ew would find it easy to pack up and move permanently to another country let alone with three young kids in tow.

However, that is exactly what Buller High School maths teacher Florette Mulowayi

has done.

But throw into the mix arriving in the country on March 20 last year as air spaces shut behind her, the Covid-19 lockdown and now travel restrictions that are keeping her doctor husband Jacques stuck in Johannesburg, and the picture becomes

more complex for this intelligent, highly resilient woman.

"We arrived in New Zealand at 6pm and the borders shut at 8pm!" she said.

Granity Players experience Shakespeare n by Rose O'Connor THE youth section of Granity Players drama group is heading to Wellington to take part in the national Shakespeare Globe Centre NZ (SGCNZ) Shakespeare Festival.

Seven young Buller thespians will be performing three, five minute sections of A Midsummer Night's Dream, directed by Tracey McEwing. The 12 to 19 year olds will be one of the youngest groups competing.

"It is a huge event and it is going to be a huge challenge. Many of those taking part are in their last years of high school and come from large Auckland schools where they take it very seriously.

We practice twice a week," Ms McEwing said.

The local group earned the right to take part by winning the recent West Coast Shakespeare Festival.

"Judge Ellen Curnow said she felt we could 'hold our own',''Ms McEwing said.

"There has been a lull in interest on the Coast and we are trying to build it back up," she said.

"If we hadn't entered a group this year we were going to lose the opportunity to attend the national event."

"It will be a full-on weekend with training and performances at the Michael Fowler Centre.

It is the 30th anniversary of the festival. Performers also have the opportunity to be chosen to

perform at The Globe in London," Ms McEwing said.

Buller High School has attended the national festival in the past with Billy Thomas going on to win the 'best actor' at the London Globe event.

The group will be accompanied by four adults. They have been busy fundraising. A 12-hour market was recently held at the Art Hotel with food, stalls and live music mostly run by the families involved.

"We have had some great support. Buller Electricity gave us a generous donation to kick start our fundraising. We are waiting to hear if we have received grants through some community organisations."

The Caravan Takeaways is happily parked beside the Torea Gallery and Studios in Granity.

ranity residents are 'over the moon' that a new food cart has arrived in the village, according to owner of 'The Caravan Takeaways,' Willy Harding.

Mr Harding, owner of Grumpys Takeaways in Westport, offers a selection of beverages including tea and coffees, as well as traditional takeaways including fish and chips, burgers and cakes and snacks.

The Caravan Takeaways was over a year in the planning for Mr Harding.

He said insurances were getting so expensive that he decided to create the food cart as his own insurance.

"Let's face it, there is such a lack of available suitable places in Westport that if there was say a flood, there would be nowhere for me to set up. This way, I will always have an

alternative."

Mr Harding completed the food cart conversion himself before Christmas and spent the summer set up at Gentle Annie.

"Business was great."

As the busy holiday season slowed, Mr Harding decided to move and the spot outside the Torea Gallery and Studios materialised. He said business has exceeded expectations.

He is currently open daily from 11am to 2pm and from 5 to 7.30pm on Friday and Saturday evenings. He has employed a local to work part time in the evenings and another to work mornings.

"That will free me up to do my next project… I have a few ideas in the pipeline."

Mr Harding also facilitates the Kawatiri Knight Owls which patrols Westport streets during the evenings.

There was something for everyone as 21 stallholders made the most of the sunshine and tempted punters with a wide selection of goods for sale that ranged from antiques and mechanical to plants and clothing. All proceeds went to the running of the Kumara Sportsground.

Youth in Sherlock Holmes drama Youth drama group Limelight Productions acted out the mystery Sherlock Holmes and the Pirates of the Horn recently for a show staged at John Paul II High School, Greymouth. Set in 1888, the plot centres around a series of pirate attacks in the Suez Canal in 1888 and the fictional detective's efforts to get to the bottom of the skulduggery. With a kidnapping, rare artefacts, and scurrilous intentions, it provided much entertainment from the moment the curtain opened. Here, the cast poses in front of the curtain after the matinee show.

Thirty-six-year-old Florette was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo and moved to Johannesburg, South Africa, with her parents and four siblings over 20 years ago.

