Reefton scores soccer tournament

T

he weather was perfect for the 'beautiful game' played for the annual Reefton Senior Soccer Invitation Shield, held at the historic home of Reefton Football on The Strand.

Well, most of the games were played there as the first two rounds were played at Reefton Area School due to The Strand ground possibly getting torn up and muddy. This arrangement was less than ideal from a shopkeeper's perspective, as the players, officials and spectators were too far away, therefore not having enough time between games to come into Broadway to buy their lunches from any of the cafes or to spend money in any other shops.

But a great weekend's football was had with six teams participating – Reefton, Trojans, Stags, Woolston, Nelson and Squires.

Team Reefton was fearless and took no prisoners, with Fox de Oliveira scoring the first goal 15 minutes into the game, with lots of other mad ball skills on show throughout.

The final score was 3-5 to the Richmond Stags, notwithstanding the good natured harassing and booing of the referee about a couple of (what the spectators thought) dubious calls to which he good naturedly gave the two-finger salute in return.

One player said: "We love coming to this tournament, and we get bestowed with temporary Reefton citizenship for the weekend."

Tournament organizer Dave Trowbridge thanked the local Rose Wistrand of Reefton warming up for the game.

'Queen of boogie piano' to play Greymouth, Hokitika WITH Sydney Covid-19 cases spiralling daily, New Zealand expat Jan Preston relocated home via Queensland as they escaped the virus looking for places to perform.

From Auckland to Wellington and the West Coast, Preston is now ready to return to her beloved South Island (she is originally from Greymouth) for the release her latest CD Piano Boogie Woman.

Preston's uplifting brand of virtuoso boogie piano will rattle the cobwebs from some of the forgotten pianos tucked away in venues from Hokitika to Nelson, Invercargill and more with 20 dates across the month-long visit starting in Motueka on Thursday, September 23 and finishing up over Labour Weekend, October 24 in the Wairau Valley.

Publicists say audiences will be bopping along to her characteristically energetic playing, sultry blues voice and candid humour as she airs her latest songs together with some old boogie/blues favourites.

Jan Preston's early career began in New Zealand with the 1980 hit band Coup D'Etat. Winner of five music awards, she also composes music for film and tv.

She will be joined by Mike Pullman on percussion in this duo performance .

Preston is known as Australasia's 'queen of boogie piano', her recent CD release 'Boogie Woman' from October 2020 bears testament to that.

She is a magnetic live performer and astonishing piano player with a rich resonant voice. Her original songs, compositions and mastery of

boogie-woogie captivate audiences at festivals and in concerts around the world.

"Our family had little resources or opportunity, but I grew up in an era where people would gather around the piano and sing together. From when I was very young I played piano while everybody sang along or played tea chest basses, eggbeaters, combs, violins, even an old saxophone.

"I had an auntie who played honky tonk style, and heard Winifred Atwell along with early rock n roll on our old Columbus Radio in the kitchen.

Playing piano from the moment I could reach the keys, and being spurred on by my older sister and brother who both played, I studied classical very seriously, becoming a star student, passing all my grades with distinction and gaining a very prestigious place (one of four students from the whole of NZ) to study a five-year classical piano degree at Auckland University."

In 1980 her band, Coup D'Etat had a No 1 hit with the song Doctor I Like Your Medicine, and Preston moved across the Tasman to Sydney, playing in bands and piano bars as well as writing music for films.

It was some years later before she found her own voice, as a boogie piano player and songwriter.

Jan Preston will be at the Regent Theatre in Greymouth on Thursday, October 14, 7pm to 9.15pm, and the Regent Theatre in Hokitika on October 15.

West Coast trout fisheries in top shape

This eight-pound beauty was caught on a West Coast lake last week, with the angler also catching and releasing other large, well-conditioned fish.

T

he 2021-22 trout fishing season started on October 1 for the West Coast region, which is the opening of all waters and the 'summer' season.

Fish and Game officer Baylee Kersten said: "The West Coast trout fisheries are in top condition, ready for the start of the new season following a few years of ideal feeding conditions over summer, followed by stable, productive spawns over the

winter period."

"Fieldwork last season, whether it be fish surveys in the form of drift dives or electric fishing, to angler reports during compliance rounds, there was one common theme. That being there is some great fishing to be had!

"Keen anglers have already been out making the most of the longer days at some of our winter fisheries that remain open year-round. Early reports suggest

the trout are in superb condition and have recovered well from winter spawning.

