okitika Lions Club incoming president Latham Martin stocks the club's farmers market stall to be used as a fundraiser to boost different community projects. Every Saturday at the Revell Street Market, Lions sell a range of organic and fresh produce, plants, preserves and other homemade condiments, largely sourced or made

by West Coast growers or artisans. All proceeds from the not-for-profit fundraising stall will be shared around various community projects. In turn, community groups that benefit will take turns manning the market stall.

Buller nurse fighting Covid in Ireland Westport reporter ROSE O'CONNOR shares the Covid experience of her sister, Christine, who is a nurse in Ireland.

T

he Covid-19 pandemic has not been a pleasant experience for nurse Christine O'Connor, who grew up on her parents' (Eamon and Kath O'Connor) dairy farm just north of Waimangaroa.

Ms O'Connor has lived in Ireland for over 40 years. She is a nurse practitioner in a doctors' surgery at Blessington, 30km south-west of Dublin.

Wearing daily personal protective equipment (PPE), her work since Covid kicked in has mostly involved monitoring patients' temperatures and returning calls from patients, particularly advising them not to visit the surgery unless absolutely necessary. Since March 2020, most routine surgeries have been cancelled.

Ms O'Connor recently had her closest scare with Covid when she had been accompanying a patient in a car who later tested positive.

She was very happy to have received her two vaccinations (Atra Zeneca)in recent months.

"It is the only way I can see we are going to combat Covid. We can't stay locked down forever," she said.

Ms O'Connor has also had to pick up many additional shifts due to the absence of other staff. He partner, a landscape gardener, has been off work since March last year and has only recently started again.

While Ms O'Connor has been on the frontline fighting the disease from a medical position, her own personal life has also taken a hit. While one daughter, also a health worker lives with her, she has been isolated from her other two daughters living nearby.

She has been unable to regularly see her six grandchildren living in Ireland as well as missing the birth of her seventh in recent weeks. That daughter is an accountant and is now permanently working from home.

"It is becoming the new norm," Ms O'Connor said.

She has been home schooling her three children since March 2020.

Another grandson was born in Melbourne a few months ago and she was unable to be there to support her youngest daughter. With more lockdowns, she is unsure when she will be able to visit there.

Three of her grandchildren have now had their schools shut again and will not be returning until September – at this stage.

Blessington has had an outbreak.

"Their education has been badly disrupted for well over a year now," she said.

"It all puts a lot of stress on my daughter, who is also a nurse, and her husband who is a carpenter," she said.

Christine's 88-year-old mother Kath has also been unwell and she has felt helpless and frustrated at not being able to visit her. She has finally managed to secure flights and will be returning to Westport this month, with a two-week, $6000 quarantine to face first. She is now unsure whether she will get to visit Melbourne.

"Living on the other side of the world away from family is always difficult but it is the choice we make when we decide to live overseas.

I would usually visit 'home' (New Zealand) every few years and know that I was probably less than 48 hours away should I be needed. Covid has now stopped that for me and all the other thousands of ex-pats," she said.

"That has been very hard."

Ms O'Connor is rather critical of the way Ireland has dealt with the crisis. She is very praiseworthy of how Jacinda Ardern and the New Zealand Government has handled it by locking down so early.

"It's really gone crazy here since pubs and restaurants were allowed to open on December 8. We can now travel further than 5km so long as we Christine O'Connor, originally from Waimangaroa, at work in her role as a nurse practitioner, near Dublin. stick to our counties," she said.

Ireland is far from over the pandemic. As of May 25, according to the Worldometer's Covid-19 data, Ireland had recorded over 259,050 cases, 4941 deaths and 232,281 recoveries. This is in comparison to New Zealand's 2670 cases, 26 deaths and 2623 recoveries for the same date.

Both countries have a similar population of around five million.

To date, Ireland has fully vaccinated nearly 515,000 citizens compared with New Zealand's 191,000.

While her work is not happy to be losing such an experienced nurse for several months, Ms O'Connor is totally exhausted by the pandemic.

"What can I do?"

She would normally sea swim all year round, which she says 'invigorates her' and it is only recently that the 'bubble' has extended enough to allow her beach access.

She is hoping to be in Westport to enjoy the 'shortest day' midwinter swim at Carters Beach – all going well…

Good night: baby sleep consultant on West Coast

okitika woman Rachel Evans – the West Coast's first qualified 'baby sleep consultant – is helping families with under-fives get a good night's sleep.

Mrs Evans said she saw a need for the sleep training and support role through her work as a Karitane nurse for Plunket in Hokitika and Greymouth over the past eight years.

