Welcome to AFC Liverpool Good afternoon and welcome to Brookburn Road for today’s Hallmark Security League Premier Division game against AFC Liverpool. We welcome their officials players and supporters and hope they enjoy our hospitality today. Our visitors arrive here today in 9th place one point behind ourselves but with a game in hand. Their early season form gave hope that they could mount a top 4 challenge this season but their recent form, much like ourselves, has been inconsistent with 1 win and 4 defeats from their last 6 games albeit 3 of the defeats were against high flyers Bootle (twice) and Runcorn Linnets. Although this is our first league meeting of the season we have already met each other twice, having played out 2 very close encounters in the Emirates FA Cup at the start of the season. After a goalless draw here at Brookburn Road we managed to progress in the replay by a single goal from Jonny Poizer. Games between the 2 clubs tend to be very competitive and we expect the same today. Sadly our Lancashire Challenge Trophy tie against Padiham on Tuesday had to be postponed shortly before kick off as a car carrying the Padiham Chairman and 2 players was involved in an accident on the M60 near Hyde. We sincerely hope that those involved make a full recovery. Community Bonfire – Thank you Thank you to all who attended our Community bonfire and fireworks display on Saturday, the response was great, and a fantastic evening was had by all. This is a valuable annual fundraiser for the club and we’d also like to thank all those who volunterred in the set up, during the night and the tidy up on Sunday. Car parking at the club We would like to apologise to supporters for the current state of the car parking here at Brookburn Road. Regulars will have noticed that we have lost a substantial amount of pitchside parking due to the renovations taking place at one of the houses adjacent to the ground. Unfortunately the contractors have also driven heavy vehicles on to the car park behind the far goal which has churned up the ground and made it virtually unusable in bad weather. The committee is working to resolve these problems with the ultimate aim being to tarmac the car parks, though this is subject to a planning application. Who’s up next? Today’s game is the third home game scheduled in a week. Although the Padiham game was postponed. The game has now been rescheduled for Tuesday 15th November. We then have our 3rd taste of Friday night football when we visit Abbey Hey on 18 November, before welcoming Runcorn Linnets to Brookburn Road. Tuesday 15th November – Padiham (h) 7.45pm ko Friday 18th November – Abbey Hey (a) 7.45pm ko Saturday 26th November – Runcorn Linnets (h) 7.30pm ko Our Manchester Premier Cup tie against Glossop North End at Glossop has now been arranged for Tuesday 29 November.

Enjoy the game, and a safe journey home to all after the game.

Steve Settle’s Notes Good afternoon everybody and welcome to Brookburn Road for today’s Premier Division fixture against AFC Liverpool. We hope that their officials and supporters have an enjoyable visit to Chorlton today and we wish them well for the rest of the season. Kevin is experiencing a similar situation to us with inconsistent form this season. AFC Liverpool always represents a tough game for us and we know from our games against them in the Cup this afternoon will be no different. Our injury crisis has been well documented in previous notes when I commented on the fact that before our game at Nelson, I was naming a really strong 11 that we had unavailable through suspensions or injuries. Going into that game I was hopeful that at least one of our centre halves would have recovered enough to play. Thankfully Pottsy was just about fit enough to start in what was a very young team. It does however give our younger members of the squad an opportunity to get some valuable experience. Carlos, Georgi, Ben Woods, Rob Black, Ben Steer and Jordan Poole are all still really young and the experience they are getting this year will stand them in good stead for the future. Again we started well with a well placed Jonny Poizer header but then we switched off for 15 minutes and gifted Nelson two very preventable goals, one a penalty as the forward had his back to goal and then getting caught out from a throw in!!! We finished the half really strongly and scored two really good goals via Ash and Pottsy and I fully expected us to go on and win the game comfortably. It’s a funny old game though and again we became too open as the game went end to end. We were worried when Deano looked to have taken a nasty knock but thankfully he was ok and we showed good character to nick an equaliser in injury time.

Given the extent of our injury list and the average age of our team, I was pleased with 4 points from the 2 games. Roll the clock forward to Saturday and we welcomed back Nia to partner Pottsy again, in what promises to be a strong pairing. We were in control of the game going in at half time 2-0 up through a fine glancing header from Carlos and another good strike from Ash, whose all game was rewarded with another man of the match performance. Ashton pulled a goal back but we were quick to create other good chances which weren’t taken. As time was ticking away we saw a surrender not witnessed at Brookburn Road before as we conceded 4 goals in the final 7 minutes! Our current inconsistent form is a concern and we are doing all we can to correct this. The lads are under no illusions that today will be a tough game and we will have to be at our best to get anything from it! There was one highlight on Saturday, the Community Bonfire and Fireworks Display which was a great evening with 700 people at the club enjoying themselves. As always, thanks for the support and enjoy the game!

