Editorial & Welcome to… Morpeth Town Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The Recreation Ground for what is one of the biggest games in our club history. A particular welcome to the management, players, committee and supporters of Morpeth Town who have made the long 170 mile journey from the north east. It is our pleasure to welcome a Northern League team to The Recreation Ground for the first time in our history and we look forward to an enjoyable game and wish you all a safe journey back to Northumberland after the game. Morpeth Town were founded in 1894 following the amalgamation of Morpeth United and Morpeth FC. They played their home matches at Stobhill Cricket Field and joined the Northern Football Alliance in the 1936-37 season. The club then moved home to Storey Park in 1954 and 30 years later in 1983-84 season they were the Northern Football Alliance Champions amd in 1986 won the Northern Alliance Challenge Cup as well as the Benevolent Bowl. In 1994 the club moved to their current home, Craik Park and again won the Northern Alliance title and with it promotion to the Northern League Division Two for 1994-95 season. In 1995-96 they were promoted to Division One as champions and in their first season in Division One finished in sixth place and were runners-up in the Northumberland Senior Cup. This season sees them celebrate 20 years in the Northern League’s top division so this is an experienced and established club who have more than held their own in recent seasons and who currently are currently riding high at the top of Division 1 of the very high quality and competitive Northern League. They have an unbeaten away record going into today’s game having won 5 and drawn 2 of their 7 away league games scoring 17 and conceding 7 at the time of going to print.

They have already beaten Padiham from the Counties League 4-1 in the first qualifying round and then won away at Billingham Synthonia 1-0 to reach today’s first round proper. So today we are facing probably one of the toughest challenges we have had as a club to date, shake off last weekend’s aberration and pull out all the stops to get a result today. THE MAGIC OF THE CUP There is something about a cup tie, and that means any cup tie, when the form book is irrelevant and underdogs triumph when it’s least expected. That was certainly the case as we found out to our cost last weekend when an under strength West team just didn’t get to grips with a determined opposition despite having a dream start with an opening goal after two minutes. In the match programme we warned that ‘we are facing a determined team who never give up and we need to be on our game as we know anything can happen in the cup …. Well it did as we found out to our cost in the 90 th minute as Eccleshall scored a last gasp winner. Today it’s our turn to start the game as underdogs but maybe we can use that to our advantage and get what would be a huge result for the club. If the scores are level at the end of the game then extra time will be played. If a replay is necessary then this will be at Morpeth next Wednesday evening, kick off 8pm. Steve Settle’s Notes Good afternoon and welcome to Brookburn Road for this afternoons FA Vase 1st Round fixture against Morpeth. We hope that their officials, players and fans enjoy our hospitality and, after today of course, we wish them well for the rest of the season. Today’s game represents, arguably, our biggest game in the history of the club. Following our media attention grabbing 15-1 win in the last round against Dinnington Town the draw makers couldn’t really have handed us a tougher draw. I’ve said in the past that national competitions like the FA Vase are amazing competitions for clubs at our level. Alongside the obvious financial benefits of prize money, the chance to meet teams that we wouldn’t ordinarily play helps us to build relationships and friendships in the non-league community. Morpeth are currently top of the EBAC Northern league with a game in hand on 2nd place Shildon. Just for some context North Shields, last year’s FA Vase winners are currently 4th, 9 points behind today’s opponents having played 3 games more!! Put into simple terms today will just about be as tough as it gets at our level. With 5 of the last 6 Vase winners coming from the Northern League it goes to show how strong their league is and every one of our lads will have to be at their best today to get the right result. Although I don’t want to dwell on last week too much it was disappointing for us to be knocked out of the league cup against Eccleshall. After a positive start and early goal through Rick Gleave, we were unable to really stamp our authority on the game. I used the game to give some of our fringe players the chance to stake a claim and show what they can do. Unfortunately some players didn’t take that opportunity. Having said that I couldn’t really have asked for more from the lads in the month of October.
We have started to score goals and win games and we come into the game today with great confidence. In particular I’ve been delighted by the amount of goals we have scored and the different goal scorers we have had. We are not reliant on 1 player to stick the ball in the back of the net and this helps the confidence of the lads. If we can replicate some of the individual and collective performances of the past month I’m sure we will cause our visitors a few problems today. We have been desperately looking forward to the game since the draw was made and I know I speak for all of the lads when I say we are eager to give a good account of ourselves and progress further in the competition. In other news we have re-signed winger Adam Hilton from Runcorn Linnets and Adam will go straight into the squad for today’s game. Adam is extremely talented, as anyone who saw him play for us last season will testify and we are looking to get him enjoying his football again. I firmly believe that Adam, like a number of our squad, has the ability to play higher up the football pyramid and I’m looking forward to seeing him prove that over the rest of this season. In addition to Adam’s arrival we have a couple of players leaving the club. Dan Russell and Jamie Walden have both been released and we thank them for their efforts and wish them well for the future. West 1 Eccleshall 2 …match report West exited the MEN United Cup at the first hurdle as they lost 2-1 at home to Eccleshall thanks to a 92nd Oliver Jepson winner. West manager Steve Settle made eight changes from the side that won at home to Nelson in mid-week as he welcomed back Scott Mason and Rick Gleave into the starting XI whilst there were also rare starts for Steve Brockley, Dan Russell, Jonny Poizer and Saul Lomax-Newton in goal. The team started brightly and were ahead with their first attack after three minutes as Matty Kay’s shot from the edge of the penalty area was blocked but it fell into the path of Gleave who tucked it away from close range. From there, given West’s recent form it had everyone wondering how many as on 13 minutes Jonny Poizer broke the offside trap but dragged his shot wide from the edge of the penalty area. On 17 minutes Russell fired a 25 yard effort just wide of the post before two minutes later good play from Kay in the middle fed Russell on the right, whose low cross was drilled along the floor just evading Poizer at the far post. On 23 minutes West went close again as another low cross, this time from the left by Poizer found Gleave; his shot was blocked and in the ensuing scramble West had a shot somehow cleared off the line. A minute later a Matt Eckersley header was cleared off the line but a brilliant tackle denied Gleave inside the penalty area one-one-one. However on 27 minutes the two sides were level as the Eccleshall right back Callum Whittaker was allowed to advance down the right, his thunderous shot rocketed off the underside of the cross bar and fell kindly to Angelo Enrico who calmly tapped home the rebound with an open goal at his mercy. If the goal had come against the run of play then the visitors certainly made up for it as they dominated the remainder of the first half with West the slightly more relieved of the two to hear the half time whistle as Eccleshall had two big chances before the break. The first came on 35 minutes as a low cross evaded everyone bar right winger Max Linakar whose volley from inside the six yard box somehow flashed past the far post and moments later Jepson missed

