Welcome to BARNOLDSWICK TOWN A warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Barnoldswick Town to Brookburn Road for today’s game.

A review of the last weeks matches Since our last home game which resulted in a second 4-1 win, this time against Barnton, in a tougher match than the score may indicate, we have been involved in two Cup games. Disappointingly going out of the Buildbase FA Vase, 3-2 against Penistone Church after extra time. This was quickly followed by our first visit to Radcliffe Borough of the Evo-Stik League on Tuesday where we recorded an impressive 2-1 victory. Steve made a number of changes giving some of the squad players a chance to stack a claim. He wasn’t disappointed with a good team performance, Georgi Whyment and Ben Steer scoring the goals.

Welcome to Barnoldswick Town It is with pleasure that we welcome Barlick, for what will be a tough encounter at Brookburn Road. At the time of print they currently sit 7th in the league with six wins, one draw and four losses from their first eleven games. Scoring 25 goals, conceding 18 and having 19 points on the board. We hope all their fans enjoy the match and wish them a safe journey back after the game.

Youth team call up’s Three of our new members of the Youth team have been called up to the Manchester County FA Under 18’s representative squad for their forthcoming matches in the FA Youth League competition. The three players selected are Martin McDermott, Tim Hanbury and Emmanuel Olaluy and everyone at the club wishes them well in the matches which will be held over the next couple of months.

Dates for your diary One of the key aims of the Clubs Committee this year is to ensure that we enhance the use of the pitches and clubhouse on match day. By doing so, we hope to both increase our presence in the Community and raise additional revenue. As such, the Youth Section of the club are organising a Quiz Night in October, details of which are in this programme and advertised in the club house, we hope you will be able to support these events. We would also like to give advance notice that our annual Bonfire party will actually fall on November 5th this year after our planned home game against Winsford.

Volunteering with the club As we continue to compete at the top end of the NWCFL, at the same time as offering football opportunities from Under 6’s to Adults the pressure on our volunteers continues to grow. As such, if you are regular at the Matches or live locally and have a couple of hours to spare to help the club to continue to progress, please have a word with anyone behind the bar.

Who’s up next? Tuesday 4th October – Squires Gate (h) 7.45pm ko Friday 7th October – Irlam FC (h) 7.45pm ko Tuesday 11th October – Ashton Athletic (a) 7.45pm ko

Enjoy the game, and a safe journey home to all after the game.

Steve Settle’s Notes Hello and welcome to today’s Macron Cup tie against Barnoldswick Town. This is the third cup game in succession for us and so far our record shows one win and one defeat; we are hoping that by the end of this afternoon we can make that two. It’s fair to say that we haven’t done ourselves justice in cup competitions yet this season following the disappointing home defeat to Squires Gate in the FA Cup in a game we dominated. We followed that up on Saturday with an equally disappointing extra time defeat at Penistone Church. We hadn’t got going when we fell behind just after the hour mark but we managed to turn it round thanks to goals from Matty Kay and a superb Rob Black strike. However we couldn’t hold on and conceded with a sucker punch of a goal in stoppage time. In extra time we were all but forced into playing with 10 as Matty did his best to play on despite a back injury and looked the more likely as the home side resorted to using the wind to kick it into touch for goal kicks. However we failed to take our chances and were punished for a defensive mistake at the death. We’re obviously gutted about the result as we felt we could make significant progress in the competition but we cannot dwell and let it distract us from our overall ambitions as a club. Luckily in this league an opportunity to prove yourself is never too far away and we certainly proved that at Radcliffe Borough in the Manchester Premier Cup on Tuesday night. It was a good chance to test some of the players on the fringes and give them their chance to push their claim for a spot in the starting line-up. Rick Ainsclough and Mo Noor made their first starts since joining the club, Rick is a recent addition having returned from Canada where he was playing for the Oakville Blue Devils, and they both impressed in the midfield. Dan Clarke did well stepping up from the reserves whilst Georgi Whyment did well off the bench to score his first senior goal. It was a good chance for us to blood some youngsters and I was delighted to hand Carlos Mendes Gomes from the youth team his senior debut and he made an instant impact having a hand in both goals. Carlos was a hero for the youth two weeks ago helping the under 18s to their first ever FA Youth Cup win against Nantwich Town. Here’s hoping he’s the first of many from Nik Storey’s squad who will make the

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

step up. We can enjoy the Manchester Premier Cup draw now and hope we can draw one of the big guns such as FC United, Salford City or Curzon Ashton to give the club another night to remember. However we’ve a big game today to focus on and it presents a real chance at winning some silverware. We exited the Cup in the second round last season at home to First Division Eccleshall in a game where we were left to rue our missed chances. However we’ve enjoyed two quarter final runs under Andy Nelson and we want to build on that. First we have to get past a tough Barnoldswick Town side who’ve enjoyed a strong start to the season. ‘Barlick’ were the early pace setters last season and their 1-0 victory here in the league was a turning point in our season. They enter the game in good form and the several times we’ve seen them they’ve been impressive. I’d like to finish off today with a massive thank you to both our supporters and our volunteers. Both our committee and our volunteer base work tirelessly to ensure that our football club runs as smoothly as possible and without them we’d be nowhere. Likewise our supporters who’ve stepped in to help out as well helping out behind the bar, with social media and even helping out on the gate. It’s great to see so many people down on match days and it gives everyone a real boost. We hope you enjoy the game.

