Editorial & Welcome to… Silsden FC This afternoon we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Silsden FC, ‘The Cobbydalers’, to The Recreation Ground for the first encounter between our two clubs this season. The past week has also been a chance to take a deep breath after last weekend and one of the most impressive results in our short history in this division. The game at AFC Liverpool, played at Marine FC, saw an exceptional performance from our squad resulting in a tremendous 6-2 away win, lifting us onto 40 points for the season so far. It is testimony to the hard work of our management team and demonstrates just how far we’ve improved since the end of last August when we had only 4 points to show from our first 7 league games and were languishing at the wrong end of the league. The necessary changes to our squad and intensive hard work since are bearing fruit and the combination of experience and youth in our squad bodes well for the future. However, with 15 games and another 45 points to play for this is not the time to rest on our laurels, but rather to press on and try and finish as high as possible and give our growing band of regular supporters something to continue to cheer about! Sometimes we forget that this is only our third season in the Premier Division, and our fourth in the NWCFL, whereas today’s visitors have been established there for over a decade, Their best finish was 9th place in 2008-09 with a total of 58 points, but this season they have been finding it tough and are now facing a hard challenge to get away from the wrong end of the table. This is the third season of competition between us, with Silsden slightly ahead on results so far. In 2014-15 WEST won the first game here 2-0 in early March and then Silsden won the reverse fixture 2-0 on the final day of the season. Last season we played each other twice in the space of 10 days with a 1-1 draw here before a much weakened West side travelled to Silsden midweek, losing 6-1. Silsden will certainly be up for it today following the resignation of previous manager Ryan Haigh last weekend and the swift appointment of former player James Gill as their new manager. Gill has been assisting at Barnoldswick Town for the last 3 seasons but is now looking forward to the new challenge at Silsden. Silsden Press Officer, Jim Rosser, said: ‘ Gilly was one of the players who brought the Cobbydalers up from the lower leagues to their present position and the Committee hopes he can have the same impact as manager’. FIXTURE BACK-LOG In the last programme we noted the huge number of 14 postponements suffered by Colne since November, whereas we are one of a few clubs who have played more than most. The topic was also the subject of a recent blog by League Chairman Paul Lawler on 29 th January, which we’ve reproduced in full later in the programme. COMMENT As a club we are very grateful for the efforts made by the League Management Committee and Fixture Secretary, John Reid, in particular in rearranging postponed games and fully support the efforts made so that we can keep playing. John has an unenviable task and has done a great job in sorting our remaining fixtures which is really helpful as we plan resourcing our home games in particular. We are also continuing to maintain the ground even through bad weather so that we maximise the chances of completing our remaining home games as scheduled and manage our cash flow as best we can. AND FINALLY … We welcome all our visitors from Silsden and elsewhere to The Recreation Ground today – Enjoy the game and have a safe journey home.

Steve Settle’s Notes Good afternoon and welcome to Brookburn Road for this afternoon’s fixture against Silsden. It’s a pleasure to be able to welcome James Gill and his staff, players, officials, and fans for what will be his first game in charge of Silsden. I’d like to congratulate James on his appointment and, after today’s game and excluding our return fixture in April of course, wish him the best of luck for the remainder of the season. Although Silsden have struggled so far this season a new manager always gives a team fresh impetus (often new players!) and I’m sure they will be desperate to get a win for their new boss today. We will have to make sure the lads are well prepared for the game as we look to achieve a top 6 place. Since our last home game against title favourites Colne we put in arguably our best performance of, not only this season but, our time spent in the North West Counties league. It was all the more pleasing for us as a management team as we had been stressing to the lads that they needed to start showing how good they were against some of the teams in the top half of the league. This season we have done well against some the teams at the bottom end of the table but against the Ashton’s and Runcorn’s and Atherton Colls of the world we have under achieved. To go to Liverpool with them 1 point behind us with a game in hand and come away with a 6-2 win was exceptional and full credit to them. Barring a 15 minute spell just prior to half time and during the early instances of the 2nd half we dominated them.

