“Though you don't need to be an Olympic athlete to complete the Old Ghost Road, you must be well prepared and have appropriate experience as this trail can be technically challenging. You need to be fit, but also competent in the remote outdoors. When the weather lets loose you need to know what you're doing,” says Rossiter.
2 Wednesday, August 31, 2022The West Coast Messenger
The Old Ghost Road is typically ridden by cyclists who are looking for a challenge and an experience that allows them to completely unplug and refresh. The trail is 85km of 'grade four' (out of six) mountainbiking set in the naturally beautiful, rugged, and remote environment that can only be found on the West Coast.
Wilderness Trail. They're multi-day outdoor adventures, with breath-taking scenery, and historic origins – and these features are what make them unique to the Coast. For an all-age cycling experience, the West Coast Wilderness Trail guarantees some of the smoothest and most accessible cycle trail riding in New Zealand. The four-daylong, 133km adventure (though you can dip in for a day or even just a few hours) boasts incredible scenery and a 'grade two' rating, which means riders aged five to 95 can enjoy the journey. One day you might find yourself in ancient forests, the next cycling alongside historic gold mining settlements, as the trail's foundations were laid by gold miners over 150 years ago.
“Every trail is made to provide you a phenomenal experience all year round, but summer can be busy. Nip over in spring and you'll beat the crowds.“
Jackie Gurden, from the West Coast Wilderness Trail Cycle Trust, says that beyond the accessibility of the track, the views are what people are most delighted by. “You'll pinch yourself with every new vista. There's a bit of everything on the trail: lake and ocean views, rainforest and bush, historic towns, and wetlands. The scenery will blow you away.”
Recent surveys of visitors to the Old Ghost Road reveal that 71.4% had decided to tackle the trail to escape the daily pressures of life, a motivation that has been increasing significantly in the last few years. Other motivations that also scored highly are exercise, relaxation, experiencing the natural environment, and spending time with friends or family.
If the Wilderness Trail or the Old Ghost Road don't quench your thirst, the Coast has plenty of other cycling trails to offer including the Paparoa and Heaphy tracks, both of which were recently named by Lonely Planet in the top 12 most 'Epic Hikes' in Australia and New Zealand. All four of these trails can be walked and cycled, although the Heaphy Track is only open to cyclists from May 1 until November 30. Seasoned cyclist and renowned outdoorsmen Dave Ritchie says that no matter the trail you pick, the West Coast is guaranteed to offer you the experience of a life-time.“There are incredible trails that criss-cross through friendly and vibrant communities, where you'll meet 'the true Coaster'. They're equipped with huts and amenities, and they'll take you off the beaten track to rugged and unreal places. You're not going to find trails like them anywhere else.” No matter the weather, Dave says that the West Coast's trails are made for the ride.
Coast cycleway use soars
Phil Rossiter, chairman of the MokihinuiLyell Backcountry Trust, the organisation that constructed and operates the Old Ghost Road, explains that increasingly people are cycling the trail to unplug and escape life's daily pressures, despite the physical and mental challenge that the track can present.
“More than ever before people are saying that escaping the grind is one of their chief motivations for getting on the trail. Lots of people are coming to escape the stresses brought by Covid by immersing themselves in the natural environment and generating some endorphins in the process.”
According to Nga Haerenga New Zealand Cycle Trail's latest evaluation report, people are taking to the West Coast's cycling trails more than ever before, despite the Covid-19 pandemic and its impacts on international and domestic traveller activity.
“If you're in for a true blue mountain biking experience you visit the Old Ghost Road. If you're in for an easier ride, you'll take the beautifully designed Wilderness Trail.
The West Coast has trails for all levels of experience, from the remote and challenging Old Ghost Road to the more relaxed and serene

The existing information boards and artefacts around the current toilets have been removed and stored during the construction phase. The information panels and artefacts will be reinstalled once the new toilets are in place. Ms Trigg says: “The historic flair of the Broadway has turned into a drawcard attracting visitors from close and far to Reefton. We wanted the new toilets to fit into the historic feeling and enhance the unique flair of Reefton's main street.”

