Harakeke art wins at Hokitika

Local harakeke artist Anne Daniel won the Hokitika Driftwood and Sand Festival supreme title this year with her creation Mantle. It took about 40 hours to create using flax, beach stones and driftwood, and captured the judge's attention for its ”simplistic beauty”. It was one of almost 60 sculptures to pop up on the Hokitika beach over the four-day event. Entrants this year included a visitor from north Wales. Other entries included a large kiwi, aquarium, ring-toss game and a driftwood depiction of The Scream.

Anglers flock to Mokihinui

The 50th Mokihinui Fishing Contest was held from December 26 to January 4, and treasurer Tony McNabb said it was a great success.

The 10-day event is one of the oldest fishing competitions of its kind held in New Zealand and attracts participants from outside the district.

“Overall, the competition was great, with 164 fish qualifying for a prize,” Mr McNabb said.

“The first few days presented strong currents and large swells. No fish were weighed in on day three due to the prevailing weather conditions. Those that braved the difficult conditions lost or had gear damaged.”

“These were trying conditions too for kontiki owners. Kontiki were unable to cope with the large seas and strong currents and were carried north and pushed towards the shore or washed

up,” Mr McNabb said.

Flounder, greyboy, gurnard, kahawai, rig, snapper, spikey dogs, trevally and trout were hooked during the event.

The coveted trophy for the heaviest fish went to seasoned competitor Craig Thin with an 11.78kg greyboy. He also hauled in the heaviest 2.17kg kahawai. The heaviest snapper was caught by Shanan Busch weighing in at 4.9kgs and the weightiest trout by Steve Mumm at 1.84kg.

Hans Busch won the heaviest fish caught by a junior, with a 3.57kg snapper. Suzi Van Zuylen took out the prize for the heaviest fish caught by a female which was a 4.07kg greyboy. The heaviest kontiki fish caught was a 5.11kg rig by Joe Brunner and the konitiki snapper was Mike Spillane's weighing 6.13kg.

“The event would not be so great without the sponsors and volunteers, especially Mokihinui Pub and Grub where the weigh-ins were held and weighmaster stalwarts Ron and Helen Bennet,” Mr McNabb said.

Inland Buller moves to prohibited fire season

FIRE and Emergency NZ has declared a prohibited fire season in the Iiland Buller area, as dry and hot conditions have reached the threshold for banning outdoor fires.

West Coast district manager

Myles Taylor says the fire risk is very high due to the hot and dry conditions, and there is no

significant rain forecast to bring relief.

The prohibited fire season came into effect last Wednesday.

It means all existing fire permits are suspended immediately and no new permits for outdoor fires will be issued.

The fire ban covers all of the inland Buller zone, from

Ikamatua to Reefton and Inangahua, Maruia and Springs Junction.

The rest of the West Coast remains in a restricted fire season.

Fire safety advice and full details of fire seasons for the whole of the country are on www.checkitsalright.nz

Reefton Pool dreams big

Acommunity meeting was held recently at the band rotunda in King George Park to discuss a proposed learn to swim/hydrotherapy pool as an addition to the Reefton Swimming Pool.

The meeting was facilitated by Rachel Fifield, the socio-economic development officer engaged to support the project, and Hayley Burnham the aquatics manager.

The issue is the toddlers' pool is not able to be operated in its current state. The current filtration set up for the pool is inadequate for heating and water treatment standards and may require significant work to be operational again.

What was proposed instead was a dualpurpose Toddlers Splash Pool and Learn To Swim/Hydrotherapy Pool. “We are looking at this as an opportunity to improve the already great facility we have and how it can better cater to the needs in our community in terms of our young children learning to swim and our community members who would benefit from hydrotherapy,” Hayley said.

Currently, the shallow end of the pool is too deep for some of the children in the learn to swim programme. Swim Instructors use a platform in the pool so the students can stand during their lesson.

“The fear of the depth slows learning down. A shallow pool with a gradual gradient would be more beneficial,” Hayley said.

Dave Hawes said to the meeting: “I support the learn to swim pool initiative. If one child's life is saved with learning to swim, then a learn to swim pool is a key element and component.”

A separate learning pool would also free up more space for the public in the main pool.

The season length was also discussed. With it currently only stretches out to 6.5 months, parents are concerned that it is too short for their children learning. During the Reefton pool's off-season, parents look for alternatives and some take their children to Westport or Greymouth.

Then there would be the benefit for people who have had a stroke, hip replacement, or numerous other conditions; no longer would they need to travel to the other pools for therapy.

Also, many swimmers find it very difficult getting in and out of the pool during a normal swim.

“There is a hoist chair, but it's not used much as swimmers are too embarrassed as

it's undignified,” Jo Newburry said.