a great chance heading, un-marked into the hands of Lomax-Newton. In the second half West, who’d looked disjointed since the Eccleshall goal were further hampered when Botchey was forced to be replaced by Steve Settle due to injury. Eccleshall continued to have the better of the play as West struggled to break down the visitors or sustain a pattern of play. In response Steve Eckersley sent on Ben Steer and Nic Evangelinos in place of Russell and Poizer. Almost immediately it had an effect as Lewis Schofield, playing left back, raced down the left cut inside and saw his daisy cutter of a right footed effort pushed away by the Eccleshall goalkeeper. The rebound was played back in but Matty Kay could only fire a difficult chance just wide of the post. West’s pressure continued and Brockley should have put West ahead on 69 minutes when he headed Steer’s throw over the bar from 6 yards out. Eccleshall responded with a chance of their own heading over a free kick from close range un-marked 60 seconds later. Steer, playing up front would threaten twice for West as first he was played into the box with a one-two by Settle but shot wide before volleying just wide again on the turn from the edge of the penalty area. On 82 minutes Eccleshall went close themselves first with the Eccleshall striker heading wide from inside the six yard box unmarked at the far post before the a strike from deep forced Lomax-Newton into a superb fingertip save to save a certain goal. West went immediately down the other end and should have scored when Evangelinos skinned his man only to see his shot palmed round the pos. Three minutes later a volley of his own was palmed away by the Eccleshall keeper Spencer Martin. With extra time looming the ball was bypassing midfield and it was Eccleshall who secured their place in the next round with a clinical counter attacking goal in the 92nd minute as West conceded possession in midfield, a quick pass played in Jepson one-on-one and he finished under the outrushing West goalkeeper.

SOCIAL MEDIA REACTION TO WEST’S RECORD BREAKING WIN When we entertained Dinnington Town in the FA Vase little did we know what was about to unfold. Not only did the club set a new record for a win in the FA Vase but also recorded the highest ever margin of victory for a NWCFL club and smashed our own club record score in the process. The media exposure since had been incredible with Steve Settle being interviewed twice, once on the BBC 5 Live Non League Show and again last Friday on BBC Radio Manchester. The Non League paper carried its own headline and feature and last Friday’s Manchester Evening News had a full page spread complete with a colour photo for the club scrapbook. It was a historic day for the club as they broke club, NWCFL and FA Vase records…

