Runcorn Linnets
It seems only a few weeks back at the end of April that we were welcoming The Linnets for the final home game of last season and Andy Nelson’s farewell. That was an unforgettable afternoon when West really rose to the big game occasion and secured our first victory over Runcorn with a 2-0 win. After making the pace for most of last season Runcorn were pipped to the title by an incredible run by Glossop North End making defeat here at Brookburn Road a hard one to take. However, all the Runcorn Players and management stayed behind after the game for the farewell celebration and comments from our players to Andy and showed a level of true sportsmanship and graciousness in their actions which was a huge credit to that club. It was also testament to the good relations which have always been enjoyed between our respective clubs officials, management and players and we are pleased to welcome everyone associated with Runcorn to the game this afternoon. This is our third season of competing against Runcorn with the results in 2013-14 being a 0-0 draw at Runcorn and a 2-0 away win for Runcorn here. Last season we took a hammering 6-0 away before gaining our first win 2-0 here in the penultimate game of the season referred to above. We have previously mentioned the helpful advice from Linnets officials, sharing their experience of bringing together adult and junior football under the umbrella of a single community based club and look forward to showing them our new grass pitches where junior football has finally taken root over the past couple of weeks. The Linnets supporters have also made us very welcome on our various visits, starting with our first visit to the Millbank stadium when we won the Division One Cup in our first season, following this with a standing ovation for our defensive display in the 0-0 first Premier Division game between us, and we trust they enjoy our hospitality today whatever the result. 200 passed as WEST GO NAP! Last Saturday saw a tremendous game against Padiham and a timely reminder of just how well we can play. This result was a great boost and came hard on the heels of a week when luck and results had deserted us during our games on the road at Winsford United and Ashton Athletic. We went to Winsford in good heart following successive wins over Barton Town in The FA Vase and away at Bootle, but went down to a late goal at Winsford, when we could easily have taken all 3 points. At Ashton we matched and outplayed the home team for much of the first half but were reduced to ten men and the rest is history. No need to repeat the last programme match reports. Against Padiham we had another encouraging crowd of just over 100 and there was a combination of buzz and tension around the ground during the early stages as both teams probed for a weakness. We just about edged the first half and the first goal, our 200th in the NW Counties, came after a flowing move across the pitch with Callum Jones advancing towards the edge of the Padiham box to rifle home a cracking drive. It was still a tight affair with an hour gone and then it was 2-0 courtesy of a clever player managerial assist to tee up Ashley Woods. That second goal released wave after wave of attacking football which Padiham couldn’t answer and the only surprise was that the final score was only 5. We went close on several occasions and also rattled the woodwork, sorry I mean aluminium.. The reaction of the home supporters was great to see with the team leaving to a standing ovation and the very sporting Padiham visitors and officials also complementing us on our second half performance. We now need to build on that result and get something from our home games today and again next week in the FA Vase. During October we are at home midweek on 3 successive weeks in a series of floodlit midweek evening games starting on Tuesday 6th October against Alsager, followed by Cammell Laird on Tuesday 13th and then Nelson on Tuesday 20th. The next month will be pivotal in getting ourselves further up the league table so why not invite a few friends down for an enjoyable evening out and the chance to get behind the lads. Steve Settle’s Notes Good afternoon and welcome to Brookburn Road for this afternoons NWCFL fixture against title favourites Runcorn Linnets. We hope that their officials, players and fans enjoy our hospitality and, after today of course, we wish them well for the rest of the season. Games like today are the ones you look forward to the most at the start of the season. Joey, Stuey and James Standing are great football people which is probably best characterised by the gestures they made at the end of last season in Andys last home game in charge. Despite their own disappointments in being pipped for promotion they stayed behind to congratulate Andy on his achievements in the game. In addition to this, 2 seasons ago Andy and Tony Holmes had an accident on the way to Runcorn and they had the training balls and bibs with them. On hearing this James made sure we were equipped with balls, bibs and cones to undertake a warm up. Again a lovely gesture. Last season Runcorn and Glossop were the standout teams. Indeed Runcorn will feel unlucky as only an amazing Glossop run in the new year prevented them from winning the league. The way I know Joey and Stuey, I’m sure that they will be determined to go one better this time around. They have started the season strongly again and I expect today to be one of the toughest games of the season. The lads will have to be at their best to make sure we have a chance to win the game. This season we have had some bad luck with injuries! Starting from the first game of the season we have had to adapt with players playing out of position and doing a job for us. Consequently our performances have been a little inconsistent and often we have not picked up the points that we’ve deserved. Last Saturdays game was particularly pleasing. I’ve been saying to the lads that someone was going to get a hiding soon and on Saturday I saw signs that the lads are starting to understand and implement how we want to
play, on the front foot, taking the game to our opponents. I was delighted for Ash Woods to get 2 goals and also for Rusty, coming off the bench to open his account for the year. I was keen to get Ben Steer some pitch time as I see him playing an important role for us in the coming weeks. It was also pleasing to get Mark Rogers and Richmond Botchey into the back four as well. Although a little short of match fitness both players were excellent and will only get better as they pick up sharpness. On the injury front Sam Dee is getting back to full fitness and we are still awaiting a scan for Simmo to ascertain the scale of his injury. Scott Jones is continuing his rehab but I expect it to be a while before we see him fit and ready to play. This is counter balanced by the welcome news that Nic Evangelinos is back in the North West for his studies. Following his strong contribution last season, we will be looking to get him involved as we look to pick up more points and progress in the cup competitions in October. West 5 Padiham 1 …match report West recorded their biggest win in the NWCFL for almost a year as they ran riot in a scintillating second half performance. It was the first ever meeting between West and Padiham as they arrived at Brookburn Road on a stunning September afternoon. West were buoyed by the return of captain Mark Rogers to the side for his first start since the first week of the season and the return for Richmond Botchey for his first appearance of the season. Padiham were looking to complete a week of wins in South Manchester having dispatched neighbours Maine Road 3-0 at Brantingham Road on Monday. It was the visitors who started the brighter of the two teams and they created the game’s first chance as a free kick was pumped into the box, it was knocked down off the back of the Padiham forward who turned a volley a first time effort just over the bar. West responded and on 9 minutes a ball down the right found Steve Settle, he crossed low into the box finding Ash Woods reaching but his touch forced the ball inches wide of the near post. Woods continued to threaten and went close again when he latched onto a ball down the left wing, he raced down the by-line and forced the Padiham goalkeeper into a strong save at his near post. Both teams created a series of chances as Padiham had a dangerous shot from the edge area defected just wide and then fired just wide from the resulting corner. West had another good chance as they broke down the left after a period of Padiham pressure but Lewis Schofield’s goal bound effort was blocked for a throw in. Padiham responded by flashing a low cross along the edge of the six yard line which just evaded everyone. West threatened as a pass from Woods found Kay, he switched his feet brilliantly to evade his man but fired over with his weaker foot on 26 minutes. On 33 minutes West had the lead when a great move by West saw the ball switched quickly from left to right at the edge of the penalty area teeing up Callum Jones to fire into the top right hand corner of the net. West’s momentum continued and had a penalty shout turned down as Lee Gavin went down in the penalty area following a good tackle from the Padiham full back.

