Barnoldswick Town

Good afternoon and welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Barnoldswick Town. We hope those who made the 45 mile trip from the east of Lancashire have a safe and pleasant journey home after the game. Barlick have had a win and a loss from their first two games of the season and I am sure they will provide a tough test for us today. We have a history of high scoring games against Town, having won 4-2 there on the opening day of last season and completed the double with a 3-2 win at home 2 months later. I'm sure that all in attendance will wish for a similarly thrilling game this afternoon. The current season has not seen the best of starts for West, with 4 games played now yielding 1 win and 3 losses. But things are not all doom and gloom. The opening day could have been very different, when a large crowd saw us lose 2-1 to Atherton Colleries, despite our taking the lead in the 85th minute! Of course, we picked up our first points of the season away at Alsager before two consecutive 3-0 defeats to very strong sides in the form of 1874 Northwich and AFC Liverpool. It certainly could have been better, but it could have been a lot worse, especially considering that AFC Liverpool had won their previous game 9-2. Unfortunately, Ben Steer will be out for the next 2-3 weeks, but there are plenty of other players ready to step into the breach. And with more personnel returning from their holidays, as is the norm for this time of year, the squad is bound to be looking a lot stronger soon. Let's push on today with a good performance against our Lancashire opponents and look forward to the rest of the season.

THE BREAD AND BUTTER OF THE LEAGUE Today our attention is back on the league we are home to 1874 Northwich at 7.45pm on Tuesday 1st September, however, this may be subject to change so keep your eye on our website. Another home game follows that on Saturday 5th September when we play Barton Town Old Boys in the FA Vase, Barton play in the Northern Counties East Premier Division, the equivalent Step 5 Division on the other side of the Pennines. We’re on the road again next week for another two league games, firstly at Nelson on Tuesday evening 25th August at 7.45pm and then to AFC Darwen on Saturday 29th August at 3pm. An intensive start to the season with seven fixtures in league and FA Cup in the space of 22 days, but then that’s life in the Premier Division of the NWCFL.

SPONSORSHIP We are pleased with the number of people who have supported the club with sponsoring pitch side panels; players shirt numbers, home matches and seats in the Rob Turley stand. Thank you for your support. Please see sheets in the clubhouse where you can add your name or your companies name if you are able to add your support to the club in this way. In the meantime ENJOY THE GAME today, have a safe journey home.

Steve Settle’s Notes Good afternoon and welcome to Brookburn Road for this afternoons NWCFL fixture against Barnoldswick Town. We hope that their officials, players and fans enjoy our hospitality and, after today of course, we wish them well for the rest of the season. Like ourselves Barnoldswick Town have had an indifferent and inconsistent start to the season. They had a good win against Blackpool and I’m sure, like ourselves, they will want to improve their league position from last year. Today’s game promises to be a tough test and the lads will have to be at their best to get a positive result tonight. I am writing these programme notes still slightly disappointed from our defeat at the hands of AFC Liverpool on Tuesday. After 65 minutes we were holding our own and looking to go on and win the game. What happened in the next 5 minutes leaves me with a bitter taste! We contrived to concede 3 goals, all of them completely preventable, which totally killed the game. Although the circumstances in which we lost the game were disappointing, I was pleased with the effort of the players. They are working hard and running themselves into the ground trying to get the results we want. I have been pleased with the performances of some individuals and there is no doubt losing Mark Rogers before kick-off on Tuesday was a blow as he’s been excellent and really drives us forward. In addition I think Michael Simcock at left back has made a really positive start to the season. He is getting fitter with every game and I expect him to continue to get better and better.

week which will be a big boost. I am also looking to strengthen the squad in a couple of areas and am hopeful of some new arrivals in the near future. Today’s game gives the lads an opportunity to kick start our season, they have to raise their games to the level of Rogers and Simcock which will give us the best chance of being successful this season. I’m looking for players to stand up and contribute to the team by either creating, scoring or preventing goals. We will continue to work hard on the training ground to amend the last couple of results. Enjoy the game and thanks for the support!