THE FA VASE The Football Association Challenge Vase, usually referred to as the FA Vase is an annual competition for teams playing below Step 4 of the English National League System with over 500 clubs entering the competition. This season there are two qualifying rounds preceding the six proper rounds, semi-finals (played over two legs) and final to be played at Wembley Stadium. Last season’s winners were North Shields who beat Glossop North End 2-1 after extra time in the Wembley final and West had earlier lost 1-2 to Glossop in the first round tie played here at The Recreation Ground. The history of the FA Vase goes back to 1974 when football players were either professionals or amateurs. Professionals were paid to play by their clubs, and the only cup competitions such clubs were allowed to enter were the FA CUP and after 1969, for clubs outside The Football League, the FA Trophy. Amateurs did not get paid [officially] by their clubs, and such clubs had their own cup competition, the FA Amateur Cup. In 1974, with many of the top amateur players receiving payment for playing, The FA abolished the distinction, scrapped the Amateur Cup and introduced the FA Vase for the majority of clubs who had previously played in the competition. Well over 200 clubs entered in the first season, 1974–75 and Hoddesdon Town of the Spartan League beat Epsom and Ewell of the Surrey Senior League 2-1 in the first Vase final at Wembley before a crowd of 9,000. In recent years, entry to the FA Vase has been restricted to clubs mainly at Step 5 and 6 of the National League System, although occasionally clubs at Step 7 have been admitted. This was the case when WEST first entered the competition in season 2011-12 and played away at another Step 7 club, Ashville, from the West Cheshire League.

Clubs from the Channel Islands [First Tower United, St. Martins and Vale Recreation] and the Isle of Man [Douglas HSOB] have also entered the Vase in the past. Guernsey FC who were formed in 2011 and played then in the Step 5 Combined Counties League entered the competition in 2012-13 season and reached the semi finals. League performance in the previous season also has an effect on exemptions in the early rounds of the competition: - Eligible teams who played in the FA Vase the previous season and finished in the top 4 of a Step 5 league are exempt from qualifying and start play in the First round Proper of the Vase, unless they were promoted to a Step 4 league, in which case they would now play in the FA Trophy instead. This applies to Glossop North End this season following their promotion. - Eligible teams who played in the FA Trophy the previous season and were relegated from a Step 4 league are exempt from qualifying and start play in the First round Proper of the Vase as well. - Clubs that played in the 4th round or later of the previous season's FA Vase are exempt from qualifying and the first round and begin play in the Second round Proper. The record attendance for an FA Vase match was set on Sunday 13 May 2007, when 36,232 spectators watched Truro City come from behind to beat AFC Totton 3–1 in the Wembley final. FA VASE WINNERS Only five teams have managed to win the FA Vase more than once. Whitley Bay from the Northern League are the first team to win the FA Vase three times in successive seasons and four times in total. Two FA Vase winners, Forest Green Rovers and Tamworth have gone on to play in the Football Conference at the top of the non-league pyramid.
No FA Vase winner has yet reached the Football League although 2008–09 and 201415 finalists Glossop North End had briefly competed in the old First Division over a hundred years earlier, and 1985 finalists Fleetwood Town were promoted to the Football League in 2012 after winning the Conference, though they were reformed in 1997. NORTH WEST WINNERS AND FINALISTS North West winners have been St Helens Town who beat Warrington Town 3-2 in 198687, Colne Dynamos who beat Emley 1-0 the following season and more recently Nantwich Town who won 3-1 against Hillingdon Borough in 2005-06 and Kirkham and Wesham [now AFC Fylde] who beat Lowestoft Town 2-1 in 2007-08. Indeed AFC Fylde brought that Vase winning team here to The Recreation Ground in July 2008 for a pre-season game to help us celebrate our centenary and it was the conversations after that game which encouraged WEST to apply to join the North West Counties League. Other NW finalists were Fleetwood Town who lost to Halesowen Town in 1984-85 and then Glossop North End have been to Wembley twice in recent years losing 0-2 to Whitley Bay in 2008-09 and then last season 1-2 after extra time to North Shields.
NORTHERN LEAGUE HONOURS Whickham were the first Northern League club to win the FA Vase in 1980-81, coming from 20 down to beat Willenhall Town 3-2. It was then 26 years before Whitby Town beat North Ferriby 3-0 in 1996-97 and the following season Tow Law Town lost 1-0 to Tiverton Town in the final. Whitley Bay secured the first of their 4 triumphs in 2001-02 beating Tiptree United 1-0 at Villa Park, after extra time and since 2008-09 the Northern League has been represented in every final for the past 7 seasons. That was when Whitley Bay won the Vase for the second time defeating Glossop in the final and they went on to retain the trophy for another two seasons beating Wroxham 6-1 in 2009-2010 and Coalville Town 3-2 in 201011. In 2011-12 the final was an all Northern League affair when Dunston UTS beat West Auckland Town 2-0 and then Spennymoor Town lifted the Vase the following year beating unpaid Tunbridge Wells 2-1. West Auckland Town suffered final heartbreak again in 201314 losing 1-0 to Sholing and then last season a resurgent North Shields edged past Glossop North End 2-1 after extra time. For today’s teams the magic of the Vase is alive and well and although Wembley seems a long way away, the winners today are into the last 64 and only another 6 Vase wins to get there!

