Welcome to NELSON Hello and welcome to tonight’s first home league fixture of the season as we entertain Nelson at Brookburn Road. Our season may be just three games old but it’s already in full swing as we’ve enjoyed three dramatic encounters so far against AFC Liverpool, twice and Runcorn Linnets. We had a terrific crowd to kick off the new season 10 days ago and it’s was great to see so many faces, many familiar but also some new ones. It shouldn’t need saying but, it seems in an era when clubs are asking supporters to be accountable for what they say on social media, without yourselves coming to watch this football club wouldn’t be what makes it so special and I’d like to personally thank everyone who attended on the opening day. Of course, it wasn’t all plain sailing as we had a significant amount of the groundskeeper’s equipment stolen 48 hours before the game meaning that we couldn’t even cut the grass. It’s a distressing situation to be in as we’re simply trying to make the best football club for everyone and there are individuals who want to dismantle it. The poor groundsmen, Bozz and Andy, have luckily managed to borrow and beg equipment to ensure we’ve a football game this evening. If that wasn’t enough we had a power cut following the final whistle forcing the players into cold showers; its fortunate that it just happened to be one of the hottest days of the year. Luckily the issue was identified, with a little help from our friends at Maine Road, showing just how tight knit a community we have in the NWCFL. On Saturday we started our NWCFL season slightly later than scheduled but we came away with a solid point from our visit to the Millbank Linnets Stadium. The game we played in March was one of the most tense and nerve racking games I’ve ever been a part of and we’d never previously even scored against them away so it shows just how far we’ve come that we took the lead twice and are disappointed with only a draw. In fairness both sides had chances to win it, Joe Shaw forced the goalkeeper into a wonder save in the first half whilst having a goal disallowed for offside but Hayden Buckley-Smith also made a superb save of his own to keep West in the game. The pleasing thing was that some of the football from players still learning to play with one another, at times, was sensational and you won’t see a better team goal than the first to setup Matty Kay to make it 1-0 anywhere this season. Watching, there’s still plenty more to come and its going to be an exciting season. This Saturday we host Squires Gate in the FA Cup, a home tie against fellow NWCFL is always going to be tough but it gives us a real chance to progress and if successful it will mark our best ever run in the competition. If you can make it down next Saturday, please bring a friend, a family member, anyone who might enjoy the day as it’s a big one for the club.

Enjoy the game, and a safe journey home to all our after the game. Pictures from Runcorn Linnets v West used courtesy of James Goodall.

Steve Settle’s Notes Good evening and welcome to Brookburn Road for our first home league game of the 2016/17 season. Tonight we welcome Nelson and we hope that their officials, players and fans enjoy the evening and a successful season after tonight! Tonight's game will be our 4th of the new campaign, following us needing a replay to progress past AFC Liverpool in the Emirates FA Cup and a 2-2 draw at last year’s runners up Runcorn Linnets. In those games this year’s squad has shown already that we are a little more resilient than previous West teams. We kept consecutive clean sheets against Liverpool, an achievement that probably needs the context of their investment in attacking players for those that don't know! If I’m brutally honest I’m really pleased with our start given the nature of pre-season. For one reason or another it has taken us until now to get our first choice team on the pitch and as such the lads may well look a little leggy going into the back end of games. Also Lee Gavin and Gaz Lilley, two important players for us last year, have been nursing their way back from injury. I have stressed throughout pre season how important it is for us to get off to a good start. It’s well documented that after 10 games last season we had only won 2! To finish 5th in the league given that start was some achievement, however if we wish to progress we need to start much better this time around. We have added a couple of faces to the squad from last year. Hayden’s injury in the warm up against FC United means we were forced into action to bring a keeper in. We’ve signed Dean Williams and he’s hit the ground running keeping 2 clean sheets against AFC Liverpool and we are delighted with his distribution. In Hayden and Deano we have 2 quality keepers for the season. We’ve also moved to bring in some experience for this year signing Martyn Andrews and Joe Shaw. Both players are experienced at higher levels and bring great quality to the team which will be crucial for us to kick on! In addition to that we have looked to blood some younger players in Rob Black and Georgi Whymet. Rob is a talented

