Editorial & Welcome to… Congleton Town We reach the half way mark in this season’s league campaign with our 21 st game today, after completing 10 games each home and away. The story of our first half of the season makes for interesting examination as we suffered a series of narrow defeats in the opening 10 games, lost all 4 home games and gathered a meager 7 points from 30. However, since mid September we’ve won 7 of the 10 games in the league adding another 21 points of a possible 30. The way the side has responded to the disappointment of successive cup defeats has been very encouraging and last Saturday was another good example of the composed way we’ve gone about things as we added another 3 points to keep the home fans happy. Squires Gate were no pushover, despite their lowly league position and but for two excellent saves from Hayden Buckley Smith it could have been a lot closer. Scoring early in each half certainly helped and the crowd certainly enjoyed some excellent football from both teams. Credit to our grounds men for the pitch preparation which enabled both teams to play a passing game on a surface which held up well despite the heavy rains during the week. Today we welcome Congleton Town and they are currently below us in the table largely due to being behind other teams with their league games because of good results in both the FA Cup and Vase. In the FA Cup they defeated Handsworth Parramore and Jarrow before going out 1-2 away at Northern League Whitley Bay. In the FA Vase they safely negotiated tricky opposition at Nostell MW and AFC Emley before losing at home to another northern League side, Marske United. Since then they have also had a recent change of management with Andy Alston and Griff Jones taking the reins and achieving an impressive 4-1 home win over Runcorn Town in their first game in charge. Congleton are one of the sleeping giant and best supported clubs in this division and the new management team will be all out to keep up the momentum by taking something from today’s game. We extend a warm welcome to everyone from Congleton and any other visitors to today’s game. Enjoy the warmth of the clubhouse and our hot refreshments, and the game and have a safe journey home afterwards.

UPCOMING FIXTURES Next Saturday, 5th December, we’re off to Silsden for our longest away trip of the season. We are running a coach to the game and have space for travelling supporters if you fancy a day out to avoid Christmas shopping. We leave from outside The Bowling Green at 11.45am and will return around 7.15pm. If you would like to travel please speak to Rob McKay or Rob Turley today and we’ll reserve you a place. The next 1st team home game here is on Sat 19th December when we host Ashton Athletic, so why not come down again then and bring a friend.

PS: DON’T FORGET After the match today we have an open meeting for supporters to explain our plans for future development, please note the full page advert later in the programme. This will be in the clubhouse from 5.30pm. In the meantime thank you for your support this afternoon and ENJOY THE GAME.

Steve Settle’s Notes Good afternoon and welcome to today’s game against Congleton Town. I'd like to begin by welcoming the players, officials and supporters of Congleton Town. Last weekend we faced a very motivated Squires Gate side who arrived here off the back of three wins since our 4-0 win on the coast last month. What we faced was a much sterner test in difficult conditions but we took our chances, scored at key times and kept our fourth clean sheet in five games. We created a host of chances and could have won by a greater margin but Hayden Buckley-Smith also made two excellent saves himself. Ash Woods scored his 12th and 13th goals of the season and put in another impressive performance. He's now one off the single season record for West at this level which is currently held by Rick Gleave two years ago (and he's eyeing the leading goalscorer mantle himself). Ash’s form has been excellent and the fact that he can match that today is a testament to how hard he’s worked and the exciting football the lads are playing. Also impressing last weekend was Joe Shaw who has recently arrived from Glossop North End. He made his debut at Cammell Laird two weeks ago and was very good and he excelled again on his home debut and added a goal to cap it off. We are delighted to have captured the calibre of Joe and it’s a real coup for the club. Whilst we’ve scored 60 goals and on course to surpass the 76 we scored last season by a wide margin I’ve also been really impressed by the recent defensive displays. We’ve now kept four clean sheets in our last five league games and we’ve only conceded one in that time. This can be attributed to two players who’ve had to fight for their places in the team in Matt Eckersley and Callum Jones. Matt was roped into the role of emergency centre back on the opening day of the season and has made that place his own and he’s looking good to fulfil the club secretary’s prediction of player of the season.

