Welcome to 1874 Northwich A warm welcome to Brookburn Road for today’s Hallmark Securities Premier Division game against 1874 Northwich, we welcome their officials, players and supporters and hope you enjoy our hospitality today. 1874 are perennial challengers at the top of the league and this season is no exception. Ian Street has once again assembled a strong squad and it is no surprise that they come here today in 1st place in the league so we are under no illusion how difficult today’s game will be. Last Fridays night’s encounter with Irlam drew a great attendance of 260 but saw more frustration on the field with an injury time defeat to our local rivals. It was always going to be a testing evening against an opponent still smarting from our 6-0 victory at their ground last month and so it proved. In a game of few clear chances we took a second half lead through Ash Woods and looked good to complete the win but Irlam got back into the game via a mystifying penalty decision where there appeared to be no obvious foul and no appeal by any player. We then disappointingly conceded in injury time for our second home defeat in four days. To make matters worse we have added two more players to our ever lengthening long term injury list. During the Irlam game Lee Gavin suffered a dislocated shoulder and will be out of action for at least 10 weeks and Scott Mason suffered a broken nose which may require surgery. That makes it five players now out with long term injuries. We must have run over several black cats and it is really testing our strength in depth. The positive side is that it gives our youngsters a chance to show what they can do at this level and the experience they are gaining should stand them and the club in good stead going forward . So it was that on Tuesday we travelled to Ashton Athletic with Joe Shaw and Nia Bayunu also missing. We were therefore delighted to come away with a fine 3-2 win courtesy of goals by Jonny Poizer and Rob Black(2).

League Correspondence Finally we have had correspondence from the league committee who have raised a couple of points following a recent visit. Firstly, at one point they noticed a dog inside the perimeter fence. Although the dog was correctly on a lead they have pointed out that all dogs must remain outside the fence at all times so we ask for your cooperation in this matter. Secondly they were concerned that young children were going on to the pitch at halftime and playing in the goalmouths. They raised Health and Safety concerns and have asked that we stop this happening in future. We must therefore insist that the pitch remains clear at half time and we ask parents cooperation in enforcing this.

Who’s up next? Our next home game is on Tuesday evening and it doesn’t get any easier with the visit of our friends from Atherton Collieries, who were top of the league on goal difference after Wednesdays night’s fixtures. Tuesday 18th October – Atherton Collieries (h) 7.45pm ko Wednesday 26th October – Runcorn Town (a) 7.45pm ko Saturday 29th October – AFC Darwen (h) 3.00pm ko

Enjoy the game, and a safe journey home to all after the game. WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

Steve Settle’s Notes Good afternoon and welcome to today's Northwest counties league fixture against 1874 Northwich. The game against Northwich is always an entertaining one and I'm sure today will be no different. We would like to wish Ian and his team, the committee and the supporters of Northwich a warm welcome and after today's game we wish them well for the season. I have known Ian for a long time and whilst we will be doing everything to beat them today it is pleasing to see him doing well. Following our defeat at Northwich a little more than a month ago, a game in which we were under par, we know how tough today's game will be. Northwich are a team packed full of experienced players and it is no surprise that they find themselves in the top two. As such we will need all 16 players to contribute today if called upon if we are going to be successful. Steve, Rob, Brocks and I have been a little frustrated with the performances of late. Our in different form has been a result of us conceding some silly goals characterised by individual errors that mean the players nor the management team can account for. That being said you don't become a bad team overnight and it's important that the lads continue to believe in what we are doing. Our challenge as a management team is to make sure the boys continue to trust in their ability individually and collectively in order to get back to playing the attacking front foot football but allowed us to start the season so well. Every team will have a blip at some point in the season, we just have to make sure that this has been ours and we kick on from here!! Following Friday nights disappointing narrow defeat at home to Irlam it was important to pick up an away win at Ashton on Tuesday. With our massive injury list, indeed I read out a full team of unavailable players, some of the lads who have had to be patient got a chance to