attacking midfielder and Ive seen enough of him already to suggest that he can significantly contribute to us this year. I was delighted with his performance at Linnets with a great assist for Matty Kay before opening his account for the season. I hope it’s the first of many!! Georgi is still very young but is also an attacking midfielder. We will look after his development this year as he adapts to adult football but he is a player I have high expectations of. We are still looking to bring in maybe 1 or 2 players, particularly a centre half and possibly a centre forward but overall I’m happy with our squad at this stage. We are also excited about the restructuring of our youth and reserve teams with the aim of underpinning the first tem with a sustainable model in which we can start to promote from within. This includes Danny Iredale and Jim Hines running the reserves and Nik Storey coming in to look after the youth team. I’m sure you will join me in wishing both teams ‘all the best’ for the coming season. It is my hope that players will start to see pathways from the youth team right the way through to the first team and I’m expecting a couple of them knocking on my door As well as the developments on the playing side I know everyone connected with the club is looking to develop our ‘off-field’ activities to raise our profile in the community. If we can continue to increase the awareness of the club in the community we can hopefully continue to increase our fan base. As always thanks for your continuing support and enjoy the game! Setts

NWCFL Premier Division Results

WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

History of Nelson Think of a club that was the first English side to beat Real Madrid away from home. A side that also won away at Old Trafford in the same season. A side that has obtained positive results against six current Barclays Premiership clubs in league games (Manchester United, Crystal Palace, Hull City, Fulham, Southampton and Stoke City). A side that played in the Football League for ten seasons and has played competitive games against 34 current sides in the top four divisions. A side that has played many FA Cup ties in the competition proper with a record home attendance of over 14,000. All this, and more, has been achieved by ‘The History Boys’ of Nelson FC, also known as ‘The Admirals’. The origins of Nelson FC can be reputedly traced to a group of townspeople who in 1881, on witnessing a local football match between Burnley and Blackburn, were inspired to form their own team. However, it wasn’t until 1889-90 that they competed in a senior competition, joining the Lancashire League upon its formation. The Blues started well, with a series of top six finishes, and claimed the title in great style in 1895/96, winning 22 of their 30 games and scoring 105 goals. However in 1898-99 the original club was disbanded.

the remarkable step of an overseas tour to Spain, in May 1923. They performed with some success, winning two of their four games - a 2-1 success against Real Oviedo and a 4-2 victory at Real Madrid. Unfortunately Nelson`s time in Division Two was to be short-lived, lasting just the one season in which they finished second-bottom of the table. It was clear early on that they were struggling both on and off the pitch, but they achieved some remarkable feats on the way. They had a home victory over champions-elect Leeds United, one of only nine league defeats for the Yorkshire side. And their first away victory came at Manchester United. Few non-league clubs can claim to have won away at both Real Madrid and Manchester United! A return to Division Three North brought a drop in attendances, though big games saw new records established, such as 13,500 for the visit of tabletopping Darlington. That first season back in the third tier of the Football League saw a secondplace finish to the North-Eastern side, hence no promotion, and was to be the last time the Blues seriously threatened a return to the national stage.

Just a few months after their demise, Nelson were reformed and accepted into the North East Lancashire League, later joining the Central League. When football resumed after the First World War, Nelson embarked upon the most remarkable adventure of their history. In 1921 the thirteen non-reserve teams of the Central League were voted into the Football League`s newly formed Third Division North. The first league match, on August 27th 1921, brought a record attendance at Seedhill of 9,000.