About four years ago, Florette and her husband decided to emigrate because they were not happy with how life was panning out in South Africa. Many countries were considered, but New Zealand ticked the boxes.

After a two-year process, Florette was granted certification by the New Zealand Teachers Council which meant she could start looking for a job as a secondary school teacher. She secured a fixed term contract in Whanganui, resigned her teaching position, arranged child care and a school for her three young sons, sold their house, organised a furnished rental in Whanganui, purchased plane tickets for her first international flight, and the adventure began.

Jacques, who specialises in maternal and child health, stayed behind to complete his Masters Degree and was planning to follow a few months later. He had resigned his job and moved in with Florette's family where he still lives. He has yet to secure full-time work as he remains hopeful that he will be able to leave for New Zealand at short notice.

Jacques is unable to apply for registration as a doctor in New Zealand until he arrives and completes the requirements.

"He is prepared to do anything in the meantime - mental health, nursing - even cleaning. It just seems strange that they appear to be crying out for doctors on the Coast. We are already settled in Westport, love it here and yet he can't even step foot in the country," Florette said.

She has applied to Immigration twice and

been rejected both times. The second time, the application was submitted on a Saturday and was rejected first thing on Monday morning.

"I don't even think they read the new application which included a lot more thorough information," she said. "It is very frustrating."

Florette's job in Whanganui finished at the end of last year and she upped the family yet again and moved them to Westport, setting up in a school flat last December.

Florette said it is difficult for the family being separated. They talk on zoom every day. The youngest was just nine-months-old when she left South Africa. However, the opportunities available for her family and the 'freedom' in this country makes her confident they have made the right decision.

"I was surprised at how very small Westport is. It only takes a few minutes to drive into the town.

Johannesburg is so busy and crazy. I wanted a more laidback life with more control of what's happening. I think I've found that in Westport," Florette said.

She said her colleagues at the high school had been very friendly and welcoming as had the Anglican Church community she attends. Her nine-year-old son, Hadriel, attends Westport North School, plays junior basketball and has joined St John Youth and Granity Judo. He loves swimming at the nearby pool. In Johannesburg he did piano lessons only.

The two younger boys, Uriel, nearly two, and Gaddiel, nearly three, attend a local day care. The family had a daughter die a baby seven years ago.

It is obviously a huge juggling act for this remarkable woman, but one she is managing capably with her positive attitude and her hopes pinned on a more prosperous future for her family in New Zealand.

n inaugural surf camp for children was held at Bazil's Hostel and Surf School in Westport at the end of April, attracting 10 students.

Organised by siblings Vanessa Lee, Justine Mitchell and Bazil's co-owner Steve Lee, Surf Westport - Junior Surf Camp was designed to promote surfing as a healthy lifestyle choice as well as personal well-being.

While focusing on teaching surfing skills with tutor Steve, it also included yoga at the local studio with Hannah Green along with a session at the beach. A contingency plan against bad weather included skateboarding, pool sessions and paddle boarding where 'surfing' skills could be worked on.

at home vacation) at Steve and partner Staci Offwood's property at Cape Foulwind, with daily surfing lessons and camping out proving popular. Vanessa said other friends thought it looked amazing and wanted a similar thing for their own kids. "We decided we should do this for real!" she said.

"This is an initial trial run with mostly friends' kids to see how it works. We think ten is an ideal number as it gives more 1:1 time with Steve. Going forward, we may open it up to school groups for camps.

We'd like to be able to have camps tailormade for groups such as teenage girls.

"There are 120 beds at Bazil's and with the loss of tourist buses, things are pretty quiet," camp mother Vanessa said.

Ms Lee had done her research and thought there was only one other overnight surf camp being offered in New Zealand.

"The surf camp is a way to keep the hostel in use as well as business coming into the town. This is a trial run so we can make a little movie using clips. We might do more over the summer," Steve said.

While some of the students were experienced surfers, many had never surfed before. Most students were local or from the Inangahua area, with two travelling from Christchurch. It catered for all abilities.

The students stayed together at the hostel with meals provided. A highlight was also the Thursday night bonfire barbecue at the beach.

The organisers thought a surf camp was an exciting opportunity for kids to meet new people, open their minds to new ideas and have a lot of fun, while also learning to surf, stay safe and respect the ocean and beautiful beaches.