Conceding 2 goals at crucial times from set pieces was obviously disappointing but the boys showed what quality they have to score 4 goals in the 2nd half, have 2 dubious ones ruled out and hit the post twice really characterised how dominant we were! It would be a challenge to single anyone out but I thought Nic Evangelinos showed real quality. Every time he was direct we looked like cutting them to shreds and he deserved his 3 goals. I was also particularly pleased for Ben Steer and Johnny Pozier coming off the bench and contributing. Both lads are a credit to themselves and if they continue to work hard in training their chances will come. Looking forward to the remaining 15 games our target remains 70 points. This means we will have to pick up an average of 2 points per game. There are some tough fixtures in there away at Colls, both Runcorn’s and Colne but this gives us an opportunity to remedy my earlier point about taking points off the top teams. Hopefully the first 3 of those 30 points will come today! Thanks for the support and enjoy the game!

West 1 Colne 3 …match report On a wet cold and windy day in South Manchester, a healthy crowd of 146 braved the weather and were treated to an entertaining game between West and high flying Colne. West were without Matt Eckersley after he suffered an Achilles injury in the previous weeks win against AFC Darwen but were boosted by Gary Lilley making his first start of the season in his place. West were still able to call upon Ben Richardson and Joe Shaw. It was a bright but windy day when both sides arrived at Brookburn Road but a torrential downpour 10 minutes before kickoff rendered the pitch sodden, much to the concern of the referee, and making the conditions all the much tougher for both sets of players. Despite the weather both sides were determined to play football but the pitch conditions meant very few chances of note for either side in the opening 10 minutes. West’s first chance came on 11 minutes as a West free kick fell to Nic Evangelinos at the edge of the penalty area and he volleyed wide. West arguably shaded the opening stages but Colne took the lead on 15 minutes with a brilliant goal as a pass was curled into the box just evading the head of Mark Rogers, league top goalscorer Danny Boyle neatly controlled it without the outside of his boot and calmly finished under the advancing Hayden Buckley-Smith to send the vocal travelling support into raptures. West responded well and on 20 minutes had a chance to level when an Evangelinos goalbound shot was blocked, however the ball loop up it fell into the path of Matty Kay inside the six yard box who tried to control and place it past the goalkeeper but could only find the side netting. On the half hour mark Ash Woods broke the offside trap but his shot was superbly blocked across goal by the boot of a Colne defender. Colne continued to show their attacking threat when Jay Hart curled over arguably the best chance of the half from the edge of the area.

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

The half time whistle came after an even yet entertaining game in which both sets of players looked as if they’d be drowned in mud. It was Colne who started the brighter in the second half, as the lead allowed them to hit West on the counter and they created the halves first chance when Lee Pugh cannoned a free kick off the foot of the post from 25 yards out. West continued to chase the game and they pushed for a second but were hit on the counter just after the hour mark when West conceded possession in the middle of the park, a passage of pinball ensued but a pass through the middle released Jay Hart and he raced through oneon-one to again finish under Buckley-Smith who was helpless in the West goal. West didn’t give up and almost pulled a goal back three minutes later when Callum Jones cross fell to Joe Shaw at the far post but was denied a goal by another block. West continued the pressure and halved the deficit on 69 minutes when a Benjamin Richardson cross from the left found the head of Woods at the near post and he powered his header home for his sixteenth goal of the season. Despite Colne having only played once in the last seven weeks they showed no signs of fatigue and almost immediately restored their two goal advantage as another low free kick was cannoned off the outside of the post. The last 20 minutes saw West pushing for a second whilst Colne looked to hit them on the counter in search of a third. Kay went closest when he volleyed over from substitute Ben Steer’s throw in but the points were wrapped up with the last kick of the game as Kenneth Taylor ran through from the half way line and slotted it under the goalkeeper to give Colne a hard fought three points. Both sets of players deserve credit for their attempts to play football in conditions anything but suited to it.

