One place, two faiths, three Bishops I

The rare sight of three bishops together on the West Coast Anglican Bishop of Christchurch Right Reverend Peter Carrell, left, Maori Anglican Bishop of Te Waipounamu (South Island) Right Reverend Richard Wallace and Catholic Bishop of Christchurch Most Reverend Paul Martin at the Jacobs River Church memorial near Bruce Bay. PICTURE: Paul Madgwick

n a first for the West Coast, three bishops gathered at Makaawhio/Jacobs River to celebrate and bless a memorial on the land where Maori and different faith groups have worshipped. The memorial was dedicated on Saturday, exactly two years after ex-tropical Cyclone Fehi on February 1, 2018 destroyed St Peters Anglican Church, latterly known as Our Lady of the River Catholic Church. Anglican Bishop of Christchurch, Bishop Peter Carrell, whose jurisdiction includes Westland said it was a significant celebration and standing alongside his brothers and sisters in faith including Maori Bishop Richard Wallace and local iwi, and Catholic Bishop of Christchurch Paul Martin was a special moment. “In the 1930s local Anglicans built and furnished St Peter’s here on land gifted by local Maori. Then later, Catholics also made use of it. While the building no longer exists, all three groups have strong connections to this place,” Bishop Peter said. “The decision was made to create a sacred and special wayfaring space that people of all faiths and none, could come to for quiet and peace, and to wonder at God’s beautiful creation so evident here on the West Coast,” he said. The commemoration and dedication was co-hosted by Bishop Richard Wallace, Anglican Maori Bishop for the South Island and Upoko of local tangata whenua, Ngati Mahaki ki Makaawhio, who joined him in welcoming everyone to the site in

preparation for the service. “Te Haumaru Makaawhio will continue to draw people to this place, as it has today and as it always has. Its rich history which wove together Maori, Anglican and Catholic strengthens the aspirations we have that this place continues to provide a safe haven,” Bishop Richard said. From the early 1980s the Catholic Parish of South Westland held a monthly Mass there, dedicating the small church to Our Lady of the River. Bishop Paul Martin, whose jurisdiction also covers Westland said it was a delight to be joining the other Bishops with the people at a place of prayer and a symbol of faith for the area. “The fact that this was shared by different Christian denominations is a sign of hope and reflects our continued desire to work together for the spread of the Good News of Jesus Christ,” Bishop Martin said. Ngati Mahaki ki Makaawhio artist, Fayne Robinson, installed a carved stone sourced from Mahitahi/Bruce Bay, etched with kōwhaiwhai representing the local iwi and their connection to the land, which was blessed as part of the service. Westland Anglican priest, Rev Vivien Harber, was quietly pleased it all fell into place after several attempts to get the site blessed, but thwarted by storms, floods and road closures. “I hope this wayside oasis will be a great pleasure to many, both locals and visitors, as they sit and enjoy this space.”

Reefton court in the act

Ray Chandler serving Felix Pickering, alias Carrig (these crooks even have aliases to try and escape detection).

by Claire Ward

R

eefton is once again struggling with a plethora of lawless individuals who, despite being educated (well, some of them finished high school supposedly) professionals and therefore ought to know better, are being hauled into court to answer to their diabolical crimes. And despite them all thinking they were clever clogs who would never be caught, it was easy as following footprints in snow. The Reefton Operatic and Repertory Society is back with its show Court in the Act. It is all larger than life.

Upon receiving their summons’, some of the accused feigned shock, turned on the crocodile tears (glycerin was used in that instance) and tried to make out butter wouldn’t melt in their mouths — it did. All affectations were brushed aside with “the accused doth protest too much, methinks!” response. One miscreant even tried to leg it by driving away, so his car keys had to be taken out of the ignition, and he nearly ended up with an electronic monitoring device around his ankle. That didn’t eventuate as he said his wife was his “ball and chain”, so that was deemed sufficient albeit somewhat harsh.