The proposal is for people to be able to walk, or wheelchair, down into the hydrotherapy pool via a gently sloped ramp. The toddler splash pool would have a 'beach access' so would slope down from the floor at a gentle gradient. Swimming lessons would be held in the shallow end of the learn to swim/hydrotherapy pool and the ramp area could be used for the learn to swim programme as well.

Funding for the project was discussed, and Ms Fifield says she will be seeking funding outside of the Buller District Council, so this will not affect the ratepayer.

Having the community support for the project was crucial to the funding application process, she said.

Hayley and Rachel are seeking letters of support from the Reefton, and surrounding communities for the proposal, and how it would be beneficial to families. E-mail to Rachel at buller.sedo@gmail.com

Coping with the water shortages

Happy New Year. I hope you have all had a good break.

It has been a stunning summer, the hottest and driest for many years and this has caused some issues with our water supplies. The good news is that with all your help conserving water our supplies are holding steady and if everyone keeps doing their bit we will get through.

Thank you for your efforts under these unprecedented circumstances. There have been many questions about how our water systems work and many suggestions to help the situation and in response, our operations team have provided an explanation below. More in-depth information can be found on our website and social media pages.

The three existing bores are about 10m deep into the gravels at the Coal Creek site. We are very fortunate to have clean deep gravels in the Grey Valley because it provides a natural filter bed that holds back fine sediment

and impurities before it is distributed through the network. As the water level in the ground drops the river feeds water back through the gravels and that is a state we are in currently.

Pumps are positioned at the bottom of the bores. If turned off the water level in the bores and in the surrounding gravels would be at the same height.

When the pumps are on, the water drawn from the wells is assisted by the hydrostatic pressure, which causes water to flow towards a negative pressure zone created by the pumping.

When water is pumped up from the bores it enters a treatment plant where it is treated by ultraviolet light, lime is added to balance pH levels, which protects the network and home plumbing from corrosion, and chlorine is added. It then enters a balance tank, like a large reservoir, where the chlorine evens out and acts on any bacteria which may be present in the water.

 Why can't water be pumped directly

from the Grey River to the network?

While the river looks quite clean, it contains a lot of impurities like algae, E.coli and nitrogen and the volume of water needed to supply the town would result in considerable contamination of the network. UV treatment consists of glass tubes with UV lights and the tubes would quickly build up material and become ineffective. A boil water notice could be issued but the water would still be quite dirty, clog things like shower heads, toilet cisterns, pressure reducing valves on hot water systems, cause ceramic taps to drip and it would have an unpleasant smell and taste. When reverting back to the clean supply the entire plant would need to be completely decontaminated, shutting it down and cleaning out the large balance tank, UV treatment, valves and other parts at great cost.

 Why doesn't the council just dig a

trench from the river to the bores?

The gravel bed, that acts as a filter, is very sensitive to disturbance and there is potential that excavating too near the bores could permanently damage the filtration properties of the gravel. If we excavate a trench to the bores, next time it floods water might not be filtered and would contain high levels of turbidity, potentially running brown when you turn on taps.

 Why doesn't the council drill the bores deeper?

A mudstone layer exists in the ground at the bottom of the existing bores. These bores are currently at the most optimum depth and drilling deeper would not provide any advantages.

The council has a project currently in progress, constructing a fourth bore. This will improve the operational capability of the existing plant.

Karamea Centennial Museum fundraiser

The Karamea Historical Society is on a mission to urgently raise $51,000 to contribute to the building extensions of the Karamea Centennial Museum, which it administers.

So far $71,000 has been raised.

“We are applying to Lottery Heritage and Environment but we need to come up with one third of the $391,000 by February 20,” president-secretary Dulcie McNabb said.

The museum is rich in history, records and exhibits dating back to early Polynesian settlement, Karamea's European 'special settlement' in 1874 as well as flora and fauna from the area. It was opened in 1974, to celebrate 100 years of established settlement in Karamea.

“After two years of negotiations, just before Christmas the Canterbury Museum returned the artefacts back to Karamea that were the balance of the 'McNabb Collection' of early Polynesian taonga.

Ms McNabb's father, Trevor, found about 80 stone adzes at the Heaphy River mouth between the 1930s and 1950s while deerstalking in the vicinity.

“We have so many unbelievable

photographs, documents and resources to be exhibited but we have run out of space. When we are gifted things, we wander around trying to find an appropriate place for them to go. There is no room left so that is why we need the building extension done,” Ms McNabb said.

The six committee members range in age from 50 to 80. They often have to prepare items for exhibition in their homes and then return them to the museum as there is nowhere to work in the current premises.

“Maisie Richardson was an active member of the society and she died a few years ago aged 100.“ Ms McNabb said.

The extension of the museum has been on the cards for many years – it was talked about as far back as 2010 – and the historical society is hoping it will be completed by the 150th celebrations of Karamea's European settlement, scheduled for November 15 to 17, 2024.