West v Colne… match action

WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

AFC Liverpool 2 West 6…match report West registered their biggest ever away win in the NWCFL with a stunning 6-2 win at AFC Liverpool which lifted them to seventh in the league. Steve Settle made just one change from the side that lost at home to Colne the previous Saturday with Scott Mason coming in for Gary Lilley who dropped to the bench whilst Paul Hughes made the bench following his recent return from Atherton Collieries. The only set back was Matt Eckersley failing a late fitness test due to an Achilles injury.

player could apply a final touch. A minute later another cross was whipped into the area; Matty Kay’s powerful header struck a Liverpool hand amid huge shouts for a penalty with the referee waving away the protests. Bizarrely West almost went ahead as the ball squirmed through the goalkeepers legs and almost rolled into the net as the goalkeeper scrambled to recover. Lee Gavin then had a 35 yard effort tipped round the post as West sought to end the contest before half time.

West started brightly pressing Liverpool deep inside their own half and pinned the hosts at the edge of their own penalty area. West took a 6th minute lead when a cross into the six yard box from Nic Evangelinos was headed clear by the Liverpool back line but only as far as Joe Shaw at the edge of the penalty area whose shot rolled into the bottom left hand corner.

However, Liverpool pulled a goal back against the run of play on 41 minutes when they curled a free kick to the far post, the header was knocked back across goal and Francis Barry tapped it home from close range. West should have gone into half time with their two goal advantage restored as a corner was whipped into the far post, Neild seemed to spill under the challenge of Ash Woods who tapped it in from a narrow angle despite colliding with the goalpost however the referee awarded a free kick to Liverpool.

Liverpool almost responded from a corner four minutes later when they headed over at the far post un-marked. Liverpool then forced Hayden Buckley-Smith into his first save as Ryan Cox twisted and turned but his shot was comfortably saved by the West goalkeeper. West continued to create chances and almost added a second on 16 minutes when Evangelinos fired over from six yards out after some great one touch passing through the penalty area. Two minutes later a West corner evaded the evaded everyone with Joe Shaw ready to pounce at the far post. The loose ball was crossed back into the box with the header glanced just wide of the post by Matty Kay. West continued their pressure as Ash Woods first had a shot palmed away by the Liverpool goalkeeper before heading wide after a superb cross whipped in by Mason. West’s pressure finally paid off as they doubled their lead on 23 minutes when Liverpool surrendered possession at the edge of the area, Shaw and Woods played a one-two inside the penalty area and his low cross found Benjamin Richardson at the far post who drilled it home from a yard out. West continued to press and a third almost came on 33 minutes when a free kick was chipped over the wall but the Liverpool goalkeeper Ryan Neild could only parry the shot but it was cleared away before any West

The second half began as the first half ended with both sides looking to add to their tally as Liverpool lifted themselves after the break. However it was West who created the first chances on 50 minutes as a low cross was powered across the goal-line from the right hand side but Matty Kay, despite getting to the ball could only force a difficult chance over the bar. A minute later a Matty Kay free kick was turned away by the boot of the Liverpool goalkeeper. On 52 minutes West had a second goal disallowed when a pass through the defence released Woods one-on-one. The West striker finished confidently but the flag was up for offside. On 56 minutes it was AFC Liverpool who levelled however as Allan Weston headed home un-marked at the far post from a corner. The goal lifted Liverpool who had their best spell of the game as they began to step up the tempo and had several chances to take the lead. First Ryan Cox broke the offside trap one-on-one but fire wide with the goal at his mercy. That was followed by two decent chances from set pieces with Buckley-Smith saving well at his near post on both occasions. Liverpool had clearly responded to their managers instructions and were on top.