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

impress. In the first half I thought we were very solid and scored a great goal through Johnny Pozier getting on the end of a great Ben Woods through ball with some clever movement and he provided a confident finish! I was particularly pleased for JP because he has had to bide his time and he's done so in a professional manner! In the 2nd half Rob Black provided 2 goals to ensure that we nicked it by the odd goal in 5! Injuries are starting to become very frustrating for us!! Added to long-term injury absentees Mark Rogers, Michael Simcock and Gaz Lilley I'm disappointed to report that Lee Gavin dislocated his shoulder and will be out for some time, Scott Mason broke his nose and requires an operation and Matty Kay has suffered a cheek injury in an accident at work! Fingers crossed we will get Joe Shaw and Nia on the pitch this weekend which should add some experience for what promises to be a tough couple of games against the league’s top 2!! As always thank you for your support and hope you enjoy the game.

History of 1874 Northwich 1874 Northwich: The story so far.... We are absolutely certain that supporters of each and every football club believe that, in some way, their club is, special and unique. And yes, this is probably the case. After all, the giants of Real Madrid can boast that they have won more European Cups than any other club. Likewise, Notts County can hark back to a history that started a full 40 years before the boys from the Bernebau were even formed. So, you might ask, what is the USP and distinguishing point of 1874 Northwich? Well, we might argue that there are several. The first is that we are actually one of the youngest clubs in England! Indeed the club was formed as recently as November 2012 when disillusioned members of the then Northwich Victoria Supporters Trust voted overwhelmingly to form a new fans-run and democratically operated club. The second is that, as far as we can ascertain, we are the only club in Europe to be prefixed by numbers ahead of our name. Thirdly, 1874 is one of an increasing number of clubs – such as FC United of Manchester, Wycombe Wanderers and Portsmouth - whom are owned and operated by their supporters. So, as we hope you now realise, 1874 is a little bit different than many other clubs.... The decision to break away from the club that the fans had followed and supported for many years was heartbreaking. But in the end, numerous off the field sagas and financial controversies – which culminated in the loss of the hugely impressive Victoria Stadium – eventually lead the majority to decide that they could no longer identify themselves with the club that they had once loved and that something radical had to be done. In keeping with its democratic structure, the name and colours of the new club were decided upon by the members and are a conscious reference to the once proud heritage of the club that followers of 1874 used to follow. The months immediately after the decision to create a new club proved to be very busy as everyone

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

worked hard to convince a number of key organisations that the club was a viable proposition and could successfully operate in the National Leagues System. In March of 2013 a two-year ground-share deal was brokered with neighbours Winsford United - an agreement that has been subsequently extended to cover the period up to 2018. During the same week, the former Warrington, Winsford and Ashton Athletic boss Ian Street agreed to become 1874’s first manager. A few weeks later, following an hour-long interview by the FA at St George’s Park, the news came through that 1874’s application to join the First Division of the North West Counties League had been accepted and at last we were a bona-fide football club! The next major landmark came on the evening of Wednesday 10 July 2013 when 1874 played their first ever game against local side Lostock Gralam. If anyone had any doubts regarding the viability of the new club, these were shattered when on that warm and balmy July evening as just short of 400 fans - the majority of who proudly sported the kit and colours of the new club - turned out to see the start of something different, something new and, most importantly, something that they had a direct say in! The first game ended in a 3-1 win for 1874 and better was to come three days later when in the club picked up its first trophy in only its second game by beating fellow fans-run club AFC Rushden and Diamonds 3-0 to lift the Supporters Direct Shield – a success that was highlighted on the front page of ‘The Non-League Paper’; Not bad for an eight-month old club! Just under a month later 1874 staged its first competitive fixture when Oldham Boro visited the Barton Stadium. Just under 500 fans turned up to see a little bit of history being made and although they didn’t see their team start with a win - the game ended 1-1 - the sheer joy and enthusiasm for ‘their’ club that was demonstrated that afternoon was both obvious and abundant. This level of support wasn’t a flash in the pan either as during our first season 1874’s average home league attendance was 320 – which put the club in the top 100 best supported clubs in non-league football. This total was boosted by the then record breaking attendance of 541 who flocked into the Barton Stadium in early October for the fans-lead ‘Bring a Mate Day’ initiative. However, there was to be no fairytale ending to the clubs’ first campaign as previous seasons’ champions Formby pipped Ian Street’s side to the second promotion spot on goal difference.