In the second half it was West who were quickest to settle and had the first chance of the second half when a Woods cross found Schofield at the far post who fired just wide. West goalkeeper Hayden Buckley-Smith was called into action at the other end as Padiham broke the offside trap but the shot was well saved by the West keeper. On 59 minutes West made it 2-0 as a cross to the far post found Settle, he headed down back across goal to Woods who finished low into the bottom right hand corner for his third goal of the season. West were on the front foot now and Botchey drove brilliantly through the middle of the field, beating three men and feeding the ball through to Settle out wide who beat his man and squared it to Matty Kay but he could only fire his shot over the bar. West continued to press and another cross into the box evaded everyone bar Woods who volleyed first time from a narrow angle and just put it past the post. On 72 minutes it was 3-0 as Kay finally got his goal after brilliant work from Woods as he raced through the middle, playing in Kay inside the penalty area, the first shot was well saved by the keeper but Kay managed to tap in the rebound. West didn’t ease off and should have made it four when Gavin fired over a good effort whilst Dan Russell, on for Setttle, forced a terrific near post save from the Padiham goalkeeper with Woods waiting un-marked to tap it into an empty net. From the following corner the cross reached Woods at the far post and he headed against the outside of the post. West made it 4-0 on 80 minutes as Woods finally got his second goal as Russell played him in with a lovely pass into the penalty area and Woods finished brilliantly. Padiham didn’t give up and they pulled a goal back on 82 minutes. A Padiham free kick was tipped over by Buckley-Smith, the corner was whipped in with the initial effort hitting the bar before Fowler fired home the rebound. However West would have the final say as a minute later Dan Russell scored against his former club racing into the box and finishing low into the bottom left hand corner. A breathless final few minutes saw both teams create chances but West were able to savour their first home league win of the season.