In what has been a season to rue injuries in the full back position as it looks like we’ve lost Michael Simcock, Scott Jones and Richmond Botchey for the majority if not entire season due to knee injuries. Myself and Steve Brockley have filled in there until injuries forced us out and even Yahya Saeed was forced off through injury on his debut against Cammell Laird. Fortunately, Callum Jones has been an almost ever present throughout the season and has proved people that he can still compete at this level which is even more impressive for a player whose been with us since the Manchester League days and has shown how the entire squad is fighting to get into the team and prove themselves. Today will mark the half way point of the season and I’ve been really impressed with the lads improvement and recent form however we cannot get complacent and think we've achieved anything. There are no easy games at this level and certainly no teams looking to hand us an easy time. We need to be at our best to give us the chance to finish as high in the league as possible. Finally I would like to thank all the supporters who made it down to last weeks game, with the forecast predicted and United and City occupying the early and late TV game it would have been easy to skip the game but once again it was terrific to see so many faces along the sidelines. Your support is invaluable to the success of this club and it gives us a huge lift.

Enjoy the game!

West 3 Squires Gate 0 …match report West recorded back-to-back wins & back-to-back clean sheets for the second time this season as they recorded a first league double over Squires Gate. The visitors arrived at Brookburn Road on the back of three consecutive wins, albeit having not played for three weeks due to postponements, but West manager Steve Settle was able to name a strong team with only one enforced change as Ben Steer came in for the suspended Anthony Potts with Captain Mark Rogers dropping into the heart of defence. Despite the weeks wet weather the game kicked off in sunshine and West took an immediate lead as Ben Steer found himself on the right handside, played his pass to Joe Shaw at the edge of the penalty area who clipped his shot inside the far bottom left hand corner.

West almost immediately had a chance to make it 3-0 as Woods, Evangelinos and Steer exchanged kick ups inside the penalty area before Steer went for the spectacular overhead kick. However the Squires Gate defender paid for his bravery, putting his head in the way and the referee gave a free kick for foot up and after a few moments the defender was fortunately able to continue. Billy McKenna had Squires Gate’s best chance of the opening minutes of the second half as his shot was curled onto the roof of the net from 20 yards out on 53 minutes. Almost immediately, Squires Gate had a let off of their own as their goalkeeper dropped a Ben Steer throw in with the rebound blocked away for a corner. On 57 minutes Shaw almost added a second when he headed over after a free kick was wickedly curled into the far post.

It was the perfect start for West who should have doubled their lead on nine minutes when Squires Gate goalkeeper Ben Fletcher parried a close range effort from a West set piece, the rebound fell to Matt Eckersley but his shot was deflected wide for a corner. Two minutes later West went close again as Nic Evangelinos released Ash Woods with a lovely through pass but Fletcher blocked it at the near post.

Squires Gate’s best chance of the game came on 63 minutes when the ball was pulled back from the touchline and Buckley-Smith came up with a great save from Penswick’s shot. The game became end to end and Callum Jones almost added his third goal of the season as he charged onto a great flick on by Matty Kay, he burst into the box but could only shoot tamely at the goalkeeper.

Despite the bright start it wasn’t completely one sided as Squires Gate pulled themselves into the game and had their first effort on 17 minutes when Hayden Buckley-Smith was forced to tip a strong Danny Penswick shot round the foot of the post. On 29 minutes the West goalkeeper was called into action again as a Squire Gate free kick was curled into the box and headed straight into his hands.

It was a big miss from the full back but it was eclipsed two minutes later when Woods pulled a low cross back from the touchline to Steer at the far post, however with an open goal, the ball took a bobble and rolled under his foot. On 72 minutes the same thing happened but this time Steer turned provider for Woods but the West striker this time fired over the bar. Fortunately it wouldn’t come back to haunt them and Woods finally added his second on 85 minutes as he reached a long ball from the West defence, brought it down, turned and fired a rocket of a shot into the bottom left hand corner to secure the points.

