Welcome to Irlam FC A warm welcome to Brookburn Road for tonight’s Hallmark Securities Premier Division game against Irlam FC. We welcome the officials, players and supporters of Irlam and hope you enjoy our hospitality tonight. This is our second experiment with Friday night football and after the huge success of the previous game against Maine Road last season, which drew a crowd of over 400, we are obviously hoping for a similar response tonight, although hopefully a different outcome on the field. The reverse fixture at Silver Street last month, also on a Friday night, drew Irlam’s biggest crowd of the season and resulted in arguably our best performance of the season, so we will no doubt find a fired up Irlam side tonight out to reverse that result and we will need to be on our guard. They have made a solid start to their return to the Premier league and sit in 11th place with only 3 defeats from their 12 games. Our last match On Tuesday we suffered another disappointing defeat against Squires Gate in a game which uncannily saw a repeat of the scoreline in our Emirates FA Cup tie against the same opponents in August. Once again we gave away 2 poor goals in the 1st half, got back in the game to equalise in the 2nd half only to immediately concede the winner. New signing We are delighted to announce the signing of centre half Nia Bayunu who made his debut on Tuesday and has joined us from Ramsbottom. Since the loss of Matt Eckersley and the injury to Mark Rogers we have been looking to strengthen in this position and in Nia we have a quality defender with huge experience of the Northern Premier league and higher and we welcome him to the club. With our upcoming schedule featuring games against 1874 Northwich and Atherton Collieries, 2 of the favourites for the league, we are delighted to have Nia on board. Volunteering with the club As we continue to compete at the top end of the NWCFL, at the same time as offering football opportunities from Under 6’s to Adults the pressure on our volunteers continues to grow. As such, if you are regular at the Matches or live locally and have a couple of hours to spare to help the club to continue to progress, please have a word with anyone behind the bar. Who’s up next? Tuesday 11th October – Ashton Athletic (a) 7.45pm ko Saturday 15th October – 1874 Northwich (h) 3.00pm ko Tuesday 18th October – Atherton Collieries (h) 7.45pm ko

Enjoy the game, and a safe journey home to all after the game. WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

Steve Settle’s Notes Good evening and welcome to 'Friday Night Lights'. Tonight we host our friends from Irlam in the North West counties league game and following today's game we wish them well for the season. Of course we played Irlam fairly recently early in September and in the end ran out comfortable winners in front of a healthy Friday night crowd. Since that game however we have struggled for consistency in both performances and results whilst Irlam have enjoyed successive wins in the FA vase alongside side draws against title favourites Atherton and Northwich. Based on this tonight's game will be a tough one and we will have to make sure we are at our best in order to get the result we want. Following our disappointing defeat in the FA Vase and the League Cup we hosted Squires Gate on Tuesday night hoping to build on a promising start to the League campaign. Unfortunately and bizarrely the game followed the same pattern of our previous meeting earlier on in the season. Namely us gifting them two goals before battling back to get ourselves into the game only to be caught on the break with a sucker punch. I couldn't fault the effort from the lads but if we want to be successful this year we need to cut out silly individual errors that keep costing us goals. If the lads don't already know it the disappointment is a testament to how far we've come as a group. Whilst we can't legislate for individual errors we were by far the better team based on chances created and it was unfortunate that we didn't get the result our efforts deserved. Perhaps previously I would've been an acceptance of the result but following the game I could see that the lads were hurt and we are all desperate to put that right tonight! Taking positives out of the game I thought young Carlos added a spark which is obviously

pleasing when we consider his age. He is still very young and we will look after him properly but he is an exciting prospect! In addition to this it was great to get Nia on the pitch and I was delighted by his debut. He adds a great deal of experience and leadership to the group and is in excellent example for some of the younger lads in the dressing room. I can remember Nia coming to Leigh as a raw 18year-old and his attitude to the game at such a young age suggested to me that he would have future in the game. Since then he has tasted considerable success as an individual and as part of Traffords promotion winning sides! It was obviously pleasing that Nia capped his debut with a goal and I thought his all round contribution was excellent! I'm sure you'll all join me in welcoming nia to the club and I'm even more certain you'll enjoy watching him play!! On the injury front we are still without long-term absentees Mark Rogers, Gary Lillie and Michael Simcock. I'm hopeful that Matty Kay, Scott Mason and Richmond Botchey will be available for tonight's game after shaking off hamstring, ankle and back injuries respectively! As always thank you for your support and hope you enjoy the game. Clear eyes full hearts...