Enjoy the game!

History of BARNOLDSWICK TOWN Formed in 1972 and named Barnoldswick United(1972) so called due to being canny Yorkshiremenhad there been a previous club named Barnoldswick United and they had outstanding debts the new club would have been liable for them. The field started out as a grazing meadow for cattle, after a lot of hard work, it is now the pitch we play on. The club had 2 teams playing in the Craven & District Football League, in the early 1990's we joined the East Lancashire Football League again with 2 teams. In the late 1990's we had 3 teams our 1st & 2nd team teams joined The West Lancashire Football League, our 3rds staying in The East Lancashire League. The 2003/2004 season brought the amalgamation of Barnoldswick United (1972), Barnoldswick Park Rovers and Salterforth Juniors and we changed our name to Barnoldswick Town Football Club. It has always been in the club's constitution to get our ground up to the minimum standards of The North West Counties Football League and the 2009/2010 season saw us accepted into The North West Counties Football League.

Alongside our main pitch we have a floodlit training pitch. Our club house can hold up to 100 people and be hired out for functions. Our main sponsor is Silentnight Beds Ltd and the ground is named The Silentnight Stadium. In 2009/2010 our first season in The NWCFL saw us finish runners up in Division 1 and finalists in the prestigious West Riding County Cup beating Guiseley who won promotion to the Conference North along the way. It was an interesting season as we only expected to hold our own and try to make sure we didn't end up at the bottom of the league. Following on from our success in the 2009/2010 season we went from just looking to avoid relegation in the Premier Division 2010/2011 to astound ourselves by finishing a creditable 7th in the league, only suspensions and injuries we feel robbed us of a top three spot. In March 2012 we achieved The FA Grade E, enabling the club to enter The Evostick League when finishing in a promotion position. In June 2014 we achieved Charter Standard. For the 2016/2017 Barnoldswick Town have 1 team in The newly named Hallmark Security League and 1 team in The Lancashire Football League Western Division (Galaxy League). The Junior section has 21 teams in The East Lancashire League from U7's -U18's, plus one U12's girls team playing in The West Riding League. They also have a Tiny Town junior academy for 4 - 6 year olds.

West 4 Barnton 1 match report‌ Saturday 17th September West registered back to back wins in the league thanks to a 4-1 home win in their first ever meeting against Barnton. With West's injuries refusing to abate West manager Steve Settle was forced into two changes and handed Daniel Clarke his first team debut, who stepped up from the reserves, at centre back, whilst Lee Gavin returned to the starting line up, at right back in place of Paul Socha. West's first chance of the game came on nine minutes when a superb cross from Ben Steer on the right found Matty Kay at the far post and he forced Matthew Conkie in the Barnton goal into a save low down to his right. Two minutes later Ash Woods was released down the left after some good West passing but Rick Gleave could only fire over from his first time effort. West goalkeeper Hayden Buckley-Smith was called into action for the first time on 14 minutes to save at his near post after West surrendered possession on the right hand side inside their own half. On 21 minutes Kay almost handed West a freak lead as his whipped in corner almost snuck in at the far post only for it to be cleared off the line from the boot of a Barnton defender. Barnton, defied their recent form and continued to trouble West as BuckleySmith was again called into action to save at the far post from a header after a Barnton free kick across the penalty area. West grew into the game and on 26 minutes a superb pass from Ash Woods at the edge of the penalty area, his hold up play allowed him to play in Gleave on the left whose cross found Woods again inside the penalty area but the West striker fired just wide of the post. The deadlock was broken on 29 minutes when good work from Ash Woods down the left after a through pass from Matty Kay saw his low cross find Joe Shaw inside the six yard box and he flicked it into the bottom right hand corner to give West the lead.