RESIDENTS at Greymouth's Dixon House enjoyed cakes, slices and some great stories last week thanks to students of Tai Poutini Polytechnic and Paroa School.

Each year, the Polytechnic's cookery students make it part of their training to "pay it forward" and provide some tasty baked treats to a good cause. In 2020, they took trays of cakes and biscuits to local supermarket

aast residents took delivery of a specially designed emergency container last week.

The 20-foot shipping container is one of five being prepositioned across the Westland district to assist communities who may be significantly impacted by a large disaster.

Leading shipping container supplier, Royal Wolf, played a key role in the response and rebuild following the Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes.

Royal Wolf branch manager Darren Whelan, said containers were an incredibly strong and solid structure, but were also very adaptable.

Funding for the containers was approved by the Westland District

"It is exciting to see this project come to fruition. When disaster strikes, these containers will provide communities with emergency supplies and alternate communications, and we look forward to the delivery of the other containers to Franz Josef, Fox Glacier, Hari Hari and Otira in the coming months," Westland Mayor Bruce Smith said.

The container has been specifically fitted out with windows, shelving, flooring, and a power source for a generator.

It will house resources to support the community including communications, food and water etc plus anything else the community may want in there.

This year the polytechnic has teamed-up with senior students from Paroa School to put on a really special treat for Dixon House residents during our 'National Share a Story Month'.

The students read stories to the residents, while enjoying a yummy afternoon tea, and

residents could share some of their own memories and stories, polytechnic leader – engagement Mequa Hourston, said.

"We always enjoy getting out in the community and supporting local events, activities and new initiatives; this cookery-led initiative reflects the polytechnic's wider aim to meet the needs of the region and do things that benefit the West Coast."

St John recruits Murchison staff n by Georgia O'Connor-Harding NEW staff promised to boost St John Murchison are expected to be in place any day now.

In March, Murchison was successful in its battle to keep the town's ambulance and paid staff.

St John developed a new plan based on the specific needs of Murchison, including adding two additional ambulance officers as part of a fouryear project to end single crewed ambulances.

The emergency ambulance will operate 12 hours a day from 8am to 8pm. Overnight, it will be crewed by volunteers.

The two new ambulance officers will join the two paid EMTs and nine volunteers. A rural support officer will also be appointed.

Tasman St John district operations manager James McMeekin, said it was working on employing new staff to crew the ambulance in

Murchison, which it intends to have in place by next Tuesday.

As part of the changes, paramedic and former St John Picton station manager Tony Cronin has been appointed as a rural support officer in Murchison for the next six months.

Mr McMeekin said the six month appointment would see him work alongside volunteers and new ambulance officers to build confidence and provide additional resilience as Murchison transitioned into the new delivery model.

"Community involvement in selecting the right person for the RSO role was incredibly important for us and we worked closely with the Murchison Community Council in the interview and selection process to ensure we had the right person for the role."

Mr Cronin has been involved with St John for 21 years. He will start his new role next Tuesday.

Blood supermoon impresses

The rare blood supermoon and lunar eclipse as captured over Stillwater last Wednesday. For the first time in 40 years, the blood supermoon rose over New Zealand, and the West Coast was one of the best spots to get a good view of it, to the excitement of stargazers and amateur photographers. The lunar eclipse started about 9pm and lasted for five hours.

The Amazing Race: Westport-style

ik Tok-ing and digging in slime were two of the activities individuals and groups met as they toured the streets of Westport solving clues and searching for hidden stickers.

Youth Voice Kawatiri organised the event as part of the weeklong celebrations of our country's youth.

The Amazing Race was designed by member of the local Youth Voice with support of Sport Tasman's Dale Ashworth and also Alexa Kliebenstein.

Representative of Youth Voice Kawatiri Keana Anderson, said participants registered at Club Buller and were given an envelope containing clues needing to be solved to be able to locate destinations.

"They had to find stickers at different shops from the map provided and take selfies with them so we knew they had been there," Miss Anderson said.

There were also three activities that had to be completed at three separate locations. "They all had heaps of fun. It was quite a crack up watching the parents! The kids were definitely better at it!" said Mrs Ashworth.

Digging in coloured slime for a coin at the Nuku Gardens behind the Salvation Army store was enjoyed by some and not so much by others according to Nukulab youth worker Mikaere Clarkson.

