Editorial & Welcome to… Squires Gate Today we welcome Squires Gate to The Recreation Ground for this seasons return fixture between our two clubs following our best away win so far in the away game in Blackpool in mid October. That came as we were beginning to put a more consistent run of results together and scoring freely, but since that game we’ve seen our interest in the MEN United Challenge Cup, FA Vase, and the Lancs FA Challenge Trophy all come to an end. Disappointingly all three defeats came in games here at home in successive weeks when we’ve struggled to impose ourselves on visiting opponents. The harsh reality is that our home form in the league has resulted in 9 points from the 9 home games to date whereas on the road we’ve collected 16 points to lift us into the top half of the table. Last Saturday we travelled to Birkenhead through incessant rain to play Cammell Laird, and fortunately their pitch held up pretty well throughout and our composed display saw us return with all 3 points after a 1-0 win. The team performance was excellent throughout and but for some excellent goal keeping from the Lairds skipper the margin of victory would have been even greater. We’ve already said that our best result was the away game at ‘Gate’ in October when the goals came with a late flurry towards the end of each half, and since then today’s visitors results have picked up significantly under new manager Danny Penswick. The former Blackpool, Fleetwood, Leigh Genesis and AFC Fylde player is in his third season with the club and in their last 3 league outings ‘Gate’ have been scoring freely and notched up 3 successive wins. They started with a thumping 5-0 away win at Maine Road and followed that up with home wins over Padiham 3-1 and Darwen 6-3. These results have lifted them out of the bottom three but in the past 2 weeks their games away at Cammell Laird and Nelson and home to Winsford United have all been postponed. They will be raring to get playing again today to try to add to their points tally and keep moving in the right direction.

DEVELOPING OUR CLUB We’ve had a lot of challenges over the past few seasons since joining the NWCFL and competing in the FA Cup and FA Vase and further improving the ground to meet Premier Division requirements for additional seating and covered standing for spectators. We also have planning permission to expand the clubhouse which is a significant project but which would offer much improved facilities for our supporters and visiting spectators. We want to share plans with our regular supporters and get your feedback and hear any other ideas you might have for further improvements. Consequently, next Saturday, 28th November, after the fixture against Congleton Town, we plan a brief open meeting for supporters. We will have the plans of the proposed extension available then and a number of Committee members will be available to answer any questions and also receive supporters suggestions on how we might improve the club generally. We hope to see you again then but if you can’t make it but want to make suggestions, then please drop an e-mail via the club website at www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk And last but not least … ENJOY TODAY’S GAME and THANK YOU FOR YOUR ONGOING SUPPORT WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

Steve Settle’s Notes Good afternoon everyone and welcome to this afternoons league fixture against Squires Gate. I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome Danny Penswick, his management team, players, club officials and fans to Brookburn Road for what promises to be an entertaining game. It’s only a month ago that we made the trip to Blackpool to play the reverse fixture. On that day we were superb and ran out 4-0 winners. It was arguably the best performance I have been involved with at West and I’ll be looking for a similar performance from the lads today! Since that result Danny has turned things around and Squires Gate come into this game in good form after winning their last 3 games. Last week’s game saw us bring 3 points back from the Wirral, following our disappointing showing against Atherton Colls, after beating Cammell Laird 1-0 via a Matty Kay penalty. Anyone who was at the game would be able to tell you that 1-0 really flattered the hosts as the lads put in a professional display, well marshalled by our returning skipper Mark Rogers. Mark makes a big difference to our team when he plays. His experience and ability in midfield really sets the tone for our pattern of play and when he is unavailable we really miss him! Much of the talk this week has been setting targets for the remainder of the season. As we approach the half way point I believe we are a better team now than when we started the season and I firmly believe that we have a team good enough of beating anyone on our day! We have plenty of goals in the squad now, indeed we have surpassed our goal tally from last season and we are still in November! I’m really looking for the lads to kick on from here.

