Welcome to RUNCORN TOWN A warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Runcorn Town to Brookburn Road for tonight’s game. A review of the last weeks matches Following the results of the weekend of 27th August and the matches held on the Bank Holiday Monday, for 24 hours we found ourselves in the position of being the only unbeaten team in the league. Unfortunately this only lasted 24 hours as we suffered a 4-2 defeat to Bootle. This match perfectly summed up the challenge of the NWCFL Premier Division where it looked like we were slightly off the pace and came up against a really strong Bootle team who fully deserved their victory on the night. However, the disappointment of the Tuesday was soon forgotten with Fridays 6-0 victory against an Irlam team sitting top of the league having to be accomplished by one of the best performances from a West Didsbury team, that some of us who have been around for twenty years plus have ever seen. The teams pressing game, passing football and quality of the goals was a joy to behold, and sent West fans, both at the match and following on Twitter, looking forward to the next few matches and season ahead. Welcome to Runcorn Town It is with pleasure that we welcome Runcorn Town, for what is certain to be a very close game. At the time of print they currently sit 2nd the league with five wins and two losses from their first seven games and level on points with Bootle who currently sit top of the table. We hope all their visitors enjoy the match and wish them a safe journey back to Runcorn after the game. Youth team call up’s Three of our new members of the Youth team have been called up to the Manchester County FA Under 18’s representative squad , for their forthcoming matches in the FA Youth League competition. The three players selected are Martin McDermott, Tim Hanbury and Emmanuel Olaluy and everyone at the club wishes them well in the matches which will b held over the next couple of months.
Dates for your diary One of the key aims of the Clubs Committee this year is to ensure that we enhance the use of the pitches and clubhouse on match day. By doing so, we hope to both increase our presence in the Community and raise additional revenue. As such, we will be organising a quiz night in late September/early October, details of which will be in the next home games programme and advertised in the club house, we hope you will be able to support these events. We would also like to give advance notice that our annual Bonfire party will actually fall on November 5th this year after our planned home game against Winsford. Volunteering with the club As we continue to compete at the top end of the NWCFL, at the same time as offering football opportunities from Under 6’s to Adults the pressure on our volunteers continues to grow. As such, if you are regular at the Matches or live locally and have a couple of hours to spare to help the club to continue to progress, please have a word with anyone behind the bar. Who’s up next? Steve Settle’s Notes Good evening and welcome to Brookburn Road for this evenings league fixture against our friends from Runcorn Town. We hope that their officials’ players and fans enjoy the evening and a successful season after today! Runcorn have a new management team in place for this season and their early season form suggests that they will be a force to be reckoned with. I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome Chris Herbert and his management team to the league, after tonight we wish you the best of luck! They come into today’s game 2nd in the table with notable victories over local rivals Runcorn Linnets and the impressive AFC Liverpool. With this in mind the boys will most certainly need to be at their best if we are to get the result we want tonight! Tonight’s game comes off the back of a busy week for us last week with games against Bootle and Irlam. In some ways the 2 games represented a microcosm of our season thus far. Against Bootle injuries to key players forced us into some changes and we never really found our rhythm. As such Bootle ran out deserved 4-2 winners. In contrast the Irlam game was exceptional. At times this season, away at New Mills most notably, we have shown that we are an excellent footballing side. After the Bootle game, Brocks and I wanted to see a response and boy did we get one. From the first minute to the last we dominated every aspect of the game. We showed quality in possession with some clinical finishing and great desire to work hard out of possession to pressure Irlam. When you consider that Irlam were top of the league to get a 6-0 away win was simply fantastic and breads great confidence. I was particularly pleased with a couple of the goals. Joe Shaw’s 40 yard freekick showed the imagination and quality that he brings to our team and Johnny Pozier’s volley was a spectacular finish to a great team move! Certainly a goal of the season contender already! I was also pleased that Ben Woods
got himself on the score sheet. Ben has had to be a little patient since his arrival but his performance on Friday night puts him in the picture for a start tonight! If we win tonight’s game we have the chance to go to the top of the league and whilst there is nothing given out in September, it would be representative of the players efforts in the first month. Our job as a management team now is to make sure we eliminate the inconsistency and ensure that we build on the solid start we have made! On the injury front we have mixed news. Marko has missed the last couple of games with an Achilles injury but we are hopeful that with some rest he will be ready to return to action in the next few months. Simmo is still struggling with an ankle knock that he picked up in the opening game however Lee Gavin is now match fit and Gaz Lilley is showing signs of recovery by getting some game time with the reserves. Ben Steer picked up an ankle knock against Bootle but we are hopeful that he will be fit to play some part tonight. As always thanks for your continuing support and enjoy the game!