Kanoa shown the value of infrastructure funding in Hokitika
Buller-based architect Carrynne Scarlet worked with pre-fabricated toilet manufacturer Permaloo on the historic inspired design of the new toilet block. The toilets will feature modern fixtures and fittings that are durable, easy to clean, and offer wheelchair access on the inside.MsTrigg says: “Offering easy to maintain, modern and disability friendly toilet facilities at this popular stop-off location to visitors and locals, was a key requirement developing the design with our architect and the manufacturer.”
The cost for the project totals $400,000, with $200,000 paid out of MBIE's Tourism Infrastructure Funding, which council secured at no cost to ratepayers. The remaining $200,000 is funded by council. Other contractors involved in the project are Rosco Contractors Ltd, All About Sewer, Avant Build Cost Solutions Ltd, Electronet Services, and Westport Hire.
ROBERT Pigou the chief executive of the regional development fund Kanoa, visited Westland on August 16 to view some of the key projects funded by MBIE for the benefit of the Westland community. His programme included visiting the Hokitika Airport terminal extension, which received $1.2 million of investment, Butlers landfill, Hokitika Swimming Pool and the Carnegie Building. The visit to Butlers landfill was of particular interest to the MBIE team, as it is one of the few projects of its type that MBIE have funded. $3.3 million was granted to complete remediation of the Fox Glacier landfill site and the clean-up of the river basin following the landfill breach during severe flooding in early 2019. Over 16,000 tonnes of mixed waste material was transported to the existing Butlers site at Hokitika and additionally a new 1ha waste cell was constructed that will address the region's landfill requirements for the next 15 years.
Mr Pigou then visited Hokitika Swimming Pool to look at the completed phase one of the swimming pool, which was part of a successful $3m funding bid. The visit finished at the Carnegie Building, which is nearing its final stages of completion for the earthquake strengthening works. Westland District Council chief executive Simon Bastion said: “I am delighted that Mr Pigou came to Westland to look at the good work council is doing on behalf of the community. The money provided by MBIE has been instrumental in helping council to deliver significant infrastructure investment and improvements for the community. This visit allowed us to show the ministry how beneficial it is to districts with small ratepayer bases to receive funding to carry out projects that might otherwise be unaffordable. This is especially so with the work to remediate the Fox Glacier landfill that affected the environment so severely.“

“You can watch all the online training videos you want, but being there, getting real time feedback from the instructor is gold
“I used to go round corners like I was riding a bicycle and didn’t have a clue about counter steering That has all changed,” says Carl “One of the things I love about the Ride Forever Gold course, designed for more experienced riders, is that it is tailored to the needs of the participants on the day At $50 for a full day course with an expert instructor, it ’s pretty good value for money,” Carl reckons

Cervical Screening Awareness Month
It is important that you feel comfortable with the person who takes your smear. You have a choice of where to go to have smears: local doctor or practice sexual health service 769 788 9030
A woman’s best protection against developing cervical cancer is having regular cervical screening. Cervical cancer is one of the easiest cancers to prevent – as long as we detect the cell changes that cause it, early. New Zealand has one of the best cervical screening programmes in the world to help you do that. Smear tests saves lives - Early treatment is highly successful Since the national screening programme started, the number of women who die from cervical cancer has decreased by nearly two thirds. And if every woman got tested regularly, the number could drop even lower. A cervical screening test detects abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix. Changes to these cells happen very slowly – so by having regular screening, there is a very high likelihood that any abnormal cells will be found and treated long before they become cancer. Having regular tests can reduce a woman’s risk of developing cervical cancer by 90%. Anyone with a cervix or vagina who has ever been sexually active should have regular cervical screening from the age of 25 until they turn 70. Who should have smear tests? If you: • are a woman or trans or non-binary person with a cervix • are aged between 25 and 69 • have ever been sexually active, then you should have regular smear tests. This includes if you: • are immunised against HPV • are single • only have sex with women • have a disability • have been through menopause • are no longer having sex. If you have had a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) check with your health provider whether you still need to be screened. But with regular cervical screening any changes on the cervix can be detected and treated before they become cancers. Where can I go for a smear?

There are no longer significant tax benefits in purchasing an asset. Instead, depreciation can only be claimed based on the number of months that an asset is owned in the tax year. The depreciation claim on the new vehicle may not be enough to offset against the depreciation recovered income on the traded in vehicle. As a general rule it is a good idea to change vehicles in the first few months of an income year rather than the last few months.

If you do decide to replace your vehicle you may end up with some unexpected tax consequences. The Clean Car Programme was recently enacted where ‘polluting’ vehicles, including utes, have a fee charged when they are first registered. Because of this and time delays with importing items into the country, we have seen the value of second-hand utes stay stable and, in some cases, increase in value. If the value of a trade in is more than the book value of the vehicle traded in, this results in depreciation recovery income, which is taxable income.