The next season brought a new and never beaten record attendance at Seedhill of 14,143 for the visit of leaders Bradford Park Avenue. The home team went two goals down but came back to draw 2-2. Two seasons later Nelson became serious strugglers, finding themselves £6,500 in debt. A rock-bottom finish meant a re-election application. They had conceded 136 goals during the season, and all the problems seemed to be down to insufficient gate receipts during difficult times for the area. Re-election was granted in 1928, but three seasons later Nelson were back in the same situation, and 1930-31 was to be their final season as a League club. Nelson struggled on in the Lancashire Combination without winning any honours, and things became much bleaker in 1936. A big loss was incurred that season and the club disbanded on 7th August.

The next season, 1922-23, saw the Blues lead a close race for much of the season, and five wins in a row during April saw them romp away to the title. One team was promoted from each of the Third Division North and South of the Football League at that time, and it meant Nelson were entering a nationwide league for the very first time. On the back of their title triumph, and in preparation for life in Division Two, Nelson took

Following the war, Nelson returned to action and to the Lancashire Combination. They were involved in some terrific tussles for the title with Wigan Athletic over the next few seasons, winning it twice in 1949/50 and 1951/52. In those three seasons of 42 league games apiece, Nelson scored 125, 120 and 139 goals respectively. The first title season also saw Nelson clinch the Lancashire Combination Cup to

seal an historic Double in what was at the time one of the premier leagues in the country outside of the Football League. The men at the forefront of this period of success were two young player-managers. Centre-half Bob Johnson moved from Burnley for the start of the 1949/50 season and, when his contract expired, the Blues landed a young man from Manchester City, 30-year-old Joe Fagan. The team built by ‘Uncle Joe’ romped to the title in his first season in 1951/52. Joe left to join Liverpool`s boot room team in 1958 and 25 years later he was the manager who took the Reds to a European Cup, League Championship and League Cup treble. As Fagan was beginning his long association with the Merseysiders, Nelson’s fortunes were to move, quite markedly, in the opposite direction. A third Combination Cup arrived in 1959/60, but a second place finish in 1960/61 was to be the nearest they came to winning the Combination title again. A third place was collected in the final season of that League in 1981/82 - which by this time had lost much of its former quality and status - before the restructuring of the non-league pyramid. Nelson joined the Third Division of the newly created North West Counties League - an amalgamation of the Lancashire Combination and Cheshire County League - in 1982. During that era, Nelson also moved out of their old Seedhill ground, and it was sadly demolished to make way for the M65 motorway, although subsequently the route was tweaked and most of the original site is still intact, minus of course the stands and buildings. The club were transferred into the Second Division of the North West Counties League when the Third Division was dropped six seasons later. However, after one more season, the club`s new ground was deemed not to be up to league standard, and the team were forced to play in the Second Division of the West Lancashire League for four seasons. It was a tough period for the Blues, and they finished no higher than 15th in that time. After much hard work, the new ground at Victoria Park - known by the locals as ‘Little Wembley’• - was brought up to scratch, and the club were re-admitted to the North West Counties League. In the years that followed, Nelson usually finished in the top half of the lower Division. A cruel end to the 2000/2001 season saw Nelson finish above Atherton LR in the third and final promotion place on the final day of the season, only to see the latter granted a replay of their final game as their opponents had fielded an ineligible