History of RUNCORN TOWN Runcorn Town were formed in 1967 under the name of Mond Rangers. They played for the first few years in the Runcorn Sunday league, and in 1973 they made the decision to try Saturday football in the impressive Warrington and District League (WDL).
the first attempt and also the League Cup. The following year they finished as runners up in Division Two, and with it promotion to Division One. In 2001/02, they achieved their finest hour with an away tie in the cup at Manchester United Ladies, where they went down 4-3. The ladies team left Mond in 2001 to merge with Liverpool FC Ladies.
In their first season they finished as runners up, and after amalgamating with ICI Weston for the 1974/75 season, they became one of the strongest sides in the league. They remained in the WDL until 1984 when they were elected to join the West Cheshire League (WCL) Division Two. A reserve team was also set up playing in the WDL and a youth team established.
The 2004/05 saw success return to the club with the first team finishing as runners up in Division Two, winning the Runcorn Senior Cup and reaching the final of the Bowl. The reserves won WCL3, the WCL Shield, and also reached the final of the Warrington Guardian Cup. Both teams were promoted.
Mond established themselves as a good, solid mid-table team until the 1991/92 season when they won their first silverware in the West Cheshire Bowl as well as a respectable sixth place finish. The following season they finished third in the league and reached the Bowl final, and improved again the following season by finishing third in the league, scoring 100 goals, and regaining the Bowl. Promotion finally came in 1994/95 when they finished second in the league scoring 118 goals. They also reached the Final of the Cheshire Amateur Cup but lost 2-1 to Poulton Victoria in a match played at Prenton Park, Tranmere. This period of success was mirrored throughout the club. The youth team won the league in 1993/94, and were runners up in the Cheshire Youth Cup. The following season they went one better in the Cheshire Youth Cup and also won the Warrington Youth Cup. The reserves meanwhile switched to the Chester League, winning Division Two in 1996/97 and then Division One the season after. They did not lose a game for two seasons. The reserves were then successful in joining the WCL's newly formed Division Three in 1998. 1998 also saw a women's team play at Mond for the first time, with the team playing in the North West Ladies League. They won Division Three at

Meanwhile the first team struggled in WCL Division One, despite sharing the Bill Weight Memorial Trophy in that first season. They were relegated for the first time in the clubs history in 2001/02.
Ahead of the 2005/06 season, the club changed their name to Runcorn Town in order to try and bring a more professional look to the club in general, and hopefully increase support from both businesses and individuals in the local community. A decision was also made to try and improve facilities at the club with a view to joining the North West Counties League. Although progressing off the pitch, the team had mixed fortunes on it. The youth team finished third in the league and won the league cup. The reserves adapted well to WCL2 and the first team got off to a good start by winning the Bill Weight Memorial Cup. The Runcorn Cup was added but on the final day of the season, Town slipped into the relegation places for the first time to suffer a heartbreaking relegation. To make matters worse, although the reserves finished 6th in WCL2, they were also relegated as clubs cannot have more than one team in each division. Town quickly regrouped and bounced back by winning the WCL2 for the first time in the clubs' history. The reserves also had a new look team with the club disbanding the youth team and "merging" it with the reserves, and despite most of the team playing open aged football for the first time, finished in sixth place in the league.
History of Runcorn Town continued The 2007/08 season was probably the most successful in the clubs' history, with the team opening the season by sharing the Bill Weight Cup with West Kirby after a thrilling 3-3 draw in the Final. The club also won the Runcorn Cup, were runners up in the Pyke Cup, and finished third in the league, the clubs' highest ever finish. The reserves were disappointed to finish third in the league, but won the West Cheshire Shield. The following two seasons saw Town continue to push for honours with both the first team and reserves registering top four finishes. Off the field, the transformation of the ground continued with floodlights installed for the first time. The summer of 2010 saw the club again take a massive step forward. The first team were elected to join the North West Counties Football League (NWCFL) and entered the FA Vase and Cheshire Senior Cup for the first time. In their first season the club achieved promotion to the NWFCL Premier Division as well as reaching the Last 32 of the FA Vase.
The following season saw Town shock the Premier Division as they finished runners up to Ramsbottom United as well as reaching the Last 32 of the FA Vase once more. 2012/13 saw the club involved in another exciting promotion challenge, eventually finishing fourth, although they went one better in the FA Vase, reaching the Last 16 for the first time. The last couple of seasons have saw Town struggle to recapture past form in the NWCFL Premier Division, although they have established themselves somewhat as a Cup team. Continued success in the FA Vase has seen them reach at least the Second Round in every season entered, whilst in 2014/15 they reached the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Cup for the first time, famously winning at Conference North side Barrow. 2016 has brought the appointment of Chris Herbert as Manager after Simon Burton left the club after seven year, and with a new look backroom team and players, we are hopeful that we can re-establish ourselves as one of the leading teams in the NWCFL

Alcohol may be purchased and consumed in the bar area only. Children are not allowed in the Club House unless accompanied by an adult. Encroachment onto the playing area is forbidden at all times. Standing is not allowed in front of the seated areas. All forms of transport on the clubs car park is at the owners’ risk.