“Covid and Covid and Covid and the Westport floods have been a major hiccup with the lack of tradespeople. We are also only a very small community drawing on a very small population for support.”

That is why a Givealittle page has been set up.

“We need to get the message out there to all our loyal ex-pats to help support the museum

expansion. We always have a steady stream of people looking for their roots. We house the school's records as well as births, deaths and marriages, and maps and documents relating to the establishment of the 'special settlement,' but we don't have enough space to even spread out the documents to search easily,” Ms McNabb said.

“We need help to reach our ex-pat community. Whether you can spare $5 or $50 (or more, of course!) it would all be a big help towards making our new build possible – a dozen nails or a length of timber – it all adds up.”

The museum is on Ministry of Education land, and together with the Karamea Area School board of trustees, has given its wholehearted support to the project.

The museum is open six days a week in the summer season – 'from 1pm until 4 or when the last people leave'. Two staff are employed part-time along with a host of volunteers. It is open on request out of regular opening hours. Anyone interested in donating can check out the Givealittle page. Details are also available on the museum's Facebook page.

“Donations can also be lodged with the Karamea Historical Society Inc at NBS 03-13540291559-00 using your name with 'build' as reference,” Ms McNabb said.

Room for improvement among water craft users

THE classic New Zealand summer holidays started with a number of preventable mishaps on the water, including collisions, vessels overturning and several incidents where people showed a lack of understanding for the rules.

Over the holiday period since December 23 dozens of incidents have beenreported to Maritime NZ.

The number of reported incidents only tends to be a snapshot of behaviour. Many more incidents tend to go unreported.

The incidents notified to Maritime NZ ranged from minor to quite serious.

“The majority of these were preventable, and several people were unable to go home

uninjured after a planned day of fun on the water,” says principal adviser recreational craft Matt Wood.

“The majority of these were preventable, and several saw people unable to go home uninjured after a planned day of fun on the water.”

With plenty of time still left in summer, Maritime NZ does not want these trends to continue.

“We recommend skippers do not go out on the water if they are not adequately prepared to go out on the vessel they are in charge of.

“Over-confidence,can be one of the biggest risk factors on the water.

“There are a range of Coastguard courses

to help ensure skippers have the skills and knowledge to head out onto the water safely.

“It is important for people to remember; if they are in charge of a vessel they are legally responsible for keeping themselves, their passengers and other water users safe,” Matt Wood says.

“Going out underprepared puts yourself, your passengers and other water users at risk. To put it simply, it is not worth it.

“You need to carry two forms of communications, have properly fitted lifejackets for everyone on board and check the marine weather forecast prior to leaving shore,” he says.

Maritime NZ recommends those planning on heading out check out saferboating.org. nz for information about how to prepare for a day on the water.

Matt Wood says anyone who sees unsafe actions on the water can report them via maritimenz.govt.nz

“If you go out on the water thinking she'll be right. You could injure yourself, others, and Maritime NZ does prosecute those involved in incidents in the recreational craft space.

“Notifying Maritime NZ of an incident isn't 'being a snitch', it is looking out for your fellow water users, and a tool to help keep people safe,” Matt Wood says.

A and P Show: ‘Heart and soul of Reefton’

This Saturday will mark the 113th running of the Inangahua A and P Show, which is back in full swing after the cancellation in 2022 due to Covid restrictions.

It is the major community event of the year on the Reefton calendar and attracts good support. The Reefton Racecourse is expected to be a hive of activity throughout the day.

Organising committee chairwoman Robyn Abbey says she and her team are thrilled to be back with a programme to suit all interests and ages.

“There's a great range of equestrian events, sulky races, coal shovelling, shearing, gold panning and archery to name just a few. There

will be a large variety of trade and market stalls and a selection of food options, coffee and icecream to keep visitors sustained.”

The crowd favourite dog show has classes which include best trick, obstacle course, dash and best dressed.

A classic show line-up of sideshow amusements and rides will entertain children of all ages.

The talents of local artists, bakers, gardeners, photographers and craft workers will be on display, with a range of prizes on offer from sponsors.

Exhibits are able to be lodged on show morning from 8am to 10am and visitors can vote for their favourite exhibits in a number of sections.

Exhibit and entry details – including for children – are available from the show schedule at the Inangahua A and P Show Facebook page.

Robyn Abbey says rural A and P shows showcase the heart and soul of their communities and the Inangahua Show is no exception.

“Without a core group of volunteers, loyal sponsors and competitors it would not happen. Bring your sun-hat and join us on February 4.”

Gates open to the public at 8.30am.

Family pass $15 (two adults and up to three school age children), adults $6, senior citizens $5, child $3 (school age), under-5s free.