Combined with the opposition determination to draw level and the heavy conditions the closing stages of the first half was quite even and produced few clear cut chances but Lee Gavin arguably had the best chance as Woods went on a terrific run beating several players before the ball ricocheted to Gavin whose 25 yarder just crept wide of the right top hand corner. If West were worrying about missed chances in the first half coming back to haunt them their minds were eased on 48 minutes when some lovely passing football through the middle reached Evangelinos on the left, he cut inside, raced to the touchline and pulled his cross back low to Woods who couldn’t miss sliding in from 2 yards to give West their second goal.

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

The game ended in bizarre circumstance however as with a minute remaining a runaway dog raced into the ground and eventually onto the playing surface. The ball was its target as play was stopped as the dog chased the ball around the field. Despite efforts to detain the dog with Head Coach Stephen Brockley taking a tumble in the process, the dog was eventually coaxed from the pitch by throwing the ball off of it. However despite play resuming soon after the dog returned and, into stoppage time, the referee wisely decided to blow for full time. Fortunately for the dog, the owner, who’d run away from the nearby Jackson’s Boat on the other side of the Mersey river, eventually showed up to reclaim her.

West v Squires Gate … match action

WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

Visitor‌ report Those attending last week's game against Squire's Gate will be aware of the bizarre circumstances which surrounded the end of the game. With West 3-0 up and heading towards the final minutes, a small dog burst onto the pitch from nowhere and began to chase after the ball. Players and club officials teamed up to try to rid the pitch of the pesky pooch but with no owner in sight and with the dog providing a great box to box display the referee wisely decided to blow for full time. Although this incident was somewhat humorous, it must be noted that it could have ended badly as if the dog had entered the pitch ten minutes earlier, the game may well have been called off and ordered to be replayed. Whilst dogs are very welcome at Brookburn Road, we must ask that they are kept firmly on a lead and away from the action on the pitch. But West faithful need not fear! Our intrepid stewarding team have been equipped with a leash and a supply of dog biscuits so that in the event of a repeat of this incident, any invading hound can be lured away.

Looking back our feature on Football History No 15 We all know about the exploits of the giants that are Manchester United and Manchester City. Across the country, and even the world, iconic places and people like Old Trafford, Maine Road, Bert Trautman and George Best are regularly spoken of with fondness and reverence. But Manchester has seen a great many more interesting pieces of footballing history. Here, we explore some of the lesser known aspects of Manchester's rich tapestry of football history.

Andy March Born in Prestwich in 1960, Andy Marsh grew up dreaming of becoming a professional footballer, his main goal being to represent his beloved Manchester City. Instead, he ended up turning out for his local side Prestwich Heys, where he was noted as being a powerful, hardworking winger.

match, a friendly against another newly formed team, Ambassadors F.C. The Distributors team consisted of the local company employees, plus Marsh as player manager, whilst the Ambassadors team consisted of a squad of local dignitaries, their star man being a Chilean consulate general.

But in 1981, only 2 years after Marsh had begun turning out for Heys, his career seemed to be coming to an end as he emigrated to Guam, a tiny island in the pacific which at the time had no football league.

Soon enough, a Guam football league was in regular play and of course the first winners were the legendary Quality Distributors. However, they fell into obscurity over the next few seasons, as Marsh's men struggled to compete with the young and enthusiastic players from Ambassadors, Crushers and Saturn Z, who won most of the domestic silverware in following years.

Marsh worked as an engineer in Guam for over a year without kicking a ball, though he did later admit he missed the game. "There I was in this tropical island paradise," he told the Guam Truth, "and all I could think about was how much I missed playing for Prestwich Heys." But everything changed in 1983 when Marsh was working on a contract for local shipping company quality distributors. "It came to me in a flash," he explained. "I saw the company name and I remembered people would describe Prestwich Heys as quality distributors. It seemed like destiny. I walked into the manager's office, pitched the idea of a works team to him and walked out 5 minutes later as chairman of Quality Distributors F.C." The Quality Distributors company provided a field for games to be played on, and soon enough Distributors F.C were playing their first

In 1988, the Distributors once again became Guianese football pioneers as they became the first team from the tiny nation to play an international match, taking on Bermudan side Flanaghan's Onions F.C in a friendly match. The score was 3-3 (with Marsh netting a brace) though it is hard to say which team had a more comical name. But it was in 2008 when Guam's first ever team secured their finest achievement. Still managed by Marsh, who by this point had still not retired from playing, the Distributors managed a 100% playing record, winning every single game they played, one of the few clubs to perform such a feat. Not a bad record for the team founded on a whim by the boy from Prestwich.

