Twenty-two brave/bonkers Reefton people between the ages of six and 60, did the 'Silly Solstice Swim Selebration' in the Inangahua River at 7.30am last

dip

Thursday to mark the Winter Solstice.

There was no frost, but it was still cold nonetheless, and the river was colder still, at 5degC.

There was laughter that segued into sharp intakes of breath, squeals, brrrrrrrs, shrieks, and even a few expletives when the swimmers threw

themselves at the mercy of the Inangahua.

Once back at the Broadway Tearooms to have a coffee, everyone started to de-frost.

“The second you put your head under the water, you get an instant ice-cream headache,” Don MacLean said. “But it was nowhere near as cold as when I did a swim in the Arctic Ocean at

Cape Morris Jesup in Greenland where you'd be dead in two minutes,” he added with a wry smile. Paige Newburry, who organised the event with mum Jo, said she did not mean to go right under.

“I'm not sure if I was pushed or I fell!“ she laughed. It was certainly a bracing way to start the morning.

Artwork transforms telecoms cabinets

Bland telecommunications cabinets across Buller have been turned into lively artworks by talented artists thanks to a partnership between Chorus and the Buller District Council.

Emma Timmis has used her works to celebrate much about Reefton, in particular its history as the first place in New Zealand to have electric light.

“I asked on the local Facebook group what people thought represented Reefton in summer and winter. I then incorporated those ideas into the two cabinets, one showing a summer scene with fantails and the river, and the other a frosty winter scene lit by our famous lantern,” she said.

A school project inspired Westport students from Westport's St Canice's School to promote an important Westland species.

“We had been learning about the importance of longfin eels and how we need to raise awareness about them. These species are endangered, so we wanted an inspiring art piece to help raise the profile of these eels, “ said Bella Riley, on behalf of the team. The students worked with Westport artist Ruth Vaega to complete the work.

Finally. in Brougham Street a scene of jellyfish drifting through space brings an alternative subsea environment to the roadside, the work of artist Toroa Charteris with help from Wendy Currie.

Thrive in Your 70s! Judy Bailey Explains...

KORU NUTRITION

Grandmother and former TV Icon, Judy Bailey, is embarking on a journey to help reshape our perceptions around healthy aging.

Now entering her 70s and being called “Dear” one too many times, Judy has teamed up with New Zealand natural health and nutrition company – Koru Nutrition, to talk to experts, start conversations, and explore the latest research that is making a difference in the field of aging.

“Once you pass 65, people tend to think it’s a downhill slide to the Zimmer frame. But that’s far from the truth; we all age differently. Many of us remain physically active well into our 70s,” Judy shares.

“Being proactive is key to our health and aging.”

Here are three pillars to healthy aging that will help you to be optimistic and proud of getting older:

Diet:

A focus on diet is important to our overall health and wellbeing. Keeping hydrated, eating nutrient-dense foods, and avoiding bad fats to prioritise healthy fats lead

to giving our bodies the best chance to be healthier overall.

Exercise:

If you have seen some clips of my interview with Dr. Daniel O’Brien online, you will know that staying active is like medicine for our bodies.

Walking my dog is now the minimum, and I have been challenging myself to try new things, like stand-up paddle boarding.

Support:

I’ve tried numerous creams and supplements, but I have to say, Koru FX Pro has been revolutionary for me. When I first used it, I was surprised at how fast-acting it was! Also, that I didn’t smell like a rugby dressing room after and the long-lasting support it provided me; I didn’t even need to apply it again that day!

“It is made with natural ingredients (which was a must-have for me to buy it,

let alone endorse! If you’re looking for a deep-absorbing, fast-acting, and long-lasting natural product, harnessing the benefits of natural oils, then Koru FX Pro is for you.”

Remember, it only takes a few minutes to look at your current diet and make changes, see where you might add a little exercise to your day, and get support by popping into your local pharmacy and getting some Koru FX Pro today.

Weather hampers Youth Week B

uller youth had a weekend of activities in conjunction with Youth Voice Kawatiri, Buller REAP and Rising Rangatahi to celebrate national Youth Week.

Tree planting at the Toki Poutangata Bridge in Westport was held late on Friday afternoon.

An environmental day on the Saturday at Carters Beach gave students the chance to explore concepts such as recycling. Inclement weather stopped the Sunday outdoor event planned to coincide with the Carters Beach Market. However, a sausage sizzle and information stall were available. Rising Rangatahi youth worker Tessa Spillane said those who turned out enjoyed the activities, along with the Youth Voice Kawatiri members who helped out.