1874 Northwich History continued… But just as we had resigned ourselves to a second season playing First Division football, news came through about the sudden and unfortunate demise of Formby. As a result the league management committee asked 1874 if we would be prepared to step up into the Premier Division – an offer that was readily accepted! 1874’s unexpected elevation was met with a great deal of excitement but also some trepidation. After all, would the fledgling club be able to hold their own at the higher level against so many well established Premier Division clubs? Again, our concerns proved to be unfounded. Whilst retaining the bulk of the squad who had served the club so well during its inaugural campaign, ‘Streety’ made several judicious and well-judged additions to the squad and from the very outset of the campaign it was clear that 1874 were going to be amongst the top-six. As it transpired, the side finished in a hugely creditable third spot – which was way beyond the expectations of the vast majority of fans. Along the way, several other notable milestones were achieved, including the clubs’; First ever appearance in the World’s oldest and most famous knock-out competition – the FA Cup Record victory – the 9-0 defeat of Wigan Robin Park in the FA Vase on October 5 2014 Best FA Vase Run – to the Third Round Highest home crowd – 563 against Runcorn Linnets on 23 September 2014 In addition, 1874 became the only club to record a league ‘double’ against the all-conquering Glossop North End side that not only lifted the NWFCL title and League Cup, but also reached the FA Vase Final. Off the field, things also progressed very well. For instance, both supporters and players enjoyed a number of other well attended social events including race nights, bowls competitions, fans forums and end of year presentation dinners – which regularly attract over 100 supporters, players and back-room staff. The club has also started to develop, build and nurture relationships with a number of key stakeholders. For instance, well respected local company Britannia Carpets have recently agreed to extend their original two-year sponsorship deal for another 24 months. In addition, we have also introduced the ‘#Working Together’ initiative with a number of small and medium local businesses whom agree to support 1874 in exchange for giving

fans of 1874 discounts on their services and products. Last season also marked the start of our relationship with Winsford based Neuromuscular Centre (NMC) – which provides a range of unique services and specialist advice for adults with Muscular Dystrophy and other neuromuscular conditions – whom had agreed to become the clubs’ charity partner for the 2015/16 season and possibly beyond.... The partnership with the NMC is yet another example of how 1874 is demonstrating its commitment to be a ‘community’ club in terms of actions rather than words. Collections for local food banks and clothing for refugees are other ways that 1874 have demonstrated that we are not all about what happens between 3 and 4.45 pm every Saturday. And looking to the future, a Stadium Development Sub-Committee has also been formed with the remit of finding 1874 a permanent home in or close to Northwich. The 2015/16 season also saw the club run an U21 side, who finished a very credible fourth in the Cheshire U21 County League Championship division. Any mention of the 15/16 season cannot ignore another extremely competent and satisfying league campaign that ended with a fourth place finish. But undoubtedly the highlight of the season was the 3-0 drubbing of local rivals Witton Albion in the Mid Cheshire Senior Cup Final on their own patch. On the pitch, the higher placed side were out-fought and out-played whilst off the pitch they were outnumbered and out-shouted by the exuberant and delighted 1874 faithful! So, all in all, it has been a remarkable period of time since 1874 was born and everyone connected with the club are delighted with the massive progress we have made in such a short space of time. With our fourth season now upon us, we can proudly say that we have achieved what we set out to create – a sustainable, democratic, fans-run and community-focussed club that we and the town of Northwich can be justifiably proud of. But we cannot – and do not intend to – sit on our laurels. The club is determined to continue to develop and progress, albeit in a sustainable and stable manner which will allow the club to grow and meet its stated aims and objectives. The 2016/17 season will no doubt be as challenging but as exciting and exhilarating as our first three campaigns. But it is one that everyone associated with 1874 is looking forward with great relish excitement. So bring it on!

History of West… book launch! Last year West Didsbury & Chorlton enjoyed a record breaking season including a highest ever league position and phenomenal 15-1 win. To celebrate, we are releasing a brand new history book covering our club’s amazing 108 year long history, from humble beginnings as a casual church team to the club we have become today. In our new book, you’ll be able to read about all this and more, including anecdotes, interviews, photographs and press clippings from throughout our history. We are also going to serialise this in the programme so today is the start of this new feature.