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

It was 2-0 on 36 minutes when Ben Steer added his second goal of the season as he evaded his marker with a deft first touch and drilled an unstoppable effort into the bottom left hand corner off the inside of the post. The goal handed West a slightly flattering two goal lead at the break West almost made it 3-0 on 53 minutes as a quick Steer through found Gleave who did superbly to chest it into the path of Ash Woods whose first time volley was superbly saved by Conkie. The miss would prove costly as a minute later Barnton were back in the game after a defensive mis-communication between Buckley-Smith and Clarke allowing Chris Smith to tap home from 2 yards out. West almost earned an instant reply as another Steer cross was taken off the foot of a waiting Gleave by a great clearance at the far post. West stepped up their pressure as Ash Woods jinxed through the defence but saw his goal bound effort deflected away from goal by the Barnton captain via his midriff on 56 minutes. Five minutes later Ash Woods went close again as he fired wide from a narrow angle with two men unmarked in the middle. The misses were almost punished in the biggest way possible as a good Barnton move down the left saw a superb cross evade everyone bar Chris Smith; however the Barnton forward could only lift his header just over the bar. Gleave responded with a chance of his own, forcing Conkie into pushing away a hard shot from the edge of the area into the path of Ash Woods; however the forward couldn't direct it towards an empty net. With just eight minutes remaining West put the game beyond doubt as a superb free kick from Joe Shaw was whipped into the box and Ash Woods rose highest to power a header past Conkie in the Barnton goal. The game was put beyond doubt in the 89th minute as a free kick from the exact same spot, again by Shaw, was missed by Conkie and Clarke managed to scramble it over the line

Penistone Church 3 West 2 AET match report‌Sat 24th Sept. West crashed out of the FA Vase after a 3-2 extra time defeat away to Penistone Church. West were forced into several changes but were able to welcome back Dean Williams and Anthony Potts into the starting line up whilst there was room for Rob Black and debutant Rick Ainsclough on the bench. The game started slowly but West made the games first chance as a cross from the right by Ben Steer almost found the head of an unmarked Ben Woods arriving late at the far post on 6 minutes. Three minutes later Penistone created their first chance and should have been ahead but defender Bret Lovell put his free header wide of the post. The direct ball was Penistone's route to goal, aided by the wind, as they repeated the feat on 16 minutes heading another free kick wide of the post On 19 minutes Steer, who posed West's best attacking threat to goal, went down the right found Ash Woods with his low pass but the West forward curled it just past the post. A minute later it was Williams who was the first keeper called into action as he saved an effort from the edge of the area. On 27 minutes West almost lead as a Penistone clearance fell to Matty Kay 30 yards out, Kay spotted goalkeeper Adam Rhodes off his line and attempted to lob him but the wind drifted it wide of the goal with the keeper well beaten. Six minutes later Steer went close again as a Joe Shaw free kick was deflected by the wall into the wingers path but again his header blew wide of the goal with the keeper beaten. Penistone's best chance of the half came on the stroke of half time as a low cross from the wing just evaded the boot of the Penistone forward on the line meaning the sides would go into the half 0-0. The second half was 17 minutes old before the first real action as Penistone broke the offside trap but with Dale Kelly bearing down on goal Williams made a sensational save turning a rocket of a shot round the post with a strong hand from point blank range. The relief was short lived however as from the resultant corner Lovell rose highest and powered past a helpless Williams to give the home side the lead. The goal sparked West into life and on 74 minutes they were level following their best move of the game resulting in Lee Gavin's shot being too strong for the Penistone keeper to handle and Matty Kay reacted quickest firing under the keepers legs for his seventh goal of the season.

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

Two minutes later West were almost ahead as Joe Shaw clipped the top of the crossbar with a free kick from 25 yards out. They were ahead a minute later when a superb pass down the right released Ash Woods, he did well, cutting his pass inside to Rob Black who fired his first time effort off the underside of the crossbar to give West the lead. On 79 minutes it was almost three as substitute Jonny Poizer, on in place of Ben Woods, first touch was to force a strong save from Rhodes in the Penistone goal with a hard free kick from 25 yards out. From the resultant corner Potts header was cleared off the line. The game became increasingly end-to-end as both teams tired and searched for a goal to swing the game in their favour. The goal fell to the home side in the 92nd minute as a seemingly harmless cross from the West left hand side was punched away by Williams but only into the path of Danny Joyne and his deflected effort found its way into the bottom left hand corner forcing the game into extra-time. 30 additional minutes followed with West effectively playing with 10 as a Matty Kay back injury restricted the player to a walking pace as he valiantly played on. Despite this it was West who looked the more likely in the extra space as Pensitone resorted to kicking the ball long into touch in a bid to catch their breath. On 93 minutes a superb West move saw a cross flicked on by Kay into the path of Jonny Poizer at the far post but Rhodes produced a superb save to deny him. Six minutes later West went close again as Poizer fired just wide as Joe Shaw was appeared to be wrestled to the ground at the very edge of the penalty area. On 109 minutes another cross, this time from the left, found Black at the far post but he headed just wide of the post. The winning goal came five minutes from the end, and it fell to the home side, as a long punt up the middle was failed to be cleared by Potts, the ball was played out wide to Duncan Richards and his low cross was poked home on the line by Danny Joynes to prompt a pitch invasion from the home support. With both sets of players dead on their feet the goal proved to be the final action of the game as West failed to reach the first round proper of the FA Vase for the first time in four years.