NWCFL Premier Division – Results (after 5 November)

WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

History of AFC Liverpool AFC Liverpool was formed in 2008, by Liverpool FC fans, who had becoming increasingly frustrated at the cost and difficulty in obtaining tickets for the Premiership. The supposed '39th game' in which Premier League fixtures would be played in different parts of the world proved to be the final straw, highlighting that top flight football is now more concerned about money than its fans. A website was created and, with the response being positive, work began to move to the next stage and create a steering group to make the club a reality. At the beginning of March 2008 AFC Liverpool was officially formed and it was made clear that the club was not in any way a response to the ownership issue at Anfield or a protest against Liverpool Football Club, more a reaction to issues at the top end of football in general. By May, AFC Liverpool had appointed its first manager in Derek Goulding. The following month the club arranged a groundshare with Prescot Cables and had been accepted into the North West Counties Football League. The club's first game was a 1-1 draw in a friendly with St Helens Town on 16th July 2008 and they began their inaugural league season extremely well, beating Darwen 5-0 in their first competitive game and going on a run of ten wins in the first eleven games. However they failed to keep this momentum going, and the club eventually finished fourth in the league. The season did prove fruitful though as a victory in the final of the First Division Trophy over Padiham at Ashton Athletic provided the club's first piece of silverware.

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

2009/10 began with three successive victories but after this the season became very indifferent. After a 5-2 home defeat to Atherton Collieries on Easter Monday, Derek Goulding left the club and ex assistant and goalkeeping coach Paul Moore was appointed caretaker Manager. Under Moore's stewardship AFC had a strong end to the 2009/10 campaign, winning five out of their last seven league games to climb to fifth in the league and also retaining the First Division Trophy, coming from behind to beat Cheadle Town 2-1 in the final at Flixton. In doing so, AFC Liverpool became the first club not only to win the Trophy twice but also successfully defend it. 2010/11 also began in promising fashion with the Reds going on a ten game unbeaten run after an opening day loss at AFC Darwen. However despite amassing their highest ever points total promotion never looked probable due to the form of would be Champions AFC Blackpool and second placed Runcorn Town, resulting in a fourth placed finish, missing out on third by goal difference. There was disappointment too in the First Division Trophy when they reached the final for a third consecutive time only to lose to Atherton Collieries 3-2 in extra time. In the FA Vase, steady progress was made to the third round, where their dreams of Wembley were dashed by a defeat at Whitley Bay, who would go on to claim a third successive triumph. However at the League AGM in July 2011 there was a surprise when Rossendale were expelled from the league and Formby were demoted to the First Division. Holker Old Boys, who finished third on goal difference, declined an invitation to take up a place in the Premier Division, meaning that AFC Liverpool were invited to take the place and the club accepted the chance that was offered to them.

AFC Liverpool History continued The 2011/12 season started badly in terms of results but not performances for AFC Liverpool as they had to wait until November for their first League victory, which came about in the form of a 7-0 demolition of Winsford United. From that point, AFC Liverpool, who had been rooted to the foot of the table, began the steady climb out of danger, ultimately finishing in nineteenth place, sixteen points clear of the relegation places. 2012/13 saw AFC Liverpool consolidate their position in the North West Counties Premier Division with an eleventh placed finish, accumulating sixty points in the process. As the season progressed, manager Paul Moore built a core squad of players, which played some of the most exciting, attractive football in the league and post Christmas, won fifteen and drew five of twenty eight games, including a defeat of eventual Premier Division champions Padiham on their home patch.

The performances were rewarded in the final game of the season as the Reds beat recently crowned champions of the Evo-Stik NPL First Division North, Skelmersdale United, 3-0 in the Liverpool Senior Cup semi final to book an all North West Counties clash with Bootle in the final. Last season the Reds started the campaign at a pace, topping the early tables. They fell just short of being the youngest club to claim the Liverpool Senior Cup, losing the final on penalties, and remained among the league's pacesetters until November and December when six points taken from eight games saw them drop away. Paul Moore's side remained consistent post Christmas though and the club eventually achieved their highest league finish, ending up seventh with a total of seventy points.