PART 1 - HUMBLE BEGINNINGS The story of West Didsbury A.F.C begins in 1908 when the club was originally founded as Christ Church A.F.C by Mr R F Hartley. He was the Sunday School Superintendent who together with some of the church officers, decided to form a football team out of the Boy’s Brigade Company and Young Men’s’ Bible Class at St. Luke’s Church, Burton Road. St. Luke’s was a daughter church within the parish of Christ Church on Darley Avenue, and although the early committee meetings were held on Burton Road the newly formed club was known as Christ Church A.F.C. The rooms adjoining St. Luke’s became the venue for the club committee meetings and other rooms on the premises provided convenient facilities for dominoes and billiards. The church indeed was a focal point in the community and West Didsbury, a village on the outskirts of Manchester with open fields to the south of Barlow Moor Road and beyond, a stark contrast to the urban sprawl of this part of South Manchester today. It was

common practice for the churches to pioneer soccer in those days, hoping to provide wholesome recreation for youngsters in the area, and many of the professional clubs in the Football League can look back to equally humble beginnings as a Sunday School team. Having formed a team, friendly matches were arranged for the first few seasons against sides like Withington Hospital and Pendlebury Colliery and then, in a desire to play more competitive football, the club joined the Manchester Alliance League in which they continued to play until the out-break of the First World War. In common with many other clubs most of the players were conscripted into the Forces,(the ‘call-up’ age was 18), and this had the effect of prematurely terminating the Alliance League as it was never resumed after the war. The club did not resume competitive play until after the war, on which there will be more in the next issue.

Ashton Athletic 2 West 3 match report…Tuesday 11 October. West ended a three game losing streak with a thrilling 3-2 victory away to Ashton Athletic. Manager Steve Settle made six changes from Friday nights home defeat as Scott Mason, Joe Shaw and Lee Gavin all missed out through injury. Hayden Buckley-Smith replaced Dean Williams in goal whilst there were starts for Paul Socha, Rick Ainsclough, Rick Gleave and Jonny Poizer as West’s front four age averaged just 21. Both teams started brightly and both created early chances as Ashton Athletic thought they’d taken an eight minute lead when Hayden Buckley-Smith caught a corner but was barged in the back spilling the ball allowing Isaac Kusaloka to head home but the referee blew for a foul. A minute later West went close with an effort of their own as Rcck Gleave did superbly to turn his marker before curling an effort just wide of the post from the edge of the area. West went close again on 13 minutes with a double chance as Rick Gleave broke the offside trap but his cross just evaded three waiting West players in the middle before Ben Woods put his cross back across goal but Poizer couldn’t force it towards goal. Ashton Athletic countered and only a superb tackle from Richmond Botchey denied Kusaloka. West took the lead on 21 minutes as a wonderful pass from Ben Woods cut through the Ashton defence leaving Poizer one-on-one; the West striker made no mistake and powered an effort beyond Martin Pearson into the bottom left hand corner. It was Poizer’s fifth goal of the season. Three minutes later West almost doubled their lead as they jinxed through the Ashton defence but Ash Woods left footed effort was brilliantly saved on the line one handed by Pearson. Captain Anthony Potts followed that up with a header just over the bar at the far post following a good corner from Rob Black. Two minutes later Ashton created their best chance up to that point as a quick counter attack down the left and low cross found Kusaloka but he fired wide with the goal at his mercy. The game continued to open up as both sides went end-to-end as first Gleave saw a hard goal bound effort blocked before Buckley-Smith saved a hard effort curled towards goal form the edge of the area. Ashton began to assert themselves on the game but the West defence held resolute under increasing pressure in the final third with Buckley-Smith again pushing a strong effort from distance away from goal.