Setts

We have a tough run of games in the next 3 or 4 weeks and we will need everybody to play their part. We do have competition for places in our squad of around 22 and Richmond Botchey and Sam Dee will be returning to training this

1874 Northwich 3 West 0 ‌match report West's road to Wembley ended at the first hurdle as they succumbed to 1874 Northwich at Winsford's Barton Stadium on a night that was ultimately overshadowed by a serious injury to Ben Steer. Steve Settle named arguably his strongest starting line up to date as Scott Mason returned for his first appearance of the season and Mark Rogers returned in the back line. On the bench there was a return for physio/goalkeeper Donncha Murphy. West began the game brightly and created the games first chance on 4 minutes when Jamie Wolden raced through the middle of the goal, he fed Lee Gavin but he could only fire his effort straight at the keeper from 18 yards out. West slightly edged the first 15 minutes as they pressed high up the field with 1874 struggling to get out of their half. 1874 remained dangerous though and forced several corners heading wide at the near post for the first and forcing Paul Hughes into his first save with the second. On 31 minutes they had the lead as they won another corner on the right, the ball was swung in to the far post, Chappell's header was initially blocked brilliantly on the line by Matt Eckersley but Chappell made no mistake with the rebound and smashed it beyond the West defender. West almost responded immediately as ball over the top found Steer who raced through but was stopped by the linesman's flag despite seemingly to be a yard on. From the offside 1874 immediately went on the offensive forcing Hughes into a brilliant save with his feet from a deflected shot despite being unsighted. If the first goal had been a little harsh on West they didn't learn their lesson for the second as 1874 won another corner which again was swung in to the far post and Chappell was again on hand to head home to make it 2-0 with 9 minutes still remaining to half time. Again West might have responded immediately as Mason raced down the right hand side, cut inside found Wolden with his pass but the ball hit a huge bobble and he shanked it wide to leave the home side with a two goal lead at the half.

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

West began the second half with a change as Ashley Woods replaced Eckerlsey as Settle changed the shape in an attempt to chase the game. Buoyed by the two goals in the first half 1874 grew in confidence enjoying several long range efforts. At the other end Ben Steer had a great chance, a superb ball through released him but he took a touch and a great tackle prevented a certain goal. 1874 continued to create chances as West conceded a soft free kick, the pass went to the right and unmarked with an open goal at his mercy Michael Brandon headed wide. West had a great chance as Gleave turned his man inside out and fired a low shot at the near post but it struck the outside of the post and bounced out. Again another through ball released Steer over the top but a world class tackle prevented him scoring and forced a West corner. From the corner Conkie failed to collect it and Steer was flattened in the scramble with both players down injured. Having made all three subs West would be forced to continue with 10 men as the referee ordered Steer to leave the field. 40 minutes after the final whistle Steer would finally leave the field of play via an ambulance as he suffered a hip injury. Insult followed injury for West as, the referee somehow found five minutes of added on time, Hughes blocked a one-on-one from Jamie Ward, the rebound fell to Ward who clearly hand-balled it, rounded the goalkeeper and tapped it in. Ultimately it didn't effect the result but it was harsh on the players who fought to the end.

History of Barnoldswick Town Formed in 1972 and named Barnoldswick United (1972), so called due to being canny Yorkshiremen - had there had been a previous club named Barnoldswick United and they had outstanding debts the new club would have been liable for them. The field started out as a grazing meadow for cattle, after a lot of hard work, it is now the pitch we play on. The club had 2 teams playing in the Craven & District Football League in the early 1990's we joined the East Lancashire Football League again with 2 teams. The 2003/2004 season brought the amalgamation of Barnoldswick United (1972), Barnoldswick Park Rovers and Salterforth Juniors and we changed our name to Barnoldswick Town Football Club. We then ran 3 senior teams. In the late 1990's our 1st and 2nd teams joined The West Lancashire Football League, our 3rds staying in The East Lancashire Football League. It has always been in the club's constitution to get our ground up to the minimum standards of The North West Counties Football League and the 2009/2010 season saw us accepted into The North West Counties Football League, for our 1st and 2nd teams. We have 2 pitches one being floodlit plus a floodlit training pitch. Our club house can hold up to 120 people and can be hired out for functions. Our main sponsor is Silentnight Beds Ltd and the ground is named The Silentnight Beds Stadium. For the 2013/2014 season we will have 12 junior teams, 3 entering the East Lancashire Alliance and the remaining 9 in the North Valley League. In 2009/2010 our first season in The NWCFL saw us finish Runners up in Division 1 and finalists in the prestigious West Riding County Cup beating Guiseley who won promotion to the Conference North along the way. It was an interesting season as we only expected to hold our own and try to make sure we didn’t end up at the bottom of the league. Following on from our success in the 2009/10 season we went from just looking to avoid relegation in the Premier Division 2010/11 to astound ourselves by finishing a creditable 7th in the league, only suspensions and injuries we feel robbed us of a top three spot. The 2012/2013 season saw us finish 9th in the Premier Division and reaching a round further in The FA Vase. Our Reserves finishing 4th in their