Come the court date, the judicial officers (who are a bit shady themselves) will brook no argument when it comes to any protestations of “I didn’t do it!”, and will follow their usual crooked path of judging them all guilty until proven innocent. Because everyone knows two wrongs make another wrong, right? So come along to watch the ruthless criminals squirm in the dock trying to worm their way out of their crimes by any and all means possible, blatant bribery, which is acceptable, incompetence, and in all probability verdicts of guilty for all. If you want an afternoon of hilarity,

entertainment and utter nonsense, Sunday, February 9 is the date, 2pm is the starting time, $5 is the entry fee (which is to be donated to the Australian animals caught in the bush fires), and Reefton’s Courthouse on Bridge Street is the place. (None of the criminals or judicial officers are related to this reporter, despite her believing nepotism is perfectly acceptable in any court of law, or in this case court of farce, but she will accept bribes from them for a favourable write up of their proceedings in the next Messenger. If the bribes are substantial enough, I will even lie like a flatfish which is what everyone else will be doing.)

Greymouth to host rose show by Brendon McMahon Greymouth is set to host the 40th Ranfurly Rose Show over the second weekend of February. The Ranfurly Rose, the annual show for South Island rose societies, has been hosted by the Westland Rose Society every three years for the past 40. Show co-organiser Margaret Hyde, of Taylorville, said this year’s show promised to be a great exhibition of the best offerings from Westland rose growers and exhibitors from across the South Island. “They love coming to the Coast.” The three-day event begins on the evening of February 7 with the show of entries after independent adjudication being opened to the public on Saturday, from 1pm to 4pm for a gold coin donation.

Overall, the weekend event for rose aficionados will sit aside from the serious business of showing roses at their best, and will include a garden ramble, a dinner and guest speaker Gillian Vine, a longstanding garden columnist including for the Greymouth Star. Mrs Hyde said eight different rose societies would be attending and entering 12 classes of rose split across large and miniature for the Ranfurly Rose, while a non-Ranfurly competition, Scenic Westland, depicting ‘Westland at its best’ would be a feature. Despite the variable weather this summer “there definitely will be beautiful blooms,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity to come and look at the best roses from the South Island — it will be a good show.”

Westland Rose Society members Stan Hyde, left, Judy Marsh, Margaret Hyde, Penny Hodson and Shirley Almond are set for a blooming good show.

Nathan chose to learn to drive, to provide and promote proper disposal of waste in the community and fitness. “When Nathan become eligible for a benefit, he decided to work towards paying it back by doing something for the community. He began beach clean-ups,” Toni-Lee said. The Buller District Council got on board and now provides him with bags and equipment to ensure his safety while helping him to achieve his goal. Nathan achieved his learner’s licence and is working on his restricted licence, with the help of his parents’ lessons. He continues to volunteer at DOC, as well as at the Westport Refuse Station where he helps to sort recyclable waste. Nathan’s fitness skill sees him walking local bush tracks, cycling and attending the gym and swimming twice a week through Halberg Trust funding. Nathan’s final adventurous journey involved attending a specially adapted Outward Bound, eight day ‘Activate’ course for over 18-year-olds, which they sourced funding for through WINZ. It involved sailing, confidence courses and spending two nights alone in the bush. It is designed to break participant’s own pre-conceptions of their physical limitations and to push their boundaries. Nathan said it was an amazing experience. He has nearly completed gold and he is very grateful to all the people and organisations who have helped him on his journey. Once finished, he is hoping to get some more part time work to go with what he currently does. “He already mows the lawns of most of the neighbours in the street, but he’d be happy to get more lawn mowing or to give something else a go,” Toni-Lee said.