Our target needs to be 70 points in the league which should earn us a top 6 finish. That would represent significant progress for our club ahead of setting further ambitious targets next year. I’d like to take the opportunity to welcome new signing Joe Shaw to the club on duel registration from Glossop. Joe is yet another player that I have played with, this time at Mossley, and he will bring great quality to the middle of the park. Joe is an all action midfielder with a great range of passing and an eye for goal, he will be a real asset for the time he is with us. He also represents a great opportunity for some of our younger players to learn from Joe what it takes to be successful at higher levels. Jordan Poole, Ben Steer, Ash Woods, and Nic Evangelinos, amongst others, all have the potential to go on and have great semi-pro careers and it is important that they learn from players like Joe about the increasing levels of professionalism expected from clubs at the next level. I’d also like to thank our loyal band of fanatics for their support this season. The lads really appreciate it and if we can continue to play the attacking football we have tried to play thus far this season then I hope we will steadily grow our fan base further! Thanks for the support and enjoy the game!

New for Christmas Our photographer, Graham Currey has come up with an offer from which the club will also benefit. He is happy to produce framed pictures of players. Examples of these are in the clubhouse, if anyone is interested in these or has a request for a particular picture to be taken, please discuss this with Graham or one of the programme team.

West 0 Atherton Collieries 4…match report West crashed out of the Lancashire FA Trophy at the first stage and slumped to their heaviest home defeat since 2013 as they were demolished 4-0 by Atherton Collieries. Manager Steve Settle made two changes from last Tuesday’s defeat at 1874 Northwich as Ben Steer and Mark Rogers replaced Rick Gleave and Kelvin Lugsden but otherwise named the strongest team available to him. The game started brightly as both teams were intent on attacking from the start and it was the visitors who had the game’s first chance when Ben Hardcastle fired a shot from a narrow angle on the right hand side which was well held by Hayden Buckley-Smith in the West goal after just six minutes. Two minutes later West responded with a great chance of their own as Ben Steer’s long throw found Matt Eckersley at the far post but his header was superbly pushed over the bar by Steve Dryden in the Colls goal. On 10 minutes Colls again forced Buckley-Smith into a save as he parried a Mark Battersby free kick from the edge of the box round the post. The frenetic pace of the opening exchanges continued as both defences made significant blocks to prevent further chances however it was Colls who went ahead on 26 minutes after they were awarded a penalty for a push from behind inside the six yard box. It was a needless decision to make by West as the ball had carried on through to the goalkeeper but Mark Battersby made no mistake with the penalty and smashed it high into the roof of the net. Four minutes later it was 2-0 as a diagonal pass was intercepted by Anthony Potts however it slipped under his boot and into the path of Jordan Cover. Buckley-Smith came out of his goal to narrow the angle but the distance was to great and Cover was able to simply take it round him and pass it into an empty net from 12 yards out. On 36 minutes the game was put beyond doubt as Hardcastle was allowed freedom to cut inside of the right and unleash a fierce drive inside the far left hand post to give Colls a comprehensive three goal lead. West tried to rally and should have got themselves back in the game when Dryden could only palm away another long throw by Steer but West failed to re-act the second ball

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

was blocked for a corner. Colls could have made it 4-0 before the break as someone terrific footwork from Cover in the middle released a pass to Brad Cooke on the right and his first time volley just missed the target. Settle made a change at half time replacing Rogers with the returning Gary Lilley as he looked to find a foothold in the game. West were the brighter of the teams in the early moments of the second half and should have got themselves a goal back on 53 minutes when Steer cut inside from the right and fired a left footed shot into top right hand corner but it was excellently parried away by Dryden. On 61 minutes came arguably West’s best move of the game as some lovely one touch football through the middle found Nic Evangelinos on the left but his shot from a narrow angle was again blocked by the Colls goalkeeper. West made a double change as Rick Gleave and Adam Hilton replaced Matty Kay and Steer as they looked to add fresh impetus. Despite the scoreline the game was still fiercely contested as neither side allowed the other a moment on the ball. There was even a moment of refereeing common sense when Lee Gavin was penalised for a lunging challenge, in the tangle he was accidently trodden on and despite a coming together of both teams, the referee took the sensible option and talked to all three players involved without showing a card. On 75 minutes Colls, cruising, went close again with Battersby firing over from a narrow angle. From the goal kick, the ball was flicked on into the path of Evangelinos by again Dryden prevented the goal blocking the shot from the one-on-one attempt. From the corner, the initial attempt was cleared but the ball found its way to Gleave on the far side who cannoned his shot from a tight angle against the outside of the post. Colls continued to threaten and almost made it four in the 88th minute as Matt Grimshaw’s far post header from a corner was cleared off the line. Gary Lilley fired a 25 yarder just over before Colls added a fourth with literally the last kick of the game when Dave Sherlock drilled home a rebound from inside the six yard box. The result wrapped up a disappointing night for West who recorded their fourth straight loss and exited their third cup competition in the space of three weeks.

