Ten Seasons 2006/2007: Chris Willcock and John Flanagan took over the helm in 2006 and secured promotion. However, the duo moved on to Woodley Sports at the end of the season, taking with them the core of the side. 2007/2008, 2008/2009: This paved the way for two seasons under Joe Gibiliru and he marshalled the side to a respectable 12th place finish in the first season but the second season saw the Blues saved from relegation only in the last match of the campaign. 2009/2010: There followed an unsettled season that started with Terry Murphy in charge and then Mike Alcock and Tony Ledwards took over the reins. With relegation staring them in the face Dave Twite returned and along with Mike Alcock they saved the Blues from what had looked like certain relegation. 2010/2011: The club re-appointed former Manager Chris Willcock, who oversaw a successful start to the season, but in February there was to be a feeling of déjà vu when Willcock announced he was once again leaving to take charge at Woodley Sports, leaving Assistant Manager Ian Street in charge. The club finished the season in a creditable third place. A memorable night at the end of the campaign saw a 1-0 victory in the League Challenge Cup over promoted and hot favourites New Mills.
Winsford United History continued… 2012/2013: There followed a season with Ian Street in charge and the end of the campaign saw the team finish in a creditable seventh place. 2013/2014: In close season Lloyd Morrison took over the reins coinciding with plenty of good news off the pitch... Winsford Town Council became the club’s main sponsor, a relationship that promised to last for many years. The season was one of the most successful for years with the club finishing 5th in the league and defeating Northwich Victoria in the final of the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup. 2014/2015: However, with things on and off the pitch seemingly going so well the club was rocked when two weeks before the start of the season Lloyd Morrison announced he was going to Mossley AFC and he expected to take sixteen registered players with him. This led to an acrimonious situation between the two clubs with Mossley unable to register the players and Winsford refusing to allow their dual registration. Eventually an agreement was reached on Winsford’s terms. Eddy Haslam took over the hot seat and incredibly cobbled together a side to begin the campaign well, including runs in the FA Cup and FA Vase. However, a poor run of results saw Eddy leave by mutual consent paving the way for Rob Byrne to take charge of The Blues. There was also a satisfying end of season victory over Congleton Town in the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup.
2014-2015: Rob Byrne continued as manager in the next season which saw mixed fortunes but in the end the team finished in a respectable 12th place. 2015/2016: The summer of saw a frenzy of activity off the field with much work being undertaken on the pitch in the hope of resolving the problems with flooding that blighted much of the previous season, particularly important with 1874 Northwich agreeing to stay at the Barton Stadium for a further two seasons. The new season also saw two important developments within the community with an Under-21’s team being entered in the Cheshire Under-21’s League and the welcoming under the Winsford umbrella of Winsford Wolves VIFC, a visually impaired team. Three months into the season the Blues found themselves without a manager when promotion at work led to Manager Rob Byrne reluctantly resigning the post. Although there were several high profile applicants the position was handed to long time Winsford stalwart Lee Duckworth and he took over as Player/Manager. He immediately began rebuilding the team and concentration was placed on fitness and discipline. The Blues finished the season in fourteenth place. There was no hesitation in appointing the same management team for the new season and there was clearly a policy of bringing more local players through although still retaining the players who had performed well in the previous campaign.

History of West…PART 7 – The Thirties Unfortunately there is a gap in the playing records of the seasons 1932-33, 1933-34 and 1934-35, which means there is no accurate picture of how the club fared during this time. We do know that West reached the Rhodes Cup Final for the third time in their history, but we have no details of how this occurred. The L & C League records do show that it was third time unlucky in 1934 and that South Salford lifted the trophy. This was no disgrace and certainly no surprise as the same League records show that South Salford were 1st Division champions from 1925-26 to 1936-37 (twelve successive seasons) and at the same period won the Rhodes Cup on 6 successive occasions from 1930-31 to 1935-36, a record which no other club is ever likely to equal. It appears that the mid-thirties were not the happiest of times for the club, and the record of the AGM held in St. Luke’s School, Burton Road, on 5 May 1936, reveals that things were not what they should have been, particularly on the financial side. Treasurer Johnny Edwards reported a loss on the season which he had

borne out of his own pocket. The secretary criticised the loss, and that a section of the members had apparently made little effort towards meeting the deficit. He thought it was 'a very poor appreciation of the Treasurer’s efforts and generosity’ and intimated that he himself was ‘not prepared to carry on with his duties unless these members showed better appreciation of their duty to the club’. The report continued to mention the poor performances on the field and the fact that relegation had just been avoided, but that in distressing circumstances he thought the loyalty of the players should be placed on record, whilst criticising a minority on the committee for their poor attendance at 2nd XI away games. As a result, a number of committee members stepped down, and those who remained faced the challenge of stabilising the club. A small body of players were asked to formulate schemes for the raising of revenue as early as possible.

Congleton Town 2 West 1 match report…Saturday 3 December A depleted West Didsbury & Chorlton made it four straight league games without a win as they succumbed to a 94th minute stoppage time winner at Congleton Town.