"With no shortage of fish or water for that matter, the West Coast region is looking forward to seeing another year of high numbers of visiting anglers from neighbouring regions."

"If you're intending on heading out from tomorrow onwards, be sure to check you are carrying your new 2021-22 season licence to keep compliance checks quick and easy."

Prince Charles donates to Westport NEWS of the flood event which hit Westport hard in the middle of July made it to Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.

Their Royal Highnesses responded by making a donation through the Prince of Wales's Charitable Fund to the Buller District's Mayoral Relief Fund to assist

flood affected residents.

Buller District Mayor Jamie Cleine said: "It is very thoughtful of them to contribute to the Mayoral Relief Fund. The fund directly assists flood affected residents, some of whom have lost everything and will be unable to return home for an extended period of time. I have thanked His Royal Highness the Prince of

Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall for their generosity on behalf of our community."

The Prince of Wales visited Westport in November 2015 when he charmed the crowds with a walk along the main street and visited the West Coast Brewery to sample the beer and whitebait patties, which he described as a perfect match.

Hokitika nurse recognised for commitment to oncology and palliative care THE 2021 New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) Award for Service to Nursing or Midwifery has gone to a longterm former Hokitika nurse.

Cheryl Hutchison was a long-term advocate and nurse leader in Hokitika. She joined NZNO in 1965 when it was known as the Nurses Association. A leader from the start, she took up the role of clinical nurse manager shortly after joining the staff of the

old Westland Hospital in Hokitika.

Since that time she has been active in the NZNO Westland regional council, including being the regional representative on the NZNO board.

Mrs Hutchison's professional interests led her to help introduce dedicated oncology and palliative nurses to the area, something her nominators emphasised as having a significant impact on the under-resourced

rural region. Her nominators commended her deep sense of responsibility to these new nursing roles.

She retires this year and her nominators say she will be missed, but take her advocacy as a challenge to be the voice of change for the West Coast.

This award recognises nurses or midwives who have made a difference to their area of practice at a national level.

Tinker treasures from junk

A

new exhibition was hosted at Torea Gallery and Studio in Granity.

It was the first solo exhibition for Granity's Mary BeldeVere with her 'Tinker's Trades and Crafty Craft' collection.

Ms BeldeVere said her art is made from 'salvaged scrap, junk and jewels' that she finds, is given or buys from second-hand shops.

"I love taking one's junk and making it into another's treasure."

She describes herself as 'self-taught although she said she is blessed to have worked among many creative people over the years including on movies sets, in wardrobe and theatre, with master crafters, photographers and glass blowers.

More recently Ms BeldeVere has had lessons on crafting metals by Pat Cooper of Waimangaroa, Chris Serfurt from Karamea and the late Ron from Granity.

"I love working with metals especially copper which is much softer."

However, with young children, she said it is more difficult to do that work right now.

"Hopefully, one day I will have a studio which I open by privately arrangement," she said. "A lot of my work has to be done when my two-year-old is asleep."

As a child, Ms BeldeVere said she had a passion for crafts and was always checking craft books out of the library.

"My parents were both teachers but they were 'hippies.' Mum taught us how to dye sheep's wool using lichens. It wasn't until later as an adult that I took up art again."

Ms BeldeVere is pleased with how her exhibition has come together.

Although she had started many of the pieces in the past, she has only recently completed them in time for the exhibition. Many pieces had sold already and she has been commissioned to complete another.

"Feedback has been very positive.

People seem to like the uniqueness of my work," she said.

In the past, Ms BeldeVere has had a piece exhibited in the Steam Punk Museum in Oamaru.

"Queen Elizabeth I spent 18 months on their mantelpiece."

She also received a highly commended three years ago in the Bay Art Exhibition in Golden Bay with her artwork 'Dancing Diva.'

Ms BeldeVere said an art teacher had once called her Tinkerbell.

"I compared myself with everyone else and I didn't think I was very good. However, I believe we can achieve whatever we set out to. It just happens I see a lot of armour, spirit, and masculine and feminine energy in the form of folklore when I look upon the scrap heap," she said.

"I find my art fun. I look at a piece and it makes me laugh – the silliness and playfulness of it," she said.

However, copper is the direction Ms BeldeVere sees her art journeying next.

'Lamp' is for lighting, essential oils or a jewellery stand.

'Piggy' has feminine charm.