West v Atherton Collieries… match action

WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

Cammell Laird 0 West 1‌match report On a wet Saturday afternoon in Birkenhead West ended a run of four successive losses with an accomplished 1-0 win over Cammell Laird 1907. Having lost comprehensively in mid-week at home to Atherton Collieries West manager Steve Settle handed a debut to new signing Joe Shaw, newly arrived from Glossop North End, and gave Yahya Saeed his first start since being forced off injured in the reverse fixture in October. Despite the weather the pitch was in good condition with no standing water but the referee took the surface into account playing advantage in the opening minutes after Yahya flew into a challenge but advantage was given as the Lairds right back Simon raced forward crossed into the middle but despite being unmarked the striker blazed the shot of out of the ground. An early let off for West. Two minutes later West had a great chance of their own as a free kick from the right was whipped across the box, the knock down fell to Yahya but he could only hook his shot over the bar from 8 yards out. Both sides made further chances, albeit without troubling the goalkeeper as first Ash Woods turned on the edge of the area and fired his shot just wide before Lairds dragged a shot just wide from the edge of the West penalty area. West were having much of the game and were awarded a penalty on 17 minutes when Woods was tripped in the area, he tried to stay on his feet to fire of a shot but the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Despite protestations from the home bench, players and fans that 'he'd not even gone to ground', Matty Kay duly dispatched the penalty down the middle to vanquish the memory of his miss against 1874 Northwich and give West the perfect reward for their bright start. From there West took control of the game and played some fine football through the middle as debutant Shaw combined well with Mark Rogers and Lee Gavin in midfield as they worked tirelessly with the front three of Kay, Woods and Nic Evangelinos who never stopped running, pressing Laird's high up the field and forcing them to play long. West were unfortunate not to go into the second half further in front but for a superb diving tackle by Liam Simon to deny Evangelinos after he was put through one-

on-one. The narrow margins of the game were evident a minute before half time as Cammell Laird's forced their first shot on target when a long range shot was diverted into the path of Hayden Buckley-Smith in the West goal. Laird's first shot on target came in the last minute of the first half but their second came in the first minute of the second half as Buckley-Smith was called into action to block a close range shot at his near post. The subsequent corner was then headed off the line as the home side looked to address their half time deficit. However West weren't holding on and on 50 minutes should have made it 2-0 when Evangelinos broke the offside trap and his low shot ricocheted off the inside of the post with Kay quickest to the rebound, however, with the whole goal to aim at his low shot was palmed away brilliantly by the Cammell Laird goalkeeper Langley whilst Kay protested to the linesman that it had crossed the line. Just before hour mark Gavin broke through but despite being one-on-one shanked his difficult left footed shot wide of the near post. A moment later West went close again as Woods raced to the byline after a run down the right, his pass found Kay whose shot was only parried by the goalkeeper and only a terrific block prevented the rebound from being poked home. That was the end of the significant chances in the game as the heavy pitched caused the fast tempo of the game to finally relent, but not the end of the drama as the Lairds goalkeeper was shown a red card with two minutes remaining. A fine ball over the top released sub Ben Steer, the young forward went to lift his shot over the goalkeeper who'd raced out of his goalmouth. The keeper tipped the ball clear but the linesman flagged for handball. After deliberation with the linesman the referee showed him a straight red. Sadly West wasted the free kick, hitting it straight at the wall but despite late pressure from the 10 men of Cammell Laird and whilst maybe not pretty on the eye to the neutral West claimed a well earned three points on their first trip to Birkenhead.