respective league, with players being selected for the first team squad showing we have strength and depth in the club. In March 2012 we achieved The FA Grade E. enabling the club to enter The Evostick League when finishing in a promotion position. The 2013/14 season was a little bit traumatic for the club, players leaving or not being available, unrest in the dressing room which led to poor performances on the field. The club parted with manager Paul Fildes replacing him with the current managerial team of Stewart Airdrie and James Gill. Off the field proved challenging as finances started to run a little low and it was a worry that the club may have to pull out of the NWCFL. However a rescue package was decided upon and Anne Wolfenden has come in and her business expertise is hopefully putting the club back on track. In June of 2014 we achieved Charter Standard Development Club at both Senior and Junior level, which was an excellent achievement by both Senior & Junior Committees. The season ended on a knife edge, if results on the last day of the season had gone a different way we would have been relegated! Looking forward to the new season, new players have been signed and it is hopeful that last season’s relegation battle will not be repeated! Meeting our Match Sponsor…Dave Cooper We are very grateful to Dave for sponsoring todays’s match against Barnoldswick Town. Dave is a West man through and through; he joined West Didsbury, as it was then called, in late 1979 just after his 29 th birthday. Dave got his big chance as a substitute for the second team at Christie’s playing field. Fortunately the left back was injured and Dave took his place and made it his own. Later that season, he broke into the first team. The next season, West took on a new first team manager who had played with Dave in the past and as a consequence his games for the first team were few and far between. So for most of the next ten seasons, Dave played left back for the seconds. However, players were short one weekend and the second team manager pushed Dave into midfield, on his birthday no less, and he scored two magnificent goals. The second team manager was a certain R.Turley and apparently he doesn’t like people outscoring him so Dave was back to left back the next game. Dave won second team player of the year award. It was presented to him by a new Manchester Utd manager; A. Ferguson. One of the highlights of Dave’s career was winning the Clubman of the year and having it presented by Bobby Charlton at Old Trafford. Dave left the club in 1999 after it had relocated and established itself at Brookburn Road but after a few years watching Burnley, decided to return to the now called ‘West Didsbury and Chorlton AFC’ and help out on committee. However, Dave would like to thank all the friends he has made at West for all the enjoyable times he has had with them mainly on Saturday afternoon.

Thank you to Tuesday night’s match sponsor We are very grateful to James Duxford who is one of our keenest supporters for sponsoring the AFC Liverpool game on Tuesday night.

Welcome to Today’s Mascot…William Maguire William Maguire is visiting Didsbury for the summer from Ottawa Canada, with his Mum, little brother Ben, and Dad, who is completing a secondment with the Information Commissioner’s Office in Wilmslow. At home, Will plays for the Ottawa Internationals FC and cheers for his local football club, the Ottawa Fury. While here, he’s keeping up his skills playing at Little Sports Coaching in Wilmslow, where he recently won Player of the Week honours! His new favourite English football team is, as you would expect, West Didsbury & Chorlton AFC! We hope you have a great day with us William.

West 0 AFC Liverpool 3 ‌ match report AFC Liverpool made it three wins in three seasons at Brookburn Road as an eight minute flurry saw them run out 3-0 winners. The two sides enjoyed very different FA Cup experiences as West went out 3-0 to 1874 Northwich on Friday night whilst AFC Liverpool blitzed past Chadderton 9-2 away. However, with West making two changes from Friday night as Dan Russell and Ashley Woods were handed their first starts in place of Jamie Wolden and the injured Ben Steer, they started the brighter of the two teams in an even first half. The first chance fell to West as they won a free kick at the edge of the Liverpool penalty area as Scott Mason's curled effort landed on the roof of the net. Next the impressive Rick Gleave forced the first save of the game as he cut inside and fired a low effort from 18 yards out forcing the Liverpool goalkeeper into a decent save. At the other end a confident Liverpool side fired a long range effort wide from 25 yards. They were also a danger from set pieces as a Liverpool free kick, was knocked down by Allen Weston who did well to chest it down, turn and shoot but his hard volley flew over the bar. West continued to create half chances as Woods forced a good save from the keeper, driving a shot low and across him before then firing over after a good through ball from Gleave. The half's controversial moment came as Michael Simcock and Michael Williams challenged for an aerial ball in front of the dugout. The two came together in mid air with Simcock having a foot in height advantage winning the ball cleanly but the Liverpool full back coming off the worse as he collided with the West full backs chest. The referee gave the visitors a throw in with the Liverpool players surrounding the referee demanding a card whilst the Liverpool manager Paul Moore marched down the touchline to protest. Just before half time Liverpool had a goal disallowed as a brilliantly low whipped in cross found Ryan Cox inside the six yard box, he took a brilliant touch and finished into the bottom right hand corner but the flag was up for offside. At half time the Liverpool manager continued to vent his frustration with the match