Mr Cleine highlights that consumer spending in Buller has been impacted by the high inflation in New Zealand reaching levels not seen in over 30 years.“National inflation of 7.3% for the year to June 2022 is higher than the increase in consumer spending in Buller with 4.0% pa, meaning that the high inflation out weighted consumer spending.”
The report states that total tourism expenditure in the Buller district felt by 10.4% in the last year, however the district is still sitting above prepandemic levels. Mr Cleine says: “This reflects how the district has done well to grow its share of the domestic market, which is now smoothening the impact of the recent slowdown in domestic travel.” The number of non-residential consents softened by 12.7% since June 2021, however this places Buller still significantly above the district's long-term average. Residential consents are up by 47.9% compared with the same 12-month period a year Elevatedbefore.global dairy prices may also help boost Buller's economy with an expected dairy payout $24 million higher than last season's. Mr Cleine says: “It is great to see that our economic indicators are looking positive in these difficult times on such a wide spectrum ranging from tourism, to construction and agriculture. There is still a large amount of construction work to be done, with an additional 11 residential dwellings consented in just this quarter, but we are aware that we are heading towards the tail end of the flood recovery work.”
Granity senior firefighter Kevin Fastier, left, chief fire officer Murray Watson, operational support Margaret Harris with resident Gilbert Hardaker after having his smoke alarms checked during the rollout.
“The response was very positive. Most residents knew we were coming due to the advertising we had done and they were very happy to have us carry out the checks.” As a result of the campaign, 100 new smoke alarms, donated by Fire and Emergency were installed.“Themain purpose of the exercise was to focus on checking existing alarms and to see they were installed and positioned correctly. Our main message was the importance of working smoke alarms in homes which gives people the best opportunity to get out safely in a fire.
The Infometrics Quarterly Economic Monitor publishes regularly reports about local economies for the quarters ending March, June, September, and December.
Buller keeps going BULLER district's strong economic performance continues, despite the difficult economic climate for the quarter ending June 2022, according to a report released last week. The Buller district's GDP grew 4.9% in the past year, however fell sharply in the June quarter. West Coast region overall led New Zealand in economic growth with a GDP increase of 4.2% in the year but experienced the same sharp dip over the three months ending June. Buller Mayor Jamie Cleine says this is great news in challenging times for Buller and the West Coast.
Mr Smith said another rollout was not planned for his area.
“New Zealand’s successful lockdown/ elimination strategy, which gave us time to get most of the country vaccinated, has meant we didn’t experience a wave of mortality that happened in other parts of the world, and our health system was not immediately overwhelmed. On the whole, I think the West Coast has done pretty well, and there are still opportunities to look after the more vulnerable people in our community by getting vaccinated.”
“There is nothing more frustrating than trying to get somewhere quickly and we can't find it nor get up the driveway!
“We also passed on the message to always keep an eye on what is being cooked. We know that house fires often start in the kitchen.”
Mr Smith also said that the home visits also gave the opportunity to discuss other important fire and emergency safety messages.
WHILE it is possible up to half of all West Coasters have already caught Covid-19, vaccinations, including Covid-19 boosters, are still available across the region. West Coast Covid-19 Vaccination Programme clinical lead Sophie Carey says the number of people who have had Covid-19 are a bit of an inexact science. Not all people infected with Covid-19 get symptoms, and not all people that have a positive Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) record the result. Through to August 22 the Coast had recorded 9913 recovered Covid-19 cases, but Sophie thinks the real number is likely to be twice that. People can get Covid more than once (because of the new variants and waning immunity) and the evidence is that each subsequent infection increases the risk of complications, hospitalisation and Long Covid. She says some people assume that if they have had the virus, they no longer need to get vaccinated. “Plus, there’s vaccination fatigue –people have other priorities in their lives at the moment. Our community is definitely feeling less urgent to come and have the second booster dose,” Sophie says. “We have a tool that’s the best we’ve got in terms of protecting individuals, particularly the most vulnerable, to help keep them out of hospital. It’s never too late to be vaccinated, people can change their minds and we have to be open and be available for that.