West headed into the game off the back of the news of Ash Woods mid-week move to Trafford and were further rocked by the absences of Anthony Potts, Joe Shaw and Rick Gleave. However they were boosted by the return to fitness of both Club Captain Mark Rogers and Ben Woods following long lay-offs; however both would have to settle for a place on the bench.
West started the second half quicker than they’d started the first as Poizer curled a free kick just over from 20 yards out to open the second half. On 55 minutes Black saw a hard effort parried away by Heywood who did superbly to deny Poizer, quickest to react to the loose ball, by scrambling to pounce on the ball. West’s early pressure was rewarded on 56 minutes when a superb through ball from Ben Steer released Henderson on the right and he did well to power a hard effort under the Congleton goalkeeper from the edge of the area.
With so many absentees West Manager Steve Settle handed Saul Henderson his first start since joining from Maine Road with Matty Kay deployed in the unusual holding midfield role in front of a make shift centre half pairing of Martyn Andrews and Jordan Poole. It was a hard fought game with little of goal mouth incident in the opening exchanges as a bumpy surface failed to prove conducive to open football. The first attempt on goal came on 21 minutes as a lovely pass from Matty Kay found Rob Black who attempted to lob Congleton goalkeeper Ross Heywood but the Congleton stopper made a good save. A minute later Nic Evangelinos chested down a high ball into the path of Henderson but his shot was deflected wide for a corner. At the other end West goalkeeper Dean Williams did well to dive onto a loose ball inside the six yard box after Congleton were allowed to bring down a corner at the near post. Evangelinos, Black and Jonny Poizer would all have chances before the end of the half but none could stretch the goalkeeper with

The lead lasted eight minutes as disaster struck from West when a harmless high ball was launched into the West penalty area and Poole’s header back towards Williams struck his own shoulder allowing Declan Fletcher to pounce and fire under the helpless West goalkeeper. It was a brutal blow for West who’d been in control of the game and a devastating mistake from the 20 year old who otherwise had an assured game in his makeshift position. The last 20 minutes saw little in the way of goal mouth action with Congleton buoyed by their goal. The winner came in the 94th minute as a ball was fired into the West penalty area and Rick Bailey was allowed to simply roll an effort into the bottom right hand corner from a narrow angle to send the home support into raptures. It was harsh on West who’d been the better side from much of the game but another costly reminder of the price for lapses in concentration.

Women's Team update… West Didsbury & Chorlton are delighted to confirm its intention to field a Women’s team from the beginning of 2017/18 season. The agreement was made following the AGM on November 7th as part of the clubs ongoing vision as a sustainable community driven football club. Club Secretary & Media Officer Rob McKay said; “It’s a great opportunity for the football club to grow. We’ve made great strides on the men’s side of the game in the last five years establishing ourselves in the NWCFL, Cheshire League and NWYA and this gives another opportunity to increase our footballing influence.” “Chorlton has a strong Women’s football tradition and the women’s game continues to make great strides since the last World Cup
and the offering of Women’s football has always been in the clubs development plan.” The club is currently working behind the scenes and will announce more details via the club website in due course as things are made official. Today’s Match Sponsor: Dave Cooper We are very grateful to Dave for sponsoring todays’s match against Winsford United. Dave is a West man through and through; he joined West Didsbury, as it was then called, in late 1979 just after his 29th birthday. Dave got his big chance as a substitute for the second team at Christie’s playing field. Fortunately the left back was injured and Dave took his place and made it his own. Later that season, he broke into the first team. The next season, West took on a new first team manager who had played with Dave in the past and as a consequence his games for the first team were few and far between. So for most of the next ten seasons, Dave played left back for the seconds. However, players were short one weekend and the second team manager pushed Dave into midfield, on his birthday no less, and he scored two magnificent goals. The second team manager was a certain R.Turley and apparently he doesn’t like people outscoring
him so Dave was back to left back the next game. Dave won second team player of the year award. It was presented to him by a new Manchester Utd manager; A. Ferguson. One of the highlights of Dave’s career was winning the Clubman of the year and having it presented by Bobby Charlton at Old Trafford. Dave left the club in 1999 after it had relocated and established itself at Brookburn Road but after a few years watching Burnley, decided to return to the now called ‘West Didsbury and Chorlton AFC’ and help out on committee. Victories for NWCFL clubs at grounds of Northern League opponents have become increasingly rare in recent years, given that clubs in the North East value progress in the FA Vase ahead of progress through the National League system, and set their stall out accordingly. He followed up his two goals at Litherland REMYCA in midweek with a hat trick at Stockport Town on Saturday, taking his total to 26 goals for the season so far, which includes 11 in the last five games. He’s setting the bar high at the moment, but while he’s in this sort of form, Daisy Hill with Ashley in the ranks will be a force to be reckoned with for anyone in Division One. Cobbydalers on a roll It’s looking like there’s something stirring up in the Aire Valley, and the rumblings are of a footballing revival down Keighley Road way, as Silsden start to pick up some momentum under recently appointed manager Danny Forrest. Saturday’s emphatic 6-0 win at AFC Blackpool made if four wins out of six and three straight victories, with Saturday’s league win nicely bookending a Macron Cup win over Premier Division 1874 Northwich, and an equally impressive West Riding Cup triumph over FC Halifax Town in midweek – the same FC Halifax Town who played in the Second Round of the FA Cap at Eastleigh on Sunday. The Cobbydalers still have a bit of ground to make up to get within touching distance of the First Division play offs, but if they carry on at this rate, they won’t be far off before long.