History of West…PART 6 – The Thirties The period from 1930 to the outbreak of the Second World War saw the club continue in the top divisions of the league, but without the same success as the first ten years of membership of the Lancashire and Cheshire League.

taking the title and West finished runnersup in Division 1 for the 4th time.

The close rivalry of the Twenties with Royton Amateurs was renewed in the course of the 1930-31 season when the two clubs met no less than five times in premier competition, the three extra meetings resulting from a long drawn out 1st round tie on the Lancashire Amateur Cup.

The second team meanwhile reached the final of the Subsidiary Cup that same year (1932) for the second time only to loose by the odd goal in eleven to Heald Green.

The first tie was played at Royton on 1 November 1930, and by half-time West Didsbury were 3-0 ahead only for the referee to abandon the second half as the pitch was then considered unfit. The replay took place the following Saturday, again at Royton, and just when the match looked to be heading for a draw with the score at 2-2, the crossbar snapped in the 83rd minute and the tie was again abandoned. The second replay at Christies produced the first complete 90 minutes of the tie and West Didsbury progressed to the next round 5-3 winners. The teams finished that season with respectable league positions of 5th and 4th respectively, and whilst the first team improved their performance the following season with only four defeats this was not enough to prevent South Salford from

Indeed this 1931-32 campaign was to be the last occasion when the club gained honours in the premier division.

In an exciting final played at Cheadle Heath, later club President, Norman Priestley, was one of the West Didsbury scorers in the 5-6 result. Norman writes about that game: “The line up then of course was five forwards, three half-backs, two full-backs and a goalkeeper. I was right half whose job it was to mark their inside-left. Nearing the end of the game the score was 5-5 and then this inside-left gathered the ball in midfield and had a great run to score the winning goal. My main memory of the match is of standing well upfield watching his sickening progress to ultimate success. The pang of regret experienced then is still there whenever that match is recalled”.

From the 1920’s to 2017… The development of our Club will continue next season as we plan to run a West Women’s team.

West 2 Ashton Athletic 5 match report…Saturday 5 November Four goals in the last nine minutes saw West collapse to a 5-2 defeat at home to Ashton Athletic.

Matty Kay almost made it 3-0 two minutes into the second half as he attempted to lob the keeper from the edge of the penalty area but his effort just cleared the crossbar.

A bright autumn’s day! It was West who started the quicker of two teams as Rob Black forced an early save from Ashton Athletic goalkeeper Martin Pearson. On 12 minutes a Matty Kay corner was swung in towards Anthony Potts but he couldn’t direct his header on goal. There was an early blow for West as Ben Woods was forced out of the game due to a groin injury; replaced by Steve Brockley. On 23 minutes Black did brilliantly to ghost round defender Brian Hatton into the penalty area, pulling his low cross back to Kay but he couldn’t direct his effort towards goal. West took the lead on 29 minutes when Black did well down the left, his low cross reaching the near post and Carlos Mendes Gomes’ diving header deceived Pearson and rolled into the bottom right hand corner from the near post.

Ashton pulled a goal back on 58 minutes when Stephen Kay headed home at the far post from a corner. Six minutes later Ashton almost levelled from the same move but this time it was headed over. West responded and Mendes Gomes had an effort superbly blocked after a lay off from Ash Woods. The games turning point came on 68 minutes when Mendes Gomes released Kay one-onone with a superb through ball however Kay tried to round the keeper but Pearson blocked brilliantly before Ash Woods fired the loose ball round the post. Ashton grew into the game and had an effort cleared off the line from a corner on 68 minutes. Ashton levelled on 82 minutes following a lay off at the edge of the area allowing Matty Reid to drill into the bottom corner.

West stepped up a gear as Mendes Gomes almost made it 2-0 as he beat the offside trap but rolled his shot wide of the post. West pressed for a second as Jordan Poole had a goal bound effort blocked from 25 yards out before Kay had a header flicked just wide of the post from an Ash Woods cross.

Two minutes later Ashton took the lead when Adam Gilchrist’s looping header from a loose ball beat Botchey inside the left hand post. West almost levelled immediately as Ash Woods drove down the right hand side, pulled his pass back to substitute Saul Henderson who pulled his shot just wide of the post.

West doubled their lead in first half stoppage time as Ash Woods burst down the right hand side and fired his effort past Pearson inside the near post to give West a deserved half 2-0 lead.

A minute later Ashton doubled their lead as Gilchrist added their fourth drilling it into the bottom corner before completing his hat-trick in stoppage time firing past Williams one-on one to hand Ashton all three points.
