Welcome to Ashton Athletic Good afternoon and welcome to Brookburn Road for today’s Hallmark Security Premier Division game against Ashton Athletic. We welcome their officials, players and fans and we hope they enjoy our hospitality this afternoon. It’s only 4 weeks since we visited Brocstedes Park for the first fixture and on the night our injury depleted squad worked extremely hard to gain a much needed 3 points following a run of 3 successive home defeats. We are therefore well aware that our visitors will be determined to reverse that result today and we need to be at our best to win the 3 points. We are always made welcome at Brocstedes and we are pleased to have the chance to reciprocate today. Since that game the Yellows have hit a hot streak in front of goal, beating Nelson, Lairds and Darwen by a combined score of 16-0 before an outstanding result last Saturday when they came from 2 goals down to win at Runcorn Linnets in the Macron Cup. They were somewhat brought back down to earth however by a 6-0 home defeat to Bootle on Tuesday. They arrive here today in 11th place, 6 points behind ourselves but with a game in hand. Our own results continue to frustrate. Away at Runcorn Town an even 1st half which ended 2-2 was completely undone by a 2nd half collapse which saw us go down 6-2. Last Saturday at home to Darwen saw our unbelievable run of injuries continue, Martyn Andrews was forced to pull out during the warm up then during the 1st half both centre backs, Nia Bayunu and Anthony Potts were forced from the field. This left us with no natural centre halves and we played the 2nd half with the unusual pairing of midfielder Jordan Poole and assistant manager Steve Brockley in defence. It was very pleasing to watch as every player then worked so hard to give us a 3-0 victory. On Tuesday an eventful game at Nelson, where the lead changed hands several times ended in a 4-4 draw. We felt we should have won the game but at a goal down with a minute left we were glad to rescue a point. Community Bonfire Don’t forget our Community Bonfire tonight, we hope the weather holds up and everyone has a fantastic night. Who’s up next? Today’s game is the start of another 3 home games in a week sequence as we host Padiham on Tuesday night in the Lancashire FA Trophy before welcoming AFC Liverpool next Saturday in the League. Following that we have our 3rd taste of Friday night football when we visit Abbey Hey on 18 November. Tuesday 8th November – Padiham (h) 7.45pm ko Saturday 12th November – AFC Liverpool (h) 3.00pm ko Friday 18th November – Abbey Hey (a) 7.45pm ko Our Manchester Premier Cup tie against Glossop North End at Glossop has now been arranged for Tuesday 29 November.

Enjoy the game, and a safe journey home to all after the game.

Steve Settle’s Notes Good afternoon everybody and welcome to Brookburn Road for this afternoons North West Counties League fixture against our friends from Ashton. We hope that their officials and supporters have an enjoyable visit to Chorlton today and we wish them well for the rest of the season. Ben, Dougie and Jay have done a tremendous job in the last few years and we know from our visit to their place a couple of weeks ago that they will be a handful today. Seven days ago we faced Darwen at home after a terrible run of form that had seen us win just one of the previous six games. We knew that in Darwen and Nelson we had two winnable games to get ourselves back on track. Against Darwen we suffered a blow in the warm up when Martyn Andrews had some trouble with his knee and was forced to pull out. We were already without Matty Kay and Joe Shaw which meant Jordan Poole, Carlos and Rick Gleave got a chance to impress in midfield. We started the game quite well and Ricky Gleave popped up with a great goal. As if our ever growing injury list wasn’t already ridiculous enough it was further exacerbated after 20 mins when Nia felt his calf leaving us short at centre half, if that wasn’t enough Pottsy had to come off at half time with a dead leg. This meant we played the entire 2nd half with Brocks and Jordan Poole at the heart of our defence. In the end they were both exceptional and they both played a large part in us keeping a clean sheet. Going forward I thought we were always a threat but the game turned into a bit of a basketball game in the 2nd half and on another day Darwen could have got back into the game. Going into the game away at Nelson on Tuesday I was hopeful that at least one of our centre halves would have recovered enough to play. Thankfully Pottsy was just about fit enough to start in what was a very young team. Before the game I was naming a really strong 11 that we have unavailable through suspensions or injuries. It does however give our younger members of the squad an opportunity to get some valuable experience. Carlos, Georgi, Ben Woods, Rob Black, Ben Steer and Jordan Poole are all still really young and the experience they are getting

this year will stand them in good stead for the future. Again we started well with a well placed Jonny P header but then we switched off for 15 minutes and gifted Nelson two very preventable goals, one a penalty as the forward had his back to goal and then getting caught out from a throw in!!! We finished the half really strongly and scored two really good goals via Ash and Pottsy and I fully expected us to go on and win the game comfortably. It’s a funny old game though and again we became too open as the game went end to end. We were worried when Deano looked to have taken a nasty knock but thankfully he was ok and we showed good character to nick an equaliser in injury time. Given the extent of our injury list and the average age of our team, I was pleased with 4 points from the 2 games. Our injury list really is frightening. At the moment we have an injured or unavailable squad of Rubz, Mason, Rogers, Nia, Simmo, Andrews, Gavin, Lilley, Kay and Shaw. Arguably all of those players would consider themselves starters and as such it is a testimony to our strength in depth that we are still able to be competitive! The lads are under no illusions that today will be a tough game and we will have to be at our best to get anything from it! As always, thanks for the support and enjoy the game!