History of Congleton Town Events which led to the formation of Congleton Town Football Club, began in the 1890’s, the St James’ North Street School amalgamated with another local club, the Messrs Pointons Joiners Shop. They played on West Heath before housing was built in that area, and then became Congleton Hornets Football Club. The Hornets played at the Willow Street ground famed in Congleton, and competed in the South Cheshire League and recorded its’ record league win, 10-0 against Audley in the 1897/98 season. Congleton Town Football Club succeeded the Hornets in 1901, playing in the Crewe and District League for four years, the first three of which saw the club lift the League Championship. The Club then moved into the North Staffordshire League in 1905, and won the League Championship in the 1919/20 season. The following year they joined the Cheshire County League, regarded at the time as the best League outside the Football League. The following season they finished runners-up and won the coveted Cheshire Senior Cup in their first appearance in the Final. The Club then suffered a barren spell until the Senior Cup was won again in 1938. Success after the War did not descend on Booth Street until the 1971/72 season when the Club, now playing in the Mid-Cheshire League, won the League Cup after being runners-up in the League both that season and in the previous season. Three Mid-Cheshire League Championships then came to Booth Street in the 1973/74, 1975/76 and 1977/78 seasons, together with the League Cup and the Cheshire Saturday Cup. Although this was the most successful period of the Club’s history as regards silverware, the truly successful period began in the 1981/82 campaign, when the Second Division of the Cheshire County League was gained on the last game of the season, and Town were narrowly beaten to the Cup by Macclesfield Town. That was the last season of the Cheshire County League before the North West Counties League came into existence. As founder members of this new League, Congleton finished the first three campaigns in mid-table and then were narrowly beaten to the Championship by Clitheroe on goal difference in the 1985/86 season. The Club then had its, application to join the Northern Premier League rejected, but joined the higher league when the

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

First Division of the NFL was formed in 1987. The highlight of the 1989/90 season was to reach the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Although beaten 2-0 by Crewe Alexandra, that achievement re-kindled local interest in the Club upon which its management hoped to build. The Final of the NPL’s First Division Cup was also reached in this season, but the “Bears” were beaten 5-1 on aggregate by Harrogate Town. The “Bears” enjoyed exciting times in the First Division, initially finishing in mid-table but then, playing to avoid relegation as the seasons come to a close. Between 1993 and 1997 a new Board of Directors brought financial and managerial stability to the Club, whilst the present Directors aim to continue this work and improve the Club’s fortunes in the years ahead. The club had a good season in 1999/2000 but fell away badly the following year. Despite reaching a best ever 4th Round of the FA Trophy before defeat by Worksop Town, they struggled badly in the league. The club appointed Sean Connor as manger in February 2001 but he could not prevent them finishing bottom of the UniBond League and relegation became a reality. The early season of 2001/02 saw the club take just 9 points from 17 league matches and early exit from FA Cup and FA Vase. Sean Connor was replaced as manager by Kevin Langley, ex Everton and Man City. The club made a fine revival and had reached virtual safety before Langley’s shock move to Kidsgrove Athletic. Bryan Griffiths took over as manager and gained the points to make safety a certainty and stake a strong claim to keep the manager’s job. He was formally appointed at the end of the season. Gary Bickerstaffe joined him as assistant and in September 2002 he invited Kevin Langley to return as a player and to help with coaching. When Griffiths left to join Rossendale Utd, Kevin Langley was re-appointed as manager and Mark Cox joined to complete an experienced management team. Off the field the club continued to enjoy growing support from sponsors and steady improvements in its facilities, culminating with the signing of a two-year deal with Macclesfield based SSG Group of Companies during the summer of 2003. During the summer of 2002, the clubhouse underwent major refurbishment and is seen by the club as a major step towards increasing its revenue potential. The changing facilities were redesigned and upgraded. The team reached the fifth Round of the FA Vase, beat three higher league sides in reaching the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, the semi-finals of the Cheshire