Match report continued The game had a great end to end flow to it and West almost retook the lead just after the hour mark as Richardson played in Evangelinos on the right who beat his marker crossed the ball low into the path of Gavin but his shot was well saved at the near post. It was West who retook the lead on 66 minutes when Woods brilliantly headed on a long ball to Lee Gavin who broke through one-on-one. He was brought down at the edge of the area but before the referee was forced to determine whether or not it was a foul, Evangelinos reacted quickest and fired past the on rushing goalkeeper into the bottom right hand corner. It was the turning point in the match for West who had but under pressure in the second half until that point. West almost doubled their lead on 72 minutes as they hit Liverpool on the break; sub Ben Steer played in second West sub Gary Lilley with a great pass but his shot hit the outside of the post. Three minutes later it was 4-2 as Evangelinos added his second when Woods broke the offside trap after an excellent pass from Lilley; Woods shot was saved but

Evangelinos again reacted quickest and buried the rebound into the bottom corner. Liverpool didn’t give up and continued to press with Hayden again called into action to tip a long range effort over the bar. West looked to take full advantage of Liverpool’s search for a third goal and added a fifth on 83 minutes when Evangelinos received the ball on the left hand side, drew out the Liverpool centre back, cut passed him to the by-line and pulled back his cross to Ben Steer who roofed his finish for his 5th goal of the season. West added a sixth in the 89th minute when final West sub brought down a pass, his superb first touch allowed him to fire off a shot from range which the Liverpool goalkeeper could only parry and Evangelinos, despite being six yards away beat the goalkeeper to the rebound and slotted in to complete his hattrick. It was Evangelinos 12th goal of the season, his second hat-trick and the first by a West player in the league at Step 5. The goal also rounded off West’s biggest away since joining the NWCFL.

2015 Review Part Three October to December

October October began in the same manner as September had with the FA Vase with West welcoming Central Midlands League North side Dinnington Town to Brookburn Road. Whilst Dinnington Town had arrived winless and second bottom in the league few would have expected what to happen next as West rattled in 15 goals to set a new FA Vase record. Ash Woods gave West the lead on 7 minutes before Dinnington equalised through a smart goal on 18 minutes. Matty Kay restored their 2-1 lead on 26 minutes. Four minutes later Nic Evangelinos added his first goal of the season on returning to the club before a Lewis Schofield corner was deflected in by the keeper, Woods and Evangelinos added their second before Steve Settle got in on the act to give West an 8-1 half time lead. In the second half an own goal made it nine on the hour mark before goals from Ben Steer, a brace from Jonny Poizer, Jamie Wolden, Nic Evangelinos’ third and Anthony Potts wrapped up an emphatic 15-1 scoreline which saw West earn national headlines.

There was no rest for West as October contained no fewer than eight games and West’s good form continued with a stunning 51 win away to local rivals Abbey Hey. Once again West fell behind but equalised through a brilliant in individual Ash Woods goal who then added his second to make it 2-1. Anthony Potts made it 3-1 with his third goal in as many games before Evangelinos added his fifth in three games and Ben Steer made it 5-1 with a stunning finish in what was arguably West’s finest away performance since joining the NWCFL. West’s winning run ended at three as they followed that up with a 3-2 loss at home to Cammell Laird. West had continued their run of coming from behind to lead through goals from Ash Woods and Matty Kay but despite playing against 10 men for more than an hour Lairds levelled through a late penalty before scoring a last minute winner to secure the points. Despite the setback West responded and registered their first ever win away to Squires Gate as they won 4-0 and kept their first clean sheet of the season. Ben Steer gave West the lead heading home an Ash Woods cross before making it 2-0 with a wonderful chip from the wing. Evangelinos made it 3-0 in the second half before Mark Rogers scored his first of the season with a well taken goal in stoppage time.

Just as importantly West followed that up with three points in the league with a dramatic 4-3 win against Alsager Town with Kay, Woods and Evangelinos putting West into a 3-1 lead however it took a last minute Pottsy winner from a corner to secure three points.