Mr Smith said it has been interesting that crew members had met people who had already experienced house fires. “They clearly knew how intimidating a fire really is and they all had many working smoke alarms already installed. They had clearly listened to the messages.”MrSmith said the exercise had also provided a great opportunity to talk to potential recruits.
C
Mr Cleine says: “We can see the distorting impact of the flood events reflected in the deep drop in house sales. Clearly Buller is not alone considering that country wide, house sales in the three months to June fell at the fastest rate since October 2010, excluding the lockdown months inBullermid-2020.”andthe West Coast region recorded a solid increase in house values being the highest in New Zealand. Buller is leading the West Coast districts with 37.8%, adding to the region's overall growth of 33.7%. The average increase in house value in New Zealand was 9.6% over the last 12 months. Mr Cleine says to put the good news in context. “The increase in house prices is a growth but a substantial slowdown from the fast and steep growth recorded in late 2021. In these two years, house values especially in Buller skyrocketed, causing ordinary houses to be sold for extraordinaryExpectationsprices.”remain for rising interest rates, and high inflation to challenge economic growth for the remainder of 2022. Mr Cleine says that the impact of these difficulties will not bypass the district. “The report clearly outlines that the New Zealand economy has been impacted by high inflation, lower consumer confidence, rising interest rates, and ongoing staff and supply chain issues over the last quarter. These external factors will impact our district but we have so far sailed relatively smoothly through the rough last quarter. Our district has done well over the last couple of years and is in a good position to brace what the remainder of 2022 brings.”
The number of vaccinated school children aged five to 11 are still on the low side: 45.2% have received the first vaccine and 23.2% are fully vaccinated. Most West Coast schools have had cases of the virus, and some are now experiencing a second wave of“Theinfections.Covid-19 vaccination is not a silver bullet. But we know that it can prevent those most at risk of becoming seriously unwell, being hospitalised from the virus.
PICTURE: Rose O'Connor n by Rose O'Connor in Westport
“The science supports getting boosted six months after the previous vaccination, which makes sense because we know that immunity wanes over time. And we’re suggesting for people that have had Covid-19 that they give their bodies three months to recover fully before getting any Covid-19 vaccination.”
“We met people who had been thinking of joining and this hopefully gave them the encouragement they needed. Like most brigades on the Coast, we can always do with more operational crew. It is a big commitment, but it's also very rewarding.”
“We are hoping people can maintain their own smoke alarms now. We do intend to get to the houses we missed at some stage.”
Fire and Emergency New Zealand was considering doing rollouts in other areas of the Coast following the success of the Granity brigade one.
The percentage of people on the Coast who have had a first dose sits at 92.3%, and 91% for the second dose. The first booster coverage is currently 72.6%, and 2603 second booster doses have been given on the Coast to date. In cases where Whole Genome Sequencing has been carried out on the Coast, the majority of the results have been the Omicron BA.5 subvariant. The vaccination programme saw a peak about three weeks after the second boosters were made available, and since then, clinic staffing numbers have been reduced to match a reduction in demand.
“We were joined by some career fire staff based in Greymouth, Seddonville Rural Fire Force members and volunteers from the Waimangaroa brigade.”MrSmith said there were over 400 properties in the area and 250 had been visited.
He said it was essential that properties were well numbered and easy to locate, as well as driveways actually being accessible to emergency vehicles like fire engines as well as ambulances.
“As firefighters, we want to know that people are already safely out before we even leave the station. That way, we can work to protect the property without the added pressure of getting people out first. “Smoke alarms are cheap, easy to install and effective in saving lives.”
“Achieving 4.9% growth, compared with an average of 0.9% in New Zealand, is very encouraging. Our district and the West Coast region continue to perform well above the national trend. However, the sharp decline shows that we are not immune to the difficult climate that has taken its toll on the economy over the June quarter 2022.”
Vaccinations still available and helpful against Covid-19
Buller recorded a sharp drop of 50.4% in house sales in the last year, compared to a year earlier. Matching this trend, house sales on the West Coast fell steeply by 38.4% in the year to June 2022. This decline fits the national trend of fewer houses changing hands in New Zealand (down 26%).
rew members from the Granity Volunteer Fire Brigade were recently joined by other West Coast fire staff to visit homes and carry out smoke alarm inspections. Senior firefighter and spokesman Grant Smith said the rollout involved 16 members in teams of two, visiting properties in the brigade's 'turnout area' spanning from Karamea Bluff in the north to Jones Creek in the south.
“We’re now looking at moving Covid vaccinations from an emergency workforce into primary healthcare. You can get your Covid-19 vaccinations at Buller Medical and Coast Medical in Westport, at our Te Nikau Hospital campus Community Services building and Olsens in Greymouth, and at the Westland Medical Centre and Westland Pharmacy in Hokitika.”