player. Atherton won the replayed game to snatch away third spot from the Blues. Former Blackburn Rovers coach David Hall took over the manager`s role at the start of the 2004/05 season, and set about rebuilding a fresh young team. Hall was to leave after a poor start to the following season, but his assistant Graham Howarth took over and oversaw an incredible late run which propelled the Blues to a third place finish, bringing with it a first promotion for the club in 83 years. The club fought off relegation threats and maintained a place in the Premier Division for four seasons before administrative troubles forced the club to resign from the NWCFL in the summer of 2010. After a year out to regroup, Nelson rejoined the First Division under new ownership. With a mixed board containing English and Asian board members that reflect the diversity within the town in the modern era, the club now aims to build a strong multi-cultural community club that acts as a bridge between diverse sections of the community uniting everyone under the common banner of football and providing a pathway into senior non-league football for any local players good enough, regardless of their race or religion or background. Longer term the club want to re-establish themselves as the leading non-league club in the region and eventually regain the Football League place they lost in 1931. The first season back was a transitional one as the new owners learnt about life running a senior football team and a 15th place finish was achieved. The 2012/13 season started with a new young management team of Robert Grimes and Michael Morrison and things started well with The Admirals racing to the top of the table. However cracks soon started to appear and a couple of months in the management team departed along with most of the squad. Nelson limped along for a few weeks taking some heavy defeats due to fielding what was effectively the clubs reserve team before manager Mark Fell arrived. He immediately brought stability to the club and an upturn in fortunes along with a host of new signings. Through his contacts he also established a permanent training ground and base for the club at Accrington & Rossendale College meaning the club now boasts exactly the same training facilities as League Two neighbours Accrington Stanley. On the pitch the side recovered to a mid table 10th position. This season with several exciting new signings the club are expecting to seriously feature in the promotion shake-up and start to bring the glory days back to Nelson once again. West 0 AFC Liverpool 0 match report‌ West and AFC Liverpool kicked off the 2016/17 with a goalless stalemate in the Emirates FA Cup. With Steve Settle away and Steve Brockley serving a stadium ban coaches, Steve Eckersley and Rob Madden took charge of the team handing first team debuts to Dean Williams, Martin Andrews and Robert Black. There was a return to the starting line up to Lee Gavin who'd missed the end of last season due to injury whilst Joe Shaw returned following a brief stint at Ramsbottom United. Despite the heat the game began at a good tempo with Liverpool creating the first chance as West surrendered possession deep in their own half allowing Connor Belger to drag a shot just wide of the post. West responded though as they forced a corner after just three minutes; the delivery found Mark Rogers at the far post but his header cannoned off Joshua O'Connell in the Liverpool goal. The game continued to be even with both sides defence proving difficult to break down but West had a terrific chance on 20 minutes when Ash Woods cross found Black at the far post but the young winger headed just over. There was an early injury blow to West as Michael Simcock was forced to come off after just 20 minutes due to an ankle injury. Liverpool grew into the half and went close just after the half hour mark as a free kick was initially flicked on but volley just over inside the penalty area. A minute later they had serious claims for a penalty as Liverpool burst down the left through Emini Adebengro, Richmond Botchey seemingly poked the ball away from him as he reached the penalty area but the referee blew for a foul. After much discussion between referee and linesman, with both teams protesting their cases, the referee blew for a free kick right on the edge of the penalty area. Liverpool almost took full advantage as

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

Marvin Molyneaux clipped his free kick off the top of the right hand post. Liverpool continued to press and a good move down the right saw the ball cut back along the goal line and only a superb clearance from Botchey denied Liverpool the opener. However it was West who rued missed chances as on the stroke of half time Matty Kay lifted an incredible chip over the Liverpool defence into the path of the on-rushing Black but in choosing to take an extra touch trod on the ball before he could apply the final touch and the team went into half time level. The second half was just four minutes old when a great pass found Black, his lay off played in Woods who played Black back in but he was denied a goal by a superb tackle. On 53 minutes Ash Woods did brilliantly to evade two players on the right, cutting his pass inside to Matty Kay who curled his shot just wide of the left hand post. The surface and the searing heat did little to diminish the intensity of the second half and both sides went close on 68 minutes as West broke the offside trap with a quick flowing move as Joe Shaw called O'Connell into action but Liverpool responded by dragging a shot of their own just wide. As Liverpool had grown into the first half it was West who grew into the second as Ash Woods volleyed over on 72 minutes after good work from sub Jonny Poizer to win the back possession. Another quick passing move three minutes later freed up Rob Black but O'Connell was equal to his effort. As the minutes ticked away the game became increasingly open but it was Liverpool who finished the stronger as they won a corner in the final seconds of the game with the delivery finding the head of a Liverpool play who directed it towards goal before it was desperately scrambled away by West as the referee blew his whistle.