However, number of factors, including the weather and weekend sport, meant the events were not well attended.

NZ Garden Bird Survey under way

The country's longest running citizen science project, the New Zealand Garden Bird Survey is under way.

Thousands of New Zealanders will be heading into their gardens to spend one hour counting all the birds they see and hear. The survey runs from June 24 to July 2.

Data from the survey helps scientists understand the health of garden bird populations and the wider environment. It does this by showing how bird counts are changing across New Zealand over the past five and 10 years.

Data from last year showed fantail (piwakawaka), tui and kereru are increasing in numbers, and that the decline in silvereye (tauhou) appears to be slowing. Things are not looking so good for some introduced species. Numbers for both starlings (taringi) and chaffinch (pahirini) show a decline.

Manaaki Whenua researcher Dr Angela Brandt says the data helps us understand how bird populations are changing across New Zealand.

“What's exciting about having so many years of surveys now is we can see how trends

are changing over time.

“Some species show an uptick – like piwakawaka, or a lessening decline – like tauhou – compared with earlier reports. Importantly, because the survey is done every year, it gives us an early warning if a species starts to decline.”

The NZ Garden Bird Survey founder, Dr Eric Spurr, says he looks forward to the survey every year and is delighted at the increasing number of people who take part.

“The results show the value of long-term citizen science monitoring, and while the survey does not attempt to determine the causes of changes in bird counts, it is tempting to think increases in counts of native birds reflect the results of increased predator control and habitat restoration activities around the country.”

It turns out however, that doing the survey is not just good news for the birds. In 2020, survey participants were asked about their experience of taking part. Some people talked about how they did not have time to join a conservation or nature group but they liked being part of something that involved thousands of other people who cared about

the same thing -- birds and nature.

Manaaki Whenua social researcher Dr Gradon Diprose says participants in 2022 suggested a wide range of everyday actions that could be taken to care for birds in New Zealand such as reducing the impacts of weeds and predators on birds. The responses highlight how many New Zealanders care both about birds, and the wider environment.

A majority of people also reported a greater sense of well-being after spending time in the garden.

“We had people saying it was a good opportunity to slow down,” says Dr Diprose.

“Participants talked about feeling curiosity, joy, fun, wonder and a sense of connection.”

The New Zealand Garden Bird Survey has become a much-loved pastime for families around the country.

Tv producer Ian McGee who hails from Dunedin started doing the survey when it first began around 2007.

“I really like the idea of being able to track what is in my garden over time,” he says.

“I also had two young children and I wanted a way to encourage them to start identifying

birds, and to use their sharp eyes to spot things I might have missed.

“One of the things I worry about is that because kids are watching wildlife television programmes, they start to think that nature only happens in places like the Serengeti and other exotic places. But really all you need to do is stick your nose out of your window at home and sit and watch.”

Benji Moorhouse, senior adviser kaitohutohu matua intergenerational change at the Ministry for the Environment agrees and says the survey is an opportunity to pause, take notice of an outdoor area near you and start to appreciate all we have in our own 'backyard'.

“The benefits of connecting with nature is something we are hearing more and more about, but many of us still struggle to find that time to really notice the environment around us. With the Garden Bird Survey, you don't have to go anywhere. You can complete it wherever you are.”

There is information on how to take part and plenty of bird identification information on the NZ Garden Bird Survey website, https:// gardenbirdsurvey.nz/

Westport Women's Institute turns 90

n by Rose O'Connor in Westport

WESTPORT Women's Institute celebrated its 90th birthday earlier this month.

Ten members gathered for refreshments and the cutting of a commemorative cake.

The oldest two members, Ngaire Cropp and Ailsa Coghlan, are 90. A third nonagenarian, Isobel Cockfield, passed away recently.

Westport Country Women's Institute (CWI) began on March 28, 1933 with 38 financial members, according to local member and club historian, Mrs Cropp.

CWI later changed names to become known as Women's Institute.

The meetings were initially held on the last Tuesday of each month at Holland Hall. Programmes or agendas were arranged by the members.

“Competitions were to encourage and teach those present, old and new

ideas. What we learnt from each other!“

Mrs Cropp said. Members were also encouraged to speak in front of others.

Members Dorothy Scott and Amy Absolom both received the highest honour in the institute – the Gold Honours Badges for service to the organisation. Another member, Grace Farrell was awarded an MBE and was a Westport Borough councillor and on the hospital board.