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

On 43 minutes West almost made it 2-0 as first Ben Woods volleyed over Socha’s cross before Ash Woods hooked an effort over his head onto the roof of the net after Pearson dropped cleared effort. Neither side relented before the half which ended after 51 minutes as a result of the referee’s watch stopping but West took a deserved lead into the break. The second half continued the same unrelenting tempo as the first and Weat almost made it 2-0 on 52 minutes as Ash Woods again broke the offside trap, selflessly squared to Poizer but the cross was slightly behind him and Ashton were able to clear. Three minutes later West again countered with Ben Woods curling another low effort just wide of the post from 10 yards out after superb work from Gleave. West’s pressure was finally rewarded on 65 minutes as they broke down the left, the low cross from Poizer found Black in the middle and the West teenager cannoned the crossbar; the ball fell to Ash Woods who drove it back across goal allowing Black to flick it into the bottom corner. Ashton Athletic fought back immediately as Marcus Cusani glided past Botchey, harshly booked in the first half, and his shot snuck past Buckley-Smith into the bottom right hand corner. West rang the changes as Jordan Poole and Ben Steer replaced Rick Ainsclough and Ben Woods as Settle tried to counterattack West’s natural desire to sit deep. Ashton pulled level on 77 minutes as Botchey was adjudged to have committed a foul at the edge of the area, despite appearing to get much of the ball, and Cusani stepped up and powered his second over the wall to make it 2-2. The games turning point came a minute later as the referee brought play back to book Rob Black for a foul with the home side bearing down on goal. A minute later West were ahead as they countered again and Gleave played in Black with a superb through ball allowing the West teenager to power a shot that was too hard for Pearson to hold and hand West the lead for a second time. West went close again a minute later as Gleave, Black and Ash Woods combined to open up the Ashton defence but he fired straight at the keeper. Despite late pressure from the home side, and an additional 5 minutes of added time, West secured a vital three points to keep them in sight of the top 4. It was the first win over Ashton Athletic in seven meetings between the two sides and only West’s second victory at Brocstedes Park in six visits.

West 1 Irlam 2 match report‌Friday 7 October It was a week to forget for West as they collapsed to their third straight home defeat on a night that was ultimately overshadowed by Lee Gavin suffering a dislocated shoulder. Ahead of kick off, West were boosted by the return of Richmond Botchey and Scott Mason to the starting line up with the later playing against his former club. With the injury crisis refusing to relevant however, Steve Settle named himself and Head Coach Steve Brockley on the bench. The game start out with a furious tempo as both sides attempted to gain the upper hand with fast passing football but it took until the 32nd minute for either side to fashion a clear cut chance as Irlam broke the offside trap and forced Dean Williams into an excellent save at his near post oneon-one. It was the visitors who created the half's only other save although they did twice create attempts on goal from long range but without troubling Williams and ensuring the sides remained deadlocked at the break. The second half was as incident filled as the first wasn't and was merely a few seconds old when Ben Woods burst into the box only to have his path blocked by the hand of the Irlam defender. However the referee awarded a free kick just on the edge of the area rather than inside. West failed to make the most of the free kick but led 6 minutes later when a superb through ball released Ash Woods one-onone and the West striker kept his

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

composure to lift his shot over the Irlam goalkeeper. The lead lasted just seven minutes when Irlam were awarded a penalty for a push inside the area following a free kick much to the bemusement of the home crowd and players. Steve Nixon made no mistake however and drilled his penalty confidently down the middle to bring Irlam level. West looked to press for another and on 64 minutes Joe Shaw narrowly volleyed over after West's best passing move of the game to that point. Disaster struck 4 minutes later as Lee Gavin, having turned his marker, was cynically kicked from behind with the impact of the fall causing him to dislocate his shoulder which saw the West midfielder hospitalised. With the loss of Gavin, Irlam looked the likelier of the two teams as they forced a superb save from Williams on 78 minutes after a whipped in free kick was headed towards goal. West survived a scare on 90 minutes as a defensive mix-up between defender and goalkeeper saw the ball desperately cleared off the line. Irlam's winner came in stoppage time, having forced a series of corners, it was headed home at the near post from Steve Nixon with Williams protesting for a push in the West goal. Replays suggesting a combination of a slip and a shirt pull aiding Irlam for in their winner but take nothing away from Irlam who extracted their revenge of a 6-0 thrashing earlier in the season.