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

official's as he followed them into their dressing room. Liverpool started the second half as they had finished the first half as the they created a superb chance when a cross found Mukar Mahama at the far post, his looped header over the goalkeeper forced a brilliant fingertip save onto the roof of the net. The turning point of the game came on the hour mark as the linesman finally lost patience with the AFC Liverpool manager and ordered him from the pitch despite his protestations. However it would have a galvanising effect on his players. On 68 minutes the two teams were finally separated as Matt Eckersley conceded a free kick at the edge of the area as West surrendered possession at the edge of their area. Liverpool's Steve Jones stepped up and curled a brilliant free kick over the wall and it into the top corner. It triggered a flurry of goals as five minutes later a cross into the box saw the ball fall at the feet of Cox who buried it under the helpless Hughes. The damage wasn't done as two minutes later a long range effort deflected off the boot of a West defender into the roof of the net. The assistants flag went up but the referee gave it, correctly, as for the second time in three days involving a side named Liverpool a goal was given where the officials were unsure of the rules. However it didn't affect the result and credit can't be taken away from either Liverpool who took their chances well or the match officials who managed the game well. There was still time for a chance at the other end as Gleave refused to give up and forced another good save from the goalkeeper saving well across his body. Liverpool might have had a fourth when Michael Williams burst down the right and Hughes saved brilliantly at his near post. There was a positive end to the night for West as Tommy Walsh made his first appearance in a West shirt since March 2014 since suffering a fractured cheekbone against Ashton Athletic.

Looking back our new feature on Football History We all know about the exploits of the giants that are Manchester United and Manchester City. Across the country, and even the world, iconic places and people like Old Trafford, Maine Road, Bert Trautman and George Best are regularly spoken of with fondness and reverence. But Manchester has seen a great many more interesting pieces of footballing history. Here, we explore some of the lesser known aspects of Manchester's rich tapestry of football history.

Peter Coyne If you were contracted to one of the best clubs in the world, had caps for England at youth level and interest from other top flight clubs could you imagine giving it all up to become a fishmonger? Well, in the late 1970s one man, by the name of Peter Coyne, almost did that very thing. Coyne's career had started well. After coming through the youth ranks at Manchester United, and representing England as a schoolboy (during which time he scored a hat trick against Germany at Wembley), the forward had been given his chance in the United first team. 2 appearances and 1 goal followed for the young forward, who was by this time emerging as a hot prospect. But things soon soured. Coyne fell out of favour as he struggled to break into the first team. Soon, the young starlet told then United manager Tommy Docherty that he wanted his contract terminated as he wanted to join Ashton United. A player of Coyne's calibre choosing to leave Manchester United to join non-league Ashton United beggars belief. It is almost unfathomable! But then Ashton manager Phil Staley offers a bizarre explanation in his memoir “Get Those Sheep off the Pitch!”. Staley claims; “the chairman offered Peter a van and £200 a week, as long as he played for Ashton United...he wanted to give up full-time football for a more stable career; selling seafood.” I personally cannot quite see that such a job would be so appealing as to lure a young man away from the heady heights of a top level football career. There is something fishy about

the whole thing. (Sorry!) In Get Those Sheep off the Pitch, Staley goes on to recount how the signing was made live in front of TV cameras, with the young footballer's dad desperately trying to talk him out of such a bad move, presumably with the TV producers hoping for a Jeremy Kyle-esque bust up. The forms were successfully signed however and Coyne indeed turned out for Ashton. Big crowds turned out at Hurst Cross to see the coup signing in the flesh, although by all accounts he struggled to make much of an impact in non-league, perhaps struggling with the more physical aspects of the game. There is no information on how his fish selling career progressed. The spell as Ashton United forward/fishmonger was to be short lived. The next year Coyne returned to full time football, joining Crewe Alexandra. He went on to have a rather prolific career turning out for the likes of Los Angeles Aztecs, Hyde United (105 appearances, 51 goals), Swindon Town (110 appearances, 30 goals), Aldershot, Macclesfield, Colne and Glossop North End. Following his retirement from football, Coyne ended up based in the locality, working at Manchester Airport and coaching a junior team in Didsbury. As a note to finish on, I was so baffled as to why Peter Coyne judged fish to be more attractive than top flight football, I did some intensive research on the man and may have found the answer. Media reports at the time state that Coyne “had a leap like a salmon, was a slippery forward, and was capable of putting opposition defences to the sword(fish)”.