Anderson Trust. The Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Awards are for 14 -24 years olds and involves three specific sections — voluntary service, skills and physicalrRecreation. Activities are selected to work on, as well as an ‘adventurous journey.’ There are three levels — bronze, silver and gold. ToniLee helped him with the skills which were then signed off by the trust. His activities included volunteering at the Department of Conservation, cooking and teaching himself to ride a bike. Toni-Lee said he polished off bronze in about five months. He then moved on to work on silver which his parents said he found more challenging. They discovered Manawanui selfdirected funding and employed support worker Debbie Coleman to help. He mowed lawns and gardened, adapted a fishing rod and learned to fish which contributed food for his family. He also learned to hunt. He chose Spirit of Adventure rd th 3 to 9 February 2020 and sailing around the Abel Tasman for his ‘adventurous Fresh NZ Skin On Chicken journey,’ with some funding Breast Fillets from Halberg Trust and providing the rest himself. He gained a lot of independence and self-discovery through kg the experience. His silver was achieved. Nathan is now working towards finishing his gold, under the guidance of locals Silvia and Justin Blacklock.

estport’s Nathan Page is always up for a challenge. The 20-yearold is nearing the completion of his gold Duke of Edinburgh Award but he has had to overcome major obstacles to get to this point. Nathan was born with Cerebral Palsy which dad Jake describes in layman’s terms as damage to ventricles in the brain at birth,

which control movement. In Nathan’s case, the damage to the left ventricle has resulted in movement difficulties to the right hand side of the body. He has had major operations on his right leg and arm to give him better motion. He also wears hearing aids in both ears. Nathan started at Buller High School in 2014. At this time, his mother Toni-Lee managed to enrol him in the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme through a Christchurch provider — Helen

Meet a kiwi T

he fenced kiwi crèche at Atarau in the Grey Valley, is holding its annual open day on Sunday, February 16. Ray Beckford, from the Paparoa Wildlife Trust, said people would be able to see a great spotted kiwi get its health check. In turn they are requested to make a $5 donation to the trust. There are currently four kiwi in the fenced off area, with three large enough now for release into the wild before the end of February. They have to reach 1.5kg — big enough to fend off predators. There are about 14,000

great spotted kiwi, left, but Mr Beckford said no one knew if they were breeding successfully. No one was even sure exactly how long lived they were. The worry is that many of the birds are older. The mast this year has made it a tough year for the Paparoa birds. The trust has 1300 traps in the hills and has never caught so many rats, stoats and weasels. The crèche is now more than a decade old. People attending the open day should turn up Shellback Road, and be there by 11am. There is a walk of about 0.5 to 1km, though the bird will be in a relatively accessible spot.

George the kiwi from Atarau. An open day at the Bois Gentil kiwi crèche will be held this month.

In the 18 months to December, 29,000 trees have been planted at the site. The project started in 2009 when the Department of Conservation and Conservation Volunteers NZ reached an agreement to re-plant 75ha of coastal land previously used for mining the mineral Ilmenite and for grazing cattle. The land has been gazetted as the Te Ara Taiko Nature Reserve. In 2018, it received funding from the Billion Trees programme to plant 179,000 native trees by June 2021. Prior to this about 170,000 trees had been planted during more than 16,000 volunteer days. The Conservation Volunteers work with community groups and schools to plant trees, creating a mountain to sea forest corridor. To register, please contact Annie Inwood on 0800 373118 or e-mail ainwood@cvnz.org.nz

fter 11 years, the transformation of the former ilmenite mine site on the Barrytown Flat is about to mark the 200,000th tree planting. Conservation Volunteers NZ leads the ambition project, which has ramped up in the past 18 months. Conservation officer Annie Inwood said planting of the 200,000th tree would be celebrated with a community event on Tuesday, February 11 from 10am to 2pm. Barrytown School, which had been so instrumental to the project, would attend, along with the wider public and officials from the Ministries for Primary Industries and Social Development, and Department of Conservation. A commemorative plaque will be place, and there will certificates for all the volunteers and celebratory cake. “We would love for the community to come along.”