Looking back our new feature on Football History No 7 We all know about the exploits of the giants that are Manchester United and Manchester City. Across the country, and even the world, iconic places and people like Old Trafford, Maine Road, Bert Trautman and George Best are regularly spoken of with fondness and reverence. But Manchester has seen a great many more interesting pieces of footballing history. Here, we explore some of the lesser known aspects of Manchester's rich tapestry of football history.
Fatty Foulkes There's a time old question, asked by football fans across the globe and at all levels; "Who ate all the pies?" Most probably think the question is rhetorical, but not so. In fact, the answer is here; the one and only Fatty Foulkes. Goalkeeper William "Fatty" Foulkes has a special place in Manchester's football history, having appeared in one of the first ever matches to be filmed, for Sheffield Wednesday against Manchester United at Old Trafford as part of the famous Mitchell & Kenyon films. An imposing figure, six foot four and twenty four stone, Foulkes had started his sporting career as a professional cricketer with Derbyshire County CC. He began playing football for his local village side before being discovered by Wednesday in 1894 where he became rather prolific, notching 299 league appearences and winning two FA Cups and a League Championship, as well as earning his single England cap. But despite his considerable football ability, Foulkes was rather erratic. He attained legendary status for an occasion on which he emerged from the changing rooms "in a state of undress" and pursued a referee who had incensed him earlier in the game for his
allegedly poor decisions. Had the offending referee not sought shelter in a nearby broom cupboard, it can well be imagined that he might have been torn to pieces. He moved to Chelsea in 1905 for the princely sum of ÂŁ50. Here, his temprement did not improve, as he walked off the field on several occasions due to his defence "not trying hard enough".But at this time, Foulkes inadvertantly made another lasting contribution to football culture. Since Foulkes was something of a crowd puller for Chelsea, the directors of the club decided to emphasize his enormous girth by placing two small boys close to him during games, standing just behind the goal. These boys would retrieve the ball for Foulkes when it went out of play and thus, the ballboy came into being. After a short spell at Bradford City, Foulkes fell out of favour and retired from football. There are insubstantiated rumours which claim that this once great footballer, struggling with poverty, was forced into participation at a sideshow in Blackpool, as a "beat the goalie" game. Whilst this may be untrue, it is known that Foulkes grew poor and died of cirrhosis in Sheffield aged only 42.

Visiting Brookburn Road today… Runcorn Linnets Review of the 2014-15 season Aiming to go one better after successive second places With runners-up finishes in the last two Premier Division campaigns, Runcorn Linnets may have earned the tag of North West Counties League “nearly men”. But the Linnets feel they are getting ever closer to glory with the first team’s league performance now improving year on year. Despite the double disappointment at missing out again on promotion, they would have accrued a club record 98 points in 2014-15 but for losing the six won against Stockport Sports as a consequence of the Saxons folding during the season. The Linnets led the table for most of the season but were eventually overtaken by Glossop North End, who prevailed thanks to their higher win ratio with both clubs having lost only four of their 40-game league matches. This continued progress of the senior men’s side – along with the birth of Runcorn Linnets Ladies and the growth of youth and junior football - was rewarded with the prize of Cheshire’s Charter Standard Club of the Year in the FA Community Awards supported by McDonald’s. Fielding an unprecedented 31 teams, the club was also highly commended at the annual Halton Sports Awards. On the field, success was less forthcoming in the cup competitions although the cause wasn’t helped by tough away draws against inform EvoStik League side Droylsden in the FA Cup and Shaw Lane Aquaforce, eventual Toolstation Northern Counties East League Premier Division champions, in the FA Vase. An individual landmark saw winger Matthew Atherton set a new club appearance record with his 203rd Linnets outing in September. This has since been significantly extended by the popular winger. At the start of the season, the Linnets had announced a further three-year extension to their successful and highly-valued partnership

with club sponsors The Millbank Group in a move which will now run to the end of 2017-18 season. Millbank have been principal backers of the Linnets since February 2010, when work began on a new hometown ground for the club in the Murdishaw district and the leading engineering recruitment business secured naming rights on what was to become known as The Millbank Linnets Stadium. The Linnets have certainly come a long way since starting from square one in 2006 as a fans-owned phoenix club for the former English national non-league champions and threetimes FA Trophy finalists Runcorn AFC, who had latterly played as Runcorn FC Halton in Widnes and Prescot. Back to the beginning – how Runcorn Linnets were formed Runcorn Linnets Football Club was born on 28 April 2006 after Runcorn AFC had intimated that they would not be in a position to field a team in the following season. Since leaving town in 2000, the club had suffered a troubled and nomadic existence. Fans met at on their spiritual home of Canal Street – in the Quayside function rooms next door to the now Linnets Park housing estate on which Runcorn’s ground had stood. Those supporters, determined not to let 88 years of football tradition die, voted to establish a new community club. An existing Supporters Trust was remodelled to run Runcorn Linnets, whose identity was derived from Runcorn AFC’s nickname. With only four months to the start of a new season, business and action plans were drawn up and negotiations opened with the FA, the Cheshire FA, the NWCL, Supporters Direct and Witton Albion FC in Wincham, Northwich, where Linnets ground shared for four seasons. The club was accepted into the NWCL league by the member clubs on Saturday 17 June 2006 at the AGM in Buxton and former Runcorn player and boss Steve Carragher joined as manager.