"We're the only place in the country that doesn't have a sleep consultant who lives in the area."

She offers home visits – even overnight – or guidance by phone or e-mail on tailored sleep solutions, "because not all babies are text book babies".

Originally from the United Kingdom, where sleep consultancy is big, Mrs Evans studied early childhood and worked in daycare for a year after finishing school before moving into nannying for 18 years.

She had her own children after settling in New Zealand 11 years ago.

"I know from personal experience how hard sleep depravation can be and how hard it is on the whole family and mental health when you don't get enough sleep. A good night's sleep helps everyone. You can see a massive reduction in post-natal depression, which is quite high on the Coast."

Over the past several years Mrs Evans has been studying maternal mental health as well as sleep, nutrition, growth and even baby massage.

She has recently qualified under the baby Sleep Consultants NZ umbrella.

"It's been such an amazing journey and I have thoroughly enjoyed everything I have learned. I feel with the experience I have gained over the many years of looking after children and studying I am well equip to help families enjoy the benefits of their children sleeping well."

Mural colours up Fox Glacier School

uture historians may have a puzzle on their hands when they come to study a new mural at Fox Glacier School.

The mural, which is mounted prominently on the school's corner wall for passing community members and visitors to appreciate, was completed by students recently under the guidance of Dunedin artist Jemima Pedro.

The colourful work of art – which includes a mysterious paw print – was signed on its concealed rear side by all those who contributed their skills.

"Serena, my Norwich Terrier, is our muchloved school dog who comes to school with us every day," Fox Glacier School principal Donna Reader said.

"She's been very good this week while

there's been paint everywhere and a giant wet mural on the floor, so the children felt she should add her paw print to the school's new work of art."

Mrs Reader said the mural depicted the landscapes and legends around both Fox Glacier and neighbouring Bruce Bay, as the school belonged to both communities.

"We have students from around Bruce Bay and right up to Fox Glacier. We wanted a way to bring both our communities closer together and represent the features that are central to everyone's lives in our beautiful corner of the world.

"We have been learning about Maui landing at Mahitahi (Bruce Bay), and also wanted to include this. We're very grateful to Jemima for helping to put all our ideas together in our

After a grant application to the Ministry of Education's 'Creatives in Schools' was declined, the local community had pulled together to fund the project, Mrs Reader said.

"It's typical of the generosity and 'can-do' spirit down here."

One of the school's freshly minted muralists, six-year-old Mingma Sherpa, said he liked the Bruce Bay section of the artwork best.

"I like Maui's waka and the Bruce Bay beach.

When I go there I get an ice cream from the coffee cart and go for walks."

Mrs Reader said she hoped the mural would be a source of community pride during what continued to be a challenging time for the tourist town.

"The mural signifies our strengths:

collaboration, community, and caring for one another together.

"We've all unleashed our inner artists this past week . . . Serena included."

Golden oldies laughs and rugby

he weather was at its best for the annual Reefton Rockbusters Golden Oldies Rugby tournament.

Nine teams with 114 players took part from as far afield as Whangarei Heads to Dunedin, with the eldest player being 70.

There were prizes such as player of the day and d..k of the day. One of the d..k of

the day prizes went to a player who forgot to bring his rugby boots.

"The Golden Oldies motto is Fun, friendship and Fraternity, that's the spirit we play in," one of the organisers Jan Moore said.

Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue were there to fundraise and to support the Roa Mining Rescue Helicopter service, along with entertainment in the form of Graeme Hyde from Christchurch, Wendy Mitchell,

a qualified massage practitioner from Mai Mai, food dished out by Reefton Early Learning Centre.

That evening 170 people were booked in for dinner served at the Reefton Community/War Memorial Hall with the Reefton Fire Brigade catering and doing the bar facilities, then 90 booked in for breakfast at the racecourse tearooms catered by Reefton Area School.

Mary McGill goes solo

W

estport artist Mary McGill has just finished her own exhibition in the former Buller REAP Hall in Lyndhurst Street opposite the Victoria Square skatepark.

'Mary McGill Solo' had been a few years in the planning.

McGill said she finally found a venue that suited. "I have been waiting for the right space to appear and it finally did."

Her oldest piece of art is 35-years-old, having been created in 1986.

"There is a piece in the exhib from most years since then."

A total of 127 pieces were displayed.

"Feedback has been very positive. In the first few days I have sold enough to cover my costs," she said. "Opening night turnout was far more than I expected."