West 1 Padiham 0 match report… Saturday 27th August An 87th minute Rick Gleave winner made it three wins from four for West as they registered a second consecutive home league win. The game’s first chance came on six minutes as Padiham failed to clear Ben Steer’s throw in but Matty Kay dragged the rebound wide. Padiham responded with a chance of their own as a free kick was whipped in but it was too strong for Hayden Buckley-Smith in the West goal to hold but fortunately it was hooked clear before Padiham could apply the finish. Both teams continued to press and West thought they might have had a free kick in a dangerous position on 14 minutes before Jonny Poizer pounced on the loose ball but could only roll his shot into the hands of the grateful Padiham goalkeeper Michael Donlon. On 23 minutes West created their best chance to that point when a super Mark Rogers free kick was curled in but Poizer could only head over at the far post. Padiham went close four minutes later as West failed to clear the ball inside their own penalty area but fired wide with the goal at their mercy. Padiham went close again on 32 minutes when they broke the offside trap but their cross was headed wide unmarked at the far post. The game continued to flow end-to-end and Matty Kay was denied by a superb block after good build up play from Poizer on 34 minutes. Two minutes later Joe Shaw cannoned a first time effort off the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area after a low cross from the right hand side. Despite the goalmouth action at either end it remained goalless at half time.

The second half was just three minutes old when West were denied a penalty as Ben Steer crossed into the path of Kay only for the West forward to be dragged to the floor by the Padiham defence but the referee waved away the claim. West upped their tempo as Shaw played a superb through pass to Woods but the forward could only drag his shot wide. Steer continued to be a threat down the right as a superb header from Padiham defender Martin Parkes from the West wingers cross denied Ash Woods a certain goal. On 63 minutes Parkes again came to his sides rescue as Woods burst past Bamba into the visitor’s penalty and a diving block somehow managed to push Woods rocket of a shot onto the underside of the crossbar. West’s pressure continued as Padiham tried to hit on the counter attack and with 13 minutes remaining as Padiham’s Harry Dunn thought he’d put his side ahead when Buckley-Smith was called into action to push his near post effort into the side netting. With five minutes remaining West went close again as a superb save from Donlon denied Woods before Kay was hauled to the floor before he could dispatch the rebound with the referee refusing to give a penalty. The breakthrough came with just three minutes remaining as Steer cut inside playing in Andrews whose shot was blocked but fell into the path of substitute Rick Gleave who poked home to give West a deserved lead. West weren’t finished a thunderous effort denied West a second when Botchey cut inside from the left and unleashed one into the top corner but it was brilliantly saved again by Donlon but West secured their second win of the week.

West 2 Bootle 4 match report… Tuesday 30th August West’s unbeaten run in the league came to an emphatic end with a 4-2 loss at home to an impressive Bootle side. West were hit by late injury blows as both Matty Kay and Mark Rogers were removed from the line up through injury handing Rick Gleave and Scott Mason starts with the latter in the unfamiliar position of centre back. West almost took a first minute lead as a Ben Steer cross almost found Gleave at the far post with Martyn Andrews dragging the rebound just wide of the post. On 5 minutes Jonny Poizer played in Ash Woods but he was denied by a superb tackle. On 15 minutes Bootle were handed a penalty when Potts, clearing a cross with a fine header, was adjudged to have committed a foul. It was a controversial decision, however Bootle failed to punish West as Josh Hamilton stepped up only to be denied by a superb save from Hayden Buckley-Smith saving a hard shot to his right; his fifth penalty save in a West shirt. It would be worse for Hamilton as he blazed the rebound over the bar from two yards out. The missed penalty seemingly galvanised Bootle who gained the upper hand and Halligan was only denied a certain goal thanks to a superb Richmond Botchey block at the far post after an excellent pass across the box on 30 minutes. It would get worse on the injury front for West as Steer was forced out of the game with a twisted ankle leaving West forced into a re-shuffle with Ben Woods coming on at left back and Lee Gavin moving into the midfield.

West’s best move came on 36 minutes when Botchey burst down the right hand side playing in Andrews whose lay off found Joe Shaw but he curled just over the bar. A minute later Bootle led as low cross to the near post came loose inside the six yard box allowing Steve Jones to fire home. However West would head into half time level when Rick Gleave latched onto a flicked on header, drove forward playing in Shaw who curled an unstoppable effort into the top corner; it was an absolutely terrific strike. The second half was just five minutes old when Bootle retook the lead as a Bootle cross from the right hand side landed on the head of Scott Mason who could only divert it into his own goal. It was 3-1 on 69 minutes as Steve Jones added his second when West failed to deal with a corner and the Bootle striker fired home at the near post. West were handed a lifeline two minutes later as a superb Poizer cross was curled into the penalty area and Gleave reacted quickest firing an unstoppable volley past Ryan Jones in the Bootle goal. The points were wrapped up with 11 minutes remaining when Ryan Cox collected the ball 30 yards out and fired an unstoppable effort into the bottom right hand corner giving BuckleySmith no chance. West didn’t give up and a terrific Botchey cross almost found Gleave at the far post but it was headed clear and West experienced defeat at home for the first time since the South Manchester Derby.