Visiting Brookburn Road today Morpeth Town Football was established in the town of Morpeth in 1880 with Morpeth Harriers (1888-90) being the most prominent side. Morpeth Town have carried on their tradition of wearing the Amber & Black stripes ever since. Morpeth Harriers played on a field of the Dogger Bank and in 1886 they were joined holders of the Northumberland Senior Cup with Shankhouse after the final ended in a draw and the decision was made to share the trophy. 1890 saw the amalgamation of Morpeth United & Morpeth FC to form the new Harriers who went on to win the East Northumberland League that season. In 1894 the clubs name was changed to Morpeth Town. In 1903 the club were Northern Alliance League champions. In 1906 the club won the Northumberland FA Senior Benevolent Bowl. During this period the club played their home matches at the rear of the Stobhill Cricket field with their headquarters being the Phoenix hotel. In the 1930’s there is evidence that the club played at the Grange House Field, before moving to Storey Park, behind the Sun Inn in 1954. During the period 1920 to 1954 the club won further honours. In the 1930’s there were three consecutive Northumberland Aged Miners Cup successes. The 1980’s were a profitable time for the club. A runner’s up place in the Northern Alliance League was achieved. Morpeth were league champions in 1984 and runners up again in 1985. In 1986 the club celebrated a cup double winning both the Alliance Challenge Cup & the Northumberland FA Senior Benevolent Bowl. The Northumberland Aged Miners Cup was again won in 1988, but the next silver ware was not sighted until a Northern Alliance League & Cup double in 1994. That season the club move to a purpose built stadium at Morpeth Common. Aptly named Craik Park after father & son W & R Craik who both served as club secretary from 1920 -1985. The new ground was the brain child of club President and Morpeth Town stalwart Ken Beattie. Other names synonymous with the history of the club are JW Kidd who served as club Chairman for 15 years, his son Billy a club legend who played 22 consecutive seasons for the club without ever being booked or sent off,

and former secretary and treasurer Bill Holian who served the club with distinction. Promotion to the Northern League Division 2 was attained in 1994. Champions the following season Morpeth Town were promoted to Northern League Division 1. They were to finish creditable sixth in their first season and finish runners up to Bedlington Terriers in the Final of the Northumberland Senior Cup after defeating Blyth Spartans 6-2 in the semi final. In 2007 Morpeth Town won the Senior Cup for the second time when they defeated Blyth Spartans 3-2 at St James’ Park Newcastle. The Highway Men were relegated from Division 1 at the end of season 2009-10, and in the following year they finished bottom of Division 2. Season 2011-12 saw Nick Gray appointed manager and under his stewardship Morpeth finished in a very creditable 4th place just missing out on promotion. A return to the top flight of the Northern League was attained the following season, with victory at Brandon United on the final day of the season. Further progress was made the following year when The Highway Men reached the last 16 of the FA Carlsberg Vase. Season 2014-15 saw The Highway Men consolidate their position in the top half of The Northern League with an eight place finish. The season was rounded with an appearance in the final of The Techflow Group Northumberland Senior Cup at St James Park. After defeating Newcastle United Under 21’s 3-1 in the semi final Morpeth went down to a narrow 2-0 defeat to Blyth Spartans. Ex Blyth Spartans. Twenty year old Ben started his career with Newcastle United and went on to play Reserve team football for the Magpies before his release in 2012 where he joined Team Northumbria. Ground Safety In the interest of spectator comfort and safety, the following conditions apply at the clubs Brookburn Road ground and must be observed at all times.
In case of fire or other emergency that requires the clubhouse or ground to be evacuated instructions will be given over the public address system, and we ask that you comply with those instructions immediately. The chanting of racist or obscene chanting is strictly forbidden. Glasses, bottles, gas canisters, knives, darts, tools, flag poles or any other articles likely to cause injury are not permitted into the ground. Alcohol may be purchased and consumed in the bar area only. Children are not allowed in the Club House unless accompanied by an adult. Encroachment onto the playing area is forbidden at all times. Standing is not allowed in front of the seated areas. All forms of transport on the clubs car park is at the owners’ risk.
The club reserves the right to remove any person from the ground who is in breach of these rules or whose presence is a source of danger or annoyance to others.