Congleton Town History continued Senior Cup and the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup. In all cup competitions other than the FA Cup, only the eventual finalists beat the Bears. With promotion missed, a number of players left the club in the summer of 2004 leaving Kevin Langley with the task of rebuilding the side for the 2004/05 campaign. After a poor start and early exits from all major cup competitions, Karl Wilcox replaced Kevin Langley after he resigned in November 2005. In a further twist in an already difficult season, Karl Wilcox resigned after 11 defeats in 12 games. Paul Moore was appointed for the remainder of the season and he guided the team to safety before confirmation of his appointment signalled the start of rebuilding of a side aiming to challenge for honours. 2005/06 started brightly with SSG adding a third year to its already valuable sponsorship, but swift exits from cup competitions were a disappointment. After many changes in personnel, the team settled to end the season with a creditable run in that held promise for 2006/07. The start of a football academy for 6-15 year olds and the introduction of a reserve side were positive steps to help build the teams of the future. 2006/07 saw new sponsors STD Limited, part of the Pallex network, entering a 2-year deal which they then extended a further year. The supporters trust provided kit for the reserve team. After a steady start to the 2006/07 campaign, Paul Moore left to manage Leek Town and Andy Lee took over the managerial reins as the club strived to maintain continuity. The Bears lifted their first piece of silverware for some time when they won the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup after defeating Witton Albion 3-0 at Wincham Park. At the end of the season Andy Lee stepped down as he announced a proposed move to Blackpool and Anthony Buckle and Darren Twigg were appointed with the task of rekindling the on-field performances. Off the field new floodlights were installed and the stand behind the bottom goal was re-roofed. After a reasonable season, despite a poor final run in, both Anthony and Darren stayed with the club and continued to build a side with promotion the target within the next couple of years. That plan was maintained in 2008/09 as the Bears ended a creditable 4th, just 1 point away from a 3rd place finish. A final run in of just 1 league defeat in the last 20 matches encouraged everyone. With two new key local businessmen, Nick Shatwell and Martin Lenton teaming up to add impetus to the club’s ambition, significant development of the clubs facilities were started. A redesigned entrance, turnstiles and car park were the first step. Refurbishment of the club house

followed and tarmac has been laid in the car park. For the start of 20010/11 the club now has a hospitality suite for sponsors and a new boardroom. With Ant and Twiggy remaining at the helm, they have been busy strengthening the squad. However, after an indifferent season in 2010/11 the pair tendered their resignation. 2011/12 saw the club jointly managed by Joe Paladino and Adriano Rigoglioso. Assisted by Joe Gibiliru, the playing side were completely reformed but indifferent results led to Dean Sibson placed in temporary charge in early November before Jim Vince was appointed in February 2012. His was tasked with rebuilding the side ready for a real push for promotion in 2012/13. He was initially assisted by Neil Gill and Steve Hardy before Neil left the club mid season. With the addition of Gateley Solicitors and PKF Accountants forming new partnerships with the club, the erection of a new spectator covered standing area and strengthening off field organisation, the club starts the new season with a new found enthusiasm and optimism for 2012/13. That was not borne out completely, so strengthening was needed for 2013/14. Having been awarded grade E for their ground in March 2013, ready for the next tier in the pyramid, strengthening of the playing squad was a priority and over the close season some additional players were brought in to complement the majority that were staying. Both Jim and Steve Hardy, now with Andy Alston on the coaching staff, look to improve on last year’s achievements with promotion still the obvious goal. With the opportunity to continue strengthening the squad for 2014/15, Jim has signed players that will improve the overall quality of the squad and once again push for that elusive promotion place for a return to Northern Premier League football. That wish just failed to materialise and the club once more looked to change direction with the replacement of Jim Vince. Steve Hardy and Mike McDonald have taken over the running of team affairs with Andy Alston and team captain Andrew Langford able to add their experience to the redeveloping of the side. With a number of players departing in the summer, Mike and Steve have started the rebuilding which may take a few matches to get 2015/16 in full swing. After a string of disappointing performances and results, the club board moved to appoint Andy Alston and Griff Jones as joint managers. Although neither have a track record of management, the club felt they had the right credentials to bring the best out of the squad.