SUPER RUGBY 2020 National list MP Maureen Pugh

I

am hoping that everyone is back for the 2020 year after a rest and some great family times over the festive season. For me, the season of A and P shows and outdoor events is a great time to catch up with people and to enjoy town meeting country with the ‘colour’ of our rural communities coming to the fore. Whilst the bio-security concerns have currently ruled out many of the animals attending, horses, dogs, miniature ponies and other domestic pets have certainly made up for it. And so we proceed into the 2020 election year with the big decision day plus two referenda set

down for Saturday September 19. Issues that matter to the Coast, like access to DOC land, windthrown trees or whitebait issues have not gone away and they will become the key topics of debate in the run-up to decision time. On the whitebait scene, I am relaxed about the rest of the country coming into line with our season, but any proposal for closing a river for 10 years without good science to support it will be a mistake. In my role as an MP, people approach me with their predictions for an election result. Naturally, I am under no illusion that the West Coast is a Labour stronghold, but with the way the coalition Government’s policies have affected the region in the last three years, I hope that people are ready for positive change. The huge turnout for the rally on November 17 was an indication. The recent announcements about billions of dollars being spent around the country saw little coming to the South Island, and nothing coming to the West Coast. If it wasn’t for the Ahaura Bridge replacement, announced and funded by National in 2017, there would be no major road projects happening here at all. We deserve better. Being appointed to the new role of West Coast Issues spokesperson (for National) put a real focus on matters important to Coasters. You can be assured that I will continue to back the Coast 100 percent and I will continue to call out the Government on any decisions that threaten our regional viability. If you have any issues of or concerns in any aspect of what this coalition Government has planned, please contact my office and I will get back to you. I am happy to make house calls. In reality, the Coast cannot afford this Government. National has a strategy to make a better job of the economic progress everyone will benefit from.

Tuia challenge this Waitangi Day ALL New Zealanders are invited to accept the Tuia challenge this Waitangi Day 2020. Tuia 250 co-chairs Dame Jenny Shipley and Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr say while the Tuia 250 Voyage is complete, the challenge it posed continues. “Last year’s national commemoration Tuia 250 acknowledged that for many of us our understanding of New Zealand history has been unbalanced. Tuia 250 provided an exceptional opportunity to begin a journey to put that right,” Dame Jenny said. “During Tuia 250, thousands of people learnt more about the discovery of Aotearoa by Pacific voyagers, the reality of what happened between Māori and the Endeavour crew with the arrival of James Cook, and gained new insights and a more balanced understanding of the first encounters between Maori and Pakeha in many places around New Zealand.” The voyage also prompted many people to consider how their family voyaged to New Zealand. Dame Jenny and Mr Barclary-Kerr said every New Zealand family shoulc consider their journey this Waitangi Day and to be open to the stories of others so the nation can celebrate the dual heritage it shares.

They said Tuia aided the understanding that all New Zealanders are bound together, precious and different but part of our nation with a shared responsibility to build a future together. The pillars of Tuia 250 — ‘dual heritage’ and ‘shared future’ — were a useful concept to facilitate conversations about the commitments made by those signing the Treaty of Waitangi and what that meant for New Zealanders today, the Tuia 250 cochairs said. “Understanding those first encounters, both good and bad, is essential so we can understand what happened 171 years later when a treaty was required to agree how Maori and Pakeha would move forward together. This led to the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and the colonial settlement of New Zealand,” Dame Jenny said. “The Treaty is part of our dual heritage, our history, and our story as a nation. Many New Zealanders welcome the fact that our young people will soon learn about New Zealand’s history and the Treaty in the classrooms of every school. “As we approach Waitangi Day we invite all New Zealanders to consider what their personal ‘Tuia Challenge’ is in celebrating their own history and being curious about that of other New Zealanders.”