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

The month ended with cup disappointment as West lost at home in the MEN United Cup to Division One side Eccleshall where despite taking the lead through Rick Gleave lost to a stoppage time winner. The following Saturday they found themselves 4-0 down after 20 minutes to Northern League Leaders Morpeth Town in the FA Vase. However in the second half and three goals in 9 minutes from Matty Kay (2) and Ash Woods pulled them back into the game. A Rick Gleave wonder goal in stoppage time looked to have forced extra time but Morpeth headed home with virtually the last seconds of the game to secure passage to round two.

The reserves ended the month with a key 2-1 win at Litherland REMYCA thanks to goals from Tommy Walsh and Joel Igenoza. The Youth Team had vital cups over Hyde in the Niel Thomason Cup 2-1 and Winstanley Warriors in the Lancashire Trophy 5-0. Off the field Jeff Smith MP opens our new grass pitches as home for our junior teams.

3-0 to secure back-to-back clean sheets for the first time since December 2014. An Ash Woods brace and a first goal for Joe Shaw secured a first ever double over the Seaside team. West finished November with three consecutive wins as they played out a thriller at Brookburn Road registering a 4-3 win against Congleton Town. Nic Evangelinos gave West a first half lead before Congleton levelled early in the second half. However Matty Kay made it 2-1 whilst an own goal made it 3-2 before Congleton levelled again to make it 3-3 before Ash Woods scored his 14th goal of the season to win the game. The Reserves only game in November saw them complete a league double over Unicorn Athletic 5-1 with goals from Tre Baldwin-Wills, Joel Igenoza and a Tommy Walsh brace. The Youth team defeated Prescot Cables 4-1 and defeated AFC Blackpool on penalties after a 44 draw.

December November

For what December lacked in the number of games in the weather impacted month it certainly made up in the size of them.

Compared to October November was a relatively straight forward and quiet month for West as they began with a 1-0 loss away to 1874 Northwich; their fifth straight loss against the fan owned team. This was followed with the exit in the Lancashire Trophy against Atherton Collieries at home. However West responded with arguably their most important result of the season as they braved the weather and defeated Cammell Laird 1-0 in Birkenhead thanks a Matty Kay penalty in a bad tempered game which saw six Cammell Laird players booked and their goalkeeper sent off late on (West by comparison had one booked for handball). West ended the game with 10 men for the third time this season against 1874 as debutant Kelvin Lugsden was sent off late on.

Brilliant Family Bonfire Event with over 500 people attending. This was followed up with a

December saw the second annual “Krombacher Ultras AGM as the club offered a FREE drink to every supporter. A bumper crowd enjoyed the half time entertainment of the Northern Quarter Boys Choir and the postmatch music from the Dutch Uncles but sadly West were well beaten 0-3. West ended 2015 with arguably the biggest game of the season in the eyes of the supporters as they travelled across town to Brantingham Road to face Maine Road. West had collected just one points from their previous four meetings against Road but made history as they dominated the game to secure a 1-0 win thanks to a Matty Kay volley on 18 minutes. In addition it was witnessed by a record crowd for the fixture of 360. WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

History of SILSDEN FC Silsden AFC was formed in September 1904 and has seen many teams come and go playing Saturdays and Sundays. The present Saturday senior team has been playing since the 1996/97 season, starting life in the Craven & District Football League Division Two after the said team had progressed through the junior section within the club. They spent 3 years in the Craven League moving up to the Premier Division and in the last year in that division, set a new record of going through the season unbeaten in all competitions. From there they joined the West Riding County Amateur League in Division Two and quickly gained promotion up into the Premier Division where they enjoyed three seasons. In season 2002/2003 Silsden set another record in going through the season unbeaten in all competitions. To add to this they also won the West Riding County Challenge Cup for the third successive season, a feat only achieved by one other club. It was clear that the team was ready for football at a higher level and in season 2004/2005 Silsden joined the North West Counties League. Without floodlights and an enclosed pitch, the Cobbydalers were forced to play their home games at Cougar Park, the home of Rugby League Club, Keighley Cougars. The Cobbydalers gained promotion to the top division in their inaugural season, finishing as runners up to runaway winners Cammell Laird, and had their most successful runs in the FA Cup and FA Vase Competitions. The club's aim was to move back to the Keighley Road ground at the earliest opportunity and the club (Football and Cricket)