NWCFL Premier Division – Results (after 1 October)

WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

History of IRLAM FC This particular section of Mitchell Shackleton Football Club was founded in October 1969 by a group of employees working for Mitchell, Shackleton and Company Limited, a well established engineering company based in Patricroft, Eccles, which manufactured marine and diesel crankshafts. The founding members of Mitchell Shackleton Football Club were Bob Cowlishaw (Chairman), Bill Russell (Secretary) and Charlie Flynn (Treasurer, who served the Club also served as Secretary with distinction from 1981 until his death in 1994). They were ably supported by a Committee comprising of Alf Johnson (now Club President), Ged Moore (Kit Manager) and Stan Catlin (Team Manager). Although the Cub has been in existence for over 30 years, Mitchell Shackleton FC can trace teams playing under the Company's banner as far back as 1935. Initially, the Football Club was financially supported through the Company's active Sports and Social Club, however the recession of the late 1970's led to the Company restructuring it's business interests, and unfortunately a reduction in the workforce. These events inevitably led to the dissolution of the Sports and Social Club, and a splintering of the various sporting sections with each individual group becoming self-financing. The Football Section based its headquarters at the Oddfellows Arms, Patricroft, before moving to St Michael’s Community Centre, Peel Green in 1973, which was to become the Club's permanent base for the next 29 years. Mitchell Shackleton FC entered the Eccles and District Amateur Football League in 1970 where the Club established itself without winning any major honours. After a two-year association with the Eccles League, the Club sought pastures new by joining the Manchester Amateur League in season 1972-73. It was in the Manchester Amateur League that the Club's reputation began to grow, winning the Third Division (1973-74) and Second Division (1974-75) Championships in successive seasons, and in 1975 a reserve team was formed. Between 1976 and 1978, the Club went through a transitional phase with younger players being introduced to the first team, and the formation of a new management team of George Walker, Billy Hall and Jimmy Preston.

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

During this period, a re-structuring of the League saw Mitchells competing in the Industrial 'B' Division, in which the Club were runners-up in 1979-80. In season 1983-84, Mitchells finished Industrial 'A' Division runners-up, but ended the season on a high by winning the Gosling Cup. Industrial 'A' Division runners-up once again in season 1985-86, and defeated finalists in the Gosling Cup of 1988-89 signalled the end of the Club's 17 year association with the Manchester Amateur League with Mitchells again looking for a new challenge by joining the Manchester League in 1989. Mitchells quickly found their feet and gained promotion to the Premier Division at the second attempt, finishing as First Division runners-up in 1991. A change of management saw Paul Traynor and Kenny Davies take on the first team responsibilities, with George Walker and Ron Parker managing the reserves. In 1993, Mitchells reached the Gilchrist Cup Final, only to lose out to Woodley Sports in the Final. 1994 saw the formation of a third team which was entered into the Eccles and District League, and in the same year, Paul Traynor departed due to work commitments and Kenny Davies assumed control, ably assisted by Billy Hall. This management team took Mitchells to their highest ever league position in the Premier Division, runners-up to Abbey Hey in 1995. The Club was rocked prior to the commencement of 1997-98 season when Kenny Davies walked out, taking with him several first team players to local rivals Monton Amateurs. Dave Rowan and Craig Woodley, who had forged a successful partnership with the reserves, were promoted and asked to rebuild the side. Roy Bluer, a successful manager in Sunday football, was recruited to run the reserves. By the end of December 1997, the first team were rock bottom of the Premier Division with two points, and were twelve points adrift and facing certain relegation. However, the Club kept faith with its management team and a run of six wins, three draws and only two defeats saw Mitchells catch the side above them. Losses in the next two games saw Mitchells drop into the bottom two, but a dramatic win against fellow strugglers Wythenshawe Town and mid-table Monton Amateurs saw the Club stave of relegation. The experience was too close and the team have not been out of the top six since, finishing fifth in 1998-99, third in 1999-2000 and fourth in 2000-01.

History of Irlam FC continued‌ It also saw the departure of Craig Woodley and the formation of a new management team of Rowan, former Willows boss Gary Fellows, and team coach Dave Mann, who have rebuilt the squad and introduced several young prospects. League form fell short of early expectations, but the team did put together a good Gilchrist Cup run to reach the Semi-Finals. Mitchell Shackleton were proud winners of the Albert Booth Sportsmanship Trophy in 1998-99, a testament to the spirit in which the Club plays the game. Also, in June 2000, Club Secretary Ian Street was named Secretary of the Year at the Annual General Meeting. A major change at the Club occurred in 2002 when Mitchells were informed that Salteye Park, their existing ground at Barton was to be purchased and subsequently used for what has now to become the new Salford Reds rugby League stadium. The hunt was on for a new ground, and with compensation from their move, plus football foundation assistance, Silver St in Irlam, once home to Irlam Town became an obvious choice. The start of the 2001-02 season saw the Club change its title to Irlam MS in anticipation of a proposed move to Silver St, the site of the then defunct Irlam Town FC. The new ground at Silver St was officially opened in 2003 with a visit from Brian McClair's Milk Cup winning, Manchester United youth team. A further name change saw Irlam MS become Irlam FC, and the appointment of Warren Dodd as secretary of the Club, from Irlam Rangers Junior Club saw development increase at the ground. The Club made the decision in 2006 that they would pursue a place in The North West Counties League, and entry via ground improvements at Silver St meant that the Club entered their highest level of competition in their history in readiness for the 2008/2009 season. That inaugural season, under the guidance of manager Dave Mann remains our best season to date in the competition, finishing in 8th position on 52 points. The Clubs performances to date have fluctuated in the NWCFL as the Club adjusts to the higher