LAWSON ENGINEERING LIMITED

KAHURANGI PREDATOR CONTROL OPERATION Vector Free Marlborough Limited (VFML) wishes to advise the public of its intention to aerially apply the toxin Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080) for the purpose of controlling rats and stoats in the Wangapeka - Owen treatment area between February 10 and April 30, 2020. The Wangapeka - Owen operation is part of the wider Kahurangi project which commenced in May 2019. Operations in the Cobb, Heaphy - Gunner and Oparara - Grange blocks elsewhere in the project area were completed during 2019. The Kahurangi project is being carried out by VFML on behalf of the Department of Conservation (DOC) to protect vulnerable native species from introduced predators following a heavy mast (seeding) event in forests. Treatment Area The Wangapeka - Owen treatment area takes in approximately 93,697 hectares and includes public land managed by the Department of Conservation as well as several small areas of legal road. Boundaries extend from Garibaldi Range in the north, to the top of the Owen Valley in the south. The western boundary is loosely defined by the Fenian Range, Stormy Ridge, Radiant Range, Allen Range, Matiri Range and Bald Knob Ridge. To the east, the boundary follows part of the Lookout and Arthur ranges before joining the northern boundary in the Leslie River catchment. The area takes in the catchment of many waterways, with the most notable being the Karamea, Little Wanganui, Owen and Wangapeka rivers. Note, some areas may not receive control. Maps are available from the VFML website, the DOC website (https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/things-to-do/hunting/ pesticides/) and may also be viewed by appointment at DOC offices in Motueka, St Arnaud, Takaka and Westport during business hours from Monday to Friday. Public Access and Recreational Facilities Public access to the treatment area is provided by the Wangapeka River Road, as well as a large number of back-country tracks and associated facilities managed by DOC. Affected roads and tracks in the various blocks will be closed to public access while the aerial application of toxic baits takes place, and afterwards until field staff have inspected for and removed most toxic baits. Roads and tracks will be open during non-toxic prefeed application, but access restrictions may be in place for short periods of time. Huts and other back-country accommodation will generally be excluded from bait application during the application of toxic bait to each block, although a number of very low-use sites may be over-sown subject to occupancy and consent conditions, in which case VFML field operatives will be onsite to inspect for and recover toxic baits from open areas afterward. Affected DOC managed accommodation facilities such as huts and shelters in the treatment area will be provided with alternative drinking water supplies in accordance with Public Health Permit conditions while the application of toxic bait is carried out. Warning signage and access barriers will be in place at all track entrances while the application of toxic bait takes place, and DOC and/or VFML representatives may be stationed at a number of key sites to control access and provide information to visitors. Advisory signage will be installed at key sites prior to non-toxic prefeed application. Commencement Date The Wangapeka - Owen operation is scheduled to commence from February 10, 2020, beginning with the aerial application of nontoxic cereal pre-feed pellets and followed five or more days later by the aerial application of cereal pellets containing 1080. All work is weather dependent and people intending to visit the affected area before April 30, 2020 are advised to check the VFML website for the status of the operation and/or seek up-to-date information from the DOC website and local DOC offices. Bait Description Pre-feed: Non-toxic cereal based pellet, approximately 20mm long, cinnamon-lured and non-dyed (light brown/fawn in colour). Toxic bait: Cereal based pellet, approximately 20mm long, cinnamon-lured and dyed green with a toxic loading of 0.15% Sodium fluoroacetate (1080). All bait will be applied using helicopters equipped with Global Positioning System (GPS) hardware to ensure accurate placement and adherence to consent conditions. Precautions This pesticide is poisonous to human and domestic animals. The public are reminded of the danger that toxic baits and possum carcasses pose, particularly to children and dogs. Children should be kept under strict supervision in the treatment area. Dogs should be kept under strict control at all times and not have access to, or be taken into the treatment area as they are particularly susceptible to accidental poisoning through contact with 1080 bait and poisoned carcasses. The risks of poison carcasses to dogs may extend downstream of the control area. Game animals should not be sold or taken for eating from within or adjacent to this area until it is declared clear of pesticides. Warning signs will be erected at all main public entry points and the public are reminded that it is an offence to remove any of these signs. Warning signage will remain in place until monitoring indicates that bait and carcasses no longer contain pesticide residues. Observe the following precautions whenever you see toxin warning signs present: • DO NOT touch bait • WATCH CHILDREN at all times • DO NOT EAT animals from this area • DEADLY TO DOGS, do not allow dogs access to animal carcasses If you suspect poisoning Contact your local hospital, or dial 111 National Poisons Centre 0800 POISON - 0800 764 766 In the case of a domestic animal being poisoned, contact a local veterinarian For further information please contact the Kahurangi Operation Controller: Vector Free Marlborough Limited Private Bag 1007, Blenheim 7240 Freephone: 0508 548 008 E-mail: communications@vectorfree.co.nz Web: http://vectorfree.co.nz/current-aerial-operations.html Vector Free Marlborough Limited (VFML) is proud to work alongside the Department of Conservation to deliver the 2019/20 Kahurangi project. The art of books M