McGill has lived in Westport for 50 years, originating from Christchurch. She started out teaching art at Buller High School. She has been heavily involved in the art scene in Westport for many years, including organising the annual Westport community art exhibition and poetry evenings.

"I work in whatever media I feel like at the time. I paint for myself. I paint because I paint and there is no real other side to it.

Careers & Courses June 2021 we do? o d t a h w d n a P A E What is WestR 13 REAPs were established in the 70’s and 80’s by the then government with the aim of facilitating access to lifelong learning opportunities for people in rural and isolated areas. REAP is Rural Education Activities Programme.

You won’t find a REAP in a big town or city! WestREAP is one of 5 REAPs in the South Island.

We have been around since 1981 and are a not-for profit working in the area of education in Westland and Grey districts. Our area runs from south of Punakaiaki, down to Jackson Bay including the Grey valley and to Otira.

Much of our work is in a brokerage role, connecting learners with learning opportunities in the areas of Early Childhood, Schools and Youth and Adult and Community Education. We aim to fill gaps in education and add value to existing educational initiatives. The work WestREAP does is underpinned by a community led development model.

Some activities on offer for Under 6’s include Melody Makers Music and Movement sessions in various locations, parenting programmes like SPACE and Incredible Years and Greymouth Playgroup. In Schools and Youth we run Leadership Camps, the CACTUS programme and we help with events like Clued Up Kids, Te Ahurei o nga Kura o Te Tai Poutini (West Coast Schools Kapa Haka Festival) and Westland High School’s Matariki festival. We hold the MSD contract for Youth and Young Parent Payment and are currently delivering the ACC funded Mates and Dates Healthy Relationship programme in Coast schools. In the Adult and Community Education area refer to our ad for activities and courses. We also run the West Coast Disability Resource Service and manage The Tindall Foundation funding on the West Coast.

Last year’s Covid-19 lockdown, and ongoing changes in Alert Levels, have given us all a new appreciation for access to fresh, healthy food. It’s fair to say that many of us are now paying a little more attention to our primary sectors and the farming industry in particular.

We’ve all had to re-think the way we live in our communities and, for those of us with a bit of extra time on our hands, there’s been a trend in back-to-basics living. I know farmers themselves really stepped-up their game in terms of supporting their essential workers through the lockdown; they knew the community was relying on them for milk, meat and fresh produce and they continued to deliver. I love the fact that many of them included farm hands in their bubbles, inviting them to join family meals and keeping their spirits up on the farm.

Equally, there’s been a real, growing appreciation of the work farmers do for our country and the importance of primary industries. We don’t really know how the pandemic will affect them long-term, but it’s bound to be significant.

As well as a fresh appreciation of our farmers, it seems many people are keen on the idea of getting back to basics. This has got to be good for us all and there are a few things you can do – no matter where you live – to become a little more self-sufficient.

Backyard producers Anyone with a backyard can grab a shovel and create a vege garden without much fuss. All the better if you have a couple of bits of timber hanging around to build a frame – but really all you need is a patch of dirt. Seeds are easy to grow from scratch and if you’ve got an old potato, leave it to sprout then pop it in the ground and you’re on your way. It’s easy and it truly feeds your mind and soul – as well as helping to feed the family.

Greymouth Agriculture Starts July 2021

Access to fresh, healthy food has been at the forefront of many people’s minds recently and I reckon it’s made many of us think about more about self-sustainability. Just look at how seed companies struggled to keep up with demand just ahead of last year’s lockdown, and there were many reports of garden centres running out of seedlings as we all starting thinking about being a little more self-sustaining.

On the lifestyle block Those who are lucky enough to have a little more space have been truly grateful the past year. As well as using the time to extend vegetable and fruit patches, they can take selfsustainability to the next level by running some animals and producing their own meat. This is a fantastic way to supplement your income and, with a little effort, a small piece of land can become incredibly productive.

Looking to the future We don’t have a crystal ball, but we’ve already seen the closure of borders creating a gap in the employment market for farm staff previously filled by migrant workers. It could well be that farm work becomes an option for people who might not previously have considered it.

Yes, it’s hard work, but it’s hugely fulfilling. You’re outdoors all day, working with animals and creating a healthy lifestyle for yourself and your family. Whatever happens next, I think we’d all benefit from getting back to basics and thinking about a more self-sustaining lifestyle. We’re living in unprecedented – and sometimes scary – times, but I like to think there’s a

little bit of a silver lining to look at.

Entries open for New Zealand River Awards

ntries for the Cawthron New Zealand River Awards are now officially open, with exciting new changes to the award categories and judging criteria in 2021 that will celebrate the efforts and achievements of people who are committed to improving freshwater health in New Zealand.