NWCFL Premier Division – Results (after 1 November)

WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

The History of Ashton Athletic Ashton Athletic Football Club was founded in 1968 and playing in the Wigan Sunday League winning every Division in consecutive seasons and many cup competitions before switching to the Warrington League on Saturdays where similar success was sustained. The Club developed Brocstedes Park and was admitted to the Lancashire Combination, before becoming a founder member of the North West Counties League when the Combination merged with the Cheshire league in 1982. Unfortunately financial constraints prevented the required ground improvements to be completed, and the Club was relegated into the Manchester league Division One in 1986. The drop of two leagues resulted in the majority of the playing staff moving to other clubs and for numerous years the club endeavored to re-build. Players came and went, lacking the Club loyalty that had brought success to the Club in the 1970`s and early 80`s until the Committee embraced an ambitious youth development policy in 1999. The Club is now at the end of a ten-year development plan to enhance its recreational facilities and expand the Club, in particular its junior section. Eight years ago the Club had two teams, 50 members, one mediocre pitch with dilapidated clubhouse and changing rooms. Since then the Club members have worked tirelessly to progress the Club within its means, and with some help from external grant sources. Assistance from the Football foundation, Awards for All programme, and Wigan Council enabled a series of improvements to be completed. The main pitch was re-drained, a second pitch acquired/improved, new changing rooms and Clubhouse built, disabled access provided and other improvements made to the grounds. More recently the ground has been brought up to the necessary Ground Grading for re-entry into

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

the NWCFL, in time for the start of the 2006/7 season and further inprovements have provided additional seating. The 2008/2009 season also sees a further progression of the Club, having been promoted to the Premier Division of the North West Counties League. We will again take to the national stage, having been accepted in the FA Cup competition after last season`s debut in the FA Vase which proved very lucrative for the Club, progressing through 3 stages and beating 2 teams from higher leagues in the process. Last season also saw cup success for the Club retaining the Atherton Charity Cup at the end of the season. A new vision for the Club is under discussion to further develop the Club and these will include plans for improvements to the access road, new junior changing rooms, and additional playing fields for the junior section and a proposed girls/Ladies section. The main ground is also scheduled for enhancement works with additional covered spectator areas. The Club is a voluntary organisation run by a Committee of 14 alongside approximately 25 coaches and managers. Any money raised by the Club has been ploughed back into improving the facilities and developing the youth section. The Club now has a total membership of more than 400. We have 9 junior teams consisting of approximately 160 children who take advantage of the improvement of our now excellent facilities, whilst hundreds of children and adults from opposition teams also benefit from the continually improving facilities. In addition to the 2 open age teams occasional run outs for the veteran`s team, providing a further 20 members, the highlight being the now annual Challenge match against the Past Players of Wigan Athletic FC. The Club is keen to maintain the pace of development of the club and future plans will enable increased activity at the Club, additional Junior teams and a much safer and secure environment in particular for spectators and Children. The Club is also committed and positively working towards an application to the FA for Charter Standard, and an intensive Coach Education Programme is well under way.

Runcorn Town 6 West 2 match report…Wednesday 26 October West succumbed to their heaviest defeat of the season as they shipped four second half goals away to Runcorn Town. West's injuries refused to abate as Steve Settle handed a full debut to 17 year old Carlos Mendes Gomes as he named 8 players in his squad aged 22 or younger. West started brightly as Rob Black put Mendes Gomes through with a terrific pass, the teenager rounded the goalkeeper but could only strike the foot of the post from a narrow angle on 5 minutes. Two minutes later he would make no mistake as Ash Woods played him through and the Spaniard slotted into the bottom corner to give West the lead. The lead last just 6 minutes as West failed to clear a cross from the left, it fell to Joe Holt at the edge of the area who slotted it into the bottom right hand corner. West retook the lead three minutes later following a trip inside the area allowing Matty Kay to send the keeper the wrong way. On 20 minutes it was almost 3-1 as superb attacking play from Richmond Botchey down the left played in Ash Woods who fired inches wide of the post.