Mountains meet rainforest – Reefton gin and snow

R

eefton Distilling Co, producers of New Zealand's fastest growing premium gin, continue to surprise with their innovation and entrepreneurial spirit. "Falling snow captures the volatile organic compounds in the surrounding air and environment, and so becomes a composition and reflection of the local landscape."

Waiting for just the right moment to release this first in New Zealand product, this limited edition, Little Biddy Gin Snow will be released in 2022, however a teaser is included in the Reefton Distilling Co Christmas advent calendar, due for release next month.

Westland District Council says no to 3 waters reform WESTLAND District Council firmly rejected reforming the structure of three waters in Westland at their meeting last week, based on the current information available from Government, but left the door open to further consideration of the matter if more specific information becomes available.

All councils around New Zealand had eight weeks to consider the proposal, the effects on their business and communities and provide feedback to the Government about their proposal.

"When we spoke to our community, the majority was very strongly against the three waters reform, and we will be communicating that to the Government," Westland Mayor Bruce Smith said.

"The key reasons that people want us to opt-out are:  Submitters wanted three water services managed, built and operated locally, by people who understand the area.  Submitters don't believe the reform will improve efficiencies.  There were concerns their community won't have a strong democratic say in how their three waters services are provided.  The community is concerned their rates will fund upgrades in other areas.

"As councillors, we have made a commitment to listen to the community and take their lead in things that matter to them. The amount of feedback that we received about the reform shows that this is something that matters very much to Westland residents.

"Alongside that, councillors are not convinced that the proposed model provides the best outcomes for our district and this was why we unanimously voted for Cr Martin's notice of motion against opting-in. We know that neither the council nor the community have enough information to make a fully informed decision based on what the Government has told us so far.

"Our analysis has not proved the benefits that the Government claims and we need more detail before we could confidently say that this proposal would benefit our communities. Based on that, we would seek to opt-out of the reform if a decision is required by the Government."

To protect great spotted kiwi in the Western Paparoa Ranges the Department of Conservation (DOC), Buller/Kawatiri, intends to carry out predator control over 43,843ha of public conservation land.

(Refer to the application area on map).

Description of the area The Paparoa Ranges are home to many of New Zealand’s iconic taonga species. In the Punakaiki and surrounds this includes great spotted kiwi, whio, kaka, kea and a host of other key native species.

The operational area is located in the forested areas east of Punakaiki township on the western side of the Paparoa Range and includes the Punakaiki, Pororari and Nile/Tiropahi river catchments.

Why we are doing predator control Predation by rodents and stoats causes threatened native species such as kiwi to decline - and in some cases our most important vulnerable native taonga face local extinction. DOC’s species monitoring shows nine out of ten kiwi chicks die before the reach breeding age. A 2017 study in the Northern Paparoa Range found that 100% of great spotted kiwi chicks were killed by stoats.

A study of great spotted kiwi chick survival in Kahurangi National Park has shown that aerial 1080 operations significantly increase kiwi chick survival up to 70%. There is higher kiwi chick survival for two seasons after 1080 use.

Predator control works In the Punakaiki area, the Department of Conservation is carrying out predator control to protect great spotted kiwi and many other native species from rodent and stoat predation over 43,843ha.

This will improve breeding opportunities for our taonga species and allow their young to reach adulthood.

Method of predator control DOC has worked closely with its Treaty Partner Ngati Waewae on desired outcomes and consulted with stakeholders and the community. Between October 6, 2021 and December 1, 2021 DOC and Vector Control Services will apply baits containing biodegradable 1080 over the area shown on the map. A pre-feed of non-toxic baits will occur first which will prime the rodents to eat the pellets.

The toxic cereal bait pellets contain 0.15% of 1080, are cylindrical and approximately 2cm in diameter. They are dyed green to deter birds and contain a cinnamon lure to attract rodents.

Non-toxic pre-feed cylindrical pellets are approximately 2cm in diameter and sandy coloured (notdyed).

The aerial operation uses calibrated buckets and GIS mapping technology to ensure bait drops in the designed area. Please see map attached.

The pesticide is poisonous to humans and domestic animals. Always remember: • DO NOT touch or eat the bait • WATCH CHILDREN at all times • DO NOT EAT animals from this area • Toxic baits are carcasses are DEADLY TO DOGS Observe these rules whenever you see warning signs placed at the public access ways in the above areas. Warning signs indicate that pesticide residues may still remain in baits and carcasses, possibly for more than six months.