Coming home to a first winner’s trophy
Visiting unfamiliar grounds and making new friends along the way, the 2006-07 season was both enjoyable and successful as promotion was won from Division Two (now Division One) to Division One (now Premier Division) at the first attempt - as runners-up on goal difference to Winsford United.
Dreams became reality as The Millbank Linnets Stadium officially opened on July 17th 2010 when the visit of former landlords Witton Albion attracted a crowd of more than 1,000.
Striking a balance between paying the rent, funding the team and building reserves for the desired Runcorn homecoming proved challenging; it also took time to come to terms with the higher standard of football at the next level and the last three seasons at Witton brought modest mid-table positions. In season 2007/08 the Linnets entered the FA Vase for the first time but after victory in a preliminary round, there was a first-round exit to Salford City. Averaging 180 crowds at Wincham Park and invariably taking up to 100 fans to away grounds, the desire to relocate back into Runcorn was always paramount as the R2R ("Return to Runcorn") campaign was launched. Steve Wilkes, who had been manager at Padiham, succeeded Carragher at the beginning of 2008. Goalkeeper Robbie Holcroft provided continuity as the new manager’s assistant. 2008-09 saw first-time FA Cup involvement but the campaign highlight was reaching the Vodkat (League Challenge) Cup final at Tameside Stadium in Ashton-underLyne although Linnets were beaten 2-0 by league runners-up New Mills. Season 2009/10 saw The Linnets again finish midway while having little real success in the cup competitions. The main target throughout this time had been to get the club back into its home town. Original proposals to develop facilities at Riverside College in the Dukesfield area proved too costly but in June 2009 plans for the new ground at Murdishaw – on the municipal Halton Sports complex - were passed by Halton Borough Council Executive Board. Just before Christmas, the club was grant-funded £93,000 plus by the Football Stadium Improvement Fund (FSIF).
Season 2010/11, the first back in Runcorn, saw Steve Wilkes and his deputy Ian McGarry replaced towards the end of August. Former Linnet Paul McNally, having been assistant at Skelmersdale United was appointed manager – his backroom team including assistant Dave Hughes, the ex-Atherton LR boss, and coach Chris Fitzsimmons. A rebuilding process ended in a strong finish for 12th spot and average attendances were 106% up on the previous season at Witton. In 2011/12 the club achieved its highest placing thus far of fifth in the NWCL Premier. Highlight of the cup runs was the 4-0 replay defeat of Evo-stik North One visitors Mossley. The following season saw Paul McNally leave for personal reasons. Replacement Joey Dunn, a one-time Runcorn team-mate of McNally and assisted by Stuart Humphreys, led the club to its first major trophy, The Linnets defeated Formby in League Challenge Cup in front of more than 500 fans at Curzon Ashton FC. A three-month undefeated run from the start of the New Year secured sixth spot in the league. Excellent early form in 2013/14 brought a run in the FA Cup that saw two Evo-Stik League teams defeated before a 2-0 third qualifying round defeat at North Ferriby United of Conference North. Despite an impressive 95point return, Runcorn were beaten to the title by Norton United. Although last season’s deficit on Glossop was 10 points, three of Linnets’ four league defeats came in the final month after they had finally been overhauled by the relentless Derbyshire outfit, also League Challenge Cup winners and Wembley finalists in the FA Vase. In many other seasons, Runcorn would have gained more than enough points to be champions but it’s the firm belief of all involved with the Linnets as preparations continue for the 2015-16 campaign that thus far elusive title success is not far away.