Thank you

Chorlton for your support at our Community Bonfire Evening

‌especially all those families who supported us on 6th November. The event was a great success as well over 500 people flooded through the Brookburn Road gates to enjoy the giant bonfire and impressive fireworks display. Thank you also for those who took time to send us such favourable feedback. Our special thanks must go to the many volunteer helpers, who worked to get the clubhouse prepared and tirelessly through the evening‌ and were still around to clear the clubhouse, ground and make the bonfire safe and tidy afterwards! Refreshments were available throughout the evening, including seasonal fare such as mulled wine and parkin. Players and coaches from our new junior teams also set up a confectionery stand as a fundraiser.

We were pleased to welcome our local MP Jeff Smith, Local Councillors from Newman and Strong from Chorlton, Midgley and Rawson from Chorlton Park, Ian Violet from Chorltonville owners committee and Dave Bishop from Friends of Chorlton Meadows as well as many of our first team players. We hope many of our visitors take advantage of the leaflet handed out on the evening offering discounted entry to upcoming home games, it will great to see new faces return to the club in the future!

Looking back our feature on Football History No 14 We all know about the exploits of the giants that are Manchester United and Manchester City. Across the country, and even the world, iconic places and people like Old Trafford, Maine Road, Bert Trautman and George Best are regularly spoken of with fondness and reverence. But Manchester has seen a great many more interesting pieces of footballing history. Here, we explore some of the lesser known aspects of Manchester's rich tapestry of football history.

The Butcher’s Arms For some clubs, playing at a ground nicknamed "the abattoir" or "the slaughterhouse" may not be ideal, but then again, a stadium named after a pub may be many fans' dreams.

At this time, the pitch and its stands were actually rotated by a 90 degree angle, all in order to solve a drainage problem which had apparently afflicted the pitch since its establishment.

This is indeed the case for Droylsden F.C, whose home ground the Butcher's Arms is one of the most historic venues in Manchester.

The Butcher's has seen a number of interesting events during its time, including the antics of (as mentioned previously in this series) the first ever men's game featuring female football managers. Droylsden fans like to reconnect with their history, and at one home game every year, they dress in white overalls and hairnets, spreading red sawdust representing blood about the terraces. In previous years, real blood was used!

First built in 1892 by the landlord of the Butcher's Arms pub, the 3,500 capacity stadium has been in continuous use ever since its construction. Whilst the original tenants were the present day Droylsden F.C, they were banished from their spiritual home for a seven year period when the lease for the ground was sold to a club by the name of Droylsden United. However, when the local council bought the lease to the ground in 1952, it was deemed that there was room for only one club in Droylsden, and the two clubs merged, meaning that once again, a club named Droylsden F.C played at the Butcher's Arms.

When Droylsden were lucky enough to have their FA Cup tie against Leyton Orient, fans around the world witnessed an utterly bizarre pitch invasion as Droylsden faithful stormed the pitch dressed in full butcher regalia! Perhaps here at West we can start taking suggestions on a favourite Chorlton pub to rename the ground after, though I think we may be taking it a bit too far if the Rob Turley Stand ends up drenched in blood.

History of Squires Gate Blackpool & District Amateur League: 1958 to 1961 Squires Gate were formed in 1948 as Squires Gate British Legion FC and competed in the Blackpool & District Amateur League. They won the leagues Rawling Shield in their first season. The name of the club was changed to Squires Gate FC in 1953. They won the leagues First Division in 1955–56 and 1956–57; also the Blackwell Cup in 1958–59 and 1959–60. They spent the 1960–61 in the Fylde District League, winning the Fylde Cup and losing finalists in the Bannister Cup. West Lancashire League: 1961 to 1991 The following season they moved up to the West Lancashire League where they spent the next thirty years. From 1961 until 1980 they were in Division Two and were promoted in 1981 as champions. In the 1986–87 season they won the Richardson Cup. North West Counties Leage: 1991 onward They were elected into the North West Counties Football League for the 1991–92 season, joining Division Two for the 1991–92 season. Squires Gate won the leagues Fair Play Award for the 1993–94 season and were losing finalists in the 1997–98 Division Two Trophy. They won the 2001–02 season Division Two Trophy and then the following season they missed the runner-up spot on goal difference but were still promoted to Division One following the demise of Stand Athletic who had originally been promoted as Division Two champions. They reached their highest league placing in the 2005–06 season also reaching the quarter finals of the FA Vase then last season, under the Management of Andy Clarkson, Gate improved still further on their best ever placing, finishing sixth in what is now the Premier Division.