Eighteen teams registered for the event in whanau (family) or rangatahi (youth) groups.

"About 60 took part," Mrs Ashworth said. It was funded by Ara Taiohi, the national youth organisation, Buller District Council and Sport Tasman with vouchers generously donated by local businesses for the prizes.

Prizes were awarded for various categories including the best dressed, age groups, best sportsmanship and fastest time.

"We were very lucky with the perfect weather," Mrs Ashworth said.

Eye operation for superhero horse

A

fundraising drive is under way to cover the surgery costs for beloved Hokitika therapy horse Cruze to have one eye removed.

The 18-year-old horse, nicknamed 'superhero' due to his mask, joined the West Coast RDA last year.

Two years prior an eye infection left Cruze blind in his right eye.

Handler Bobbie Kincaid said the disability did not disadvantage him.

"He can still see fine out of the other eye. The kids refer to him as a superhero because he wears a mask.

"He's really good with the kids, he's got a nice, slow gait for them to move with. He's been so accepting of all the new things we have introduced him too. He's just awesome."

Ms Kincaid said Cruze took between eight and 10 children a week in sessions.

After the operation he would take some time off to recoup.

"He'll take a couple of weeks off to come right and all his paddock mates will pick up the workload for him."

The procedure was relatively straightforward and common, often taking place while standing up.

However, it needed to be done in Canterbury.

The RDA has been busy running raffles and events, including a movie night tonight at the Regent Theatre to help cover the transport and surgery costs.

A dedicated bank account has also been started for donations: 389014-0077907-00 using Cruze as the reference.

Cruze's journey is also being documented on the RDAs Facebook page.

I

t's a while since the majority of our central government funded projects were approved and I thought it timely to provide an update on how the Buller District Council, Projects in Partnership programmes are progressing.

An important aspect of securing external funding is the ability to deliver the projects as planned. This not only helps the community get the benefit of the funding but it also meets government expectations and builds a track record on which to leverage future investment.

In Karamea the Tidal Creek No 2 bridge is close to practical completion.

This was a $1.8 million investment to replace a poorly aligned and end of life structure and helps ensure heavy vehicle access into Karamea area.

Last week I broke the first ground on the Westport Waterfront Toki Poutangata bridge site. This is an exciting $2.2m project to connect

Westport town centre with the Buller River via a pedestrian and cycling overbridge across the railyard. For many years council has had feedback that residents wanted an opportunity to enjoy the river bank area and begin to "face the river" in a meaningful way.

In Hector a $1m rock seawall is well over half way to completion to prevent a historic dump site from eroding onto the beach.

The Westport Ports packages of work are well underway, the first $4.5m floating pontoon fishing boat facilities will soon be installed and the additional $3.3m package to provide a safe bulk export precinct and improve resilience of other general port infrastructure is now underway.

Community halls and memorials have had a $1m spruce up across the district with these projects now mostly complete. A team of environmental workers have been working away on a $1m project to restore vulnerable coastal land by planting and weed control.

The commercial whitebait farm project was the latest to receive funding and is now progressing through the final governance and planning set up phases.

Water infrastructure make up the remainder of the portfolio with $9.5m of funds spread over five projects, all of which are underway.

To date 126 people have been employed in planning and delivery via our Projects in Partnership programme to date and the investments are providing a significant boost to our economy.

Vector Control Services (VCS) wishes to advise that a ground based possum control operation will be taking place to keep possum numbers under control to prevent spread of bovine tuberculosis.

This operation will be conducted as a part of the TBfree New Zealand programme.

Areas covered: Inangahua Located around Berlins, Walkers and Three Channel Flat and along the Buller River to below the Iron Bridge on the true left, then encompassing both sides of the lower end of the Inangahua Valley and side tributaries through to Larry's Creek.

Where access is required, landowners will be approached for written permission for acceptable control methods on their property.

Operation date: Starting April 12, 2021 extended to July 28, 2021 (approximate).

Poisoning methods, poison used and nature of poison: 1080 poison in the form of pellets Cyanide in green feed paste and Feratox pellets All poison baits will be dyed green.

The public is warned not to enter these areas and not to remove carcasses or baits. Baits are dangerous to people and dogs.