From the Terrace Matt Britton After you’ve spent enough time watching football, you get to a point at which you’ve pretty much seen all you’re ever going to see. The games, like the endless mundane years of your life, all roll into one. Once you reach this level of ennui, it takes a lot to shake it off. Thirty yard screamer? Snore. Arched free-kick into the top corner? Seen it. Backheeled panenka penalty? Bore off mate. But every so often, you’ll see a moment of such breathtaking beauty that it sticks with you. It could be something as simple as a shimmy, or something altogether more complex - but it sticks with you. For me, those glimpses of excitement have become increasingly difficult to find as life ticks on - but when they happen, they stick out. 2015/16 was a rare one, in that joy could pop up almost weekly at times - but in my mind, there’s no doubt that the defining moment of last season came on March 14th 2016, and I’ve thought about those glorious few seconds pretty much endlessly ever since. At the time, West were going through an incredible Indian summer of form - the title well beyond our reach realistically, but a hot run of results and the mathematical possibility that maybe, just maybe… it was certainly an intoxicating mixture. One notable extreme case was Berlin-based supporter who had arranged to fly in especially for the Runcorn Town away fixture that was coming up a week later, just to maybe be a part of history. But on this night, the Tuesday night air was still and heavy down at Brookburn Road as West took on Abbey Hey. History was ready to be made. In common with much of our incredible springtime performances, the three main protagonists in this particular story were Ben Steer, Ash Woods and Nic Evangelinos - each a player seemingly out of a cartoon version of the game, having their own particular special moves that combined for this one special moment in time. It starts with a West throw in about 25 yards from goal. 0-0, but we’re 20 minutes in at this point, so the opposition already know what’s coming Steer’s particular superpower is that of a long throw, pin-point in its accuracy, brutal in its delivery. Naturally, the Abbey Hey backline

retreat as far back as they realistically can without just standing on their own goalline. Evangelinos - tricky, spritely Nic - has had his shooting boots on all season, and the opposition know it, with three men making sure he’s tied up before the ball is inevitability flung in. But where’s Woods? West’s barrel chested oneman army of a striker is just the kind of player you need in a skirmish in the box, always liable to pop up to nod in a loose ball, or force it home when required. He stands on the byline at the edge of the box, in such a poor position and looking so disinterested that he’s not worth worrying about, surely. Steer does his usual routine - a little drying of the ball, paces back, and that javelin-thrower run up before the stop, release and… he’s aimed for Woods instead of the melee in the box. But it’s high, so high, and there’s enough men already running to close him down. Woods stands, statuesque - and the heartbreaking thing, looking back, is that the poor onrushing defenders have no idea what’s about to happen next. A normal player would’ve settled for lofting the ball back into the mixer before trying to get involved himself, happy with his job. But, rooting himself to the floor, and spotting a run in the corner of his eye, Ash Woods took my breathe away. This might sound wild, or made up, but I know what I saw. Woods, with every sinew in his neck straining, somehow managed to turn the ball 90 degrees and drill it across the face of the goal like Roberto Carlos might’ve done with his feet in his prime. Like all the best moments in your life, everything happened both fast and slow: it still makes me woozy remembering. It isn’t so much that this turn of events was unexpected - which it was but that it barely seemed plausible. It was like Ash had discovered an extraordinarily specific loophole in the laws of physics that no-one else knew about, a law allowing for fan favourite forwards in season-end dead rubbers to commit acts of accuracy and barbarity to the ball with their head. Continued overleaf…

WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

From the Terrace continued… You can’t blame the defenders for not anticipating this turn of events, for such a feat of human strength and endeavour had never yet been seen on a football pitch. And while Evangelinos was known for his guile and trickery, he also had another ace up his sleeve - the ability to slip away from defenders and pop up at the right moment to punish them. The keeper, presumably in awe, was powerless to stop the ball thundering past him before it met a thankful Nic to volley it home from close range. From Ben Steer’s hands near the away dugout,

to the back of the net, via one of the most ludicrous assists imaginable, all in the space of 4 or so seconds. The game finished 3-1 to West, and would be the end of their hot streak. Successive draws away at both Runcorn teams put paid to that ember of hope that somehow, maybe, there could be silverware to cap Steve Settle’s first season in charge. But for all those who were there that chilly Tuesday night in March, we’ve got something even more valuable to cherish - the memory of Ash Woods changing what we understood could be possible for any of us to achieve.