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

On 10 March 2007 Squires Gate played a home match against FC United of Manchester at Curzon Ashton F.C.s ground. The club had approached Blackpool F.C. about playing the game at Bloomfield Road but the ground was not available. And so they played the match in Ashton-under-Lyne, as it was felt that FCUM fans were more likely to attend with the match being staged in the Greater Manchester area. A crowd of 1,650 saw Squires Gate lose 0-1 and Squires Gate earned about £7,000. To cap a very impressive 2007-08 season, Squires Gate were delighted that no less than nine of their members were honoured with long service awards: Albert Hamer, George Diggle, Roy Westhead, Brian Hugill and Brian Addison all collected Football Association Order of Merit mementos for 50 years service; and Steve Bellamy, Mick Farrer, John Maguire and Tony Hornby received 30 years awards from the Lancashire FA. All these stalwarts are still active in the service of their Club. Groundsman Brian Addison was judged the best at our level in the Northern Region, and a magnificent third nationally at the FA Groundsman of the Year presentations in London last September, and his pitch is clear evidence of his commitment. As Chairman Stuart Hopwood said, " We believe in a sure and steady programme of improvement of our facilities, and we now feel that with an award winning pitch, dressing rooms which are amongst the best in the League, and a pleasant, air-conditioned Clubhouse, we have a lot to be proud of, and the future looks good for Squires Gate FC. Dave McCann was appointed manager towards the end of the 2012/13 season and has endured premier survival since taking charge. He is assisted by Richard Thomas and Mark Shaw. Season 20014/15 was the most successful in the NWCFL finishing in 6th place with a record number of point.

Our last meeting on 17th October‌ Squires Gate 0 West 4 West manager Steve Settle was able to recall Richmond Botchey back from injury and into the starting line up in place of injured Yaya Saeed whilst he reshuffled the front four handing Ben Steer a start on the right wing. Captain Mark Rogers replaced Poole in midfield whilst there were places in the squad for Scott Mason and Lewis Schofield. If the manager was looking to ensure that the shakeup would remove any hangover from the game against Cammell Laird game it had an immediate impact as West created the games first chance inside 60 seconds when Matty Kay fired just over the bar from 30 yards. It was a signal of intent for West who created another chance from the resulting goal kick. West's dominance didn't relent throughout the entirety of the first half and should have made it 1-0 on 7 minutes when Woods burst down the right forcing the Squires Gate keeper Fletcher into a block at his near post. On 18 minutes the Squires Gate goalkeeper was forced into another good save, this time from Gavin as he was played in with a wonderful lay off from Kay. From the corner West threatened again as Matt Eckersley headed a difficult chance over. After the initial onslaught Squires Gate brought themselves into the game and worked Hayden Buckley-Smith when a well worked free kick found Mark Buchan at the edge of the penalty are but the West goalkeeper saved comfortably. The respite for Squires Gate was brief as on 33 minutes West had a great chance cleared off the

line from a Mark Rogers first time shot after a Woods pull back. Two minutes later Evangelinos, again cut inside from the left and fired a rising shot to the near post from the edge of the penalty area which the Squires Gate goalkeeper could only tip round the post. From the corner, it was initially cleared but it fell back to the taker Matty Kay, he made no mistake with the cross, curling a wonderful ball into the middle and Ben Steer added the touch as the ball crept inside the far post to give West a deserved one-nil lead on 36 minutes. On the verge of half time a ball was played over the right full back to Steer, 30 yards out he saw the goalkeeper off his line and brilliantly lobbed him with a first time effort to give West a deserved 2-0 half time lead and for Steer, a real collectors item of a goal. As West kicked off the second half the travelling support may have been forgiven for expecting an avalanche of goals but it was not the case as, to their credit, Squires Gate responded and had the half's first chance as a 30 yard over the shoulder volley was deflected wide for a corner. Squires Gate didn't give up and had their best chance on 71 minutes when a corner was headed just over at the far post. However there would be no comeback for Squires Gate and Evangelinos secured the three points on 82 minutes when he cut inside from the right hand side and fired a rocket of a shot into the bottom right hand corner. West weren't finished and added a fourth in the final minute as Rogers casually finished with his left foot past the Squires Gate keeper to give him his first goal of the season.