Recycling bin audit shows improvement

Buller District Council's recycling bin audit programme is delivering positive results, reducing recycling contamination in the district.

The data collected indicates that checking people's

recycling bins and educating residents is improving recycling behaviours.

Solid waste co-ordinator Juliana Ruiz says: “Since we started the programme on December 7 we have seen the number of items that cannot be recycled going in to yellow bins reducing. Our contamination rate in December was 13% less than it was in November. This is very promising and shows that the programme helps people to change their habits.”

The audit programme, which was first trialled at the beginning of 2022, involves recycling bins being checked and receiving a green, yellow, or red tag based on their compliance with the council's recycling guidelines. Each household that has their bin

checked is supplied with a recycling guide that includes advice on how to improve their recycling. Staff check bins ahead of collection to prevent bins with incorrect items being loaded onto the collection truck. This minimises contamination of other recyclable materials.

Ms Ruiz says: “The majority of people that had their recycling bins audited and who received a red or yellow tag improved their recycling effort. Of those, 64% have gone on to receive a green tag on their next collection. This shows that educating residents is effective.”

Staff are supplying residents with advice specific to their recycling mistakes when checking the bins and collect data of residents who are not showing improvement and require further

education. The council website also contains a lot of information on what can and cannot be recycled.

“Educating residents and minimising highly contaminated recycling material being mixed with recyclable material together is reducing Buller's contamination rate. Contaminated recycling has to be dumped, which costs everyone in the long run.”

The most common recycling errors are bottle lids being left on, and cardboard such as pizza boxes being mistaken for recycling. Cardboard that has contained food such as chips or pizza is contaminated with food and therefore cannot be recycled.

The council will continue to check residents recycling bins over summer.

Rangatahi on a mission

The 'Rising Rangatahi' van is often seen buzzing around the streets of Westport but what is the story behind it? ROSE O'CONNOR tracked it down to discover its origins.

Tessa Spillane from Buller REAP is one multi-tasking extraordinaire. She juggles many different hats in her role of navigating Buller youth through the ever-increasing stormy road of life.

As REAP's youth services co-ordinator for the past 18 months, Tessa has introduced the 'Rising Rangatahi' Project to the district. The youth inclusion project is into its second year of three years of funding in Westport.

“It aims to provide rangatahi-youth with all the foundations and support to help promote a more positive outcome in life and inclusion within the community,” Tessa said.

She is one of a team of three from three different local NGOs who meet weekly to plan the way forward for in need youth and whanau.

“There's a huge growing need for these

services in our town. There appears to be so many disengaged youth and displaced families out there especially since the floods. The ages of our at-risk youth are just getting younger as well.

“We receive referrals from many areas including schools, Police and individuals themselves. Then, as a team, we speculate the needs of that young person and come up with a plan going forward.”

Tessa is joined by Bianca Forbes who is contracted by Te Ha o Kawatiri to provide a cultural aspect to the project. Her role is to help youth explore a holistic approach to wellness through hinengaro (mind), tinana (body), wairua (soul), and whanau (family). Her approach combines a wide range of traditional Maori healing and bodywork.

The third member of the team is Holly

Parsons from Homebuilders West Coast, a social worker providing home based whanaufamily support.

“Together, we provide a holistic approach to wrap around the individual while also supporting the family,” Tessa said.

“My role also involves a lot of liaising with organisations to provide services for youth. Under the contract we currently work with Whenua Iti Outdoors to provide one outdoor, two-day experience each school holidays.

“Noel McArthur from 'Anyone Can Read' provides ongoing specialist help with literacy. 'Explore' is a specialty service that we liaise with to bring an outside expert to Kawatiri each term to work with social service and youth providers. Much of it is about upskilling those working with youth in ways

Family fun at Woodstock

A Woodstock Family Fun Day recently had a good turnout for the inaugural event.

Organiser Gillian Belton said children and adults alike enjoyed a few races, great tunes from the

Hokitika Music Club, and a barbecue run by the Woodstock Domain Board.

The bouncy obstacle course was a hit with the young ones, and the Fire Service did a fire prevention

demonstration.

“Thanks again to our amazing wee community for coming along to support and enjoy this very relaxed, family fun day. I'm looking forward to doing it all again next year!“

to deal with trauma-based behaviours.”

Tessa also trialled an after-school pilot programme at Westport South School in 2022. Along with police preventions officer Sarah Cook, they ran one weekly after school session for a variety of youth for 10 weeks.

“We had a huge array of young people from all walks of earth.”

They explored values including compassion, teamwork bravery and problem-solving.

“We used fun, educational ways to deliver the programme.”

They will return to Westport South in term one and then to Westport North School in term two.

So, that “Rising Rangatahi' van is one van on an important mission – to help save our local troubled youth!