ichelle Sandford of Westport has combined her passion for books, art and craft to produce personalised journals and books. She has begun selling her Homeward Bound Journals and Olde Bookes through her on-line book store. “They are a one-of-a-kind handcrafted book using recycled materials. Basic ones can take as little as a day but themed can take a couple of weeks,” Mrs Sandford said. She began creating journals about six years ago, having produced over 100 books in that time. It is clearly a labour of love. Mrs Sandford says the books are for “anyone looking for that something a little bit different locally”.

Prior to Christmas she had a stock of about 40 ready and also makes on request. Many of her ideas for the books have been gleaned in watching television. “The old book props on fantasy programmes intrigue me so I You Tube and search ‘Pinterest’ and just go from there.” All manner of materials are sought for the books including from art and craft shops and op shops. She also runs a virtual book shop on-line to sell out of print books. “Homeward Bound Book Shoppe sells second hand books to mainly home schoolers around New Zealand. I like to seek out hard to find and out of print books. My handmade books and journals sell through here as well.”

Wasps buzz off with more trees Book crafter Michelle Sandford with an example of her work.

Lush forest cover and limited human habitation mean fewer invasive wasps, new research on New Zealand offshore islands shows. A study on 36 islands off the east coast of the North Island has found low numbers of invasive wasps on islands with better forest cover but high numbers on islands where farming is a significant activity and where high densities of exotic weeds and plants have replaced native forest. The study found invasive wasps on 35 out of 36 islands with the highest mean abundance of common and German wasps —78 wasps per five minute count — found on Great Mercury Island off the Coromandel Peninsula and the highest mean abundance of paper wasps — 33 per five minute count — on Rotoroa Island in the Hauraki Gulf. Lead author of the study, Julia Schmack, a PhD student at University of Auckland’s School of Biological Sciences, says wasps are attracted to open grassland with plenty of sunlight and they also like areas of exotic plants. “Sunlight helps them to warm up and stay active, so areas that are shaded by canopy are not favourable for them whereas open areas of pastureland are,” she says. “Also, the first plants that grow in areas where forest has been cut down are often exotic weeds and we think some of these may provide better food resources for invasive wasps than native plants.” There are five species of introduced social wasps in New Zealand: the German and the common wasp, Vespula germanica and Vespula vulgaris, and three species of paper wasp or Polistes, the Asian and Australian paper wasp as well as the more recently introduced European paper wasp. Social wasps have been particularly successful in New Zealand since introduction, but very little was known about wasps on New Zealand’s offshore islands.

Researchers used GPS technology to randomly assign survey points on each island and adapted standard science methods used for bird counts to estimate wasp numbers. The study found Aorangi Island northeast of Whangarei had no wasps while in contrast, two of New Zealand’s best-known wildlife sanctuaries, Tiritiri Matangi Island and Te Hauturu-O-Toi (Little Barrier Island) in the Hauraki Gulf, were free of German and common wasps, but had relatively high numbers of paper wasps. Introduced social wasps cause big problems for native species including some endangered species. Invasive wasps compete for nectar and honeydew and are a particular problem in South Island beech forests where they consume massive amounts of honeydew which would otherwise be available for native birds, bats, insects and lizards. Wasps also eat native insects and drastically reduce the survival chances of native orb web spiders. Researchers say there is one type of forest which is an exception to this study’s findings and that is forest infested with high densities of native scale insects that produce honeydew. Honeydew is a vital food for many native birds but wasps consume large amounts of it to the detriment of native birds. Ms Schmack says the study provides new and important insights that may help control invasive wasps in New Zealand, particularly on offshore islands with endemic wildlife. If there were more forests, it would likely reduce wasp numbers. Replanting with native trees is an obvious strategy to enhance habitat for native species. “It’s important to look at the whole ecosystem and the influence humans have on it to better understand invasive wasps. “A more holistic approach to managing invasive species is also likely to be more sustainable in terms of resource use and conservation gains.”