Runcorn Town made the most of the miss as they punted the ball long allowing Craig Cairns to round Andrew Robertson in the West goal and roll it into the net. West almost responded with a third as a deflected effort looped over the Runcorn Town goalkeeper whose reactionary save tipped it onto the bar. A minute later Anthony Potts headed just wide from a superb Matty Kay free kick. Despite the physical threats posed to him Mendes Gomes continued to shine as he played in Ash Woods who in turn forced a superb save from the goalkeeper before Robertson was called into making a terrific save of his own at the near post. In the second half West fell behind on 53 minutes when Robertson dropped a free kick allowing Simon Thelwall to tap into an empty net. It was 4-2 five minutes later when Marcus James headed in an in-swinging corner on the line. It was 5-2 on 77 minutes when Cairns was given time and space rounding Robertson to slot home. The sixth was added in the 96th minute as West conceded possession on the half way line and David Forbes finished into the bottom corner.

Today’s Match Sponsor: Dave Cooper We are very grateful to Dave for sponsoring todays’s match against Ashton Athletic. Dave is a West man through and through; he joined West Didsbury, as it was then called, in late 1979 just after his 29th birthday. Dave got his big chance as a substitute for the second team at Christie’s playing field. Fortunately the left back was injured and Dave took his place and made it his own. Later that season, he broke into the first team. The next season, West took on a new first team manager who had played with Dave in the past and as a consequence his games for the first team were few and far between. So for most of the next ten seasons, Dave played left back for the seconds. However, players were short one weekend and the second team manager pushed Dave into midfield, on his birthday no less, and he scored two magnificent goals. The second team manager was a certain R.Turley and apparently he doesn’t like people outscoring him so Dave was back to left back the next game. Dave won second team player of the year award. It was presented to him by a new Manchester Utd manager; A. Ferguson. One of the highlights of Dave’s career was winning the Clubman of the year and having it presented by Bobby Charlton at Old Trafford. Dave left the club in 1999 after it had relocated and established itself at Brookburn Road but after a few years watching Burnley, decided to return to the now called ‘West Didsbury and Chorlton AFC’ and help out on committee. However, Dave would like to thank all the friends he has made at West for all the enjoyable times he has had with them mainly on Saturday afternoon. WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

History of West…PART 4 – The Twenties…continued In 1925 new dressing rooms were erected as the club moved across Christies to occupy a pitch vacated by Old Trafford St. John’s who had found a new ground in the Old Trafford area. Funds to cover this and the usual expenses were raised by dances and whilst drives held in the West Didsbury Public Hall on Burton Road, and this was also the venue for entertaining visiting opponents after Lancashire Amateur Cup Ties when refreshments and a dance were often organised. Match publicity was a regular feature with weekly posters prepared and displayed on the pavilion at Christies and around the shops known as the Lapwing Lane Arcade. The notice board here also carried the weekly teamsheets and became a common meeting place for the players to debate the committee’s team selection after their Monday evening meeting. For a short time, a local photographer took match photographs and put these on display in his studio window near Nell Lane. Unfortunately none of these survive, but it may be that some of the early team photographs were his work. Although the 1926-27 season was described as erratic by the secretary in his summary of the year, the Rhodes Cup was captured for the first time as Davenport were overcome in the final, and the team ‘… so satisfied J C Edwards’s desire for an ornament on his sideboard’. In fact the assault on the Rhodes Cup of

that season began and finished on South Manchester’s pitch as they provided the opposition in the first game and also hosted the final. The detailed record in that cup-winning run was as follows: January 8th 1927 South Manchester (A) 4-1 (Brierley, Holmes, Massey, J Pyatt) February 5th 1927 Chapelmoor (H) 7-3 (Massey 5, Brierley, J Pyatt) March 5th 1927 Bramhall (N) 6-2 (Stanway, Holmes, Robinson, F Pyatt, Brierley 2) April 2nd 1927 Davenport (Final) 2-1 (Holmes & Brierley) Whilst the first XI were winning the cup the second XI again finished runners-up in Division A, to Longsight, and in the Aggregate Trophy the club were also runners-up, this time to South Salford.

From the 1920’s to 2017… The development of our Club will continue next season as we plan to run a West Women’s team.

WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

Around the league…from last Saturday’s games… with Ian Templeman Looking good all round for Colls A quick glance at the Premier Division goal stats suggests that it's looking good in all departments for Atherton Collieries right now. They have the third best goals scored ratio and the best goals conceded ratio in the division, and overall those are the best all round stats of any of the promotion chasers in the top five. Unbeaten in eight games, Colls are tucked in nicely behind league leaders Runcorn Town, and once again look a good bet for success this season. Cobbydalers break losing streak in style If there was one result on Saturday that threw the form book out of the window, it was Silsden's 8-2 win at New Mills in the Macron Cup. The Cobbydalers travelled to Church Lane to face their Premier Division opponent on the back of five straight defeats, and although they do have a bit of form in high scoring games away from home - as a 6-6 draw at Oswestry a few weeks back would confirm it's fair to say that Saturday's result was not one that many would have seen coming. With two more cup ties coming up in the next week, manager James Gill will be looking for more of the same from his side. Abbey on song One team starting to run into a bit of form are Abbey Hey, who followed up their midweek 4-0 win over Cammell Laird 1907 with a 3-1

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

win in the Macron Cup at Ashton Town on Saturday. It's now five wins in six games for Luke Gibson's side, and although they have a tough looking fixture schedule in the next few weeks, manager Luke Gibson will be heartened that they go into it on a decent run of form. Yellow fighting spirit On these pages last week we gave a shout out to Ashton Athletic's goalscoring prowess of late, and while that continued in midweek with a fine 4-0 win at Darwen, they showed qualities of a different kind at Runcorn Linnets on Saturday. Two goals down away from home with 15 minutes to go is no great position to be in, but the Yellows turned it around to end up winning 3-2, showing that fighting spirit and a never-say-die attitude is in their armoury along with goalscoring firepower. Chaddy away day goal power There's something about away trips that seem to galvanise Chadderton into goalscoring mode at the moment. Already this season they have scored five on the road at St Helens Town, and four in games at Stockport Town, Cheadle Town and Widnes, but they topped that on Saturday with a 6-3 win at Holker Old Boys in the Macron Cup. They may be in the bottom half of the First Division at the moment, but that sort of goalscoring form suggests that Chaddy will be a force to be reckoned with on any ground this season.

West 3 AFC Darwen 0 match report‌Saturday 29 October West ended a run of three straight defeats with an incident filled 3-0 home win against AFC Darwen. West manager Steve Settle rang the changes following Wednesday's mid-week defeat away to Runcorn Town as Dean Williams, Rick Gleave, Jordan Poole and Jonny Poizer were recalled to the starting line up, albeit the latter following Martyn Andrews withdrawing in the warm up. West started brightly and on five minutes Rob Black forced Darwen goalkeeper Proctor into the games first save as he blocked a hard shot at his near post following a superb through ball. A minute later West rattled the crossbar as Jonny Poizer unleashed a furious volley from a tight angle. Darwen responded on seven minutes when Jason Cunliffe rolled a long range effort barely round the post. However it was West who took the lead on 10 minutes when a superb through ball from Ash Woods released Rick Gleave one-on-one and the West number 10 did well to open his body and pass his effort into the bottom left hand corner. Darwen's response came on 20 minutes when they were awarded a penalty for handball but fortunately for West Williams guessed correctly pushing out a low effort to his right. West capitalised on the reprieve as they doubled their lead on 29 minutes as Ben Woods found his way into the penalty, following good work on the wing from Black and Carlos Mendes Gomes, pulling his cross back allowing Ash Woods to bury his first time effort into the bottom left hand corner. The joy would be short lived for West as Nina Bayunu limped off following the goal to be replaced by Steve Brockley with Captain Anthony Potts also being forced off at the break. West pushed for a third before half time as Ash Woods headed just wide from a

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

Botchey free kick and Jonny Poizer had a hard low effort pushed just barely round the post. They had the ball in the net just before half time as Potts flicked on a wonderful free kick allowing Ash Woods to finish from close range but the flag was up for offside. The second half was just two minutes old when West created their first chance as Brockley rose highest to a Ben Woods corner and saw his shouldered effort cleared off the line. Darwen had their own effort cleared off the line just before the hour mark as Williams failed to hold onto a free kick into the box. On 63 minutes substitute Ben Steer made it 30 as he raced through and unleashed a rocket off an effort into the top corner from 25 yards out. Three minutes later he should have doubled his goal tally as a wonderful West counter released Ash Woods down the left, his low cross found Steer at the far post but he was denied by a sensational block on the line. Moments later Ash Woods was denied himself by another superb block as Darwen put their bodies on the line. Darwen, to their credit, didn't give up and had a goal disallowed with 15 minutes to go when they headed home a free kick but the referee blew for a foul. A minute later another free kick saw their header rebound off the bar but West scrambled it away. The save of the match came on 77 minutes when West countered a Darwen attack and Black forced Proctor into a superb finger tip save to force Black's curled effort round the post. Not to be out done Williams himself came up with a terrific save from another Darwen free kick on 82 minutes. In the final moments Darwen had a goal disallowed for offside but West saw the game out for a deserved and hard fought three points.