West Youth Team Report West’s development reached a zenith, as the club played host to its most illustrious visitors to date. The visitors for the FA Youth Cup tie were Wrexham, a club whose first team plays in the Conference National division, in a stadium still used for international football. Even the Welsh dragons' youth set up is fully professional, training throughout the week, But West's youth, who train only once a week, did not roll over in this match against their full time opposition. Early stages of the game, watched on a cold Wednesday night by a healthy crowd of around 40, were relatively even, with both sides struggling to get to grips with the saturated pitch. But it was Wrexham who had the better of the first half, dominating possession and passing smoothly. Although the visitors' finishing left something to be desired, with several shots being fired well over the bar and a couple smashing off the woodwork. West looked dangerous on the counter, with several of the youngsters exhibiting their pace, but it was Wrexham who eventually took the lead through a penalty as the game approached the half hour mark. In the second half, Wrexham continued in the same vein as the first half, squandering their ample possession time after time with speculative shots from odd angles and long distances. Credit, however, must go to the West defence who gave a truly battling performance and closed down the Wrexham attack brilliantly. As the half went on, West began to have more possession, and their best chance of the game came on the hour when George Jones was sent through one on one, only for the Wrexham keeper to push his effort away. This seemed to galvanise West, and Wrexham found themselves on the back foot, struggling to cope with some dangerous runs down each wing. The pressure paid off, seventy minutes in, as West had a number of shots deflected by Wrexham defenders before the home side's number 9, Jones volleyed the ball into the top

corner with a powerful effort from the edge of the box. After the goal, Wrexham seemed to shift up a gear and applied considerable pressure to the West goal, though there was a counter attack or two to unsettle the Welsh visitors. The game looked destined for extra time, until a Wrexham player was fouled on the edge of the box. The resulting free kick was pushed out by the West keeper and deflected off several defenders, before a shot from outside the box was deflected into the corner. With only two minutes left on the clock, West had no time to equalise, and it was the professional side who progressed to the next round. Overall, West may feel hard done by to lose to a lucky pot shot with two minutes of time to go, but on the balance of play Wrexham deserved their victory. However, West’s part-time youngsters can feel proud of their accomplishment in matching a side of professionals mostly a year older than themselves for 90 minutes. It's great to see the club progressing so well both on and off the field.

Looking back to our last meeting‌ West fans will be hoping that the events of today's game are similar to the last time we met Runcorn Linnets. That game, played as our second to last game of the season in April 2015, was notable for being our long serving manager Andy Nelson's last game in charge of the team. It was a magnificent occasion, with 220 fans packed into into Brookburn Road to witness a 20 year long football management career come to a close. West, not threatened by relegation, but still in the lower reaches of the table, could have been forgiven for not feeling particularly optimistic about this game against promotion hopefuls Runcorn, but the players and fans could simply not have asked for a better result

as they ran out 2-0 winners with goals from David Short and Scott Mason and a man of the match performance from goalkeeper Paul Hughes. It must be noted that the officials, players and fans of Runcorn Linnets were very courteous in the way they treated Andy. The players formed a guard of honour for him before the game and at the final whistle, the fans applauded him, all the more impressive as they had just seen any chances of promotion for the season slip away and would have been justified in feeling slightly bitter. Hopefully, the good relationship between our two clubs will continue, though another three points for West from this encounter would not go amiss either!

Ground Safety In the interest of spectator comfort and safety, the following conditions apply at the clubs Brookburn Road ground and must be observed at all times.
In case of fire or other emergency that requires the clubhouse or ground to be evacuated instructions will be given over the public address system, and we ask that you comply with those instructions immediately. The chanting of racist or obscene chanting is strictly forbidden. Glasses, bottles, gas canisters, knives, darts, tools, flag poles or any other articles likely to cause injury are not permitted into the ground. Alcohol may be purchased and consumed in the bar area only. Children are not allowed in the Club House unless accompanied by an adult. Encroachment onto the playing area is forbidden at all times. Standing is not allowed in front of the seated areas. All forms of transport on the clubs car park is at the owners’ risk.
The club reserves the right to remove any person from the ground who is in breach of these rules or whose presence is a source of danger or annoyance to others. German fans visit West During our recent FA Vase match against Barton Town Old Boys, we had the unexpected pleasure of being visited by a group of fans from Hamburg, Germany. The 4 visitors were affiliated with a German amateur club F.C Alu. The history of F.C Alu is of some interest. When the club began play, none of its members wanted to play in goal, and so instead of scoring in the normal fashion, players would simply try to hit the crossbar, hence the name of Alu, which is abbreviated from aluminium, One member of the group, F.C Alu's club president was pleasantly surprised by what he saw at Brookburn Road. “I'm very surprised at the standard of the facilities. Back in Hamburg, the local clubs get no investment, but here there is a good traditional clubhouse. The game is good too, very fast, much better than the similar level in Germany.� The group bought West scarves, programmes and badges to commemorate their visit (as well as plenty of beer) and promised to come back if they were ever in the area again. As we won the game they attended, they could something of a good luck charm for the club and they would be very welcome if they ever did make a return to Brookburn Road!