AFC Liverpool 0 West 1 replay match report‌ On a cold, wet and windy night in Liverpool a 12th minute Jonny Poizer goal was enough to secure West's passage into the next round of the FA Cup. Meeting just four days after their original meeting in the brilliant sunshine at Brookburn Road, the two teams met again at Marine FC in conditions more suited to winter than summer. Fortunately, despite the rain, the immaculate surface held up and a superb crowd was on hand to witness a thrilling cup tie. West manager Steve Settle, returning from holiday, made two changes to the starting XI from the original tie as Paul Socha and Jonny Poizer replaced the injured Michael Simcock and Richmond Botchey. The re-shuffle saw Lee Gavin in the unfamiliar position of right back as Matty Kay dropped back into midfield. West started brightly and Matty Kay forced the Liverpool goalkeeper O'Connell into a finger tip save as he attempted to bend one in from 30 yards out after just two minutes. A minute later Liverpool displayed their attacking intent as West goalkeeper Dean Williams was called into action to make a strong save after a pull back was volleyed towards goal. After a breathless start by both teams the deadlock was broken on 12 minutes when a superb angled pass between full back and centre back by Joe Shaw released Poizer who collected the ball, calmly drew out the keeper into 'dinked' it past him as it rolled over the line to calmly write himself into the history books as West's first ever away FA Cup goalscorer. Liverpool responded by upping their tempo and again called Williams into action on 25 minutes making a save low to his right hand post after a quick passing move. Two minutes later they went close again as they flashed a long range effort just wide following a quick free kick. It was West who finished the half strongest as on 43 minutes a superb cross field pass found Joe Shaw on the right hand side and his deep cross almost found the lurking Ash Woods at the far post. A minute later West won back possession from a throw in as Rob Black cut across field before curling a 20 yard effort at goal. The best move of the half came with the last touches of it, quick play from Shaw and Gavin found Martin Andrews on the right whose cross almost found the head of Poizer before the referee blew for a

very soft push but it remained 1-0 West at the break. The half time break sub the introduction of Emini Adebengro for AFC Liverpool, much a thorn in West's side in the original fixture. Much like the original fixture the intensity refused to relent as the second half wore on and Ash Woods went close on 56 minutes as a one touch passing move found him at the edge of the area but he could only fire into the keepers hands having done well to evade his marker. Two minutes later Liverpool almost levelled when an effort from the edge of the area whisked just past the post. West introduced Jordan Poole in place of Rob Black and he almost opened his account for the season instantly as a West corner reached him 20 yards out and his drilled shot was only just deflected wide for a corner. West's pressure continued as a Liverpool were forced to parry away a corner before the follow up flashed wide of the post. Liverpool didn't give up though as they broke down the left through Adebengro And a superb block from Anthony Potts forced a corner. West led by Mark Rogers defended the corners superbly before Dean Williams was called into a massive save one-on-one from Adenbengro On 76 minutes. From the corner, Williams was poleaxed collecting the ball, however no foul was given and Potts brilliantly blocked the shot off the line. The games controversy came from the resultant corner as the initial cross was cleared only to be played back into the six yard box into the path of Jason Carey who poked home but was adjudged to have been in an offside position. With just six minutes remaining West had the chance to wrap up the cup tie as Poizer, Shaw and Woods exchanged a superb series of single touches releasing Woods into the penalty area but his shot virtually scraped the paint off the outside of the post. Liverpool weren't finished but their best chance came from West as a deep cross was scooped back over Williams head from the edge of the area forcing the goalkeeper into a superb finger tip save with Potts clearing the danger with half the Liverpool team bearing down on goal. After an agonising five additional minutes of stoppage time the referee blew his whistle as West recorded their first ever away FA Cup victory.