level of competition. Previous managers Dave Mann, Ryan Gilligan and Nick Parker have all poured their effort and commitment into the Club, culminating in the most recent appointment, Steve Nixon, a local manager with an impeccable coaching CV. Seasons 2013/2014 and 2014/15 were a learning curve for the new management team as the season presented plenty of positives from probably the youngest squad in the league. A large pool of players competing in the North West Counties, a reserve team in the Cheshire League and U18s in the North West Youth Alliance league really put the accent on youth at the Club. Notable highlights for the 1st team in 2014/2015 was a semi final appearance in the Manchester FA Premier Cup against Mossley FC, along with a mid-table finish in Div One. The Reserves had a season of success in season 2013/2014, finishing 4th in the Res Division as well as winning the Reserve Div Trophy against Glossop as well as runners up in the Reserve Div Cup final against Darwen. With manager Steve Nixon at the helm for his 3rd campaign for the 2015/2016 season, the future is looking bright both on and off the pitch at Silver St. The opening of a brand new Clubhouse at the ground again pushed the Club to greater heights, creating a real non-league footballing set up at Silver St. Season 2015/16 season proved to be a watershed moment for the Club. Since joining the league in 2008/2009 the focus has been on youth and development of the ground, and it was 2015/2016 season when all the efforts and sacrifices made came to fruition. Irlam manager Steve Nixon shaped a fantastic group of maturing young players as they put together a magnificent run of results to take second spot and gain automatic promotion to the Premier Division for the first time in their history. All at the Club look forward to an exciting new season ahead, and the many twists and turns it will surely take. The Clubs U21s tasted great success in the Cheshire Premier League, winning the title after a season long battle with Southport Club, the seaside Club gaining a measure of revenge as the defeated Irlam 2-1 in the League Cup final.

Around the league…from last Saturday’s games… with Ian Templeman Bears mean goals If you are looking for goalscoring action at the moment, then any game involving Congleton Town has to be on the hit list. Saturday’s 4-3 defeat to Prestwich Heys in the Macron Cup continued an amazing run of goalscoring games involving the Bears that extends back seven games. There have been a total of 26 goals in their last three games, and since the start of September, only one game out of the seven they have played has had less than five goals – and there were four in that one. Road draw a blank On these pages last week, we drew attention to Maine Road’s goalscoring record, stating that as at last Monday morning they had scored in every game and only scored less than two goals in three of their games. As if to just underline that statistc, Road promptly went out on Monday night and scored five against Bootle, so it was “hold the front page” news on Saturday at 5 pm when it emerged that they had lost 1-0 at Atherton Collieries. It was always going to be a tough test at high flying Colls, who have the second meanest defence in the Premier Division, so it’s fair to assume that the Road goalscoring machine will soon be back producing net busters again. Reds on form One team quietly going about their business at the moment are AFC Liverpool, whose 4-1

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

victory over Cammell Laird 1907 on Friday night was their fifth win in six games. The Reds are tucked in nicely among the promotion contenders, six points behind league leaders 1874 Northwich and having two games in hand, and with some impressive goalscoring firepower in their ranks, are likely to pose a threat to anyone with Premier Division promotion aspirations. Away days agree with Charnock Richard Charnock Richard’s amazing away form continued with their 5-1 win at Ashton Town on Saturday, their third win on the road in the space of a week. Out of ten away games played this season, Charnock have won nine and drawn one, and the victories have been achieved at some of the furthest flung places they will visit this season, including Eccleshall, Whitchurch, Harrogate, Whickham and Holker Old Boys. There’s an old saying that there is no place like home, but travelling far and beyond the confines of rural Lancashire doesn’t seem to worry Andy Westwell’s men. Towey form good news for Joey As new Widnes manager Joey Dunn starts to shape his squad for a promotion challenge, he will have been heartened by the recent good form of striker Kevin Towey. Saturday’s hat trick against Alsager Town took Kevin’s goal tally to seven in the space of two weeks, and with the pair having successfully worked together at Runcorn Linnets, the partnership looks likely to be equally as fruitful a few miles down the road at the Select Security Stadium.