embarked on a period of fund raising accruing over £100,000. Finally the development took place, with the help of a £663,453 grant from the Football Foundation, as part of its continuing investment in grass-roots football and an additional Football Foundation grant of £300,000 through the Community Club Development Programme. In May 2009 the building of a new clubhouse & changing facilities was completed and August 2010 saw the completion of the ground improvements which meant a return of Silsden AFC to its rightful place.... back in Silsden! The Cobbydalers have maintained their position in the top division of the NWCFL and in 2015 embark on their tenth season in the division, their best year being in season 200809 when they finished ninth with 58 points. Silsden AFC have also a progressive junior set up with age groups running from Under 5's right through to Under 19's. Some age groups run two teams making this one of the largest football clubs in the area. There is a prestigious Junior Competition each year running over the first weekend of July and the club also have three ladies teams. With the of the folding of the NWCFL League, Silsden Reserves will be playing in the Lancashire League East Division in 2014-15. The club prides itself on being a Friendly Club with close links with the Community. Various Charity events are held every summer on the field along with the facilities being used by the local Primary School, Silsden Majorettes and the Scouts. Bradford Schools use the fields for their home games and there are plans for Craven College to use them. This summer Camping was held as the Tour de France passed the ground with five helicopters landing and taking off from the first team pitch.

FIXTURE BACK-LOG Fri 29th January 2016 | NWCFL Blog | By Paul Lawler - NWCFL Chairman There has been no doubt that the main talking point of the past few months among league officials, club officials and supporters has been around the weather and the impact on football fixtures throughout the country. Fixtures were the main topic of conversation at our recent League Management Committee meeting, in which we debated how to deal with the current crop of postponements and how to tackle the back-log that was building up. It would be fair to say that opinions were divided among my colleagues as to how and when to tackle the situation.

this statement). We know the weather is bad, but we also know there are occasional windows of opportunity to try and get games played. It is better to schedule games and hope some survive the weather, than have a day where games can be played, but none are scheduled. Take Thursday evening’s Men United Cup ties. On Thursday morning the pitch at Atherton Colls was playable, only for the severe storms to close in later in the afternoon rendering it unplayable. Sadly when scheduling fixtures we don’t have the benefit of knowing the forecast but it shows the fine line between getting a game on and it being called off.

Personally I am in favour of tackling the problem before it becomes a major issue, in order to avoid some of the backlog problems we have faced in the past. It therefore amazes me when we received complaints and criticism from the very people who complain when clubs are made to play several games within a short space of time towards the end of the season. We are also receiving complaints that clubs have only played once or twice since the turn of the year. It strikes me that we cannot win on this one – we are damned if we do and damned if we don’t. The Management Committee agreed to try and address the fixture backlog now in order to try and prevent further backlog, in the hope that we are able to complete some of the scheduled fixtures. Let me be clear, we aren’t stupid people (although I know a number of people would challenge

I have seen a number of arguments about playing postponed fixtures later in the season, when the weather is better. However, recent experience shows that the weather can be as unpredictable in March and April as it is in January and February. That is why we are trying to get as many games played as we can in order to achieve an orderly end to the season. The other benefit of trying to get games in is the impact postponements have on club finances. Many clubs have experienced significant falls in revenue due to games being off. Likewise, the impact on cash flow from playing too many times in a short period of time can also impact clubs, especially if they have to play several away matches. I believe we are trying doing the right thing in difficult circumstances, even if we don’t win friends in the process!