The Supreme Award, previously called the 'Most Improved River', has been renamed 'Catchment With Most Progress Toward River Health' and is open for entries in 2021.This reflects changes to the judging criteria that make the award category more holistic.

Judge Jim Sinner of Cawthron Institute said the 'Catchment With Most Progress Toward River Health Award' now takes a 'catchment-wide' approach to assessing efforts to improve freshwater health.

"The process of putting together an entry for the NZ River Awards provides people with the opportunity to reflect on their freshwater restoration and management achievements, as well as what still needs to be done," Jim Sinner said.

The award winner was previously selected by judges after analysis of data from the national Land, Air, Water Aotearoa database.

"We've expanded the criteria to emphasise the importance of land users and the wider community working toward clear objectives and linking these to in-stream monitoring to track progress," Jim Sinner said.

Other changes to the awards process include the introduction of a second judge to the Ministry for the

Environment sponsored 'River Story Award' category. Joining category judge Gerard Hutching will be Dr Jane Kitson, a renowned ecologist and environmental scientist from Southland, who will provide a unique perspective based on her background in kaupapa Maori research.

"I am so pleased to be invited to join the judging panel for the River Story Award category – the award celebrates individuals and communities that have made major efforts to improve freshwater health and I know from my own experience the value of these projects in restoring freshwater environments and connecting communities, whanau, hapu and iwi to their awa and each other," Dr Kitson said.

The New Zealand River Awards have been running since 2013 to celebrate the efforts and achievements of people who are committed to improving freshwater health. The objectives of the awards are to:  Improve the health of New Zealand's rivers and streams.  Encourage greater community participation in measuring and reporting water quality.  Highlight the actions being taken to restore freshwater health.

Closing dates for entries in the 'Catchment With Most Progress Toward River Health' award category is July 30, and entries for the Ministry for the Environment sponsored 'River Story Award' category close on July 1.

Buller District Council upgrades on-line service IT just got a whole lot easier to lodge a service request with Buller District Council on-line.

It is also easier to find out how to minimise waste and get information about the council's Reefton Service Centre.

Group manager community services Rachel Townrow said it had created a direct link from the home page to the service request form.

"This makes it easier to find where to lodge service requests. We've also optimised the online form to be user friendly on mobile devices and added the ability to upload photos and files."

Service requests are how residents can alert council to things that need its attention such as leaking pipes, roaming dogs, illegally dumped rubbish, and damage to public facilities.

Website improvements include information about the Reefton Service Centre with navigation provided from the home page.

"The Reefton Service Centre is an important and powerful connection to the Reefton community. Having its own page and a link from the homepage will make it easier to find information about the services offered at council's office in Reefton."

A new Facebook page called Reduce Reuse Refuse Buller has been launched (@RRRBuller).

This page provide steps and information about how to reduce rubbish. Ms Townrow says with the central government increasing charges for handling waste it makes sense to equip the community with tools to minimise waste.

"The less rubbish households produce, the less they will spend on rubbish bags and there will be fewer trips to the transfer stations."

POSSUM GROUND CONTROL - POISON WARNING Vector Free Marlborough Limited wishes to advise that a ground-based possum control operation will be taking place to keep possum numbers under control to prevent the spread of bovine tuberculosis to livestock.

It is important that we keep possum numbers low, as we work towards eradicating TB from New Zealand over the long term. This operation will be conducted as a part of OSPRI’s TBfree programme.

Description of control area The project area is situated in the Upper Taramakau Valley. The lower end of the boundary begins at the Taramakau and Otira River confluence near SH73. The upper boundary end is approximately 3km upriver of Kiwi Hut and 4km downriver of Locke Stream Hut. The area extends 2km up Pfeifer Creek and 1km up Otehake River.

Operation date April 19, 2021 to June 30, 2021 (approximate).

Poisoning methods, poison used and nature of poison • Feratox encapsulated cyanide in the form of a capsule, dyed green/blue, presented with feed-paste or similar attractant contained inside reusable bait stations 130cm above the ground General warning The public are reminded of the danger that toxic baits and possum carcasses pose, particularly to children and dogs.

• Follow advice stated on poison warning signs • Do not touch poison baits, bait stations or traps • Do not touch poisoned possum carcasses • Keep children under strict supervision in the control area • Keep pets under supervision; do not let dogs eat poisoned carcasses Warning signs will be erected at all main public entry points and the public are reminded that it is an offence to remove any of these signs. Please follow the instructions stated on the signs.