Mrs Cropp entered the National Federation Women of the Year in 1988 after gaining first place in Westport and third in Nelson.

Each year, local branches joined together to celebrate their annual birthdays with groups joining in with entertainment items.

Women's Institute provided local women with a rich social calendar. In the past Westport members have attended self-defence classes, helped with care and craft, sold raffle tickets for other

organisations, collected driftwood for Denniston Museum, knitted and sewed for overseas recipients, the neo-natal unit in Christchurch, O'Conor and Kynnersley Homes and early learning centres.

Westport WI members have collected non-perishable food items for Ronald McDonald House, Davidson House, local food banks and provided soup for Meals on Wheels clients during winter.

“We assisted with a public craft day in 2003, with demonstrations and hands-on crafts. We even collected for a National Bra Appeal to provide for schoolgirls in Africa,” Mrs Cropp said.

Members of the Westport WI also lay wreaths at Anzac Day commemorations and in the past, they have entered floats in the local Christmas Parades.

The Westport WI welcomes new members to its meeting which are held in the Union Church rooms in Wakefield Street on the first Tuesday of the month.

Nature photograph receives recognition

Planning for the next 10 years

Westport's Grant Watson received a 'Highly Commended' in a recent photography competition.

The contest was run by the Northern Seabird Trust.

“It was aiming to find out about the tara or white-fronted tern and what they were eating at different times of the year. Photographers had to 'capture' prey in a tara's beak which was later analysed by scientists.”

Mr Watson said he already had a keen fascination for photographing the seabirds and had built up a reasonable collection prior to seeing the competition promoted on Instagram.

“I registered and then sort of forgot about it. The organisers contacted me on the closing date to see if I still intended entering. They had already seen some of the work I had posted on my Instagram account.”

He quickly uploaded some of his photographs.

Mr Watson said he was delighted to be notified of the result.

“It is the first time I have ever entered anything and I was

delighted. I uploaded a few and I was surprised the three renowned wildlife photographers chose that one!”

Hailing from Northern Ireland, Mr Watson said he is now following in his late father's footsteps.

“My father, Ian, was a professional sports photographer. He once photographed a lifeboat leaving Port Rush Harbour in wild seas on a rescue mission. The photograph went worldwide and he even received recognition from Buckingham Palace! I guess you could say, he is my inspiration.”

Mr Watson moved to Westport from the Gold Coast in Australia two years ago as it is his wife's hometown (Felicity, nee Shaw). They have two young daughters.

He previously had his own ecological business on the Gold Coast where he worked for private landowners who had 'significant ecological value' land.

“They received funding and employed me to restore their properties which were critically low-lying endangered rainforest.”

Mr Watson has now set up another business, West Coast Ecological Services. He contracts to DOC to carry out ecological restoration. When work is quiet sometimes over the winter months, the multi-talented man

also uses his carpentry skills to make and sell picnic tables and outdoor furniture. Several pieces now feature on the Kawatiri Coastal Trail.

“I really enjoy photography. I take pride in showcasing the amazing wildlife in this region that people don't always notice. They get to see it through my eyes.”

Mr Watson initially used a bridge camera but upgraded to a professional camera more recently.

“I needed a better shutter speed to capture those wildlife action shots. You have to be patient and to anticipate shots in motion but I don't think that is something that can be taught.”

He regularly posts photographs to various West Coast Facebook pages.

“I post a lot of photos on my Instagram account @birdlifenz – I do a lot of my networking through social media.”

Since the competition result has been posted, Mr Watson has sold five photographs that were displayed at PRs Café in Westport.

“My ultimate dream would be to win the New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year. I will just see where photography leads me and how far I can go with it. So, watch this space!“

WE are starting to work on our longterm plan which sets out everything we intend to deliver over the next 10 years, including the services and activities that we will provide, the projects we will carry out and the level of service the community can expect.

The plan also includes how much we expect things to cost, how we'll pay for them and what this means for rates and debt. When developing the plan, council strives to balance community well-being with what is affordable for our district.

The last LTP that council developed was for 2021-31. Therefore, council will consider the work that was planned for the remaining seven years in the 2021-31 plan and assess whether it is still the right work to deliver for 202434. There have been changes in the last three years, so it is important to assess whether the priorities for the long-term plan are still valid or need to change.

The long-term plan affects everyone in the Grey district. Before developing the draft long-term plan for 2024-34, we wanted to hear from you about

what is important to you and what things contribute to your well-being while living in the Grey district. We wanted to get a feel for what is most important to the community.