FA Youth Cup West 2 Irlam 9 match report…Weds 5 Oct. On Wednesday night West and Irlam FC clashed in the FA Youth Cup. Irlam started the game the livelier team having more of the possession which paid off as they took advantage and reacted quickly to a lack of communication in the West penalty area, but the shot was saved in the first chance of the game. Irlam continued to dominate possession and had a number of other shots saved within the first 10 minutes, the deadlock was broken in the 19th minute as number 10 Culf, scored for Irlam to make it 1-0. West looked like they were getting back into the game with a couple of shots and free kicks, Mendes Gomes having a great effort in the 37th minute but the Irlam keeper made a spectacular save to deny West from scoring the equaliser. In the 40th minute there was a coming together of players which saw number 6, Mendes Gomes, sent off for West. This turned out to be the downfall for West as only two minutes later Irlam doubled their lead which saw number 7 for Irlam Pollitt, chip the keeper who was off his line. Going in at half time the score was West 0 – 2 Irlam. In the 49th Pollitt, scored his second goal of the game, Irlam’s third, to make it 3-0, as he slotted the ball in from a cross that came in from the right hand side.

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

However, in the 53rd minute West got one back as their number 7, Olaluyi, scored from a few yards’ out. Not long after that in the 58th minute Irlam got their fourth as their number 11, Share, got down the line to put a chance on a plate for number 10, Culf, to slot home. It went from bad to worse for the home side, in the 66th minute number 5 for West, Egan, scored an own goal as a cross was played in from the right hand side which the defender could only hit past his own keeper. Just two minutes later number 12 for Irlam, sub Josh Main-Quinn scored to make it 6-1 as he blasted a shot into the bottom corner and in quick succession Irlam scored another in the 72nd minute as number 7, Pollitt, hits a 30 plus yarder in, this the result of the West keeper being off his line following a poor clearance. A great way for Pollitt to get his hat trick! In the 83rd minute, West pulled another goal back as number 4, McDermott, slotted in from close range, but unfortunately this was only a consolation goal for the home side. Irlam retaliated by scoring their ninth of the game just two minutes later and it’s the sub number 12 yet again. The final score was: West 2 – 9 Irlam. We wish Irlam good luck in the next round.

West 2 Squires Gate 3 match report…Tuesday 4 October West slumped to consecutive defeats for the first time this season as they lost at home to Squires Gate for a second time. Manager Steve Settle was able to welcome back Rick Gleave into the squad whilst handing a debut to defender Nia Bayunu in defence and was boosted by the return of Lee Gavin in midfield. However there was no place for Matty Kay, Richmond Botchey and Rob Black who all missed out through injury. West had faced Squires Gate back in August where they fell behind to a goal after 10 seconds and almost did again as they conceded a free kick from the edge of the area with the resultant kick flashing wide of the post. The reprieve was longer this time as Squires Gate took an 11th minute lead when a long punt up field fell to Captain Anthony Potts but the West defender under-hit his header back towards goal allowing Brett Dawson to sneak in ahead of goalkeeper Dean Williams and slot into the bottom corner. In the swirling wind the game failed to find any rhythm with the visitors content to punt the ball long up the middle and chase whilst West’s football, although prettier on the eye, failed to break Squires Gate down. It took until 28 minutes to fashion a decent effort on goal as some superb one touch passing open up space for Joe Shaw but his shot was deflected over from the edge of the area. As in August, the visitors were content to disrupt the flow of the game and three additional minutes were added at the end of the first half. It was in the second of

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

these minutes that Squires Gate doubled their lead as West were found guilty of overplaying in front of their own penalty area as Bayunu’s clearance was blocked into the path of James Gibson and the striker powered his effort past Williams to stun the ground into silence. A big reaction was demanded from the players by Setts at half time and he got on 56 minutes when Nia Bayunu powered home a header at the near post after Ben Steer’s long throw in. Two minutes later West were level as a cross from the right was flicked on into the path of Gleave who slotted his first time effort into the bottom right hand corner 6 yards out. In August, West battled back from two goals down only to immediate concede again and it was a sense of déjà vu on 64 minutes when Tanser’s cross was converted home on the goal-line by Ben Seear; their third attempt on goal. West went in search of a third of their own as Ash Woods did well on the right taking on his man, his initial cross was handled but dropped kindly into the path of Gleave whose thunderous effort forced a superb save from the visiting goalkeeper. West rang the chances as Jonny Poizer volleyed just over on the half turn. West continued to increase their pressure on the game but were increasingly hampered by the visiting side’s time wasting as on more than one occasion the game was stopped due to a Gate player clutching his face. West piled on the pressure late on with Gleave volleying just over after another good move but couldn’t find a leveller that their second half play deserved.