The findings from this preengagement period will help council to develop a draft long-term plan for 2024-34 that reflects the needs and aspirations of the community.

The feedback we have looked at so far has been fantastic and thank you to those who took the time to get involved.

We are going to try something new with this LTP. Later in the year, once we have collated this information, we will share the results with you either via our usual electronic channels, in person or through a mail drop.

If you missed this opportunity, we still welcome your input through discussions with your elected members or you can contact us via e-mail, website, or Facebook. If you wish I am available to sit down with you and go through your concerns, private message through Messenger or to make an appointment or email me at mayor@greydc.govt.nz

Once the draft long-term plan 2024-34 has been prepared, there will be a formal consultation period, so everyone has an opportunity to provide feedback. This will happen around April next year. The longterm plan will become operational on July 1, 2024 once it has been adopted by council.

All businesses in New Zealand that supply goods or services should have up-to-trade terms of trade. Terms of trade provide a framework to enable business relationships to function and set out the terms under which parties will buy and sell goods and services. Businesses with welldrafted and easy-to-understand terms of trade have an easier time with the day-to-day running of their business and have a reduced risk for disputes and bad debtors.

Terms of trade should be tailored to the way

Terms of Trade

your business operates, but you should expect your terms to deal with the following basics. Who are the parties? What are the goods or services bring provided? What is the price or how is it determined? How are the goods or services to be delivered? When does ownership of goods pass from you to your customer? Who is responsible for loss or damage? When and how do you get paid? And what penalties are you entitled to impose for late payment?

Recent amendments were made to the Fair

Trading Act 1986 which were effective from 2022. This means some terms of trade may contain unenforceable provisions which could expose your business to fines of up to $600,000 per breach.

If you don't have quality bespoke terms of trade that work with how you do business, or if you would like your terms or other standard form contracts reviewed to ensure that they comply with current law, please contact us at Hannan and Seddon (a division of Corcoran French) to discuss.

Encourage the men in our lives to get that Check Up

July is reminding our blokes to get that check up, It’s about getting men and boys having confidence to talk about their health concerns and ask their mates how they are doing?

Set an example with healthy habits and take charge of your health. Take time for a WOF for yourself, after all, you do with your car!

• Regular exercise can be helpful for improving your mood and reducing the risk of depression. Mix it up, your body gets comfortable when you always do the same workout.

• Take time out, it’ s not wasted time – it renews your energy and can help reduce stress and worry so you feel refreshed.

Certain diseases and conditions may not have symptoms, so it is important to not self-diagnose, or conversely ignore any symptoms. Learn more

about your families’ health history. See your doctor or nurse for a cholesterol and blood pressure checks. Both high cholesterol and high blood pressure can be described as “silent killers”. Eat a well - balanced diet.

• If you a smoker aim to quit, as smoking increases your risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer, and lung disease. Quitting has many health benefits. Sleeping is your most valuable activity of the day. Good sleep enables you to feel more refreshed alert, think and perform better.

Give you Medical Centre a call and make that appointment for your check up, your family will thank you for it.

What should I do if I can’t pay my taxes?

As the economy has just entered into a recession, we are seeing more clients who are unable to pay their taxes by the due date. If you are in this situation, the most important point is to communicate. There are steps that can be put into place to help you pay off your taxes and to minimise your exposure to late payment penalties and interest.

It is also important to question why you cannot pay your taxes and what changes are being made to ensure you have sufficient cashflow in the future. Without understanding what caused the issue, the problem tends to be compounded.

If the issue is around the timing of when

Provisional Tax is due, we use Tax Management New Zealand – TMNZ, who allow you to pay your tax in the future, but within 75 days after your terminal tax being due. There is a finance cost charged but TMNZ’s interest rate is less than Inland Revenue’s and the payment is backdated in IRD’s system, saving you late payment penalties.

Another option is to enter into a payment arrangement with Inland Revenue. Generally speaking, Inland Revenue stop charging late payment penalties if you keep up with the arrangement.

If you are facing severe financial hardship,

Inland Revenue may provide relief and write off some of the taxes owing off. It is quite a lengthy process to apply for relief and you will need to provide detailed financial information and supporting documents about your business and personal situation. There is no blanket write off and each situation will be looked at on its own merits.

While it seems like a burden to pay off taxes when you are in financial difficulty, ultimately if you face it head on rather than burying your head in the sand, your outcomes are likely to be more favourable to you. If you need any assistance, contact your accountant.
